Politics › FG To Try Nyako On Treasonable Felony – Tinubu. by PhockPhockMan(op): 2:08pm On Jul 19, 2014
Former Lagos State governor Asiwaju Bola Tinubu yesterday said the federal government is planning to try former governor of Adamawa State Murtala Nyako, after forcefully removing him, on a treasonable felony that might see Nyako being imprisoned for life. The Presidency and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), he said, were behind the impeachment of Nyako. In a statement made available to journalists in Lagos, the national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) said President Goodluck Jonathan’s ambition of gluing himself to power could destroy the nation’s democracy. Tinubu said the government harassed the governor through the media, noting: “This kangaroo impeachment is government’s way of punishing Nyako. The plan is to use the content of the letter he wrote to the northern governors as a basis to try him for treasonable felony and eventually sentence him to life imprisonment.“Nyako’s frank, if rough-edged, letters concerning the security situation apparently infuriated the monarch of Aso Villa who has become so arrogant as to believe no opposition against him is justified; thus he has the liberty to impose his brand of injustice to crush those who oppose him. Before our eyes and under Jonathan’s watch, Nigeria is gradually descending to fascism. We must all act now before it consumes us all,” he said.He pointed out that Nyako’s impeachment is an aberration of Nigeria’s constitution and a setback to the nation’s democracy: “Under the constitution, a governor can only be impeached for ‘gross misconduct’. For the PDP, Nyako’s crime was not the false allegations contained in the articles of impeachment.“Perhaps, Governor Nyako’s greatest sin is his temerity to speak truth to power albeit in a courageous way. On two different occasions, he gave an unvarnished insight into the Boko Haram menaceand the insecurity engulfing northern Nigeria.“At the Institute of Peace in Washington, DC, this year, when he visited with other northern governors, he placed the blame for the Boko Haran insurgency on the Jonathan presidency.“He then followed this up with a detailed letter to the forum of the Northern governors in which he accused the Jonathan-led government of genocide against the north. This rattled and unsettled the government.“In impeaching Governor Nyako, the PDP used the constitution to abuse the constitution and the democracy it is supposed to enshrine. Governor Nyako’s impeachment must be seen completely as a political move to punish him and deter others from leaving the PDP.”He argued that, if there were really cases of misconduct, the House of Assembly wouldn’t have waited till he left the PDP.“Upon leaving the PDP, his actions suddenly became the meat for impeachment. There is only one thing new which was not then present. The governor’s political party affiliation changed. In the PDP’s mind, his party change transmitted him from the list of those to be praised to the list of those to be persecuted.“He and the PDP contrived the removal of Governor Nyako from office. This is a temporary and costlyvictory for it reveals more and more the undemocratic heart of the man who rules over the nation.“He now justifies his illegal and immoral acts by claiming that any show of dissent or opposition to him is the product of partisanship and thus not to be seriously considered.“This is what all dictators tell themselves and he has become one. As such, he believes he can turn his back on the will and welfare of the people in order to attain his personal ambitions. Yet, while he may ignore the people, even he cannot make them disappear nor can he keep them for seeing him for what he is.“If he truly believes the false acclaim of his coterie and party dregs are genuine, let him stop these contrived attacks against opposition politicians. If he believes so much in himself, let the people decide things at the polls.”He added that impeaching duly elected opposition politicians will not increase the president’s and the ruling party’s popularity.Attempts to get reactions from Dr. Reuben Abati, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity were not possible as both a text message and email sent to him went unanswered. Calls and texts sent to both Olisa Metu, National Publicity secretary of the PDP and Dr Doyin Okupe, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Affairs were also not responded to.

Residents of Osun State are getting more apprehensive over the planned deployment of heavy security personnelto the state for August 9 governorship election. Investigation conducted by our correspondent revealed that following the planned deployment of heavy security personnel, some of the residents may have resorted to arming themselves with traditional substances believed to be mystical power (charms) in preparation of the governorship election. It was further revealed that though, some of the politicians in the state are without this traditional means of defence, it was gathered that the manner with which the substances is being circulated among politicians in the state now assumed alarming rate. When inquiries were made on why charms and other self defence means was being resorted to, they retorted that it is for self-defence and protection against any harassment and intimidation from conventional security personnel. The planned deployment of heavy security personnel for the election has continued to generate controversies among political parties especially the AllProgressives Congress (APC) and Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP).The PDP is boasting round the rallies in the state that they will use security personnel to claim the state from the APC as it was done in Ekiti State, explaining that the heavy presence of security personnel will ensure that there is no breakdown of law and order and election will go as expected. But the APC has condemned the deployment of heavy security personnel to Ekiti State on June 21 and the planned deployment to Osun State, saying that it was a ploy to militarilise electoral process in the country. It said using military in electoral process is against the constitution of the country adding that it amount to misuse of power on the part of President whose power for deployment resides on.Alhaji Waheed Lawal, a human right activist based in Osun said that the involvement of the military in the electoral process has removed the free will and choice of the people to cast their vote for candidate of their choice. He said that the deployment of military was aimed to harass and intimidate the people who he said must have the free will and choice to elect their leaders. He declared that the major assignment of the military is to defend the territorial entity of the country against external threats and foreign incursion. Lawal maintained that police, civil defence andother security operatives are enough to maintain law and order in an election period adding that soldiers are not needed for internal issues except for extreme cases such as insurgency.According to him, “deployment of soldiers for electoral process is another form of harassing the people. The moment you bring in soldiers there is no longer free choice for people to select.

The wind of impeachment blowing in the political space gathered some momentum Thursday when the Nasarawa State House of Assembly decided that the impeachment notice on Governor Umaru Tanko Al-Makura, be served through the media, since he had been elusive to be personally served the notice. The governor had been accused of 16 offences summed up as “gross misconduct”. The various attempts by the House of assembly to serve him the notice in person since Monday, when the impeachment proceedings began, have been futile.Al-Makura was reported to have rushed to the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Wednesday to plead with President Goodluck Jonathan to intervene so that the impeachment noose could be staved off, but the public service of the notice yesterday indicated that his plea caught no ice with the presidency.THISDAY gathered that the resolve of the House of Assembly to publicly serve the governor the impeachment notice is to avoid the Murtala Nyako experience who had fled Adamawa State in order to frustrate the impeachment process, which demands that he be served personally with the impeachment notice.Section 188 of the 1999 constitution as amended stipulates that “the Speaker of the House of Assembly shall, within seven days of the receipt of the notice cause a copy of the notice to be served on the holder of the office and on each member of the House of Assembly, and shall also cause any statement made in reply to the allegations by the holder of the office to be served on each member of the House of Assembly.”In order to avoid the Nyako scenario, the Speaker of the Nasarawa House of Assembly, Alhaji Musa Mohammed, directed the Clerk of theHouse, Mr. Ego Abashe, to serve the governor through a substituted means should he remain unreachable in person.“In the event that His Excellency, Governor Tanko Al-Makura, cannot be reached for service, the clerk is directed to serve him with the impeachment notice through the media,” he said.To dissuade the lawmakers from going ahead with the impeachment plot, thousands of youths had trooped to the streets of Lafia, the state capital, and to the state house of assembly to protest the attempt to oust the governor. But that did not stop 20 out of the 24 lawmakers in the House from endorsing the impeachment notice which was also published in the newspapers. If the impeachment succeeds, Al-Makura will be the second governor to be so impeached this year and the seventh governor to be impeached under the current democratic dispensation. Al-Makura was the only elected governor under the defunct Congress for Political Change (CPC), but became a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) when CPC merged with the other opposition parties to form the APC.While the 20 members of the House determined to impeach the governor are members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the remaining four who did not endorse the impeachment paper are the only APC lawmakers in the House. Insult upon insult, Okorocha who dumped ANPP he was once a presidential aspirant to come beg Peter Obi and Chief Umeh to prevail on Martins Agbaso, the leader of APGA in Imo State to allow him to contest under the party. It was during the negotiations that it was agreed that Martins Agbaso's younger brother Jude Agbaso will be his running mate. During the election, the combined forces of, natural APGA supporters, Agbaso supporters, protest votes from Catholic Church because of beating of a Rev Father by former governor, Ohakim, Ojukwu supporters and Okorocha’s supporters help in no small ways to push the formidable PDP structure out of government. Immediately he assumed office, he started making enemies with those who helped him into office including framing up and impeachment of his deputy with one bottle of wine and secret signing of freedom of abortion law to spit on Catholic Church and other churches etc. The question now is, WHY APGA, why didn't he revive ACN, CPC, ANPP, ACCORD, LABOUR PARTY etc. Whenever I look at Okorocha, I see a traitor all Igbos should dine with very long spoon.
Politics › ROCHAS Revived APGA In Imo State –aide by PhockPhockMan(op): 3:46pm On Jul 18, 2014
Special Assistant and liaison officer to Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State, Alfred Ononugbo, has said that contrary to speculations, the governor was the one who revived the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in Imo State.Ononugbo said before Okorocha’s emergence as governor, the state chapter of APGA was almost non-existent, but it came back to life through the governor’s efforts. He said that Okorocha’s decision to join the All Progressives Congress (APC) was because he shared common policies and ideologies with the party and it was in the interest of the South East. He said his change of political camp would not prevent him from seeking re-election in 2015 ifhe chose to.“Before Okorocha emerged as governor, APGA was almost non-existent in Imo. It was through his efforts, that the fortunes of the party were turned around, and even if he goes to any other party, he would still win. People voted for him and not for the party. Some people have described his movement to the APC as being unstable, but the truth is that he can only be among people who share the same views and policies with him and those are the things the APC is offering.“He has the desire to replicate what he is doing across the country and if the opportunity presents itself, he would take it. The people of Imo love him and he has not lost favour with them, contrary to what his opponents want people to believe.“If he wants to contest for another term, he has the right to do so and the people of Imo State would vote for him. What his opponents do not know is that many Imo natives are clamouring for him to contest,” he said.

He said GEJ and the PDP Governors are considering going to Chibok, or inviting their parents for a meeting in Aso Rock to score a political point. You should have proved to us that what the guy said is a pure lie, or ain't correct, rather than spewing this above balderdash!

Anyways, I do not expect anything meaningful from the Jonathanians, rather than saying “supporters of APC”, “GEJ Till 2019”, “Cry me a river”, et al.
You see reason why every right thinking people deserting APC, like two headed snake, you can't predict their destination at any point. What is wrong with the governors' advice for the President to wait till some damages by APC is controlled to manageable. We know that the desperation of APC to see Jonathan travel to Chibok is to see if the possibility of "IRONSI" treatment on him. APC knows that they don’t have enough popularity, goodwill, finance, good presidential material, national spread to defeat PDP hence their desperation to dis-stabilise them with lies, propaganda, insecurity, defections etc. Unfortunately for them, the master of the game, PDP has risen to the occasion again, Ekiti and Adamawa is evidence to prove, with more coming. So when I said, cry me a river, I expected those in crying mood because of after effects of HURRICANE JONATHAN to attack me. They did.

While Nyako was impeached, the latter resigned but now says that he was coerced into doing so. During a solidarity visit on Thursday by the state leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the Acting Speaker, Kwamoti Laori, the lawmakers said they were ready to face any litigation. The Acting Speaker told Chief Joel Madaki-led delegation that the impeachment was to salvage the state from misrule and alleged gross misconduct by Nyako. Laori said the mandate given by the electorate was rewarded with massive looting and large-scale fraud of the sacked administration. He, however, assured the party leadership of support and readiness to win the forthcoming election.Earlier, the state PDP Chairman, Chief Madaki commended the resilience of the lawmakers despite the alleged intimidation by the past executive. He promised the Assembly total support of its activities, while urging it to continue to work in collaboration with the executive to ensure that the aspirations of the people are fulfilled. Meanwhile, acting Governor of Adamawa State, Alhaji Ahmadu Fintiri, yesterday dissolved the State Executive Council and all other political appointments of the former governor.A press statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Professor Abdullahi Tukur, directed the former cabinet members to hand over all government property in their possession to their respective permanent secretaries, who will takefull charge of their ministries. The Acting Governor also scrapped the Special Projects and Programmes Unit (SPPU) created under Nyako and headed by his son.The Director of Press and Public Affairs to the Acting Governor, Mr. Solomon Kumangar, who made this known yesterday in a statement, said the directive followed the fallout of the executive briefing from Ministries, Department and Agencies (MDAs).

President Goodluck Jonathan has been advised to tarry a little, before attempting to declare his second term ambition. Governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, stated this at a meeting they had with the President at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday night.Though the governors were in support of the President’s bid for re-election, they said the nation’s mood was not ripefor such a declaration.Investigations by our correspondent in Abuja on Tuesday and Wednesday showed that the meeting considered theplight of the abducted Chibok Schoolgirls and security challenges facing the country. It was learnt that based on these two major issues, the governors asked the President to study the mood of the nation more before considering an open declaration for re-election. Two of the governors, who were at the meeting and spoke with our correspondent separately, said that the President was advised to either visit Chibok or in the alternative, allow the parents of the kidnapped schoolgirls visit him at the Presidential Villa. One of them said, “The meeting was a painstaking one. We considered so many things. We talked about so many issues. While it was true we spoke about how to reposition the party and the gains we are making across the country ahead of the 2015 general elections, wealso considered the probability of when the President could make his open declaration.“Some of my colleagues argued that the time was ripe, but others felt that the mood of the country and even the international community are not favourable.“We argued that if the President declares now, it will be seen as being politically bad and not in the best interest of the nation and that it could be termed as being against the spirit of fatherhood.”He said based on this, the President was“advised to meet with the parents of the girls, even if some are going to see it as coming a bit late. It is better done now instead of allowing it go into history that the President did not visit or invite them for a meeting.”Apart from this, another governor said that the meeting also noticed that the Independent National Electoral Commission had yet to release the guidelines for the election.“We know that the campaigns are for him and part of efforts to strengthen the image of the government and that of the President. The position does not have this opportunity,” he added.
