I need an advise from any lawyer in the house. I got a new job and was a given a letter of employment by the HR personnel of the company. I told the HR personnel that I have to give one month notice to my current employer then but she insisted on 3weeks. I agreed with the 3 weeks and sent my letter of resignation giving 3 weeks ahead as my last day with my current employer then. After about a week the HR personnel told me that the company cannot pay me the agreed amount, I told her that I have dropped my resignation letter and there is nothing I can do about it at that point in time.
On the resumption date stated in my letter of employment, I went to the HR personnel and to my greatest surprise she acted as if we have not met before, I had to introduce myself.
She requested for my resignation letter because she was insisting that I might have not resigned when she told me about the salary. Meanwhile, I sent my resignation letter as an attachment through my official email with my previous employer. I provided the copy of the letter and she insisted to get mail itself that I attached the letter. I was not able to get that since I no longer have access to the email.
We dragged this issue for a long time till she admitted that the vacancy no longer exists. I am now jobless for a month now.
I intend to write to my previous employer to confirm that they received resignation letter on the date I sent it to them. Finally, I intend to sue the company for a breach of contract, Please advise if I have a chance to win the case. Thanks for your responses.

You have a very good case here and I’ve seen something similar in my work as a lawyer with a firm of Senior Advocate. Your letter of employment arguably creates a contract of employment Between you and the company and it will be unconscionable for the employer to retract after you have acted upon this letter and taking some steps to align with it.

The law will naturally not force an unwilling employer on an unwilling employer but if handled well, you should be entitled to some damages.

The 2015 presidential election has come and gone but there are some hard lessons in it for business oriented people, entrepreneurs and managers. As an entrepreneur myself, here are some I could distill:

1. NEVER GIVE UP: Never give up because whatever you do know that, persistence surely pays and has its rewards. Buhari contested four times and made it on his fourth attempt. Recall how many times Thomas Edison tried to make the light bulb work? If they had given up, today will never have happened. Many times in business, persistent failures makes us lose hope or become forlorn. Let the Buhari example be your inspiration today. I repeat, Never ever give up!

2. FLEXIBILITY IS THE NAME OF THE GAME!: In not giving up, be strategic and very flexible. After every failure, examine what went wrong, check your team and be prepared to make necessary changes. Buhari changed his party platform from the ANPP in 2003 and 2007 to CPC in 2011 and then the APC in 2015 which eventually gave him victory. Bottom line? CHANGE is constant!

3. IDENTIFY AND MITIGATE YOUR WEAKNESS; THE Osinbajo FACTOR- No one is perfect but everyone must be honest enough to identify their shortcomings. Buhari identified his weakness as a perceived Islamic fundamentalist. Mitigating it with Osinbajo, a pastor in one of the biggest churches in Nigeria worked magic! It's the same in business. You can't know it all or be it all. Identify your weakness and introduce a mitigating factor to it.

4. PUT THE PEOPLE AT THE CENTER: The people you serve and the problems your business seeks to solve must remain at the centre of your product, services and ideas, never forget. Take a good look at Buhari's manifestos and his promises to the people. Equal distribution of wealth, opportunities, security and the fight against corruption. These are the living reality of people which made Buhari an easy buy. In business, identify problems people can relate to and provide simple solution they can own!

5. COMPETITION IS HEALTHY: The recent elections in Nigeria proves this fact! Doubtlessly, the strong opposition made the ruling party PDP work extra hard in the build up to the election. This helped to increase standards and erase some mediocrity. In business, competition keeps you on your toes. It makes you to continually innovate and remain focused and where there is no more records to beat, set your own standards and beat it!

6. COLLABORATION WORKS! So all the major opposition parties came together, formed a unit and went against the ruling PDP. The success was not only resounding but outstanding. Many times in business people tend to struggle alone. Many times also collaboration helps speed up reaching your goals. Think about this today, don’t be selfish, sacrifice personal ambition for common good and activate new partnerships.

7. FOCUS ON SELLING YOUR PRODUCT AND NOT PUTTING DOWN YOUR COMPETITOR: So you have a competitor? Great! Don't forget that your focus and goal remains the same. Selling your product and services to the best of your ability. Imbibing healthy practices from the competitor and checking out what you can do better shouldn't change. Anything you do, never ever put down your competitor, focus on selling your product or you lose your market share. If you doubt me, ask the PDP

Hello everyone. I am compelled to write about my visa experience due to the help I got from the experience of others on this thread. Hopefully, someone else in search of information will find this useful someday.

I had my interview on Wednesday, August 7th, just before the Muslim holidays. I was interviewed by the guy everyone dreaded who was denying people. I was actually praying not to be interviewed by him but lo and behold my number flashed at his counter. I simply imagined the VO was a difficult judge I had to convince about my case I was asked 3 short questions and here is how it went:
Me:Good morning
VO: Why do you want to go to the US?
Me: To attend------conference
VO: And where is that taking place
Me: Boston,Massachusetts
VO: What do you do?
Me: I work as a legal practitioner at -------, I also write for------ and run (VO cuts in)
VO: You are a really very busy young lady (to which i just laughed). I am approving your Visa.

And that was how it went. No question on where I have traveled to, no documents checked, nothing.

I have come to understand that confidence is key and God holds the key.

Good morning all. Abeg, I just got my ticket for the program I'm going for now and my trip was routed through BA to stop in london for 5hours before I connect to Canada. My question is, does anyone know if I need a transit visa?

People I've got a testimony! I had applied for visitor's visa for a short study program. My application got to the embassy January 2nd. I then received an email from the school where I was offered a scholarship that there will be a visa cut off time. I asked for advise here and Siga said na only prayer fit do am. Prayer do am true true oh! I emailed the embassy last monday informing them of the deadline given to me by the school. Them no reply, but today, I have my visa in my hands!

In November 2012, Nigeria was rated the worst place to give birth. Daily, the damning reality of our position continues to stare us in the face.

On Friday, January 25 2013, a middle aged man walked into our office seeking to speak with us. Well dressed, well read, calmly spoken, he took us on his personal and agonizing journey on the state of maternal and child health in Nigeria associated with government failures, failed medical system, medical negligence and a resounding quest for justice. These stories are not peculiar to our visitor, Mr. Adesanya, but are the everyday stories and experiences many have learnt to live with.

In challenging a failed system, you not only seek justice for wrong done but also seek change for the future...

June 22, 2011 marked the beginning of a series of spiral events which changed the lives of the Adesanyas forever. Our visitor’s wife, Mrs. Adesanya had diligently attended antenatal at Somolu General Hospital, Lagos-Nigeria, took all nutritional advice and sought skilled help at every opportunity. At the pang of Labour she headed for Somolu General Hospital where she had pre-registered marking the commencement of labour day one.

LABOUR DAY ONE: On examination of Mrs. Adesanya, the nurses on duty observed a complication and advised that a Cesarean section (CS) be performed on her immediately. This was not considered a major issue as her earlier baby had being delivered via CS at the same hospital. There was however one big snag; No doctor was available to perform the operation that afternoon at the hospital.
Realising the nature of the emergency they had on their hands, the nurses promptly referred Mrs. Adesanya to the Island maternity hospital, Lagos, that same day for an emergency CS. On arrival at the hospital they were met with Dr. Damilola Adeyemo who became immediately furious that a pregnant woman was being referred as she considered it an additional work. She first insisted that no bed space was available forcing the pregnant woman to lurk around the hospital environment until eventually, after much pleading; a bed space emerged for her. Probably still angry at the referral, the doctor insisted on not performing the surgery that day and the pregnant woman was consequently sedated.

LABOUR DAY TWO: A bright Thursday started with fresh hopes. Our visitor, Mr. Adesanya narrated that he arrived the hospital to find his wife connected to an oxygen machine. A nurse on duty had also brought to Mr. Adesanya’s knowledge the fact that the baby was no longer breathing well. Alarmed, he rushed to the doctor he had met the night before at Island Maternity hospital and enquired after when the ‘emergency’ CS will be done as it was becoming obvious his wife was getting weaker and the baby was getting distressed. With obvious disinterest, He was informed that it will be impossible to have the emergency surgery done that day as Island Maternity Hospital do not perform surgeries on Thursdays. Visibly confused and shaken, he informed us that just as he resolved to move his wife to another hospital where the life of the mother and child will be saved, he received a call from Somolu general hospital requesting that he brings his wife for surgery if she is yet to be operated upon. He informed the doctor of his resolve and she gladly released the patient who was clearly weak due to the distress. Back at Somolu General Hospital, upon further examination by the doctor, he was informed his wife had just been fed with food and it will be impossible to perform the surgery that evening. Distraught, he had no choice than to wait till the next day.

LABOUR DAY 3: The operation was finally performed, the life of the baby as well as the mother was saved but with a price...
Armed with series of medical reports, our visitor carefully explains the present medical state of Nicole following her one year 7months on earth:

MRI-BRAIN report conducted by Dr.Subhash Vijayvargiya(Consultant Radiologist) at BT Health &Diagnostics Center Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, (Lasuth) Lagos, Nigeria reveals the following results:
“IMPRESSION: NCMR evaluation of brain reveals, bilateral occipito-parietal(L>R)cortical and subcortical and bifrontal cortical atrophy with ulgyric cortical in the parieto-occipital region. Findings are consistent with THE(Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy)sequence with parasagittal insult.”

Beneath these medical terms lies the reality of life for Baby Nicole who suffers from a condition known as cerebral palsy as a result of a permanent damage and injury to the brain at birth otherwise known as birth asphyxia. The consequences are dire. Developmental monitoring shows that at one year and seven months baby Nicole is unable to sit, stand, hold or grasp object or talk. She is unable to see clearly, hear clearly and also suffers frequently series of seizures.

Birth Asphyxia is the medical condition resulting from deprivation of oxygen to a newborn infant that lasts long enough during the birth process to cause physical harm, usually to the brain. In the more pronounced cases, an infant will survive, but with damage to the brain manifested as either mental, such as developmental delay or intellectual disability, or physical, such as spasticity — in fact, spastic diplegia and the other forms of cerebral palsy almost always feature asphyxiation during the birth process as a major, if not defining, factor. Cerebral palsy (CP) is a group of non-progressive, on-contagious motor conditions that cause physical disability in human development, chiefly in the various areas of body movement.

As the child grows, it is becoming increasingly difficult and painful to manage her medical condition without the necessary medical support or professional accountability from those liable. A number of meetings have been set up with the Lagos State Health service commission with no fruitful result. The frequency of the seizures continues to increase with its attendant’s financial implications while the erring doctor continues to practice without any investigation or disciplinary step taken against her as informed by Mr. Adesanaya.

With misty eyes, Mr. Adesanya makes a passionate plea for justice for his baby.
“Baby nichole is my baby whose future and right to live a normal life has being altered by the negligence of an angry doctor. She could have your baby, anyone’s baby.... All we ask for is justice. Justice to help our baby make the best of the life she has now. Justice to save future babies from this kind of situation. Justice that will usher in change for good. Please raise your voice with us!”

A lot of cases like Baby Nicole’s happen every day. A lot of parents like Mr. And Mrs. Adesanya suffer in silence and are turned permanent carers for the negligence of one whose value for life is doubtful, but you can lend a voice. You can speak until those in authority hear, you can scream until clinical negligence is not tolerated in our medical system, until justice is done. Kindly raise your voice with them.

Hello everyone. I need advice on what to do regarding my visitor's application. I was accepted into a short term study program last year commencing late march this year. I got full scholarship covering travel, stipend, accommodation etc. I applied for visa on the 31st of December and it arrived the embassy on the 2nd of January and I'm yet to hear anything from the embassy. I just got an email from the program coordinator now saying there will be deadlines for obtaining visas as they still have a wait list and that they will be contacting me soon with the deadline, meaning if i don't get my visa by that day i will be deemed to have forfeited being part of the program. I am afraid CDHC may not have reached a decision then because i was told they will be giving other wait list applicants period to obtain their visas to. What should I do? Should I start considering emailing or visiting CDHC? Thank you all in advance

I submitted a Visitor's visa application to VFS on 31st December,it arrived at the embassy on January 2nd and is still being processed according to tracking Info. Didn't really get a lot of information applying for visitor's visa on this thread as it seems to be dominated by study visa applicants

It is very easy to think that these figures are far fetched and grossly exaggerated for the purpose of external funding but you will be surprised it is very true and factual. Every minute across the world, at least one woman dies of pregnancy related complications or at delivery. Nigeria has no proper record keeping for the dead or a data base so an estimate based on experience is likely but the fact is this; Think deeply and carefully, we all know at least one woman who has died at childbirth or a neighbour, sister or relative even a friend who has died of pregnancy related complications.

Unless you work in the field, you will think everyone is exaggerating the figures to get funding. I know of hospitals without basic delivery facilities, I know of the menace of traditional birth attendants due to inadequate health facilities. I have even visited a community health center in Ogun state where all the nurses on duty gave birth at the place of a TBA becos of they know birth at the center means automatic death. I know of another general hospital without electricity and water. I know because my NGO the brown button foundation provided them with electricity and water. Tell me how women are supposed to survive in these community?

The mistake we make is that we sit here in Lagos and other city centers and think everywhere and everything is as rosy as we have it.
