The Ak47 like the US Ar15 is useless same as all rifles against the highly agile light weight drone. Yet the AA12 gage automatic shotgun blows drones to pieces. If it's shooting out high powered heat without jamming it's a good rifle.

The AK-47 is totally outdated. Yes it is reliable, but it is basically an antique. Even the Russians no longer use the AK-47 but rather the AK-101 and AK-103 with later versions joining their arsenal. The Chinese also do not use their version of the AK-47 (Type 56 and 56-2). I recommend that the military phase out the AK-47 for the Polish Beryl Rifle presently being used by Army and NAF Special Forces, or even the GALIL ACE rifle used by DSS and even purchased by Nigerian Immigration Service.

No sir. The Tavor is not considered a battlefield weapon in these parts in that it spots 5.56mm ammunition which has an average bullet weight of 4 grams and powder for a maximum effective range of 250 metres. Traditionally we prefer 7.62mm ammo which has a 9 gram jacket and has more powder to propel it to an effective kill at 400 metres.

Every soldier I knew preferred to engage the enemy at a further distance and I can imagine if you are faced with a charging horde of militia men you want to start taking them down further out and especially out of PED range.

Two. I cannot expect any serious infantry to use a lower calibre that the adversity it is fighting.and the AK appears the standard weapon for militia the world over.

The 5.56mm ammo does have its advantage. It is lighter and so you can carry more and can be more effective for close combat.

Lastly. And most important to any soldier is reliability. There is currently no rifle in the world that can match the AK for reliability. Even the Americans with more sophisticated AR's, Colts and Bushmasters will tell you when their special forces get into battle, they inevitable complete difficult missions with the AK and our armed forces donot have the same maintemace and replacement capabilities of those nations.

The summary is: every mechamic, cook, cobbler, painter, sportsman or woman will most likely perform and succeed using the tools most familiar, reliable and comfortable dor them.

I had only a brief stinct with the AK in my time and we used to call it a toy back then due to its light weight and melodic sound in rapid fire. We grew using the German H&K G3, before the Belgian FN and then our government went completely East bloc.

In terms of personal infantry fire arms there is absolutely nothing wrong with our set up. What we need are the other elements that a fighting unit needs. Communication devices, battlefield analysis devices, command and control devices, updated heavy weaponry such as mortars, mines and HEAP artillery pieces and of course updated training. That's all.

One is a battle Rifle with long range (AK, Beryl, FAL, Galil) while the other is a close quarter rifle with short range( Tar 21)

The TAR-21 has roughly the same range as the AK-47.

The AK 47 is Russian rifles so the US can never issue it to it's soldiers but US soldiers have been known to drop their m16s and pick up dead enemies AK47 during battles because of the reliability

All this info and many more I expected NySC will afford corpers but.....

There's this shookonela guy who's been fighting and cursing like it's standard we all must be on point about ammo...I have learnt sometins from submissions of REFRENCE and TENNYRANKS...so rather than insult all, pls educate us and stop being a jackass....

But truth be told...I luv weapons...it will be unheard of that I won't own one soonest...

Even the US doesn't use the AR 15 , the AR 15 is not even an assault rifle but a semi automatic sport rifle which can not be compared to the AK47.... Believe AK47 is still pound for pound the best assault rifle

There is some misconception here and folks have to understand what the loose term 'sophistication' means. Modern, updated, technologically superior can hardly describe what the inventory these insurgents wield, at least from the ones caputured. I really cannot see any sophisticated weapons used in the Bornu theatre.

What I however obswrve is that they seem to come to battle with a better balance of weaponry carefully selected to defeat our military. If they counter your infantry with truck mounted, thus mobile heavy machine guns they will do damage to fixed infantry positions. If they bring rocket propelled grenade launchers and can man them tactically they can take out your APC's and light vehicles. If they bring those 88's with anti-aircraft rounds as long as the palm of my hand then even helicopter gunships will need some serious tactics to penetrate their envelope.

None of these weapons are unusual or exotic. They just seem to have a better balance of weaponry, and a different tactic driven by their warped philosophy. They donot come to fight, they come to die. It is difficult to contain such an adversary. But doubtlessly our military needs to step up, re-arm properly and adapt their tactics.

If they donot have the requisite equipment to hold the ground and dig in, I suggest they keep mobile to offer these bandits less of a static target to assault.

You should take note that the magazines are at the back making good use of the shorter than The Ak that as its magazine at the middle and not making full use of the long carbine

Thank you! Our soldiers more often than not engage in the open field meaning long range battles meaning AK is perfectly suited for it.

From my own perspective as someone that has zero knowledge about guns, the Op thinks because the dss guys Tar-21 are bigger and finer it is more sophisticated...... But from what I have gathered here I think AK wins the battle for me, coupled with the fact that it has a shot knife attached for necessities grin

AS 15 is not even an assault rifle and can't be used by any ARMY as standard issue, I hope you know the AR15 is a semi automatic and is even marketed and sold as a semi automatic sport rifle .. No comparison .. the AK 47 is still the best assault rifle pound for pound anywhere Sir ..take my words ..even the US ARMY standard issued M16 was inspired by the AK47 and the U.S. still use it as standard issue till date
