The ignorant folks here supporting this nonsense, I forgive your stupidity but the fact that Fashola thinks this makes sense is completely shameful.

An ignorant man calling informed people correcting him ignorant.
Understand the politics now. We have to sell power to them because if we don't, they will be forced to dam river Niger from there end in order to generate hydroelectricity and since the water flow to our dams is from there end due to the elevation, no water will be getting to our dams that can generate reasonable electricity and so our dams will be starved of water so we won't be able to generate power. So to discourage them from doing that, we have to sell power to them.

Testimony!!
For the first 8months I hv been in Benin Rep. There has never been blackout, that was 6yrs ago. Till date there can only be blackout when there is a stormy weather/ rain. From month to month, there will be blackout 4 only about 6hrs and that's because of weather or faulty areas. There was I time when the transformer that supplies us power in my area blown up, me being a Nigerian thought that light has gone 4ever in that my area, this happened at midnight, I woke up d next morning, carry all rechargeable appliances to my office because I don't hv a generator. Could u believe that wen I came bk from work, I saw light, I went to the place d transformer was, and behold a new one being installed. I weeped 4 Nigeria. Had it been in Lagos or Onitsha where I hv lived b4, all d houses must contribute 4 a new transformer which will take generation to fix.
What am I trying to say, until when Nig govt stop playing politics with everything, they will never get it rite. Roads built here stay as long as 20yrs without repair, but in Nig, roads don't last more than 2yrs it will become unmotorable . Nig govt is never serious when it comes to infrastructural development, they want to promise u good roads and electricity in every of their campaign. May God help d masses.

Why are we not thinking of other means of adding power to our grid? What happens to solar? In developed countries they make use of every means. Why can't we think outside the box?

Explain what you would do in this situation if they decide to block river.

I guess they'll take a fistful of cash maybe. They need the power as much we do to develop.

But how do you block a river like that without untold ecological catastrophe. Think about what you're saying for a minute. Blocking that river will flood an area the size of Benin republic within 9 months. Not having anything about these thoughtless agreements drawn up decades ago but we should have moved past that by now and thus government has the opportunity to bring about change not excusing it.

Fashola is speaking English. That one is a cover up for the cabals enriching their pockets with the generators imported on a daily and fuel Nigerians burn their hard earned money for.

I should not be replying you because you obviously failed to read or understand or both.
The rivers from which water is flowing into our dam is situated in some of these countries and in order to prevent blockage and to keep the river flowing into our dams we need to sort of give them an incentive or some sort of compensation so we make them pay for the electricity just as you and I also pay.

Oga ur claim of Blockage is lame, the river is nature's gift and has a course, they can't block the river, except the block the source. The source of the river is from Guinea and runs through Mali, Niger, Benin, Nigeria and terminates into the Atlantic. So no country can lay claim to ownership neither can they block it's flow.

You are a fool. He meant "explain what you will do if they build their own dam" do you know what a dam is? Okay if you don't know, when they build a dam, they would control the flow and use the water velocity to generate light. By the time the water gets to Nigeria, it would not flow as thick and fast as it is currently thereby reducing the electricity we can get from it.

We should renegotiate? They are so wise like you that they will collect money so they can put the money inside their TVs and Globes? Or maybe we should give the fuel, they can buy a giant generator for their whole country? Old mumu

All these ignorant softheads here defending Nigeria giving electricity to insignificant countries like Niger and Benin should cover their heads in shame. What's a archaic kanji dam still doing in service when we know it can't even power all of Lagos sufficiently?

Countries are investing in nuclear generation of power like South Africa which was already producing above 40 thousands mega watt before embarking on building nuclear plants. Nigeria can only boast of 4 thousand mega watt and still selling electricity to her neighbours when she's already carrying ECOWAS services, logistics and dues of the region on her shoulders.

Niger republic's economic is dependent on the Cotonou border and the trade that goes on their. Can't Nigeria leverage on that?

Dumb move from dumb leaders!

If a river is international river(a river that pass more than one country), then you can't block it. The international law prohibit it.

You can build a Dam, but the Dam is prohibited by international law from blocking all the water from reaching other countries.

People were oblivious of an agreement between the French colonial authority and the British colonial government of Nigeria in 1955 when the British was proposing to dam river Niger and about the same time the French colonial authority wanted it for Niger and other French territories under their control because River Niger from the Futa jallon hill flow through the French territory to Nigeria. Thence an agreement was reached to supply Niger through Brininkebi
Most people don't know that Kainji Dam was not the project of independent Nigeria except that when we got Independence we muddled up a Power station which was proposed for 1200 MW by the colonial authority and we could only achieve 320 MW in 1969 and that was when Gowon said " Money is not our problem but how to spend it" and see where we are today.
It will be recalled that a similar British colonial master in the Old Gold Coast commenced a similar Hydro project for which Kwame Nkrumah completed at their Independent with 1000MW Akosombo Dam and whereas in the Nigerian case we were able to do just 320 MW out of 1200MW.

Even if there is fire in the house, you first of all put out the fire that is burning you before you put out the one that is burning your child not to talk of outsider.
So where is the money realized from the sale so far or is it for free.

Why do you mind those fake intelligent faceless e-warriors . All they think about is how to defend the failings of every govt . I still believe successive govt have all sworn to never allow us be self sufficient without needing to buy fuel for generators. They know with electricity, Nigerians will be too powerful than politicians if not they can negotiate something else with those poor nations that will take something else if offered

mars123:
how much MW are we generating? It isn't enough for you and I but our government is willing to share to other countries for money? This is not how countries that want to advance behave. It is laxity to agree to such demand.

No wonder Nigerians are suffering. We have a very poor thinking government. A government that doesn't care for its people. Do you think if Aso rock depended on that current its giving out, it will continue to give it out? But because its Nigerians that need it right?

What if they create their very own dams ?
That invariably puts an end to project Kanji Dam

So ar u trying to say, sir, that if a dam is constructed before Kainji dam that Kainji would not be able to generate electricity again? In other words u would mean that if I choose to build another dam just before Lokoja for instance that it won't be able to function because of Kaniji that is there before it? Is it ur point or am I misunderstanding u, sir?

My point is, since Nigeria barely has enough electricity for itself why not use her economic power in the subregion to negotiate other ways of compensation instead of selling what she doesn't have? (2) The honourable minister wasn't even taking about alternative source of power generation when other African countries with less electricity demand have gone nuclear. But he was still hitting on kanji dam which is as useless as our independence.

Nigeria should not allow herself to be cowed by those tiny countries, Egypt warn countries sharing the Nile that anyone that tempers with the River has declared war against her. that's how a strong and patriotic country acts. those countries due to their threat have relatively stable power supply while we wallow in total darkness.

And where are your own facts? None.

If you are going to criticize and call other people names, common sense and basic prudence dictates that you clearly articulate solutions or state specifically what the government should have done to placate her neighbors and even the fact that you are a powerful neighbor doesb't mean you can dictate to them. They are doing you a favor, not the other way around and they are even paying billions for the same favor.

Are you even sure they did not try to appease them in other ways?

Simpleton is written all over you.

I think I have stated the Cotonou borders which actually makes up a significant chunk of Benin's economy is a way to go. I remember when Obasanjo closed that aspect of that border, the Nigerien President was in Abuja pleading his heart out.

I also stated the ECOWAS regional block is also an effective tool where Nigeria shoulders the running and servicing of this regional body.

I also stated Nigeria should invest in nuclear power generation as south Africa and Egypt have done.

If I may add here, what about the other 2 dams Nigeria still have? Kainji dam only supplies about 500 megawatts of electricity. This 40 year old dam is long over due for an upgrade with bigger and more powerful turbines!

And yes, bigger countries dictate to smaller countries every day. It is called diplomatic pressure in geopolitics.
