Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, the outgoing president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is arguably the luckiest politician in the country. He his one Nigerian whose political career has risen to astounding heights in 16 consecutive years. President Goodluck Jonathan From a humble beginning as deputy governor of Bayelsa state in 1999, he then became the governor of Bayelsa from 2005-2007, vice-president of Nigeria from 2007-2010, acting president 2010 and returned to power in 2011. Asides from the March 28 presidential poll, President Jonathan has never lost any election he contested for, critics believe that the president just had luck on his side. Jonathan is one president that has enjoyed goodwill of majority of the people but that did not last long. His attempt on the fuel subsidy one year after cost him mass appeal. At this point things weren’t looking well for him, he then described himself as the most criticised president in the world and adding that Nigerians would know his worth when he leaves office. With less than four day to the handover ceremony, Naij.com takes a look at 5 final memories that Jonathan would be leaving Nigerians with: 1. Questionable Appointments Many Nigerians were surprised with the rash appointments of individuals as this was seen as compensation for their loyalty towards the president. In the last few weeks, the president appointed a new Inspector General of Police, he made his Minister of State for Agriculture the Executive Secretary, Petroleum Equalisation Fund, and appointed a new chairman for the Security and Exchange Commission, (SEC). He also approved the composition and appointment of the chairmen and members of the governing councils for the 12 new universities, the National Institute of Construction Technology and three federal polytechnics. 2. Sacking Spree With barely a month for him to handover to the incoming administration of President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, President Jonathan sacked the Inspector General of Police, the heads of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), and Nigeria Investment Promotion Council (NIPC). 3. Complaining President The president has gone on and on about virtually everything after he lost the elections. From alleging that his aides will be prosecuted, to complaining about been abandoned by his “friends”. Among other issues he has raised since his failed re-election bid. 4. Silence On Fuel Crisis With the current situation of the fuel crisis which has gone on for few weeks now the president has not addressed the nation on the issue. The outgoing president in his usual self has decided to keep mum on the current crisis ravaging the nation. 5. Negative Body Language Towards Transition Committee The outgoing administration has not been cooperating with the transition committee of the incoming administration set up by the President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari. The committee headed by Alhaji Ahmed Joda has also complained severally about the not cooperative attitude of the government committee headed by the Vice president, Namadi Sambo. Meanwhile the President of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor has praised President Jonathan for his achievements in office especially for conceding defeat in the 2015 presidential election |
