I got alot while in school like put more effort in mathematics, there was even one day my teacher remarked he plays alot in the class the beating that day nor be mo moi. It helped reset my brain!

What am trying to say is this teachers are closer to your kids and so they tend to know the strength/weakness, positive/negative trait of a child no need hiding the truth.

Personally if you give a remark about my child is left for me to see that the child turns from such. Nobody ones to hear the truth anymore reason we are where we are today "No morals anymore"

And from the submission, I didn't state my methods of discipline so how did you come about the "archiac mentality of discipline"?

And you wait till the end of the term/session to have all these information about your child on the report card?
Then you are a bad parent.

If you do visit your child’s school occasionally and familiar with his/her teacher, you will know all these before the end of the term and make necessary corrections.

True and what happens when the parents refused to act in the feedbacks?

What happens in the case of parents that don't even visit their wards in school, nor check their notes, or call teachers to ask about their wards?

You strike me like one of those parents.

For your information, I am not just a teacher but an educationist with high levels of qualifications and specialisation in guidance and counselling.

You are totally off, there is a reason moral and character assessment is included on every report card. If you or the proprietors are not cool with such feedbacks, then you guys should only relect academic assessment on the report cards.

I am done talking to ignorant people who are trying hard to show up their ignorance

This is a major factor that has led to the decadence of the educational system. Most Karen's wants a good comment about their ward, but know they behave opposite

Excellent piece and that's the purpose of that section of the report card. Teachers spend more time with the children more than the parents and children express alot of their bad behaviours when away from home, so anyone that shuts the school system from giving him honest feedback about his children is messing up big time!

Can you allow this kinda “truth” be written in your ward’s report card?
Why not?
Could remember when I was in pry 3, the teacher wrote “ He is troublesome” in my report card. My parents being a teacher understands he was just being truthful so they called me and made it known how disappointed they are. They don’t even complain about the woeful performance

I have noticed an emerging trend. School owners are now more interested in the business side of things than in giving the pupils under their charge a wholesome education. For this reason, they pander to the whims of parents who are actually no better than glorified babies themselves.

In the past, no one would castigate a teacher for making a negative but true comment about a child in a report card. On the contrary, the parent of the said child would give him or her a well deserved beating for being naughty enough to warrant the comment.

This points to how spoilt children of these times are. Is it any wonder then that many of them end up morally corrupt, impolite and without scruples? If I were the parent in question, I would thank the teacher for being observant and then take steps to correct my child accordingly. The times have indeed changed, and not in a good way.

Sometimes you wonder what the column for remark is met for.

If only some parents understands the importance of it and its benefits to their wards. " he is not active in class, or he keeps gang is not derogatory its met to correct and help ur child.

While I was growing up I can still remember the first thing my parents do while checking our result before even checking your position is your remarks, They don't bloody care if you come out top in your class with a bad remark.

Your certificate is meant to be withdrawn and never be allowed to practice again if this is the nonsense you could come up with.

So the parent who could not visit a teacher and student in school, check the pupils’ notes nor call the teacher to know about the performance of the pupil will now have the time to check the child’s report card and make necessary corrections?
The reason why the child is morally bankrupt in school is because the parents of such act mentioned have no time for the child

Do you think corrections on children’s academic and moral performance is something one does only once and leave the child without constant monitoring for improvement.

I’m sorry and so unfortunate the nation still has people like you still practicing and bragging of being a teacher and G & C

So if I want to know how my child is performing in class, the only place to know is through the comment on the report card?

What happens to the place of visiting the school and make the enquiry from the class teacher on how my ward is fairing morally and academically?

I wonder the kind of people establishing schools nowdays, for you to be a proprietor or proprietress of a school you need to have studied EDUCATION in school so as to have the clear understanding of how to handle your school and the entire staff.

My friend made some comment on some of his students report card and he is in trouble now.
These are some of the comments:
"He is not active in class"
"She keeps gang in the school"
"He is a truant."
"She is rude and not respectful",
those are some of the comment he made, and the proprietor told him to go and apologize to the parent for the comment made on their children's result, the guy has refused and has been fired for nt apologizing.

Whats your opinion on this?
did you get any comment that made your parent to be mad at you while in secondary school?

He should have apologized. I once worked in a private school teaching maths and further maths 10 to 12 years ago. The proprietor increased pass mark from 40 to 50 and said any failure below 50, the child would repeat. Off course no student failed my subject. One needs to be careful the words used on a report card. Also note that long after leaving the school perhaps decades, that child may still have negative impression about the teacher and not the school, that would be damaging/detrimental to the teacher future well-being.

If a student stole the teacher’s handset, the best way to let the parent be aware is through summoning the parents to the school or sending the message to the parents to get them informed. Not through the report card

If any Teacher has any resentment for a student, it is better for the teacher to make a comment on the report card solely on academic performance of the student and leave the personality alone.

Oh! So after inviting the parents telling them that their child stole the phone and was caught, writing a remark on the report card he should pray for the child or skip writing any report.
Like,

"Ayo stole phone and we hope he will change"

"May God have mercy on his soul, he is trying to change"

" Kunle is a very promising boy, he will stop stealing"

"I am short of words for Lukman"

Or, he should just not write any remark because he must not offend the parents.

There is nothing bad in saying the truth on the report card about the character of a child. It is for his or her future benefit. We received such remarks from our teachers in those days and rather fighting the teachers our parents scolded us and we didn't die. It makes you wanna change from your bad ways.

These comments are nonsense and unnecessary.

Can he also allow this kinda comment to be written on his own card?

Private schools are the proprietors’ business and no one will stand watching and allow his business to be spoilt by a silly person.

The school has principal and proprietor. If any student is rude or disrespectful, why not reporting the student to the proprietor or teacher who will find a way of reaching out to the parent?

Pass the right and truthful comment on the academic performance of the student and leave the moral part for the principal to handle.
The fact is that a good parent doesn’t need waiting for the comment on the report card before knowing how well his/her child is behaving in school. Regular visiting and/or contacting the class teacher on phone gives the parent the knowledge of the child’s behavior in school. This will bring about a prompt correction and not having to wait till the end of the term.

This kinda silly comment can have a way of affecting the students’ future if one is not careful.
Which employer will see this kind of report card later in the future and employ the child having such comment by his/her class teacher?

True words.

With the look of things, Nigeria has not started spoiling.

I don't know when employers started asking for report cards when each level has a final report.

I also thought the report cards is a total evaluation of the child's performance for the period under review?

How would a child have the mental fortitude to face life if he/she is not properly accessed from birth?

Na wa o.

I am not an advocate of Nigeria will be better someday. It should start now. Schools have been told by ministry of education (atleast I can say that of Oyo state) that u are not permitted to use red pen inside report card that it demoralizes the students.

Are they advocating that we should support and teach mediocrity. I was once told, not to repeat a child,. I should keep pushing him. Will that child in the nearest future be fruitful to the country....

Hide the truth in a private school. We need to understand things as smart people so you'll not be thinking in one direction like pantami.

When my teacher nearly flogged hell out of me for not been able to catch up academically my mum went to warn the teacher.

It later came to my understanding that ive had slow motor skill from birth. I had to confirm from my aunt that it took me time b4 I started talking and walking. Presently i hardly talk.

Many teachers have a lot of student so they only focus on the brilliant ones and regard the ones with different nature as rude and unintelligent .

That teacher is prideful ignorant and not ready work.

If i own a private school, I will not hesitate to fire that teacher for dereliction of duty, for fatally abandoning his duty, for not doing his job.
He was given a child that is not active in class. His job is to make the child active in class. He was given a child that is a truant. The teacher's job is to change him from being a truant. He was given a child that keeps a bad gang, and he cannot motivate and inspire him to make his life useful and leave the bad gang. If the child is left to that trajectory, maybe he will end up as a cult member in when he enters university. Maybe he will become an armed robber or something worse later in life. The parent is paying so much money to raise a good child, a teacher that did not do his job is writing rubbish on the child's report! that teacher should go to jail for dereliction of duty
