One of my course mates is the daughter of a prominent politician in the South Western Nigeria, maybe on your behalf I will ask her why her dad and his cohorts failed to develop Nigeria but send their kids abroad for education, better living standard and security. Before you question my patriotism, tell me the last time you made your voice heard in your local government about epileptic power supply, bad roads, jobs and inadequate infrastructures. You can crawl back into your hole till then but I apologise if I miss your point, your argument just doesn't seem to add up Delivar: |

Thank you so much thebosstrevor for starting this tread. As final a year student studying abroad who is contemplating between working overseas or coming back to Nigeria, I learned alot from people's comments. I think a lot of reaction from people miss the point the OP raises which is "ONLY MAKE IT ABROAD". Basically, I believe people can make it both in Nigeria and Overseas. However, any migrant needs to weigh their skills, competences, and savings accordingly before migrating, otherwise, the individual might end up taking meager jobs overseas that are less in value that what they had in Nigeria. On the other hand, the individuals who mentioned about the better quality of live overseas is definitely right. I have been to several countries in North America and Europe and can attest that the quality of life there is better than Nigeria. I dont want to start ranting about the many social problems in Nigeria but the fact that whenever you are in Nigeria and you fear for your security- from road accidents, armed robbery, kidnapping, religious crisis, police harrasement, Boko Haram, depending on where you live. These issues chase people away from Nigeria. And this could also be a reason why politicians send their kids and family away too. Big Picture: Opportunities exist in both in Nigeria and abroad but you must work hard to get it, be it abroad or in Nigeria For the individuals that complains about blaming the West for Nigeria's problem. Certainly, the West is definitely a major part of the problem that a lot of African Nation are facing, including corruption. The Nigerian politicians who embezzle Nigerian funds use the West as safe havens where they buy properties, send their kids and families, and for tax evasions. If the West is resolved to help African nation fight corruption, then, they might as well stop the money laundering coming into their economy. Just to be clear, anyone living and working abroad, legally, is paying income taxes. By this, we immigrants alongside citizens of those country generate tremendous amount of revenue and skills for their government. Their government use this resource to better their countries, support their industries, invest overseas, and subsidise some sector of their economy. This goes to show that as long as we keep migrating and investing overseas we keep contributing to building their economy for them. It's called putting yourself and your children to modern day slavery. |

thebosstrevor:Many oppressors of Nigeria had to brutalize and kill the people to make them achieve this level of civilization (wear cloth and go school), you think speaking with authority is bad? I can tell you that most black Africans (not just Nigerians) need dictatorships to become civilized. It has to be forced upon them, no other way...otherwise you wait for several centuries like slavery. |

Wow! what a read from this very funny thread. I notice that the OP of this thread has been all over the place. It is so obvious that the OP of the this thread just from his multiple post one could sense bitterness, anger, jealousy and frustrations even though it has some valid points. This argument can continue to go on and on till kingdom come it still will not change people's adamant minds of what they what to do about their lives or how they feel about the current very sad state of Nigeria. |

Delivar: from your post I can see that you don't have a full grasp of how the economy works. Do you know that the money to buy food and build houses help in stimulating the economy by extensive moving the economy forward more than the ones ( you rich folks and politicians ) are sending abroad?Do you know why during certain economic problem the economy policy is geared towards spending ? Sorry bro I really do not have the time to give you a lecture on basic economics. On a serious note this is my last reply to you on this issue maybe someday in the future you may have studied/read wide enough to understand my point. I am sure when that day comes you will thank me. ![]() |

thebosstrevor:Bros you are wrong. Remember that the policy was changed few years back and when you transfer money to Nigeria the banks give you the naira equivalent. Remember that there are Nigerian all over the world people sending from Asia, Europe, South America etc so for uniformity it is based on dollar equivalent. As per the money taken abroad my our politicians those money are invested in real estate, spend on traveling, hospital bills, children education they are not bringing it back home. |

naunasabi:I never said it doesn't help a bit. But it's insignificant. Can the money sent by Nigerians fix our power supply? Can it fix our bad roads? Can it stop corruption? Can it improve healthcare? |
| Re: Why Do Nigerians Think That They Can Only Make It Abroad? by naunasabi: 6:59pm On Dec 10, 2018 |
Delivar:I know I said I won't respond to you anymore but on a second thought that is not a nice thing to say to someone that is clearly out to have a conversation. So I take that back. To your question yes the money can be invest in capital project and can be used in fixing our power sector ( that is if the politicians don't steal it ). FGN has raised 300 million dollars from diaspora bond https://qz.com/africa/1014533/nigeria-has-raised-300-million-from-its-first-ever-diaspora-bond/ If those monies are well utilized more people will invest in it and we as nation might not need to go looking for aid to finance our developmental activities. |

thebosstrevor:If US is the basis of your argument, then use Canada as an example. Why are Nigerians striving to leave Nigeria for Canada? It's because of the standard of living. I personally wouldn't advice any human to move to US but if you're a Nigerian, then US is a better option. Get my point, US is terrible but Nigeria is just hellfire. I have an uncle who has businesses in Nigeria. He knows Nigeria has an economically viable market but he prefers to live abroad. Be realistic, you can't compare the standard of living US to Nigeria. |

thebosstrevor:Yes, I believe we can build our nation. Nigerians are happy people. Infact, the basic Nigerian doesn't ask for much from life. Just good environment for his business or at his workplace and peace of mind but as I speak to you, the current state of the nation can only fend for some 6%, the rest are on survival mode. That's why you'd hear a man working in a top notch bank in Nigeria say "I'd love to wash toilets and pack white men shiits in Australia" with a smile on his face as long as he'd get paid and have peace of mind. Passionate statements like that has even reduced due to the new nation spread virus of internet fraud. |

toboy: Its not modern day slavery because you and your kids are benefiting from the system, you enjoy the social amenities, security, good education and health care. You are basically using what you paid for which is not the same in Nigeria. If you don't migrate to those countries they will still fund those sectors with your contribution. |

justwise:It is very obvious toboy didn't know the meaning of that word "modern day slavery" To not go far with giving out countless examples of it happening presently in Nigeria...is ASUU still on strike? Yes, that's a typical example of "modern day slavery." |
