Hello, Nairalander/Sport Let Start True Barcelona Fans HISTORY OF FC BARCELONA On November 29, 1899, Hans Gamper founded Futbol Club Barcelona, along with eleven other enthusiasts of 'foot-ball', a game that was still largely unknown in this part of the world. He could never have imagined the magnitude of what that initiative would eventually develop into. Over more than one hundred years of history, FC Barcelona has grown spectacularly in every area and has progressed into something much greater than a mere sports club, turning Barça’s ‘more than a club’ slogan into a reality. Barça has become, for millions of people all around the world, a symbol of their identity, and not just in a sporting sense, but also in terms of society, politics and culture. Throughout the most difficult of times, Barça was the standard that represented Catalonia and the Catalan people's desire for freedom, a symbolism that has continued to be closely linked to the idiosyncrasy of the Club and its members to this day. Within the context of Spain, Barça is seen as an open and democratic club. And all around the world, Barça is identified with caring causes, and most especially children through its sponsorship agreement with Unicef. For a whole century, FC Barcelona has passed through moments of glory and pain, periods of brilliance and other less successful ones, epic victories and humbling defeats. But all these different moments have helped define the personality of a Club that, due to its peculiar nature, is considered unique in the world. With over one hundred years of history, there have naturally been many different periods, both in a social and a sporting sense. In the early years (1899-1922) , from the foundation of the club to the construction of Les Corts stadium, Barça was a club that had to distinguish itself from all the other football teams in Barcelona, to the point that it would come to be identified with the city as a whole. Barça soon became the leading club in Catalonia, and also associated itself with the increasingly growing sense of Catalan national identity. From Les Corts to the Camp Nou (1922-1957), the club went through contrasting periods. Its membership reached 10,000 for the first time, while football developed into a mass phenomenon and turned professional, and these were the years of such legendary figures as Alcántara and Samitier. But due to material difficulties and the political troubles of the Spanish Civil War and post-war period, the club was forced to overcome several adverse circumstances, including the assassination of president Josep Sunyol in 1936, the very person who had propagated the slogan ‘sport and citizenship'. But the club survived, and a period of social and sporting recovery materialised in the form of the Camp Nou, coinciding with the arrival of the hugely influential Ladislau Kubala. From the construction of the Camp Nou to the 75th anniversary (1957-1974) , Barça suffered mediocre results but was consolidated as an entity, with a constantly increasing membership and the slow but steady recovery, in the face of adversity, of its identity. A very clear sensation that was manifested for the first time ever in the words ‘Barça, more than a club’ proclaimed by president Narcís de Carreras. The board presided by Agustí Montal brought a player to Barcelona who would change the history of the club, Johan Cruyff. From the 7th anniversary to the European Cup (1974-1992) the club saw the conversion of football clubs to democracy, the start of Josep Lluís Núñez’s long presidency, the extension of the Camp Nou on occasion of the 1982 World Cup and the Cup Winners Cup triumph in Basle (1979), a major success not just in a sporting sense but also in a social one, with an enormous and exemplary expedition of Barça supporters demonstrating to Europe the unity of the Barcelona and Catalan flags. Cruyff returned, this time as coach, and created what would come to be known as the 'Dream Team' (1990-1994), whose crowning glory was the conquest of the European Cup at Wembley (1992), thanks to Koeman’s famous goal. From Wembley to Paris (1992-2006) was when the club’s most recent developments occurred in between its two greatest achievements, becoming champions of Europe. Josep Lluís Núñez’s long presidency came to and end, and the club displayed its finest potential during the celebrations of the club Centenary. Following on from Joan Gaspart (2000-2003), the June 2003 election brought Joan Laporta into office, and the start of new social expansion, reaching 150,000 members, and more successes on the pitch, including two league titles and the Champions League won in Paris. The grandeur of Futbol Club Barcelona is explained, among many other factors, by its impressive honours list. Very few clubs anywhere in the world have won so many titles. The Intercontinental Cup is the only major football trophy that has never made its way into the club museum, where the club's greatest pride and joy remain the two European Cups won at Wembley (1992) and in Paris (2006). These were Barça's finest hours on the continental stage, but the Club also has the honour of being the only one to have appeared in every single edition of European club competition since the tournaments were first created back in 1955. Barcelona's many achievements in Europe include being considered 'King of the Cup Winners Cup', having won that title a record four times. In addition, FC Barcelona also won three Fairs Cups (the tournament now known as the UEFA Cup) in 1958, 1960 and 1966. In 1971, Barça won that trophy outright in a match played between themselves, as the first ever winners of the competition, and Leeds United, as the last. But Barça not only rules in Europe, but also in Spanish competitions, specifically in the national cup, the Copa del Rey, which they have won 24 times, more than any other club. The Spanish League has traditionally been one of the competitions Barcelona has found the hardest to win, but especially thanks to some wonderful seasons in the 1990s, a decade when six championships were won, and two more championships in the last two years, Fútbol Club Barcelona has now won 18 Spanish League title Barcelona Football Trophies http://www.fcbarcelona.com/web/english/futbol/palmares/palmares.html 2008/2009 Barcelona Squad http://www.fcbarcelona.com/web/english/futbol/temporada_08-09/plantilla/plantilla.html Visit: www.fcbarcelona.com for more information PHEMOUR ![]()

Jama’atu Nasril Islam Denies Fatwa on Man with 86 wives Written by Ibraheem Musa, Kaduna, on 26-08-2008 00:00 Views 36 Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI) has denied issuing a death fatwa on Malam Muhammad Bello Masaba Bida for marrying 86 wives but that it only condemned his act and advised him to repent. The Islamic group said it has no legal authority to pass such a death sentence. The clarification which was contained in a press release issued yesterday, said JNI only informed Malam Bello Bida of "what could have happened to him under a strict Islamic injunction for anybody who deliberately misinterprets the Holy Qur’an and Hadith and refuses to repent." The statement noted that as an organisation which preaches Islam through peaceful coexistence and dialogue, JNI "will not resort to such hasty decision as was widely and wrongly speculated." The Islamic group said that it merely responded to the challenge which Malam Bello Bida threw to Muslim scholars to "show him relevant portions of the Qur’an that limit marrying only four wives and also the type of punishment that will be meted outfor such act. Signed by Sheikh Usman Babantune and Alhaji Abdulkarim Mu’azu, the statement said that JNI wishes to clear the wrong impression which has been "circulated by a section of the the media that it has passed judgement and sentenced Malam Bello Bida for marrying more than four wives. However, in an earlier press release issued on August 18, the Fatwa committee of JNI had decreed that "any muslim that marries more than four wives either by mistake or out of ignorance, is instructed to choose but only four and seek Allah’s forgiveness." In addition, a Muslim who marries more than four wives in contradiction to the instructions of the Prophet (SAW), is not a Muslim, the fatwa noted. It further asked the erring person to repent within three days and if not, he "shall be sentenced to death according to the shari’ah" Also, Shiekh Ahmad Muhammad Sanusi Gumbi, a Kaduna-based cleric said yesterday the JNI had no right to pass a death sentence on Malam Mohammed Abubakar Masaba Bida for marrying 86 wives because only the authorities can do so. Sheikh Sanusi Gumbi was reacting to the alleged Fatwa which was issued by JNI’s committee of ulamas which gave Malam Mohammed Masaba Bida the option of either divorcing 82 of his wives and remain with the Islamically prescribed four, or face a death penalty. According to Sanusi Gumbi, only a governor or the president can execute such a sentence and not even a court can do so. The court, he pointed out, "can only give judgement but it can not execute the sentence.’’ For this reason, it is wrong for JNI to have issued the Fatwa, he added, although he claimed that he has not heard the directive himself. The Islamic cleric further said that spilling a Muslim’s blood is permissible in only three instances; "if he commits adultery and it has been proven that he did it, if he kills another Muslim, or if he goes out of the religion." He said that JNI has a standing committee of ulamas that is responsible for looking into such intricate matters should they arise and issue a Fatwa if necessary. Sheikh Sanusi Gumbi said that he doubts if the entire members of the committee had sat down before the verdict was handed down on Malam Mohammed Bida. "If all the committee members had sat down, may be this kind of answer wouldn’t have arisen,"he added. Malam Mohammed Bida can not be accused of adultery, he also said, because he has exceeded the Islamic limit of four wives. "A Muslim can’t be accused of adultery if there is some ambiguity; since there are some sects around the world that believe in this interpretation of the Qur’an, he can’t be accused of adultery, the Sheikh said. However, Sheikh Sanusi Gumbi said that what Malam Mohammed Bida has done is haram, which is a sin in Islam. He further said that deeds that are considered as haram are "not necessarily offences that necessitate the spilling of a Muslim’s blood." According to him, Islam prescribes the marrying of up to four wives "because of peaceful co-existence within the ummah (Islamic community) and justice." He wondered how Malam Mohammed Bida "can satisfy 86 women in accordance with sharia." www.dailytrust.com Ma'assalam PHEMOUR |

Man kills in-law, six others in Yobe Written by Hamza Idris, Damaturu, on 27-08-2008 00:00 A middle aged man in Jakusko Local Government Area of Yobe State on Monday killed his father in-law, two members of his immediate family and four other people. Sources said the man (names withheld) went on rampage at the Jakusko Local Government Secretariat, about 200km away from Damaturu, the state capital and matcheted all the seven people. Three died on the spot while the rest gave up in hospital while receiving treatment. The man, who was in the payroll of the local government, is said to be mentally derailed and was aggrieved recently because he has not been allowed to collect his salaries in the past few months. Workers in both the state and local government areas are undergoing screening with a view to identifying ghost workers and those with questionable credentials. Yobe State police commissioner, Moses Anegbode, who spoke to newsmen yesterday in Damaturu, confirmed that three people died on the spot, adding that the suspect had been arrested and would be brought to the state police headquarters. Sources said the suspect took a machete to the secretariat and met his unsuspecting victims separately and inflicted various degrees of injuries on them. "I cannot confirm whether the people that died have a hand in his inability to collect his salaries or not", one of the sources said. Police Commissioner Anegbode said it took the efforts of so many people to restrain the assailant. "The suspect equally got injured when people descended on him to stop him from his nefarious act", he said. He said everything was under control and that the police had commenced investigation into the matter. He called on the people not to take law into their own hands. "Every person is responsible for his own act", the commissioner said. http://www.dailytrust.com/content/view/16877/243/ Phemour |
