Hi All! I started this thread in 2016, but haven't visited Nairaland for almost 4 years. So, do pardon me for not replying the direct enquiries to me. Perhaps the emails from Nairaland went to Junk. I'm glad to see that people are already taken advantage of this God-given bird food. I started a small Poultry farm in 2018 and that was my saving grace. I hope every livestock farm takes advantage of this natural phenomenon. All the best! |
Hi Mr Babatunde, Pardon me, I'm just seeing this. If you have a heap of dung under tree or any form of shade, use a stick to poke through it after at least one week that the dung has been there. I'm convinced you will see BSF Larva there, unless during extreme harmattan like they have in the north. I'm inclined to believe that they're everywhere in Nigeria in the country sides. So do check around your Poultry where the dung is disposed and let me know. Every farm in the bush in lagos has it in their dung hill, unless they're treating the dung with chemicals that harm the creatures. tundegodson: |
cashtrend:The picture is not clear enough. But it does look like it. |
Have you made further progress in your quest to culture Diaphnia? I'll be glad to learn from you. |
Nice work, Sister! |
Ayoolanairaland:Do you still have the 50g Murano seeds? I'd like to buy. |
Iganke, after Agbowa |
rockyk:I've been seeing the larvae everywhere there's a Poultry or Piggery dung under shade. Just dig 1 or 2 inches into the dung that's more than 2 weeks old under shade. You'll see them plenty!! |
excelAGR42:Thanks for sharing. The net trellis you're using... how is it sold? Or did you construct it yourself? |
If lady bug enter your watermelon farm, you go know say dem no be your friend! If you believe that gospel, you might as well raise dem pests inside your greenhouse. The only creeping and flying things I want to see on my field are earthworms, butterflies, and bees. I don tok my own o! |
FarmTech:Yes, they are, Sir! https://www.nairaland.com/3148746/black-soldier-fly-larva-bsfl |
jephito:Please, where do you get binding wire to buy and how is it sold? Thanks |
Thanks for sharing. How do you prepare your organic fertiliser? |
Pavore9:Thanks, Pavore9, for the tip. Do you know if tutrack is sold in Nigeria? Can you assist with getting it sent from Kenya? |
4000m of irrigation Spray Tubes delivered last Thursday. Thanks Kalu! |
Please what's the difference between the "Treated Giant Hybrids Elephants Plantain Suckers" and the "Dwarf Hybrids Plantain Suckers" ![]() |
BSF larvae is used for waste reduction and thereafter, animal feed. Think of it as maggots in fish feed. It's a very good source of protein. Some people eat it in Australia ![]() billyG: |
Adesegunt, I replied your email |
Please where can I get Murano seeds? Agritropics didn't have when I got there last week. Beboy23: |
Full Payment for order of 4000m spray tube has been done. Kindly confirm, Sir. |
How much do you buy per tonne? |
mfm04622:My friend who owns the farm has suddenly realised how valuable it is to have that on his farm. He has decided to commercialise it. Where's your location? If you're in the South-West, your best bet is to look for a manure pile at a poultry farm or pig farm. If there's vegetation beside the manure pile, or the manure pile is under shade, then use a stick to dig up a layer of manure that has been there for more than a week. You will likely see maggots. If you look around the vegetation, you will likely see the Black Soldier Flies itself. You need to know the difference between the larvae of house fly and BSF. House fly larvae leaps while BSFL crawls. House fly larvae reaches maturity in 4days, BSFL takes at least 2weeks. If you are unable to do as advised, then my friend will be so happy to make money from you. LOL!!! |
Today, I was at my friend’s farm again, and I decided to do as promised- Locate the Black Soldier Fly (BSF) in the neighbourhood of the manure pile where I had seen the larvae I earlier posted. And, YES, I did find them, and I’ve brought pictures to update the thread. @Praktikals FYI

@Hastom911 What's the spacing you used? |
Ibadan as at this week. |
Well, you can't pre-determine the sex. You know the sex when they start flowering. It is recommended to plant up to 3 seeds per hill, and then thin them after they have started flowering. You should have one male plant for every 6 females or so. OP, I need seeds o! |
How do I get the seed? |
You're probably right, @Practikals! I've never heard of latrine fly larva, though we're all familiar with the fly. I know them as maggots and they're bigger than the maggots of the regular house fly.I Google-d for latrine fly larva, and found the Wikipedia entry for it under Chrysomya megacephala. But there was no image of the larva that looks like the one in the first picture I posted. The first picture I posted is the same as the images of mature BSFL you'll find online. When next I see the larva, I shall look around the habitat for the BSF fly itself and update this thread. I must say, there were lots of C. megacephala around the gutters on the farm premises. Thanks for the comment. |
Today, I went on an excursion to a friends poultry and pig farm located along Ikorodu-Ijebu-Ode Road. I found Black Soldier Fly Larva crawling away from the manure dunghill to a dry area to pupate. I got so excited. I was actually planning to import from the US when I'm ready to start working with them. All the documentation I have read about BSF described it in a manner that gave me the impression that this specie of flies have not been migrated to West Africa. (Jason Drew is working and making money from rearing flies in South Africa). Having see BSFL in the bush at Ikorodu, you should have it in your farm anywhere in the South-West to South-South (rain-forest/tropical zones) as well, if you introduce the right conditions to attract them- a suitable substrate with a fly-attracting odour, some shade over the substrate... Now, go check the surrounding of your pig or chicken shit dunghill. If you don't know anything about Black Soldier Fly Larva (BSFL), Google it. Also check for Agriprotein, Enviroflight...

Hi Jovie, It's nice to read your experience. Would you be kind enough to tell us what things you would do differently this year if you were to grow corn again? I will very much appreciate that. Thanks for sharing your experience. |
Seed or leaves or leave powder? What's the price per tonne? |
