I exercise a lot so no fear.

This thread means nothing to the average Nigerian. Many of us consume water majorly. Soft drinks are at most three times a week. Go outside the country and see people consuming these things with every meal. Their water tastes boring and cold, the only reason you’ll drink it heavily is if you’re into sports. To even hydrate daily I had to mix two litres with Ribena.

The ree are Nigerians that are addicted to soft drinks. I have a friend who hasn't drank water in a year. Just drinks.

...the sugar in a plate of semo, amala, akpu, pounded yam, etc. Will amount to about a box of cube sugars. The irony here is that the glucose and other monosaccharides in these drinks are a form of carbohydrates just like the disaccharides in complex sugars like sucrose (normal sugar)
.
Although all carbohydrates are reduced to glucose and consequently glycogen which are stored in the liver in complex metabolism reactions in the body, you cannot exactly compare these simple sugars to normal sugars.
.
And ironically, the malt we so much prefer to soda drinks contain Maltose which are complex sugars. A molecule of maltose can comparatively yield two molecules of monosaccharides in these soda drinks.
.
My point is that starch and carbohydrates like corn syrups and the foods I mentioned up there are much worse than these drinks. And although their intake should be controlled...it would be a futile endeavour if you keep supplementing them with excess starchy foods.
.
Malt is not a saviour either.
great write up.so true.

Sugar is good for the body!

Whatever you drinking, always librate with water!

And then, if you’re the type that does exercise, you’ve got nothing to worry about!

If you think these things you mentioned will kill you fast, try hunger.
Everything we eat actually contains sugar apart from vegetables.

The problem is not just the sugar because our daily meals have sugar content. The problem is Nigerians do not burn this excess sugar. Kids food and drinks contains a lot of sugar because their body metabolism is high and they need the energy to play rough play. You as an adult can't keep up with such level of activity.

Who told you Nigerians don't burn excess sugars
How many people in Nigeria work from home
How many people in Nigeria do online education
Like you get in other countries

There is nothing you want to do in Nigeria that you won't step out of your house...

Nigeria has lower numbers of obsessed people compared to USA...

We need infrastructure that would enable people take bicycle or even walk to work...
Most of our roads don't have walk lane nor bicycle lane...

Please tell them. All these energy-drinking generation that would hardly impregnate a woman or last 5 minutes except they high-up their libido.

To make the matter worse for themselves, they'd now buy energy drink or liquor which already contained heavy concentration of sugar and mix it with soft or carbonated drinks, another liquid with heavy sugar content. If you ask them, they'd say they're balling....balling to their doom.

Stop saying what you don't know, cassava, garri and yam are bad but not compared to soft drink. Soft drink is made up of simple sugar, the body doesn't even need to metabolise it. It enters the body and immediately spikes up blood sugar. But yam, cassava, etc are broken down gradually by the body releasing it's sugar slowly into the body. Even though it still spikes blood sugar but not compared to sugar. That is why simple sugar has a high glycemic index than this foods.
