Speaker of the Ekiti State House of Assembly, Hon Dele Olugbemi has described as "Comedy of the festive season" claim by some of the All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmakers in the State that they sat today, in Ado-Ekiti.

Olugbemi, who said no sitting of the State House of Assembly took place today, added that "The APC lawmakers could have met at a beer parlour in Ikoyi, Lagos or Osogbo, in Osun State."

The Speaker said it was only a group of clownish clowns that would gather at a hotel, consume several bottles of beer and later send pictures of purported sitting as members of Ekiti State House of Assembly to the press.

While urging Ekiti people to ignore the APC lawmakers, Olugbemi said; "They are in court, challenging the removal of Adewale Omirin as the Speaker and it is commonsensical that they allow the court to adjudicate."

He said if the APC lawmakers were serious about performing their legislative duties, they should return to the State instead of running from one hotel to another in Lagos and Osun States.

"The APC lawmakers are behaving like the clowns that they are and one cannot but pity them.

"The hallowed chamber of the Ekiti State House of Assembly is the only venue for the sitting of the State House of Assembly and those meeting in hotels and paraga joints in Lagos and Osun States should know that they are just advertising their collective idiocy," Olugbemi said.

In the real sense of the word "some" forms of stealing can qualify as corruption. Some cant.

E.g. A public officer diverting public funds to private accounts qualify as both stealing and corruption

A public officer using his office to ease the process of getting his relative employed qualifies as corruption but that's not necessarily stealing

But an armed robber waiting for vehicles with guns and robbing people is pure stealing but that is not corruption.

The essence of the word corrupt or corruption assumes some level of responsibility and dignity that is being tarnished or adulterated due to some malpractices. Nobody looks up to a thief with some dignity or expect them to operate on a higher moral pedestal that is why it is out of place to describe a thief with the word corrupt.

Hence those who try to distinguish between the word stealing and corruption are not in anyway trivialising corruption. If anything they are emphasizing the enormity of what is going on in public offices in Nigeria when they try to draw a distinction between stealing and corruption. They are arguing that the seriousness of siphoning public funds into private accounts gets downplayed with the word corruption when in truth what is happening is outright stealing.

In 2006 Nuhu Ribadu made a similar argument about Sani Yerima of Zamfara State while accusing Governors of Corruption. In the case of Zamfara he emphasized that what is going on there is outright stealing without the involvement of any 3rd parties because in his words Sani Yerima was simply diverting State funds directly from State Accounts to private accounts. He is not even disguising it by setting up contactors with fronts like you currently have in Lagos where Tinubu's proxy companies do all sorts of work for the Lagos State Government and inflating cost without being subject to competition.

So eventhough in terms of technicalities of English language "Stealing is not corruption" may be wrong. I understand the sentiments behind the argument. There is some truth in it.
What goes on in public offices in Nigeria is stealing but in most developed countries you have corruption in public offices!

I'm in no way against fighting corruption in this country.... If it can be achieved, it will cause tremendous growth for our country..

My point is this.... Gone are the military area where a dictator decrees and single handedly punishes those deemed corrupt...

GMB should let us know how he intends to end corruption intelligently whilst abiding to the dictates of the constitution not by propagandists telling us how he imprisoned people during military rule.

I think I warned the APC when they were they were throwing theirs that they were teaching the PDP bad lessons, now the chickens are home, so why complain now. The best days of the APC are coming to an end. Power begets responsibility so get ready for more. I personally wish the PDP gets more aggressive. They have been docile for far too long to They detriment of democracy in general. Afterall democracy is a contest.

It is amusing that most people think that one man will just come and fix this country with some magic touch. Our problems have accumulated and it's going to take years and a lot of hard work to solve them. These problems have been caused partly by the leaders and to a large extent by the citizens themselves. We want someone who will come and fight corruption when we are not ready to leave our corrupt ways behind and embrace honesty. Everyone claims to have the fear of God but corruption is rife.
Nigeria will only be fixed when the citizens are ready to cooperate with the government. We all must change our values to promote right over wrong.

Until we realize that nation building is not the work of the president alone, we will keep waiting for the 'messiah' and I tell you, it's going to be a very long wait.
