Rilamaka: http://www.uhb.nhs.uk/board-of-directors.htm

That's a NURSE led hospital in England, so Mr consultant pediatrician what's your point? Can you name any hospital in Nigeria that can stand shoulder to shoulder with that hospital that has a Nurse as the CMD?

Please stop embarrassing yourself. You are clearly egotistic nothing else.
from your link,
Dame Julie Moore, Chief Executive

Julie is a graduate nurse who worked in clinical practice before moving into management. After a variety of clinical, management and director posts, she was appointed as Chief Executive of University Hospitals Birmingham (UHB) in 2006.

UHB is recognised nationally and internationally for quality of care. It has 1250 beds, £700m turnover, 8000 staff, treats over 800,000 patients annually and has a £545m Private Finance Initiative (PFI) new hospital building which opened on time and on budget in 2010. UHB hosts the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine and with the University of Birmingham, UHB was cofounder of Birmingham Health Partners, a partnership for health research. The National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) Centre for Surgical Reconstruction and Microbiology was opened at the Trust in 2011. UHB operates the Learning Hub, which helps long term unemployed people back into work. In 2012, UHB was awarded a grant from BIS to establish a £24m Institute of Translational Medicine to rapidly develop new health technologies and contribute to economic growth of the region and country.

UHB is recognised for its expertise in clinical IT systems, informatics, PFI projects and education of clinical staff. Because of this UHB is involved in several projects in countries throughout the world, including Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Kuwait, Abu Dhabi, Australia, Libya, Sweden, India and China.

Julie is an Independent Member of the Board of the Office for Strategic Co-ordination of Health Research (OSCHR) and a member of the following bodies: the International Advisory Board of the University of Birmingham Business School, the Court of the University of Birmingham, the Faculty Advisory Board of the University of Warwick Medical School. She is a founder member and past Chair of the Shelford Group, ten leading academic hospitals in England.

In April 2011 she was asked by the Government to be a member of the NHS Future Forum to lead on the proposals for Education and Training reform and in August was asked to lead the follow up report. In September 2013, in recognition of the high quality of clinical care at UHB, Julie was asked by Secretary of State to lead a UHB team for the turnaround of two Trusts in special measures following the Kehoe review.

She has spoken at numerous national and international conferences including appearing on same programme as President Clinton in 2012 and undertaken many interviews on TV, radio and in the press, internationally, nationally and locally.

Julie was made a Dame Commander of the British Empire in the New Year’s Honours 2012. In 2013, she was awarded an Honorary Chair at Warwick University, was included in the BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour list of the 100 most powerful women in the UK and was included in the HSJ lists of the most influential leaders and in 2014 as one of the top ten CEOs. She has Honorary Doctorates from the University of Birmingham and Birmingham City University.

she is a nurse but has extra degrees or training in MANAGEMENT.
she is not the chief executive of that hospital based solely on her nursing degree.
if you want to copy,do it fully. dont copy the part that supports your arguement without looking at the big picture

Sagamite: Considering what I know of most Nigerian doctors, if I ever fall ill while in Nigeria, as long as I can still move, I am effing flying out ASAP.

I no wan die.

And no point going private to be charged an arm and a leg for minimal quality in Nigeria's private sector when I can get super quality for nothing in the UK.

When my parents are ill in Nigeria, I fly them out ASAP, instead of wasting my money on quacks and mediocres in Nigeria.
grin grin grin grin grin grin you never chop finish na to fly your parents out. grin grin

Morotov1: This is Nigerian factor .........and adding failure of an exam up there isn't putting you in good light.
Your curriculum says
6 years of medical school
1 year housemanship
4-6years of residency
others also attend NYSC so it is not exclusive only for doctors, waiting for 6 years before confirmation is African mediocrity. Roughly 13 years.....I must say.
she meant 6mnths to 1year

Morotov1: What exactly are you arguing about ? That when these guys make mistake doctor will get sued?
Are they practising medicine for the doctor to be sued?
When a nurse , pharmacists and the rest commits any form of malpractice or an act of negligence when carrying out their duties.....they are sued based on that and their license most times are revoked.
Check out the instances where they are sued on the WWW.
they might be sued as stand alone practitioners BUT in the public health system, the doctor answers for the rest of them when sh**t hits the fan.

prettyprettywow: Then you people should go and leave us alone with Govt. Nobody is forcing you to stay with the Govt owned hospitals. Haba! Better still, you can migrate to US, UK, or Canda make we hear word
why everything for you na fight?
like say una never realise say which ever way this drama end, doctors no go fit lose.
if the other healthcare workers spoil the public system, everyone including johesu go run go private sector(for those who can afford it)
now guess who is king in the private sector?
all it takes is for the doctors to refuse treatment to patients without lab tests or radiological exams ratified by doctors.
this automatically makes sure that johesu-run outfits can ONLY treat patients with johesu lab&radio exams.
doctors will comfortably create a strata system in private health.

VantagePoint: I have seen this table before, and it actually refers to the salary of GPS, hence the term country doctors or rural doctors.
A orthopedic surgeon for example earns an average of 413, 000 USD per annum.
We all know resident doctors even in Nigeria earn well below some ADNs and DDNs; Nigerian doctors are not being overpaid.
On a salary of 45, 000 USD, that's a take home pay of roughly #500, 000naira. How much is the take home pay of a senior registrar in Nigeria?
barely 250k. in Lagos where tax is crazy it might be lower. in Ibadan its a little higher. less tax

okparaugo: It is a very big shame when all a person can achieve is running after increased pay when he/she could better his own pay via private practice.

It is not uncommon to see multimillionaire doctors and pharmacits who through private practice have dwarfed government pay and bettered their lives...

Every time we be hearing this noise. Smh..
I agree! more and more doctors are moving to private practice in Nigeria. private practice is particularly profitable for specialist doctors.
if you have a well packaged outfit in Lagos, abuja or PH, and you know what you are doing, the sky is your limit.

ArabianPrince: SagaShit....Lol. Yelling moronic person.

I live in the UK and I have been working in Janitor roles most of my career of about 3.5 years.I am contemplating the opportunity of moving back to Nigeria and working in errand running within any industry. My questions are:
1) Is this seen as an important and elite function in Nigeria as it is in UK?
2) What is the Salary range I should be looking at for this function and at what grade should I accept from recruiters?(N.B: I have done this for blue chip firms. Please ; any opinion on this should indicate what industry (if possible, the company) the figures you are quoting are for)
3) Which industries are vacancies likely to be available in?Considering that am not educable or trainable.
4) I am only a drop out No Waec, BSc. No Masters, MBA or Phd but with the reputation of the firms that have recruited me in this janitor positions in the UK, I find lack of these qualifications has been no major hinderance for me in the UK. Would lack of these be an issue in Nigeria?
5) What are the work hours like for janitors/errand staff officials in Nigeria?.

Having fun..... grin

IdomaLikita: It is totally unfair for any "person"(with kind permission from Emperor Sagamite the Great) to come here and Chastise the Drs without even Reading the complete Demands of the NMA. More than 10 valid demands were raised and Relativity of Salary is just ONE of several. The so-called Insurance you mentioned is captioned in the NMA Demands! They clamour for 100% insurance cover for all Nigerians for christ sake, I remember how the NMA single-handedly fought for the NHIS (which covers about 30% of Nigerians now) and got it. Too bad, the same Nigerians who are beneficiaries of this struggle now join to call Drs villains!
NMA calls for a Total Infrastructural Overhaul of Nigerian Hospitals, before going to work, yet Nigerians hate them for asking for this! Nobody knows how sad it is to lose a Patient because of lack of Oxygen in the Tanks or absence of DC-converters or even AMBU bags!

In Nigeria, the Govt is the largest provider of Healthcare to its citizens, thus MUST be held accountable for the decay! We are complaining about the decay in Urban centers, how about our rural centers (where 70% of Nigerians source Healthcare), who is speaking for them? The NMA.

Who amongst the Posters here have gone to St. Nicholas, Premium, etc and received Sub-optimal treatment? Are these not in Nigeria? Are they not listed in the NHIS? Are the Drs and Support staff there Expatriates? Is there any Rancour?

It is sad that JOHESU wishes to dwell more on the issue of pay and title which to me is egocentric! Present additional Qualification and Claim your Pay! Nobody would stop that!
I HAVE ALWAYS HELD A SENIOR MATRON IN AWE because I know she embodies experience which has bailed us out of a lot of situations together!
However, A thousand years of experience as an MBBS holder cannot make you a consultant! You must write gruelling Post-graduate exams and PASS them before holding that title! If NCNM. or the PFN had pursued this goals individually as professional bodies, they might have stood a chance! But lumping up with CHEWS, Records Staff, Cleaners etc simply portrayed their move as a Money-driven one!

Either way, all parties should solve the Impasse ASAP abeg! Politicians are getting fatter from scavenging the corpse of Dying Nigerians!
BULLSEYE!!

Gabygaby: CONSULTANT IN NIGERIA EVEN CHARGE MORE THAN US,HAVE YOU OR UR RELATION BEEN TO ANY NIGERIA HOSPITAL WHERE CONSULTANT IS REQUIRED IN YOUR CASE? a consultant in Garki general hospital Abuja charge us 300,000.00 naira just to handle a bone fracture ,( one leg) this outside hospital bill that took about 200,000 naira again. Majority of Doctor in Nigeria are too greedy .every one of them want to have a private hospital,no one want to serve the nation. under this development, are they not paid well? and even they do not, do they deserve pity hence their poor service and lack of commitment? I personally doubt if they do until they change.

skelewu74: You really cannot separate the case of ONE house officer making error from that of his qualifications affording him the central role in patients management. Mind you, an house officer is under training, and that's expected of him if he makes mistakes. In fact even more glaring errors than that is anticipated. The housemanship period is when you are "supposed" to commit errors and learn from it. We learn on the job everytime. It's only when he's unyielding to suggestions or he displays a wilful ignorance that he can be surmounted. I am very sure that if you had reported him, nothing would have happened.

If anything, that even really emphasises the fact that only those who understand how the shoe hurts should be made the authority. A CMD who knew he had make more terrible mistakes too when he was an house officer would understand and not over react. I want to also remind you that the guys error does not mean he has "nothing" upstairs as you erroneously claimed. It only shows that the field is very broad, and details are too many to learn. That's Medical practice, my brother. If you were in it, you would experience the same.

I would only advise that you are not interested in picking at someone's errors especially out of personal vendettas. You would always see people commit errors, but can't spend all of your time on that, as it doesn't strengthen your own uprightness.
