What is d benefit of linking sim cards to NIN to d average Nigeria?
What has blocking unregistered sim got to do with crime rate? If after reading what I posted and you can't find at least one advantage of every citizen having their bio in a national database base, then I'm afraid I can't help you. Bye |

obi58: This is the biggest scam of all..... Everywhere now the sermon is about why we need to eliminate subsidies because of the drag on government resources and how a lot of funds are being stolen in the name of subsidy.
Nobody is talking about why after 6 years of the current administration not one of the 4 refineries has been fixed with all the monies pumped into each on a regular.
No one is talking about why the initiative of stopping fuel supplies to stations around the border and tightening our border controls to eliminate smuggling across the borders by tankers has been relegated to the archives. Why was the initiative to tighten border controls stopped? When it was being implemented we were able to identify more accurately our daily fuel consumption as a country and it was far less than the 60million litres being touted.
No one is talking about improving the metering systems at the ports to improve efficiency in measuring the amount of imported fuel being brought into the country so as to improve the accuracy of what is being subsidized.
No one is talking about stripping to the barest minimum the charges, carriage costs and levies imposed by government agencies from customs and others on the imported fuel to reduce as much as possible the landing cost of the imported fuel.
No one is talking about the failure of the deregulation of diesel and kerosine especially of diesel as the high price has had attendant negative impact on our manufacturing industry which is faced with hydra-headed challenges of no electricity, multiple taxation and galloping inflation. In fact it is the increase in diesel prices that has encouraged the growth of the bunkering sector where the locally adulterated diesel is in high demand because it's cheaper.
All we keep hearing is that it's a necessary pain we have to go through just like privatisation of government agencies was touted to us.
Tales by moonlight. Putting an end to subsidy is an easier solution to all those solutions you gave. |

lexy2014: What is d benefit of linking sim cards to NIN to d average Nigeria?
What has blocking unregistered sim got to do with crime rate? Actually, I think the linking of NIN to the sim card isn't just about stopping crimes directly but about making sure that the identites and biometrics of as many Nigerians as possible is being captured and added to a national database. Compulsory linking of NIN to Sim cards is one of the ways to compel Nigerians to have NIN since almost everyone has a phone and sim card. Another way was through making it compulsory for every JAMBITE and WAEC student to provide NIN before they can be enrolled of the exams. Since almost everyone must use some card or write WAEC and JAMB that's a way of making sure everyone has NIN. BVN wasn't enough because not everyone has a bank account. Same with VIN cos not everyone has a vehicle. But NIN emcompasses all. So no matter how some Nigerians decide to complain and be stubborn and refuse to link their NIN to their sim cards, the government will come up with another way to make sure they get NIN. Maybe soon, you'll need NIN to get a get a government job and even some private jobs too. Or you'll need NIN before you can register for any government scholarship programs and loans etc.. A time will come when it will be almost impossible to do anything in Nigeria without NIN and then everyone will have to have a NIN to be, and live as a Nigerian. I remember during that Uwa case, somebody here on Nairaland was insulting the government for not having a database for the fingerprints of the people that raped Uwa even after using a fire extinguisher (which was definitely going to have their fingerprint on it) to bash her head. This same person is condemning the NIN on Nairaland. How stupid can anyone be? Also when the Trump adminisration resticted Nigeria along with some other countries from entering into the US, one of the reason he gave was that, “the established identity-management and information sharing criteria assessed by performance metrics.. wasn't met". Nigerians complained and condemned Nigeria for not having a database. Now these same Nigerians are condemning NIN. How can we be condemning both the problem and the solution to the problem... Las las we will complain, wail and condemn the NIN policy but everyone will still get the NIN. |

obi58: Regardless... The focus should be on stopping importation of refined product and that can only occur when our refineries are made functional. Dangote refinery will be of help in this regard. Though I'm still in support of the government repairing our refinery. We shouldn't be depending on the private refinery of a private individual |

Reference: If you are not willing to pay a fair price for petroleum products then it will remain scarce because no one will invest in it. I always use this example:
If you plant yams for a living, the only benefits your profession will accrue to you is access and availability to yams constantly. Anytime you take one out of the yam barn to eat you incure a cost that MUST BE RECOVERED if not down the line you will run out of yams. Nigeria's oil reserves only gives us access and availability. It does not not give us the latitude to consume it at any cost because it requires production at the least.
The fact that we have been consuming it for decades while not paying a fair price to keep production going is the main reason why three decades ago all the refineries collapsed. It is the reason why only Dangote is venturing albeit with so much difficulty.
I usually ask folks. How do you define water, a social commodity?, an essential commodity?, an industrial commodity?. a commercial commodity..... Afterall it is God given, it is found almost everywhere on earth but there is no one on earth who will not invest in water one way or the other to have and use it, so it is not free and i will be damned if people go round giving free water anywhere from rural villages to urban mega cities.
Nigerians should wake up to the realities of what makes societies work, develop and prosper and learn to build their country in the knowledge that nothing of value comes cheap or free. Exactly the example I wanted to use about water being everywhere but its not free. Cos some Nigerians think that because we naturally have crude oil in the soil then fuel should be free |

Why should we pay through our nose for what we have in our soil,
Especially, the Niger deltans , why should we pay high amount for what is deposited free in our soil,
It's a pity , useless leaders since independence,
When the oil dries up, you people will buy PMS at N5000 per litre,
Useless country Even Saudi Arabia that has crude oil and produces more than times 2 of Nigeria with a population of 4 times less than Nigeria still pay over N300 for their fuel. So because crude oil is in our soil does that mean to refine the oil is free of charge? Won't you build and maintain the refinery? Won't you pay the workers and engineers in the refinery? Why does Nigerians like free things.. |

Instead of removing a slug attached to our skin slowly and elongating our pains, it is better to remove it once and for all and bear the pain for a short will.. The thing is that even before removing the fuel subsidy, fuel had increased from 45 to 87 to 120 to 167 Naira and yet we didn't die. Let them just remove the slug (subsidy) once and for all and let all the inflation happen once and for all. We will still survive. |

Agbegbaorogboye: It's bad. In my humble opinion, a lot of you who defend subsidy must go are not aware it's an idea that comes from Western institutions like IMF. Meanwhile, the US has agric subsidy and even subsidises its oil and gas sector. After the 2008 financial crisis, same US gave various bailouts to its real estate and finance sector big firms. In the case of Nigeria, successive govts watched our refineries fail while paying fraudulent monies to their cronies and friends as fuel subsidy. They did this while it was still convenient for them to run govt as well and never cried out. But immediately the payment began to affect the cost of governance, they broke into a cry and hired propagandists to help them amplify the cry about the evil of subsidy. May I ask if anyone has been punished for the corrupt practices embedded in subsidy till today? No one. But the citizens are expected to bear the cost of govt inefficiency. So the real reason govts have wanted to remove subsidy is to ease the burden of governance not to build capital projects or fund critical sectors of the economy as you their supporters easily trumpet. If a government needs 3trn to do something capital, there are various means of financing it (including taxes) that does not involve removing any subsidy. So it's not a good thing for govt to think it can eat its cake and have it by pushing the cost of its inefficiency on the citizenry. Subsidy is not a bad thing if well managed. Most importantly, getting our refinery working should be a primary responsibility of govt because that's the source of the bloated subsidy. You don't cure an illness by treating the symptoms. You treat the cause. Just wanna add this.. America also 1..Pays for subsides from income tax, not from revenue from crude oil exports as does Nigeria 2..American tax to gdp ratio is 33.0%. Nigeria is 6.1%. IGR in Nigeria is very poor. 3. America does not subsidize fuel for everyone.. fuel subsidy there is for the poor. 4. American fuel prices rise and fall with the market. 5.Even with subsides, US fuel costs 408 naira per liter, and yes it is costly to most Americans. |

Sheik gumi is making treasonable utterances sympthizing with a group that has being proscribed yet the Nigerian DSS has never even invited him for questioning, not just him alot of northerners elites like yerrima shettima, malami have made alot of divisive statements overtime yet nothing has being done to them, while southerners are even afraid to dare such .i bet you even if power is given to the today a southern president can even be as powerful as Garba shehu,he will still live in fear of the north, southern men do not deserve to be called men, they do not deserve to be given puccii by their women, there is no where the where such happens,it happened in south Sudan country broke up,it happened in eastern Europe in the 1990s most of the countries broke up,but here in the south we want to ensure it all because we don't want to die .the next generation will come and continue where we stopped.
Spitsss. Go and look at the statements and preachings of El Zazaky before he was arrested. But people started saying he was picked up cos he is Shiite and Buhari is Suuni.. If Gumi is arrested today, people will still talk. As bad and stupid Gumi is, I don't remember him inciting his followers to commit crimes. If he has, do let me know. You treat the cause. So since the government doesn't have the money to keep on paying subsidies how do they sustain it? I'm sure you yourself will go haywire if you hear the government wants to borrow to pay subsidies. You're comparing the the US to Nigeria. What is the national budget of the US, and how much is she paying for those subsidies? Nigeria has a budget of a little above N13 trillion and she is using a big chuck of N3 trillion (about 23%) on just fuel subsidies alone. Let's not even talk about the electricity subsidies.. The US can afford paying those subsidies you're talking about. You talk about getting the refinery working. Weren't you here when FG proposed $1.5 billion to get PH refinery working. And it would take almost 5 years for the repairs..? So should FG keep paying subsidies for another 5 years until the repair is completed? You said there are other means government can source for N3 trillion which includes taxes.. But but what if the N3 trillion is to be paid every year, will those means still be there? So my dear, subsidy is a very bad thing when the money is not there to begin with.. |
