CHIOMA.
I had made friends with a female police officer. She was usually in the night section. She was a huge, tall officer with an unfriendly face. She never smiled and she was brutal. She was one of the harshest *if there's any word like that in the dictionary* officers in the station.
Infact, she intimidated the men in the office. She was capable of torturing anyone of any size, she wasnt afraid of anything. I even saw the way she spoke to the commissioner of police the other day, without respect. And it was then i later got to know that her father was a late IG.

Her name is Officer Ibeh. But she was called OI. Everyone feared her in the station. Everyone.

Whenever Kainene or Mabel brought food for me in the station, she would join me and we'll eat it together. She usually told me that she loved eating with her friends, and when she said that, she still wasnt smiling.

And now i need her help. No one was going to help me in this except her. I wasnt trying to escape the cell, no far from that. I just wanted an easier way out of this issue.

'OI!' i called. She was passing with a baton in her left hand, her chest heaving and she was sweating. Maybe she just dealt with a stubborn prisoner from the other cell.

She retraced her steps and rested her head on the railings 'what?'

I stood up and dusted my prison uniform, then i went to her. I glanced at the other inmates and they all seem to have their head down due to OI's presence. Sometimes, when she was in an extremely bad mood, looking at her was an offence, a serious offence.

'good morning' i greeted.

'there's nothing good about the morning please!' she snapped 'how many times have i told you i hate being greeted?'

'what is it? Why did you call me? Has your daughter brought food for you?'

'no. Not yet. But she'll soon be here'

'then you have no reason calling me' she made to walk away.

She stopped and shot me a fierce gaze. I knew the reason she was even conversing with me was because i was her friend - or so i thought.

She retrieved the keys from her pocket 'i just hope you're not planning to kill me, because you inmates, you all can be dangerous'

I laughed 'i wouldnt even dream of killing you in my next life'

'and hope you know i'm Methusaleh' she unlocked the cell.

For the first time, i saw her fighting a smile. And then i wondered why she never smiled. What happened?

After i stepped out of the cell, she locked the door and led me to her small cubicle. She told me to stand while she sat on the white plastic chair there. She opened a chilled bottled water and downed it down her throat, after that, she sighed.
Then she faced me abruptly, as if suddenly remembering that i was there 'yes? You said you wanted to tell me something'

'yes' i told myself to be bold. I knew what i wanted. I knew what was going to be best for everyone 'i want you to help me get....'

'i really dont know whats your motive in this country son' my father stated 'i think its high time you go back to California and resume your work which you've abandoned for a long time. Whats your motive? You've been here for over two months now and you've not been doing anything useful. Dont you think you should go back?'

I sighed 'dad, like i told you earlier, i came back to fetch a wife. I'm here to find the mother of my kids'

'Kainene?'

'in that case, you're not ready to get married'

'do you think i'm going to allow you marry that girl knowing how diabolic their family is? Do you know her mother is in prison right now? Do you know how many people she killed just for that hotel to be as successful as it is right now?'

He nodded 'yes, i heard that. I was even invited to her wedding though i was supposed to be at the reception'

'the reason her so called husband to be left her was because she slept with another man just three weeks before her wedding'

'hmm, all this small small girls of nowadays that wont tie their chain one place. Going around the place and looking for whom to devour. Well, the choice is up to you son. I personally do not like Kainene, we do not know what she's capable of right now. Innocent face no be Innocent mind, i remember your mother's friend, whats that her name again, Onome, thats Kamsi's mother right?'

'yes'

'she was always saying than an innocent face isnt an innocent mind right from time. Moses, choose wisely. I really dont like that girl. Besides! Aha! Now i remember! Didnt you see the papers? She's engaged son'

I rolled my eyes. Kainene was mine, whether engaged or not engaged and i'll go any length to prove it to anyone.

Kelvin had saved me again. This time around, he hadnt saved just me. But my unborn child too. I placed my hand on my bump. I growled in hunger. I was in an orange shirt that obviously was his. And i was in the small bathroomsize-like he called his house. Apart from the rickety bed and a blue handless plastic chair and a wooden stool, there was no other furniture in the house. He had scratches all over his face and when i'd asked why, he had said he and Nathan had gotten into a fight.

He came into the room with a small tray in his hands. He smiled at me, then lowered it on the stool. I looked at the food and i felt like puking.

It was yellow rice. Obviously made from palm oil. I could see the big crabs all over the food making it look even more digusting. And there there was boiled egg placed on top of the rice.
What was this? He couldnt even afford chicken or turkey or even fish? Didnt we pay him salary? Monthly for that matter.

'you dont like it?' he asked. He had probably seen the look on my face.

'no not that' i tried to be nice 'i just, i was just wondering what type of rice this was. I've never seen anything like this. Why is it this yellow?'

'because its oil rice. Its usually called ogbanje rice. Or MTN rice' he smiled broadly 'try it. And you'll like it'

'uhm...' my stomach growled in hunger. I was very hungry but i couldnt eat this. But i had no choice, i wasnt in my house and going back there looked like a bad idea to me. Nathan could easily trace me there 'i'll try it but i dont eat eggs. You dont have meat or fish in this house?'

I saw the embarrassed look on his face, but he quickly covered it with a smile 'sorry dear. I'll...i'll rush over to the market later and buy meat and fish for you. I'll use it to prepare ofe nsala, would you like it?'

'whats ofe nsala for crying out loud?' i scooped a spoonful of rice into my mouth. I liked it, but it was just local compared to my taste.
