lets call a spade a spade... The teachers are more closer to the student more than the parent.

Comments on report card should be motivative and constructive and not destructive.

E.g He can be better if he's more active in class

Exactly.....it's the way he passed the message. He was too blunt.

He needs to learn how to be diplomatic.
Re: He Was Sacked For Making Bad Comments On Report Cards by DOCU(m): 8:03am On Apr 27, 2021
The teacher is inexeperienced.
Comments on report card MUST have :
1. Positive side of the child
2. Challenges the child is facing.
3. Way forward

*Though punctual to class, Jack needs to organise his work well: extra classes are needed.*

The most important are the positive side of the child and way forward...most parents are not interested in the problems of the child because they already know that.

For good measure, wisdom is the principal thing.
for example.
He is not active in class could be - "He could do with participating more in class"
She keeps gang in the school could be - "I will suggest the company she keeps is vetted" and so on.
He is a truant - " He needs to improve his attendance in class"

My point is we basically said the same thing but my choice of words were chosen carefully. I mentioned where they need to improve on rather than calling them names.

It is the fault of the school management. No training and mentoring for new teachers.

No template for the type of comments on report cards

He's supposed to be jailed not just sacked. That's how one idiot wrote some nonsense in mY report card.the idiot is dead now, good riddance and no pity.
A good teacher don't condemn and judge a child nor compare children. But they help children by looking at their loopholes and how they can be corrected/molded to become better.

If children were perfect, there won't be need of going to school, a school should teach both moral and academics, and condemning a child is not teaching the child. Most useless teachers like this only end up destroying children confidence, and making them become worst

If a student stole the teacher’s handset, the best way to let the parent be aware is through summoning the parents to the school or sending the message to the parents to get them informed. Not through the report card

If any Teacher has any resentment for a student, it is better for the teacher to make a comment on the report card solely on academic performance of the student and leave the personality alone.
you actually don't know what you're talking about.

You don't know the essence of a report card and the information it is intended to contain.

I think you're the type of parents that prompted the proprietor to fire the teacher in this story. It's shame you want your kids to be painted as angels when you're raising absolute touts.

Which employer will see this kind of report card later in the future and employ the child having such comment by his/her class teacher?[/quote]
Buhari made Pantami a Minister and we really don't care about that. How much more. grin
By the way, the comments though helpful, the parents of today will not see such as helpful. Maybe the comments should have been reserved for the Parent-Teachers' meeting.

I wonder the kind of people establishing schools nowdays, for you to be a proprietor or proprietress of a school you need to have studied EDUCATION in school so as to have the clear understanding of how to handle your school and the entire staff.

My friend made some comment on some of his students report card and he is in trouble now.
These are some of the comments:
"He is not active in class"
"She keeps gang in the school"
"He is a truant."
"She is rude and not respectful",
those are some of the comment he made, and the proprietor told him to go and apologize to the parent for the comment made on their children's result, the guy has refused and has been fired for nt apologizing.

Whats your opinion on this?
did you get any comment that made your parent to be mad at you while in secondary school?

Written and spoken words are different. He could have discussed with parents instead of writing letter to them in form of report cards.

Truth?

For a kid that doesn't know the left from the right.

There is such a thing as age of accountability.

Those remarks doesn't seem like one for kids, it's more like a secondary school report cards..
Pry school can't play truance, keep gangs to my best of knowledge

If any has been a teacher before he or she would understand better..
The level of premium parents and school onwers place on their kids is the kind of results they get on the kids..

I thought in a pry school for seven years and graduated 5sets of pry 6 pupils. The ones that their parents allowed to be deciplined were far better than those who were the " leave my child, after all I pay school fees".

You all saying call the parents for a meeting, I can tell you categorically that any parent that would reject a true comments about the child would not come for meeting. You will hear "I'm busy let them do their job"

Any mind you, anything a child does at school, he or she must have done it at home. And the parents directly or indirectly know about it, they just want it to be corrected in school "after all, they pay school fees"

This is a pry school experience not SSS and school on mainland.

Some of his comments are inappropriate but I see nothing wrong in "he is not active in class". However, I will still put the blame on the school because I'm 100% sure he was never trained on how to make such comments.

Private schools are awful in overworking staffs and assigning tasks to staffs without bothering to train them. Why won't things like this happen. The worst is the proprietors feeling like gods that must be worshipped.

shallow reasoning and backward mentality.

If you are a reasonable parent, you will understand that visiting the school and seeing your child’s teacher is the best way to know your child and not waiting for the report card comment

Some parents don't come to school at all, even after you've invite them over...

To come for open day, is another problem for them... Some have not collected 2nd term reports cards even ontop sms and WhatsApp messages...

Be reasonable for once. You leave home 4am to beat traffic and couldn't make it back home until 10pm.

So, ask yourself, Mr unshallow reasoner with forward mentality, how such a parent will have time to visit the child at school.

If your child is bad, don't seek to cover it up. Let it be reported so that you can know and discipline him adequately.
And the mother also has that kind of schedule?

If at no time you have, visiting your child in school once in a term or deemed it fit having the class teacher’s phone number to ask about how the child fairs in school, I’m sorry cos you aren’t fit being a parent.

Are you living on Mars? In this day and age? Parents go to school to check on their children? grin grin grin grin grin grin

Calm down, only very few parents do that. In fact, learning good morals, being respectful and other good manners which normally should be learnt in the home have now been pushed to the teachers and school, parents are too busy to know what is going on.

So while your comments are well intentioned, they would not work.

Do you know that some students use their school fees to play bet9ja?
Do you know that some students jump the school to go to wherever during school hours?
Do you know that some students have refused to bring their parents to school even after the student has been asked to do so by the school authority?

I taught during NYSC, so i know what I am talking about. I know what I saw.

Amotolongbo:

Best thing is to visit your ward’s school occasionally to ask about his/her comportment from the class teacher and not this nonsense on the report card

Can you tell me why it is called report card. Why there is a column for teachers to make their comments.

I doubt if they even know the meaning of report card, I attend a public sec school so the teacher is still lenient in his use of words, I understand if the school is trying to protect her business but monikers here saying teachers shouldn’t give moral assessment of their students is very bad and a very stupid take

you write stuff like

he needs improvement in algebra
his grasp of BODMAS is very strong
etc etc

It's okay. We learn everyday. Without disputing your claim as I have NEVER seen a 'civilized first world country report card comment', I have actually seen first world country guides to comments on report cards. And they actually incorporate behavioural assessments a lot. See for yourself HERE.

Lol. I have never heard of job seekers being asked to bring their report cards from primary or secondary school as CV. It is really shocking that people are using it to defend this nonsense. Sacking a man that said the truth. And we want Nigeria to be a great country. We dey deceive each other for this country.
Iseoluwani:

since when did you use a report card to search for job or submitted it with your CV.

the teacher wrote the truth and u feel like it is demoralizing, u guys are simply part of a failed community. I faced a similar situation with the guy, in that they told me not use red pen to write in the report card, I told them I can't rewrite what I have written.

Nothing wrong with making comments on pupils/students' report card. The only thing is that those comments tend to be negative and judgmental. He could have written things like;
"He needs to be more active and engaging in class"
"She needs guidance on the type and manner of friends she keeps"
"He can learn to be more punctual and present in class"
"She needs to learn how to be more respectful and cordial to classmates and teachers"

Such positive assessments will not come across as too harsh and negative. But the essential message will be passed nonetheless

Can he also allow this kinda comment to be written on his own card?

Private schools are the proprietors’ business and no one will stand watching and allow his business to be spoilt by a silly person.

The school has principal and proprietor. If any student is rude or disrespectful, why not reporting the student to the proprietor or teacher who will find a way of reaching out to the parent?

Pass the right and truthful comment on the academic performance of the student and leave the moral part for the principal to handle

This kinda silly comment can have a way of affecting the students’ future if one is not careful.

He needs to be sacked. The comments are unprofessional and tell me he is not good enough to be a teacher. If he doesn't know what should be written in the comments box .... what else he doesn't know? Comments box is about the child's performance . Behaviour problems need to be discussed with the parents. He is bad for business.

This is usually the practice. I'm almost sure the management would have done so when the complaint came up. But I think the teacher should apologize too. So that there won't be bad blood between the teacher and ward/parents. Claims of victimization can easily come up if the bad blood isn't cleared.

The school made a terrible mistake by not having a template for comments, by not checking teachers comments in the report cards, by not training and mentoring their teachers.

Apology from the school settles this not a personal apology from the teacher
