@reference, you could not be any more succinct in your analysis. Truly, we have needs for private participation in social and economic development. Whereas educating the people is relevant, the act of feeding the poor is not an anathema in it self. As Justice Cardozo once noted " The cry of distress is in itself the summons to relief, danger invites rescue"

Don't think what the 85yr old guy who has no meal to eat is a lecture classroom on political struggle and emancipation.

While its advisable to teach the younger generation, empower them so to speak as against feeding them rice and beans, we must also keep in mind we are referring to private wealth, he could Iboritize his money, buy a house and a jeep for a college girlfriend, the choice is absolutely his. As a threader noted, he is not our government.

I love your courage and posture. I have been there before and you make me want to think in that manner again. However, I sure would not advocate a revolution in the manner with which you held out to justify. I have been in the forefront of" Babangida must go!" as a student and all that. While these approach has it merits, it's the poor that would be sacrificed, admittedly it's always the case, I hope Nigeria does not come to such a past. I respect the fact that you want it that way, we share a common difference in approach.

There are revolutions, howbeit not all are violent. Though fear would hinder the process, a civil war or any kind of political unrest right now would destabilize the country more than anything else. Our current fear might be the only courage we have right now, we must use it systematically. " I no wan die, I wan build house, papa dey for house" The great Fela once said. But, we must mitigate the desire for revolution with pragmatic reasoning. The one reason I don't advocate bloodshed revolution in Nigeria is because I'm not willing to die for the much sought after changes. Maybe when I'm ready to go back to Nigeria, man the streets, take live bullets from Mopo, then I could justifiably bemoan fellow Nigerians for lack of courage and zest for a change.

@Basic007, I think-as I may have argued-you made a valid point. By the way, I wasn't privy to the Alele protest, can you believe that? a woman of such repute.  I totally understand and to a reasonable extent agree with KoboJ's position. It's however, arguing that, the failure of govt should be borne by the people because they had failed to remove the govt. This would further hurt the people whom you ought to be protecting as a social activist.

Though the steps are minimal, we would get there someday. Lets hope it happens in our time. We not suppose to sit and wait to see it happen, but we must move cautiously as our leaders as vicious. A strategic approach is advised.

For instance, let a fellow like KoboJ go to Nigeria and start publishing  articles,tv appearances and all that good stuff against public theft and the failure of even a local govt. See how long it takes before s/he is killed. Sure can't trust the govt for security when u are antagonizing and exposing the failures of the said govt. ONCE AGAIN, CAUTION,CAUTION is it. IT'S NOT COWARDICE, but strategy, the force of logic and not the logic of force.
Politics / Re: Prince Alade Oyediran, Ogbomoso Oil Magnate, Murdered by pete(m): 1:41am On Oct 16, 2011
We may have had issues with Adjectival qualifications or a case of stretching or changing the meaning or a word. SHOULD should not mean MUST. Unless we want to erroneously drag our audience into a faulty conclusion.

That the wealthy should to some extent be socially responsive is not alien to modern/western reasoning. At the least, that was Elizabeth Warren's much talked about position few weeks ago as a candidate for senatorial seat in Massachusetts.

Once again, Nigerians expect-which is morally permissible- but, nobody is forced or even a burden placed on them. Our wealthy fellows actually rub it on the faces of the poor, the have the SLIGHTEST burden placed on them.
Politics / Re: Prince Alade Oyediran, Ogbomoso Oil Magnate, Murdered by pete(m): 1:22am On Oct 16, 2011
Seriously, I could not find anywhere in this conversation where anyone indicated that, private citizens in Nigeria are forced to assist. I'm also are unable to see where and how the BURDEN is placed on them. On the contrary, they helped the least in Africa. Unless you are referring to public expectation as "Force" and "Burden". In Nigeria people look up to private citizens as against government, but would by no means suffice for forcing them or a burden placed in them,
Politics / Re: Prince Alade Oyediran, Ogbomoso Oil Magnate, Murdered by pete(m): 1:00am On Oct 16, 2011
I have carefully followed the various reasoning outlined in this discus, while I would not claim superiority of opinion, I must stress that, KoboJ has a valid point in all his or her argument, except for the fact that, fellow Nigerians erred by providing fro their private means as against taking up arms to fight the government. While this is an option, it does not and should not preclude private participation.

Case in study: I have lived in the west for a while and I have seen 5 kids through GCE, JAMB and two through college, Ife and Unilag. These are kids who had absolutely nothing, I mean nothing. Would it had been safer to let them stay at home? become robbers or die on the street of protest  against a failling government?

While China as noted by another threader is getting ahead without revolution is not an enviable route. Human right abuse still persist in china, the current development MAY not be sustainable over time.

DO WE NEED REVOLUTION IN NIGERIA? YOU CAN BET YOUR LAST DIME?KOBO THAT WE DO,BUT SURE NOT AT THE EXPENSE OF PRIVATE PARTICIPATION ON THE CONTRARY, CONSCIENTIZATION THUS COME FROM PRIVATE PARTICIPATION IN SOCIAL GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT.

Politics / Re: Pastor Tunde Bakare Vows To Mobilise 12m Nigerians To Campaign Against IBB by pete(m): 8:15am On Nov 01, 2010
@ 1stCitizen, I don't think Bakare or people like myself hadn't forgiven IBB according to Bible dictates, we have forgiven him, but just would not let him sin against us again.

We forgave him, but we still want him to respect God and return the loot.

When a man kills your brother, you may forgive him, but sure would not let him come back in your house and kill another brother, NO, NO, NO

Honestly, the crusade is not against only IBB, but any and every politician who had stolen public wealth.
Politics / Re: Pastor Tunde Bakare Vows To Mobilise 12m Nigerians To Campaign Against IBB by pete(m): 7:18am On Nov 01, 2010
@ mammustwac, you are right on the dollar, you can't be any more correct. Nigerian masses have been so pauperized that, they now lack the zeal and courage to fight for their right. Even the few who tried are heavily criticized. It makes me sick to my stomach I must say.
Politics / Re: Pastor Tunde Bakare Vows To Mobilise 12m Nigerians To Campaign Against IBB by pete(m): 7:16am On Nov 01, 2010
You wonder why Nigeria is what it is today, folks are saying pastors should sit down and watch the country languish in absolute poverty, guess Fela sat down and

sang about Roses, Wole Soyinka should always sit in a small cabin office and write about only the "Jewels of his dreams" Gani should have worried about Latin maxims only, please WAKE UP!!!!!!

Imagine if all the pastors and Imams would all stand up and cry against our thieving politicians, If all the singers would all be like Fela for just ONE DAY and see if Nigeria would not be stirred in the right direction,

THE COUNTRY IS IN DIRE NEED OF SOCIAL CRUSADERS!!!!!!!!!
Politics / Re: Mariam Abacha Preaches Forgiveness. Will Nigeria Forgive Her? by pete(m): 10:15pm On Aug 02, 2010
Jakumo,
I want to say you killed. I was in my office and laughing very seriously. My assistant who had just walked in thought I was laughing at her, you know Oyinbo girls, she was almost beginning to cry, thinking I was laughing at her weight or dress. Sadly, I wasn't able to put myself together to explain to her. as I type now, she is walked out of my office,
I know the Abacha insanity is not a laughing matter, its just sad we live in a Nigeria where anything can happen. If OBJ became president, an IBB could happen to us an if things don't change, I mean a revolution, don't be surprise that Abacha's son may want to be president some day. It kills my heart just thinking about it
Properties / Re: A Plot Of Land For Sale @ Ikorodu by pete(m): 5:53am On Jul 28, 2010
@ explicitpro, could you beat that? I wonder why some posters could not post the minimum details, land location, price and at least, the type of title. Why do I have to call you to get these basic info.? Just don't get it.

If you asking for 40M for a half a plot in Ikorodu why do I have to call you or email you to know that?
Properties / Re: Cost Of Foundation For 3 Br Flat by pete(m): 8:53pm On Jul 01, 2010
Here is a sample picture, hope this works, this is 8 apartments. It could pass for a one family mansion. I know this is not common in Naija and its Western and all that, its just a sample an idea of what I mean,

Properties / Re: Cost Of Foundation For 3 Br Flat by pete(m): 8:30pm On Jul 01, 2010
This is been mentioned in this forum before, but I'm tempted to ask again, why is it that, all or the most common rental structure in Nigeria is the four family 2 or 3 bedroom apartments? Usually, two flats upstairs and 2 downstairs?

Has anyone seen designs that looks like a one family residential place-outside-but actually holds 8 families.apartments 3 bedrooms each? This is common in the UK and the USA.

Now, my questions to the pros. in the forum, would getting building plan approval from Alausa be feasible for a project that that? or it really has to be the usuall conventional style?

If yes, what do you think-roughly- would be the cost for the foundation? I mean if the structure sits on a two plot of land. I wise and convincing answer could earn you/your company a contract here, I kid you not
Properties / Re: Cost Of Foundation For 3 Br Flat by pete(m): 8:24pm On Jul 01, 2010
This is very interesting. I have had two projects running concurrently in Nigeria and one just can't get enough

information. One threader who seems to be a professional had opined that, its better to have your design ready

before seeking actual cost, hence you're faced with unwarranted/unplanned cost at the middle of the project. I

think that is very true.
Travel / Re: Frsc Is This True? by pete(m): 2:59am On Jun 29, 2010
Hey Bud, love your courage, wish I could do that now, back in the days with my NBA sticker I use to argue and fight with Police men in the highway. Nowadays, I just fly jeje or pay whatever the ask and go on my way, REASON? I had seen then kill a guy just like that over fire exstinquisher, more so, just not ready. As a young and fresh graduate then, I thought I was Gani and figured I could fight the system from without. Now I do know I could change it from the inside, the Nigerian failed political system, bad roads, failed security systems are just a reflection of our failed political and economic systems. Don't get me wrong, I'll fight just as the poster did, but not in a solitary highway with no witnesses, those Ahole could waste you in no time. But hey, BRAVO for standing your ground
Travel / Re: Lagos - London - Denver - London - Dubai - London - Lagos by pete(m): 2:49am On Jun 29, 2010
@ poster, you're right, its a travel thread and I think posting your pictures and the places you visited are ABSOLUTELY in ORDER. But be rest assured, some will

like the idea- almost screaming your name- and some would definitely hate, Its normal.

Hey, let me warn you, landing and taking off from Denver CO. is hectic. You will experience a serious turbulence to the point you will think the airbus is about to crash.

This usually happen when its windy and the surrounding mountains, so please get ready, sure would not be fun. But hey, best wishes
Culture / Re: Craziest Thing You've Ever Done? by pete(m): 4:03am On Jun 27, 2010
I have had two scenarios. One as a 8yrs old kid, back in PH. My dad had visitors and they had a lot of "Hot Gin" I think it was Gordon's or one of those. So after the visitors left, my dad left the house with the alcoholic drink sitting on the table. I went in there and almost emptied the bottle. I got so drunk, it gets better, I went down the street with friends while drunk. I proceeded into the house of a guy who lived by the side of the road. I had seen him walked into his bedroom. I walked inside the house, went in his bathroom and eat up all his closeup toothpaste. I retrospect, I just wondered if the guy had came out and seen an unknown kid in his bathroom squeezing life out of his toothpaste. Gracefully I walked out and went home to crash for hours

As an adult, few yrs ago I was heading to France Via Logan Airport in Boston Mass. An old African girl friend decided to meet up with me. I had a 4 hour lay over, we chatted and decided to do the old time thing, the closest hotel was hours away and I was like, hey, fck it, go in the mail Bathroom and I'll join you, she did and I joined her there and the rest u could imagine. After we were done, the airport security who had become suspicious of her but lost track, saw the both of us coming out of the restroom. He looked, wondered, but had no evidence as to what may have happened. Thinking about it, that was risky. If I was caught, I would have lost my Government clearance-since I was on a govt. assignment- maybe lost my job and so on. Now that I'm older I think sh@@t through before doing them.
Business / Re: Advice On Relocation To Nigeria From Uk by pete(m): 2:42am On Jun 09, 2010
@poster, I think you may need to stay some more in the UK. as one threader noted, buying a prado jeep sure would not be the right move for one who plans on renting. You should buy and build, if you can, unless the budget is smaller.

Also, I was totally unaware of the drop in rental cost. I invest in real estate in Nigeria and was unaware of that. You must have an insider there, hehehe

Please visit the property session to get a feel of what rent goes for, please.

QUESTIONS FOR THE WHOLE HOUSE

Do you think Esther would return to the beach side hovel?

Would slender? I know he is got the record deal and probably would become a millionaire

Did Esther go on the trip with her husband? If not, after staying in London hotels, do you think she is returning back home to sleep on the floor with him?

Just curious folks, I mean no disrespect
Politics / Re: From The Dump Slums Of Lagos To The Streets Of London by pete(m): 11:55pm On Jun 08, 2010
Q Newdeal, sorry to let you know that, in most cases, that's what eventually happens. Its like Hollywood, someone somewhere would exploit the situation to enrich his or herself. Its sad, but that's human nature.

Wait up until later when Esther or Slender would come out crying foul about certain deals and conditions they were placed in by the handlers.

I had had a situation with a human right organization in the past. When money started coming in, values were lost, ideologies were changed and philosophies were rewritten.

Davidif,
thanks for the help with the clips. These videos are disheartening, but the truth is, they are REAL, those of us who seem to have, lets not fail to do good. ONE SOUL AT A TIME
Politics / Re: From The Dump Slums Of Lagos To The Streets Of London by pete(m): 1:05am On Jun 08, 2010
This is amazing. Besides the guys story, I just was thinking about the situation at the dump. My concern is, what can I do? Maybe when I go naija this December, buy like 100 gloves for the workers there or something,

Please, need some help identifying who Esther or the girl mentioned in the threads. I saw the youtube clips 1 through 6 I may have missed it. Who is she? was she at the dump site too?

If you have any ideas what a private individual could do to ameliorate sufferings at that site, please suggest. Cost should be within a thousand dollars and less. I also thought of clean boots for the slaughter site.
Travel / Re: Going To Nigeria For The First Time? by pete(m): 1:20am On Jun 03, 2010
I had noted before in this forum that, you will get robbed in the Bronx NY before you get robbed in Oshodi or Ikeja. and I kid you not. Nigeria is bad, don't let us lie to ourselves in shame, but, c'mon we're all naijas, shine your eye well well.

Used the precautions outlined and you will be nearly as safe as you could get.

@poster,
I think the house (those who weren't mad at you)adequately addressed the question or the advice sought. From personal experience, please speak Pidgin mostly, go low key, be elusive as best as you could. Most of the crisis visiting Nigerians get are self inflicted. Just be watchful
Career / Re: Average Salary For A Lawyer In A Law Firm In Nigeria by pete(m): 8:33am On May 25, 2010
I feel you folks, the big names pay very little, if you must practice, you would need to persevere, learn the trade and go start your own private practice. This again isn't that easy, you need money to go this route.

By in the days, my law firm paid 3K more than Gani's chamber and my boss then would brag and tell us to go to Gani's if we complain about our pay.

@ the poster would provided numbers for the number of lawyers in Nigeria and the NBA, could you please supply a source? if you have one. I say this because, I think the numbers MIGHT be wrong. I think each year, law school spits more than 10 graduates, more so, now that I heard they have more than one law school.

By then we were like 350 in my class. Faculty of law oau had a total of 2400 students, part one through five. Please folks, I know this isn't what the thread is about, but want to know the rough number of lawyers in Nigeria and how many we have in law schools each year. This could be another reason why the pay is low, the big principals know that, the supply out numbers the demand.

Politics / Re: President’s Wife Off To Dubai by pete(m): 8:20pm On May 20, 2010
@ na so, please check it out a little closer, these folks with access to public funds should not be ignored when they make these trips, trust me, thats where it all starts.

That which you go seek in Dubai, start making it happen in Nigeria. I said start because, it would not happen over night, but at least start. If not, every public figure would keep running overseas for one thing or the other and we would never have these things in Nigeria. Yaradua was going to Hospital in Dubai and Saudi when we have Hospitals in Nigeria, right? they buy homes in the Uk and middle east, why not build these houses in Nigeria? oh, I see, its suppose to be a secret abode, but why? sh***t like this needs to change.

Please, get it right, at the moment, we want to know when the president or anyone associated with public fund coughs, really, we're interested. I'm guessing thats an ambit of the social contract rule.
Politics / Re: President’s Wife Off To Dubai by pete(m): 8:11pm On May 20, 2010
Its a shame that, NL though mostly visited by young nigerians, does very well displays the mentality of the older generation that is killing and continue to kill us as a people

Patience is NOW public interest. We owe it to us as a nation to know when she travels, WHY? because, previous trips by Mayam Bangida, Mariam Abacha,Stella OBJ and Turai did nothing to us, but further put the average Nigerian in penury. How could you ever think we should not be concern?

Whats her business in Dubai? as one poster noted, she has a record, please folks, its unthinkable to say we should not be concern. We're not saying don't go, just let is know when you leave and the business there, pretty easy, right? I would think so.
Jobs/Vacancies / Re: Fcmb Treating Staffs As Slaves by pete(m): 10:45pm On May 17, 2010
Shine my eyes? you can bet your last dime on that, I sure do and will always do. I pity the situation in Nigeria. I plan to ease it in my own little way. Employers are just mean and like I had noted, we would need our govt. to help. Force them to do right by the average citizen.

They must be socially responsible, help with schools, roads and education. Thats what being socially responsible means. Don't tell me they can't. They sure can. Please ask Cecilia and the rest of them.

Its not easy, folks, but we'll get there some day, one step at a time.
