4. My August Visitor Is Here…Again! Menstruation gets dubbed some pretty creative monikers. You may choose an alternative name to save your coworkers or your spouse embarrassment without meaning to come up with such hilarious code names. What are the most popular in Nigeria? Among them are "My August Visitor, " Killing Chicken", “In My Holies” and of course TTOM (or that time of the month), Some of the more creative entries on this list include “giving birth to a blood diamond,” “having your garage painted,” and “the tomato soup is on the boil.” Some of the zaniest euphemisms draw on popular culture; for example, “Kelly Kapowski can’t make it to cheerleading practice” and Of course, you could just “order your clams with red sauce” or “smoke a lady cigar” to get your point across. 5. The Period Taboo If you think women are bashful about their periods in Nigeria, consider what it’s like to have your period in other countries or under other faiths. Menstruation is considered somewhat ritually unclean in certain (I said certain, not all) Hindu, Jewish, and Islamic cultures, and women are not permitted to perform certain religious duties (i.e., fasting or prayer) during menstruation. While Christianity has never outwardly declared menstruation to be “spiritually unclean,” the New Testament does contain a passage in which Jesus “cures” a menstruating woman (Mark 5:24-25). These taboos have spilled over into the secular world. In a U.S. survey, a ”substantial majority” of respondents said they felt it was inappropriate to discuss menstruation openly, particularly in front of a mixed group including men and women. While that survey was conducted in the early 1980s, there isn’t much to suggest that societal attitudes have 6. There Are Plenty of Eggs in Your Basket When it comes to counting the eggs in your proverbial basket—believe me, you are born with more than you’ll need. The average female is born with roughly 2 million eggs at her disposal. By the time she hits puberty, that number decreases to around 40,000. The rate at which women lose eggs depends on many different factors, primarily age and overall reproductive health. One of the most interesting aspects of the egg production cycle plays out before a girl is even born. During the fetal stage, when a baby girl is still in utero, she may have as many as 7 million eggs in her body, a number which will decline by about two-thirds by the time she is born. However, since most women release only 400 to 500 eggs in a lifetime, there’s never any reason to fear you’ll suffer a shortage. 1 Like 1 Share |

Even though most women in their childbearing years menstruate every month, chances are still a few things about your period that you didn’t know. Here are ten facts you likely didn’t know when it comes to your monthly menstrual cycle… 1. Girls Are Getting Their Periods Younger It seems that where the average menstrual age for girls used to be 13 or 14 years old, girls are getting their periods younger. In 2014, the average American female begins menstruation at age 12, which may be caused by a combination of changing diets, environmental stress, and earlier rates of puberty. However, if you’re like me, I was surprised at age 10 by my period; whereas I had friends who waited until the age of 18 to menstruate for the first time. Current research suggests numerous reasons why girls are now getting their periods younger. According to a 2012 article in Psychology Today, there may be links between early onset of puberty and inattentive or inconsistent parenting. Lower birth weights, exposure to chemicals like bisphenol-A (BPA), and childhood obesity have also been cited as possible causes, and several studies have found clinically significant relationships between early menstruation and lower socioeconomic status. 2. Period Irregularity Just as various factors cause the onset of menstruation, period regularity can be different for every woman, and it can fluctuate at various points in life. Irregular menstruation can result in spotting, a late period, an unusually long or heavy period, or missing a period altogether. And it can be spurred by everything from stress and diet to sudden, significant changes in weight or taking certain medications. In particular, researchers have linked anti-epileptic drugs and anti-psychotics to irregular periods. High levels of stress, eating disorders, and benign or malignant tumors can also cause symptoms. According to the National Institutes of Health, menstrual irregularities can be triggered by medical conditions including poorly controlled diabetes, hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, polycystic ovary syndrome, and high levels of prolactin in the bloodstream. Periods also tend to be more irregular during adolescence, pregnancy, and during perimenopause — the unique state a woman enters as she approaches menopause. 3. How Much Blood? During the average period duration, a woman will commonly emit 2 to 4 tablespoons of blood in total. While it may seem like much more due to water retention, most women do not actually suffer excess loss of blood because of “heavy flow.” However, during a so-called “heavy period,” a woman may lose twice as much blood as she normally would, though even very heavy menstrual bleeding does not normally pose a serious health risk. Signs of a heavy period include using abnormally high numbers of pads or tampons, or the need to pair both types of protection together to prevent flooding to clothes or bed sheets. In the majority of cases, there is no identifiable underlying cause for a heavy period, though there are correlations with certain factors. Uterine fibroids, blood-thinning medications, ovary cysts and the use of intrauterine contraception can all increase menstrual blood flow. Orally administered emergency contraception also tends to cause heavier periods, which may last for several months |

DR ALEX OTTI (APGA) Alex Otti is said to hail from Arochukwu in Abia North senatorial zone but his father settled in Umuru, Umuehim in Ehi Na Uguru Ancient community in Isiala Ngwa South council area in Abia Central senatorial zone. According to a resident of the Umuru Otti’s father, Lazarus who was a Pastor of the Seventh Day Adventist church was from Arochukwu but migrated to Umuru, Umuehim community. Born 18 February 1965 Dr. Alex Otti had his secondary school education at Ngwa High school, Aba and Secondary Technical School, Okpualangwa in Abia State where he finished as the Best Student in his set during the School Certificate Examinations. He thereafter proceeded to the University of Port Harcourt for his university education where he graduated with a First Class Honors degree in Economics in 1988. While at the University of Port Harcourt, Alex Otti distinguished himself by graduating not only as the Best Student of the Faculty of Social Sciences but also as the Overall Best Graduating Student for that year. At the University, Alex Otti not only excelled academically but also proved his mettle by taking on various roles such as the position of the News Editor for the school newsletter, Uniport Mirror. In addition, he was the treasurer for the University Chapter of the Nigerian Economic Students’ Association (NESA) in 1986 and subsequently became the President of the association the following year. Alex Otti began his banking career in 1989 with the Nigerian International Bank, a subsidiary of Citibank New York where he worked in the Operations Department. Thereafter he moved to the then Nigerian Intercontinental Merchant Bank Ltd. While at Intercontinental Bank, he worked both in the Treasury and Financial Services unit as well as the Corporate Banking Division. In 1992, he joined Societe Bancaire Nigeria Ltd (Merchant Bankers), a subsidiary of Banque SBA Paris where he rose to the position of a Senior Manager. He moved on to the United Bank for Africa (UBA) as Principal Manager overseeing the Bank’s corporate banking sector for the entire South Division with the responsibility of growing the Oil and Gas business for the bank. Due to his outstanding performance he was promoted to the position of Assistant General Manager in 2000. In May 2001, he joined First Bank of Nigeria, PLC as Assistant General Manager in May 2001 with the sole responsibility of growing the Energy Sector for the bank. In April 2004, he was promoted to the position of Deputy General Manager and a year later was appointed Executive Director, Commercial banking. This was followed by a re-designation as the Executive Director South Directorate, where he was responsible for over 140 branches in both the South-South and South Eastern geo-political zones of the country. In March 2011, he moved from First Bank Nigeria PLC to Diamond Bank as Group Managing Director/ Chief Executive Officer and is in the process of leading the bank through a major transformation. An alumnus of the prestigious Harvard Business School, Alex has attended various international courses including the Executive Development Programmes of the Columbia Business and Stanford Business School and Wharton Business School (University of Pennsylvania). Highly respected for his wealth of knowledge, Alex is on the board of several companies and is also on the board of two of Nigeria’s leading universities. In 2009 he was conferred with an honourary Doctorate Degree by Babcock University and in 2012, an honourary Doctor of Science (D.Sc.) Degree by the University of Port Harcourt. Dr Alex otti in october resigned from his plum job as MD Diamond Bank to run for the governorship of Abia state under the APGA. Otti, has picked a lady, Dr. Eme Uche Eme, as his running mate. Eme, is a renowned teacher from Ohafia in Abia north, studied political science at the University of Nigeria Nsuka (UNN). These two gentlemen will be slugging it out in the arena come next month, both are qualified for the job, both has done incredibly well for themselves in their chosen career, share the same age bracket and are both popular with the people. Now my question is who between these two, who do you think will emerge as the governor of Abia State? BTW, i mean no disrespect to other contenders but i think IMO that the real battle lies between these two gentlemen! http://www.nenyville..com/2015/01/the-battle-for-abia-lies-with-these-two.html?m=1 |
