Politics / Re: Fayose Bans Cattle Grazing In Ekiti, Says; “cattle Farmers Must Own Ranch by Physicist(m): 2:09pm On May 24, 2016
The North (North West, North Central, and North East) have 80% of the total land mass in Nigeria while the South (South West, South East and South South) have 20% of the total land mass in Nigeria. Can’t these Fulani herdsmen limit their cattle to the Northern 80% landmass? The South landmass is 190,000 square kilometers, while the North landmass is approximately 770,000 square kilometers. One of the criteria for sharing federal allocation is landmass. Can’t their state governments develop ranches for them? What are the Fulani herdsmen looking for in the South? Ekiti state has less than 1% of Nigeria landmass.

Celebrities / Re: Why Is It That Yoruba Celeb Hardly Stay In Marriage Tiwasavage by Physicist(m): 6:51am On May 02, 2016
From my experience while growing up, Yoruba men and women cheat a lot in marriage when compared with Ibos. This might be a factor in high divorce rates among the Yorubas. I grew up among Ibos and Yorubas. Ibo men and women tend to reduce or stop having affairs once they get married.

Politics / Re: Hausa Man Must Be Emir by Physicist(m): 7:21pm On May 01, 2016
I am a Yoruba man. I really find these discussions interesting. What I can deduce from these are:

Fulani are good at treachery in addition to being good in fighting wars.

Yorubas in general were never completely united in the past, in the present and possibly would never be united in the future. I grew up in Ondo State. As recently as early 1980s, we usually referred to the people in present Oyo state and some parts of Osun state as Yorubas. The others we just referred to as Ekitis, Ijebus, Egbas, Ijeshas, Akokos, Ikales etc.

If Europeans had not come into contact with the Yorubas, the Fulani might have used the same treachery they used in Ilorin to capture other Yoruba towns. On the other hand the Yorubas might have regrouped and captured Ilorin back. In case you doubt this, why did the then Alaafin of Oyo abandon his old capital? It might be tactical retreat to regroup or fear of the Fulanis.

I also believe Yoruba warriors then were very ferocious. For example it seems without the connivance of some Ilorin Yorubas, the Fulanis would never have taken Ilorin. The way the Fulanis dominated the Hausas or some part of the North was only possible in Ilorin.

I think Fulani in general have leadership skills and think into the future not just the present. Every civilian head of the country from the north (Tafawa , Shagari, Yaradua and Buhari) is Fulani or have at least 1 Fulani parent. I do not think this is a coincidence considering the fact that Fulanis are probably not up to 20% of the Northern population.

From my observations, the Fulani are bullies and very cunny who understand how to jostle for and keep power through diplomacy, treacheries and violence. I believe the Fulanis will submit to superior violence. Why are Fulani herdmens not in Sambissa forest? I personally believe the grazing reserves being proposed in the country is part of their calculated plan to jostle for power and domination of the entire country.

I personally think some of Lawani arguments are based on emotions and hearsays and not facts. I understand he is very angry that a Fulani or Hausa is emir of Ilorin. But some of his arguments have no basics. For example saying Kwankwaso is a Yoruba. Even if Kwankwaso DNA is Yoruba, Kwankwaso does not identify as Yoruba. Why force him to be Yoruba? I can see this pattern in many of Lawani arguments though he seems to know Ilorin history very well and is ready to say the truth about Ilorin history and to twist Ilorin history to suits his purpose as he deems fit.

It is now eight years since you left government why were you removed?

(laughter) I have certain principles below which I don’t operate. Some people see me as too tough to deal with. Those who are close enough to me know I am a very soft person. All I need is to understand you, but having understood you and I make up my mind, if it is a matter of principle, I don’t compromise. Look there was no point removing civilians, going over the air saying they were thieves, they give contracts or containers to their wives., contracts of a million were turned into N3 billion, or N35 million and then you come and do the same thing just because you are carrying a gun. That is armed robbery. If you do that you are an armed robber. You have stolen public property, because you are carrying a gun. Like with my colleagues, I thought they had shared all this philosophy with me including the fifth columnist and until they removed me, I was not entirely convinced that they had not. I was removed because certain members of my cabinet felt because they were in public office they were entitled to things other than what is specified in their terms and conditions of service. They know, me that I don’t compromise my personal or professional integrity. I tell them that at meetings. If they think I have done other things let them bring the facts now, I am free I can talk and they can talk. I think we are both in a position to do it.

Buruji Kashamu confirmed indicted in America for drug deal by Fox News and Associated Press

http://www.foxnews.com/world/2015/04/16/man-indicted-in-america-for-drug-deal-elected-senator-in-nigeria/?intcmp=latestnews

LAGOS, Nigeria – A man indicted in America for allegedly smuggling heroin in a court case that was the basis for the TV hit "The New Orange is Black" has been elected a senator in Nigeria.

Buruji Kashamu was little known before he returned home in 2003 from Britain -- despite a U.S. extradition order -- to become a major financier of President Goodluck Jonathan's party.

Election results posted late Wednesday identify Kashamu as a senator-elect in southwest Ogun state. Opponents are challenging his victory in court, saying ballots were rigged.

Kashamu, 56, hung up the phone twice when the AP called for comment on Thursday. Kashamu has said the 1998 indictment by a grand jury in the Northern District of Illinois for conspiracy to import and distribute heroin in the United States is a case of mistaken identity, He has said Chicago prosecutors really want the dead brother he closely resembles. A British court refused a U.S. extradition request in 2003, ruling there was uncertainty about Kashamu's identity.

A dozen people were long ago tried and jailed in the case, including American Piper Kerman, whose memoir about her jail time became the Netflix hit "Orange Is The New Black."

A Nigerian federal court last year ordered Kashamu's extradition, an order upheld by an appeals court. But Nigeria's government has not extradited him.

That failure to act caused Olusegun Obasanjo, a former president, to warn that "drug barons ... will buy candidates, parties and eventually buy power or be in power themselves."

Jonathan's perceived protection of Kashamu was a factor that led Obasanjo to defect before recent elections to the opposition that won most votes in Obasanjo's home state of Ogun. The results included the governorship and eight of 11 seats in the House of Assembly.

Kashamu is suing Obasanjo for libel over statements that Kashamu is a fugitive from U.S. justice. He had won a court order halting publication of Obasanjo's autobiography but a judge this week rescinded it, saying Kashamu had misled the court. Obasanjo's lawyer argued that the truth cannot be libel.

President-elect Muhammadu Buhari, a former military dictator, has promised to wage war on corruption.

Education / OAU Produces 150 Phds, 127 First Class Holders by Physicist(m): 12:46am On Dec 09, 2014
http://www.punchng.com/education/oau-produces-150-phds-127-first-class-holders/

No fewer than 150 persons are to obtain doctoral degrees from the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, this year, its Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Bamitale Omole, has announced.

Omole, who announced this on Monday at a briefing to herald the 40th convocation of the university, also stated 127 undergraduates obtained first class from the institution.

The convocation ceremonies, according to him, will hold between December 10 and 12.

He said, “The Senate of the university has approved the graduation of 9,094 first degree graduates drawn from the 13 faculties in the university. The breakdown is as follows: 127 students made first class honours while 2,369 and 4,256 respectively made second-class upper and lower divisions. One thousand two hundred and thirty-two students made third class while 123 students would graduate with ordinary pass.

“For the postgraduate students, 394 will be conferred with postgraduate diplomas, 2,755 with master’s degrees, 73 with Masters of Philosophy while 150 will be conferred with Doctor of Philosophy degrees.”

The VC, who spoke on the challenges facing the institution, noted that its major issue was how to maintain its number one position in Nigeria and moving up the ladder in Africa.

According to Omole, the university has made history by becoming the first ivory tower to be rated the best in the country for three consecutive years on the Webometric ranking organised by the Cybermetrics Labs of Spain.

The VC said, “It is on record that the Obafemi Awolowo University is the leading university in Nigeria in Information Communication Technology with Internet access bandwidth of 600Mbps, which is the largest in the Nigerian university system.

Health / Baby Boy Gets Lead Poisoning From Nigerian Folk Remedy (tiro) by Physicist(m): 8:52am On Aug 03, 2012
A 6-month-old boy was treated for lead poisoning due to the use of the cosmetic known as "tiro," which is used as a folk remedy for promoting visual development, according to a report of the boy's case released today.
The baby was brought to Boston Children’s Hospital with elevated levels of lead in his blood in June 2011, according to the report from researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The boy was born in the U.S. to Nigerian parents.
An investigation revealed the source of lead to be tiro, a powdery Nigerian cosmetic that had been applied to the infant's eyelids. Investigators had examined the family's home and found it was "in excellent condition, without lead hazards," according to the report. The baby was exclusively breast-fed, and was not given spices or supplements.
The powder was 82.6 percent lead, the report said.
The main source of lead poisoning in the U.S. is lead-based paint; however, other sources are increasingly being identified, the CDC said. Imported products such as spices, candy, cosmetics, health remedies, pottery and jewelry have all been implicated.
The case began when the baby's parents brought him to a pediatrician for a well-child visit. The doctor noted the cosmetic on the child's eyelids, and tested his blood for lead. The baby was treated with iron supplements, and referred for further testing at the hospital. The baby was growing well and developing normally, according to the report.
The parents stopped using the product, and follow-up blood tests showed the boy's lead levels were dropping.

Tiro is also called "tozali" and "kwalli," and similar products called "surma" and "kajal" in Asia, and "kohl" in the Middle East, may also contain lead, the report said.
The powder has many uses as a folk remedy, the report said, including relieving eyestrain or pain, and preventing infections in a baby's umbilical cord stump or circumcision wound.
The case shows that certain groups of immigrants may be at higher risk of lead poisoning, the report said. "Educational efforts are needed to inform immigrants from Africa, Asia, and the Middle East that tiro and similar products can cause lead poisoning in children," the researchers wrote in their report. When children with elevated lead levels are brought for medical attention, health care workers should ask about eye cosmetics and folk remedies as a possible source, they said.
Lead is highly toxic and can damage body organs including the brain, kidneys and bone marrow. Young children are especially susceptible to lead because they tend to put things they find on floor in their mouths, and because of differences in their body functions, such as greater absorption in their guts, and still-developing central nervous systems, according to the CDC.
