Please I need advice, any advice. I graduated with a 3rd class in Chemistry from three years ago (I only blame myself for that) and after I finished my NYSC a year ago I just plunged into a depressive state in regards to my mistake (my education) and my future (career) sometimes breaking down in tears when I think of things I've taken for granted in my life. I started working on myself a few months ago and I've made some progress I proud of but every now and then it's easy to be overwhelmed with self doubt. I made a cv without work experience along with a cover letter a few days ago and applied for a few entry level jobs like graduate intern, sales, restaurant supervisor etc via jobberman and the companies email but I'm not too sure I'll be getting any calls from them. I didn't come here to get sympathy just an honest advice or opinion on what to do. Can I do a pgd in chemical engineering or just chemistry or pursue a business or computer/tech course, are there jobs I can get with my degree maybe to get skills and work experience? Don't blame yourself for graduating with a 3rd class or not having work experience. Blame yourself for your lack of direction. I think it is better if you say ‘seeking direction’ rather than ‘with no direction’ … seeking direction itself is a good direction. Also I think you need to stop seeing yourself as inferior. Try to take your circumstances as an opportunity to propel more. If job is not forthcoming, It may be God telling you that he did not intend you to be an employee but an employer. Rather than applying as a supervisor in a restaurant, you should be able to start one for instance. If you still feel oriented towards academics, you have to ask yourself, to what end that is. Is it to equip you to be employable? How many of your classmates are working in a chemistry related role? If there (they) are, maybe continue down that road then. Whatever skill you learn or acquire, you should ask yourself…to what end. If it’s to increase your chances in the labor market; that sounds reasonable but are there better reasons that could inform your choice? Allow the opportunities that surrounds you inform your decision. I know young medical Doctors selling hair, I know barristers or law graduates doing events planning and I know many engineers working as tellers in the bank, unfulfilled in the role. Look at the informal sector and do so with your best efforts. There’s certainly something for you there if your intent to make something meaningful of your life is strong enough. othermen:Thank you. Please what would you suggest? I was thinking maybe I should do a pgd in chemistry or chem engr. (if that's possible) so at least I can have a fighting chance applying for shell, moni pulo or maybe nnpc because oil& gas is why I choose chemisty, I don't know.. 2 Likes |

First things first, stop pitying yourself and stop encouraging people to pity you. You have a third class, so what? Employers don't want to see the 3rd class on your CV, so remove it and just put B. Your certificate is just a mere paper. What will determine your how successful you will become for me is: 1.Knowing God for your self 2.Change your mindset. Use a year to reprogram ur mind. U can't go far with the way I see u think about yourself 3.Develop street smartness 4.Skill upgrade. @Op, you graduated with a 3rd class & you are there crying foul, some pple nor near school gate. If you want to aquire more papper, go for a Pgd, before switching to the course you want. By the time you hit the real world you will kwn that your 3rd class even the 1st class is irrelevant, and you will realize that you have been wasting your time after all these years of graduation. You are just wasting your time in depression & self pity, dust up your self & keep moving. The world is looking for entrepreneurs, innovator's, Creators, nobody send what you graduated with, the secret in skills,that is what will market you to the world. Dear OP, The fact that you finished with a third class shouldn't mean the end of the world and the blame game wouldn't help you either. Yes you finished with a third class and all hope seems lost but it really isn't. This is the time to actually fight harder and smarter and learn from the mistakes of your past. Applying for jobs is an okey move but know that even first class and second class in nigeria never see job finish so I'll advise you to think outside the box in your search as connections is what would serve you best right now. I know it's though but I want to assure you that there is always light at the end of the tunnel. You just have to work harder and smarter from now on. Good luck. Dizzyish:Bro, the best advice anyone can give you is to start an online business!!!!! Self publishing on Amazon, while difficult at the start, is an online business you can start with no money. You can start by publishing low content books with just a laptop and internet connection. Check the thread for that here on nairaland or buy a course to make things easier.
