With this development, pdp would be in disarray now because all they know to do and are banking is rigging at the poll.

Rigging in the next election will be tantamount to a Herculean task when the APC can boast of quality and robust membership round every polling unit in Nigeria unlike in previous election where only PDP have agents across the federation and the opposition only monitoring their strongholds.

With card readers and PVCs, every vote cast can and will matched to a fingerprint of a registered voter in that polling unit, how can multiple ballot take place when the total number of vote in that polling unit has been entered into the database immediately after accreditation in the morning, every vote to be cast is linked to a particular person and all ballot papers matching the fingerprint of everybody in that particular polling unit.

INEC under Jega has tremendously improve the electioneering process and the adoption of Card readers, fingerprint match and PVCs is indeed a giant move forward in the enhancement of credible, fair and open elections.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has stated that the rescheduled general election in the country will be difficult to rig.

Benue State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Professor Istifanus Defwang dropped this hint on Friday, when he paid a visit to the state governor, Mr Gabriel Suswam. He said the commission’s preparedness for the elections and the introduction of computerised card reading machines had less than one per cent failure rate.

The REC noted that officials of the commission would not condone any act of indiscipline from politicians but would follow laid down procedures that would ensure the success of the election.

He, therefore, cautioned politicians to steer clear of corruption, adding that in the four states he had superintendend election, “it is opposition that won.”

According to Defwang, INEC was prepared for the 2015 election, adding that all materials including the card reading machines with in-built device to check fake permanent voter card (PVC), double voting and voting by proxy were on ground to check all manner of electoral frauds.

He further disclosed that Benue State had the highest zero polling unit non-collection of PVCs in the country, noting that out of the 3188 polling units in the state, 659 units were yet to collect PVCs. He stated that with the shift in the dates of the elections the commission was ready to distribute all remainder PVCs.

“INEC has the capacity to conduct a free, fair and credible election with the level of our preparation, the new card reader machine will go a long way in fishing out people who are ready to commit fraud during the election.”

He called on the state government to sensitise the people of the state to the urgency to collect their PVCs before the elections.

Professor Defwang also warned that INEC would not accept collection of cards by proxy even as he advised residents to go to the polling units where they registered to collect their cards.

In his remark, governor Suswam assured the state INEC boss that despite provocation by the opposition All Progresives Congress (APC), which he alleged, shot two of its members in Konshisha and Guma local government areas of the state, government and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) would provide a peaceful atmosphere for non-violence elections.

He called on the state INEC to embark on more enlightenment on new voting system for a better understanding, especially by rural dwellers.

Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo state says the ruling Peoples Democratic Party at the federal level has reduced Nigeria to a laughing stock in the comity of nations with its ineptitude to provide basic amenities and fight insurgency.

Speaking at two mega rallies of the All Progressives Congress in Edo North and Edo Central, the governor said when the PDP took the reins of governance in 1999, the country had 774 Local Government areas, but as we speak, close to thirty of those local government areas are being controlled by insurgents.

According to him, it is time to ask yourselves: “in 16 years of PDP leadership, what has PDP government produced? For 16 years, they gave us darkness. No light, yet they keep bringing bills. They produced unemployment, our companies have all closed down. If the federal government does not have good industrial policy, unemployment will continue to be here. So PDP brought unemployment. PDP government brought kidnapping to our country. There was no single case of kidnapping before 1999, PDP brought kidnapping,” he stated.

“The most worrisome of them all is that in 1999, PDP Government was handed 774 Local Government Areas and as we speak now, Boko Haram controls about 30 Local Government Areas and if they continue to rule, they will get here. We have the best soldiers in the world, they go to other countries for peace keeping. How come they now say our soldiers are now running from common insurgents? For 16 years, they have not equipped our military.

While urging the people to vote en masse for the APC, Oshiomhole said: “I can give you 100 reasons why we must vote Buhari. It is for our own survival. It goes beyond tribal sentiments. PDP has failed Nigeria. They have reduced Nigeria to a joke. They have shared our companies to themselves. They extorted our unemployed graduates all in the name of scam recruitment exercise. You cannot continue to vote for a party that has lost every sense of responsibility and reduced our country to a huge joke even within the African continent.

“This coming election will be a decisive one. We have a presidential candidate that has courage, a presidential candidate that will fight corruption and you will be counting the casualties. He will not be like those who say they are fighting corruption and nobody is falling.

“General Buhari was a Military Governor and later served as Minister of Petroleum before becoming the Military Head of State and despite having held all these positions, he never amassed public funds to himself to become rich. He is the kind of man Nigerians needs. A man that will fight corruption, instill discipline and ensure that the poor are not cheated.”

He said, “Buhari built Kaduna and Warri refineries. How can they say all our refineries are good and yet we are importing products and because we are importing, that is why petrol and kerosene price have refused to reduce. If our refineries are not working, where will those our children studying Electrical, Petroleum, Chemical and Mechanical Engineering work after graduation? If PDP could not do refinery in 16 years, do you want to give them another chance to fail? That is why Nigeria needs General Buhari.”

The Governor who presented the candidates of the APC vying for various elective positions in the state said, “we need the very best and come day, come night, I can vouch that with them, the development of this area will be sustained.

“These are tested men. With these men, we will bring more development to Edo State. They have experience and with the little opportunity they have had to serve, they reproduced eye-mark projects that can be seen by all. I can assure you that with these candidates, we are in very safe hands.”

Taking a swipe at politicians who defect from one political party to the other when they can’t get nominations, said politics should not be about the individual alone and urged the people to not be deceived into experimenting with such inconsistent characters but rather with the party that has been tested and has brought so much development to Edo State

The Pentagon, the United States of America’s military coordinating body, has faulted the claim by President Goodluck Jonathan that Nigeria has applied since early 2014 for assistance to send troops to combat the Boko Haram insurgents.

Rather, Pentagon said over the weekend that discussions on troops to combat the Islamist body was just beginning based on the formation of the Multi National Joint Task Force.

Jonathan had in an interview with the Wall Street Journal said the United States had ignored requests by Nigeria for troops to combat the Boko Haram militants.

He said the country had in early 2014 reached out to the US for assistance, adding: “Are they (America) not fighting ISIS?

“Why can’t they come to Nigeria?

“…they are our friends.

“If Nigeria has a problem, then I expect the US to come and assist us.”

But the Pentagon Press Secretary, Rear Admiral John Kirby, also told the Wall Street Journal that the US was yet to receive an official request for troops from Nigeria.

Kirby said what the US was doing now has been to enter into discussion on how it could participate in the Multi National Joint Task Force with other African nations to assist Nigeria.

Kirby said the task force will be designed to help build up Nigeria’s own counterterrorism capabilities.

He said: “These discussions are really just now starting.

“I can tell you that there are no plans as I speak here… unilaterally to send or to add US troops into Nigeria.”
