Religion / Nigeria Faces Increased Ebola Risk As BA Diverts Freetown And Monrovia Flights T by pigin: 11:49am On Aug 27, 2014 |
NIGERIA faces an increased risk of infection from ebola as passengers flying to Sierra Leone and Liberia will have to pass through Lagos from henceforth after British Airways suspended all flights to Freetown and Monrovia until next year. Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea have been the epicentres of the dreaded ebola virus disease (EVD) that has raged across West Africa in recent months, killing over 1,400 people. In a bid to contain the virus, many airlines have cancelled flights to the three countries and many of their neighbours have closed their borders. British Airways is one of West Africa's busiest airlines and flies every week to both Liberia and Sierra Leone from London. To contain the spread of EVD, British Airways has decided to cancel its flights to both countries and divert all trips to Lagos and Accra, urging passengers to get connecting flights from Nigeria and Ghana. This will mean passengers wishing to fly into and out of both Sierra Leone and Liberia will have to transit through Nigeria, increasing the risk of infection. EVD was brought to Nigeria on July 14 when Liberian-American Patrick Sawyer flew to Calabar for a regional summit and infected all those her came in contact with. A British Airways spokesman said: “British Airways has suspended flights to and from Liberia and Sierra Leone until 31 December 2014 due to concerns about the public health situation in both countries. The safety of our customers, crew and ground teams is always our top priority and we will keep the routes under constant review in the coming weeks.” Originally, the airline had previously suspended its flights until September but has now decided to extend this until the end of the year. Normally, the carrier flies four times a week between London’s Heathrow airport and Freetown in Sierra Leone, with a connection to the Liberian capital Monrovia. British Airways said customers with tickets booked on those routes could get a refund, rebook for a later date, or rearrange to fly out of Ghana, Kenya or Nigeria. At the moment, getting out of these countries is extremely difficult as the few flights that remain are over-booked, causing severe delays. Even the World Health Organisation (WHO) has withdrawn its staff from the ebola laboratory at Kailahun in eastern Sierra Leone after one of its medical workers there was infected. WHO had sent nearly 400 people comprising its own staff and those from partner organisations to fight the outbreak across West Africa. “It’s a temporary measure to take care of the welfare of our remaining workers. After our assessment, they will return,” WHO spokesperson, Christy Feig said.http://www.nigerianwatch.com/news/5178-nigeria-faces-increased-ebola-risk-as-ba-diverts-freetown-and-monrovia-flight-to-lagos |

Sports / Albert Ebosse Dies After Head Injury by pigin: 6:58am On Aug 24, 2014 |
Cameroonian striker Albert Ebosse has died after being hit in the head by an object thrown from the stands during an Algerian league game on Saturday, his club JS Kabylie have announced. The 24-year-old was fatally struck by a projectile at the end of JS Kabylie's meeting with USM Alger in Tizi Ouzou. A statement published on Kabylie's website on Saturday read: "The Ministry of Interior and Local Government, speaking through minister Tayeb Belaiz, has given an instruction to open an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of Albert Ebosse. "The JSK player succumbed to a head injury after being hit in the head at the end of the meeting with USM Alger." Ebosse had scored Kabylie's goal in a match that finished as a 2-1 home defeat to USM Alger. Reacting to the news of Ebosse's death, USM Alger published a statement on their own club website. It read: "JS Kabylie's Cameroonian striker has lost his life after being hit in the head by something launched from the stands. "This terrible news is saddening for football in our nation and in Cameroon and arrives like a bombshell just hours after the meeting with USM Alger which was played in Tizi Ouzou. "In these painful circumstances, USM Alger and its members send their deepest condolences to the family of the deceased and to JS Kabylie. May Albert Ebosse rest in peace." Ebosse played for Coton Sport FC, Unisport Bafang and Douala AC in his homeland before moving to Malaysian club Perak FA in 2012. He signed for JS Kabylie in July 2013. soccernet.com |

Friends and family members of a twenty one year a student of Maritime Academy Oron , Effiong Otu are at a loss why he took his life by hanging on a rope in his room on Thursday morning after he was jilted by his girl friend. A family source who gave her name as Ann told CrossRiverWatch that Effiong was found hanging in his room at Diamond Hill a few minutes after he collected a rope from neighbors who became suspicious soon after he went inside his room with the rope wondering what he wanted to use it for. According to the source, when his mother Grace Otu , a nurse at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital left the house at about 3 pm on the day of the incident the young man borrowed a rope and killed himself. “The 10th of July was the 10th year anniversary of his father’s death in a car accident and after the anniversary and everyone had left the house and his mother also went out, he went to the neighbors and borrowed a rope which he took to his room and hung himself” Ann said the neighbors became suspicious what he was doing in his room with the rope and decided to rush there but found the door to the room locked and before they could force the door open he had died” Our source said. She said before he hung himself, he called one of his friends, Adu on phone requesting him to tell his girl friend, Blessing who works with UNICEM that she should now be happy that he has killed himself for her. “Before his friend could rush to the house, the door had already been forced open by neighbors and Effiong’s body was hanging from the ceiling of the house”. Our source said Effiong was an only son of the family and was given the late father’s name as a source of succor for the family but “He has again left us sad and angry with this thoughtless action” Perhaps to give an inkling of his planned action , Effiong had posted on his face book page on the 6th of July the following message “It’s not about being engaged, married or in a relationship. It’s about being happy, safe, secured, relieved and feeling good. It’s about peaceful state of mind, it’s about sleeping at night without the fear of losing what you’ve got. It’s being yourself and not someone else, it’s about feeling LOVED, HAPPY, RESPECTED, UNDERSTOOD, CARED FOR and APPRECIATED.. !!Goodnight my beautiful people!! Efforts to speak with Hogan Bassey, the Cross River State Police Public Relations Officer did not yield any success as his phone was switched off. Mr. Obi Bisong the UNICEM Corporate Relations officer where Blessing is said to be working said he is not aware of any staff by that name “But sometimes some of these people may not be directly our staff but workers of some of our contractors”. Effiong’s body has been removed and deposited at the mortuary of the General Hospital, Calabar crossriverwatch |

Education / Re: Successful People Who Failed At First by pigin: 5:54pm On Jul 11, 2014 |
@op, your list is not completed without Sly popularly known as Rocky by American kids, and Rambo by Nigerian pikins. The hugely famous actor, producer, director Sylvester Stallone had a rough start. His life began with pregnancy complications that changed his fate forever. Stallone’s biography at Wikipedia contains the amazing story : Complications his mother suffered during labor forced her obstetricians to use two pairs of forceps during his birth; misuse of these accidentally severed a nerve and caused paralysis in parts of Stallone’s face. As a result, the lower left side of his face is paralyzed – including parts of his lip, tongue, and chin – an accident which has given Stallone his snarling look and slightly slurred speech. That’s not all. Wikipedia also explains: He spent his first five years in Hell’s Kitchen, bouncing between foster homes while his parents endured a troubled marriage. Photo © Flickr User Gage Skidmore So did Sly go from there to instant success? Nope. In fact, he sunk pretty low and nearly went broke! Stallone had his first starring role in the soft core pornography feature film The Party at Kitty and Stud’s (1970). He was paid US $200 for two days’ work. Stallone later explained that he had done the film out of desperation after being evicted from his apartment and finding himself homeless for several days. He has also said that he slept three weeks in the New York City Port Authority bus station prior to seeing a casting notice for the film. In the actor’s words, “it was either do that movie or rob someone, because I was at the end – the very end – of my rope.” Failure is the secret to success . Stallone endured hardship after hardship before finally finding his path. In fact, the story of Rocky is well-known. The actor wrote the screenplay himself in twenty hours straight, and then kept refusing bigger and bigger offers until someone finally allowed him to play the title role. That kind of denial would usually be thought of as foolish. But for this Hollywood legend, it was the secret to his career. 2 Likes |
