If you call me for example and I don't know your number, What will it take me to say Hello richy4 speaking.. it's just like a default setting for me.... Then U will say hi to me by calling my name, then introduce yourself to me.... If due to certain reasons you forget to introduce yourself, thinking I know you and might recognize your voice... I will say may I know who is speaking please.... It's just common etiquette and manners.. she is mannerless.

when u said she should have been cautious as a job seeker, were you indirectly implying that she should pretend to be nice while speaking to You as a HR then later unleash the stuff she was made of while working with customers?...No wonder mannerless people occupy customer service positions if U as someone working with HR couldn't see what the other HR saw.... I'm glad that the experienced HR dictated it early.. there were lot of mannerless people in the bank those days especially in First Bank.. Imagine adding this one to their statistics... though I don't know if they were still like that.. .

This is Nigeria sir.
Don't be too quick to judge her "Communication etiquettes". You do not know if she has received scam calls in the past.
You shouldn't be surprised at her reaction, this is typical. She prolly receives all unfamiliar calls in that manner. Did you inform the applicants that they will be contacted via phone number?
Here in Canada, scam calls are common and companies always send emails and set up zoom meetings via emails. If a phone call is necessary, kindly inform the applicant via text message....from ABC company. Let's not be unfortunate please.

No, but she won't be resuming!

She finally lost the opportunity because of a phone call.
She had received the call in the early hours of today, 10:00am precise. It was from the HR department of the bank.

But she didn't say "hello".

Her first remark when she picked was "who's this?"

Before she got any other reply she added "how did you get my number?"

The HR person goes "Am I speaking to Miss xxxxxxx?"

She felt the question is unnecessary! And she gave her final response.

"Please if you don't want to introduce yourself get out of my phone" that was her final word!

I got a feedback from the HR by 12noon today and I listened to that conversation. Those kinds of phone calls are always recorded for reference purposes.

Aunty lost the job because she lacks Phone Conversations Etiquette! I listened to the recorded version of that conversation.

She lost the job because she believes every unknown male caller is a "chyker".

You see? After all it's not always because HR people are "despicable" as they have been labeled by Nigerians!

Why would a Homosapien answer a phone call like this in the year 2020AD?

Watch out! Your next phone call might be your breakthrough! But your ill-manners could cost you the miracle

That was how I was innocently picking and dropping one lady in my department in the office with my car, the very day I bought my car and start driving it to work, we actually stay one estate apart and I thought it wise since she ain't mobile, let me be helping her, of which my fiance knew and was was cool with, fast forward to after 3 months of constant picking her in the morning and dropping her after work at her gate,

Aunty approached me one day and was like
Nick what do you really want from me because u can't be doing all of this and not wanting something in return?

I was so pissed and disgusted by her foolish comment, angry but i did not answer her though, I just smile at her, dropped her at her gate as usual and drove home, immediately I got home, aunty has called me like 4 miss call, I eventually retuned her call and she started apologizing for speaking out of tone, I told her not to worry that everywhere good, but that was the last I drove her in my car, up till date she still apologizing, but I no longer give a fvck, most Nigeria ladies thinks every guy always want to toast them. well I shocked her, because my girlfriend is 100 times more endowed and beautiful than her, what could I be wanting from her biko cheesy
Even at that, her question wasn't out of place. It's just the average Nigerian thing that no help comes out from the blue just like dat. Making her feel less a human doesn't fit in.

The HR person is at fault I am in HR and because of these kinds of reactions, I usually start my calls by introducing myself first so the other person knows who is calling and is at ease. He could have simply said "I am John D calling from bank. That wouldnt hurt. That said, the lady should have been cautious as a job seeker that was just interviewed and expecting phone calls. Lets call a spade a spade please.

When someone says "hello", respond to the greeting first before any other thing. A simple "hello, good morning" shouldn't be a problem for anyone on phone conversation.

The more i read this the more am beginning to think it is fake. Writeup. If HR manager want you to employ mr abc, even if mr abc messed up on the phone they are still going to employe him then train him on his phone manners.

Another example is if personnel director said recruit Mr Abc, and you as the HR assistant or manager called Mr Abc but because mr Abc was rude on the phone to you you are not going to employ mr abc that your director said you should employ.

Oga abeg Stop giving HR people bad name. It is good Friday, am going to save what i think of you for next time.

The HR is at fault. Company do have their own standards operating procedure (s.o.p) now with what i know if am calling you i need to act professional which is

1) introduce myself
2) why am calling
3) am i speaking to mr xyz?
If the answer is yes then i will try to verify if is true or not

That could be any of the following
You full name, address next of kin

If HR cant do all of that then they have failed whole of hr professional.

Go and check youtube check cipd website or people management website. I am active cipd member

That line of his is what 90% of scammers use when calling sm1 grin

Every seasoned HR starts by introducing himself & company before asking for ur name. unprofessionals & scammers do the opposite

I can quite relate with this. I advertised for a direct staff here on NL. A number of CV's came through. I ran an assessment and shortlisted about 6 or so. I called one of the prospects and her immediate response was, " How did you get my number". There and then I knew she couldn't be on my team. I told her in plain language how I got her number and why i thought she wouldn't be able to work with me because we are a service delivery company and there is no how she will cut it with customers if that was her best approach to calls from unknown persons. She struggled to apologise but the boat had since sailed. I wish our people will learn courtesy. It costs nothing.

I will have you know that all guys in my office is mobile, plus I would still give anyone I saw a lift regardless the gender, there is this guy in my estate, that works in a bank, as a marketer, I know how stressful the job can be and as such, I have been taking him to his office gate and dropping him at home every fucking day for the past 2 years, cos his office is very close to mine, so dont judge me cos u don't know me.

You can't test it on the phone trust me. Remember people can put up oscar performance over the phone to get a job

2) thats why we do have probation period in the contract because that will let you know their character etc while in same environment with them.

3) moods do affect the way we react sometimes on the phone. Let assume this said lady's just got a sad news eg husband or family member just passed away and the next call is about the job. how do you expect her to react on the phone?

When calling potential talent always ask if they are comfortable to talk and let them know how long you are going to be on the phone for

thank you... You don't call someone without introducing yourself. You call someone, introduce yourself and ask if the person can take the call at that time, else you can both reschedule at a later hour or minutes so the person will be prepared. How can you just call and be asking if you re speaking with so so so and so without you introducing yourself first. Nigeria HR always acting as demi gods....

May they should be breaking into the homes of their potential employees to see how they will react to total strangers, not just on the phone. Yeye. Even if you are President of Nigeria, when you call someone who doesn't have you number, please introduce yourself ASAP!

They wouldn't need to break into people's homes to know whether a potential employee is rude or not, as an employee of a company you represent the company. The same reason why employers don't like when an employee is in the news for the wrong reasons. I suppose if you are an employer and one weekend you sight your employee fighting in public you'll be comfortable with it.

I don’t see what is wrong with this question. I have been asked that question in English, Igbo and Yoruba. Some rudely, some out of curiosity, some dismissively. Nigerians are paranoid and on the lookout for scammers, so that question comes easily. I simply tell you where I got your number, some would apologize, some would still not be interested in speaking. I will ask if that is a bad time and I can call later. Whichever way it goes, no stress.

Nigerians are hardly ever quick to introduce themselves. They just call and go on till you ask “who is this?” Then they get angry again.

Please keep me in mind for future openings. Don't worry, you'll love my voice when you her me speak cause I am a good singer plus my mummy trained me well to be polite in my dealings with people smiley.
