Except you're medium to long-term, it can be quite risky.

After offloading your 50m units at an average of 1.15, someone else out of fear joins you to take it further down to 1.12,
then you find that people become excessively fearful, and the highest bid for the next few weeks is 20,000 units at 1.04.

By the time you realize it, you're down 30%.
15million gone to NSE experiment. What's WORSE is you'd be beefing the market, and thus miss opportunities that it presents during those your trying times. The WORST is, by the time it eventually pays off, there may be others that'll be faster than you at selling, so you would have only worked for them to benefit.

By the time you eventually decide to cut your losses and sell on Monday, the company releases its results for the quarter on Friday, and earnings are down.

You enter market on Monday morning to see 200m units of offers at 0.92, your laptop is gone that day, so is any assistant who tries to greet you 'Good morning'. And any relative that calls that day from your village......
Even your kids may start wondering 'what's wrong with Daddy' when you start screaming excessively. Your son says "Dad your food is ready" and your very first response is a scream of "Didn't you hear I said I'm coming?"

Experiments like this are best performed by fund managers, cos first, they'd probably be using 100m out of their 100bn pension asset allocated to equities. Second, the losses don't get to them personally. Third, they can afford to be very patient.

I wonder how much you would have gained if things had panned out fine, so it'd be fine to make sure, the potential gains are really worth all the troubles.
on this road FEAR kills faster than the BULLET.

When you know when to buy/sell a volatile stock, you will smile but if you don't know, one won't smile.

My advice on Transcorp, set a Target buying/exiting prices and don't listen to anything once you reach your target.Dont say let's wait till tomorrow or next.30-40% is good for such stocks.

For,2019,I am keeping zenith and be adding Transcorp in tranches whether it goes up or down. The results are improving significantly.I wonder why they paid a smaller amt as dividend.

Now I understand there is a plan to acquire an asset and they have to make use of the available cash with them. The stock will witness patronage this year.If the 2019 Q1 result improve better than the 2018,the volatility of this stock will come to an end as people will be hustling to have/increase their stakes in the company.

Transcorp faces a brighter future now.Currentprice has already announced that Loco stock will surprise the market this year.

Bro,you traded Transcorp in the days when no one see it as a good stock.Haters of Transcorp have come to like it now.You can begin to buy it again in tranches anticipating a good result next month. After the result the price of the stock will soar and continue soaring until it becomes the stock of the year.

Are there still good results among yet to release results?

Except fidelity and fcmb.........any other one remain is a trap.

One need to cherry pick stocks that has the best results so far.stocks like ucap, Afriprud, Transcorp, zenith,Gtb,stanbic,Uba,Dangote cem.The prices of these stocks as at today will be the lowest one can see them in the next 60 days and above.

Fcmb and Fidelity also worth picking but may remain static if dividend is not juicy.

Happy weekend pals

You have spoken well sir, these are classic picks if gotten at the right price. Buying on a scale - down (close to 52wk low) and selling on a scale - up sometimes does the trick.

I didn't trade Transcorp o.

I was only referring to Swilo's strategy of flooding the market with a stock so you can buy it lower.

The post was not about Transcorp, it's about that buying strategy he mentioned.

swilo:

When it is time for the real transcorpians to buy, they simply overload the market with offers. Interestingly, one man can do this alone.

It traded less than 23,000 units in the whole of last week. And this week, it traded less than 43,000

So you may want to classify it as illiquid-at least for now.

One thing you may try-if you have access to online trading is put it up for sale as early as 9:30:01 am everyday and if by 2:20pm, it's not filled, remove the price limit(offer it at market price). Try this for a week and you should have exited more than half your holdings.

The tax credit is a one-off now. We have to discount that. And I think the large pay-out ratio is perhaps cos Alhaji needs some cash to fund projects.

People are aware these 100% PAT growth and over 80% dividend pay-out are not things sustainable.

Without the tax credit in FY 19, and with the pioneer status expiring on some of the Obajana Lines, 2019 PE is gonna drop by close to 40% from 2018.
Price hikes aren't likely because should there be any significant hikes, folks may again start smuggling in cement.

Volume growth across the group (I mean the pan African operations) may only contribute minimally to EPS growth.

So, in all some of us still think it's over priced.

Alhaji has secured more tax credit with Executive order 7 to build roads which will be handled by his construction arm and the Chinese(CCECC), He has also applied for pioneer Status extension at the relevant agencies and is close to approval as ate the time of filing the annual report........The issue of smuggling cement is a NO NO as the price per 50kg bag of cement is #2500, a big disincentives for Firewall guys when a bag of rice goes for #12,000......The international price of cement is approximately #1000 from countries with excellent infrastructure, Cement is one of the most useless goods to transport by road as it is extremely expensive,Rail would have been better but this is Nigeria.......Good Economist just laugh at the country and its policy formulators, The chest beat that they have built roads , but most Roads in the country are designed for cars weighing 1ton and a maximum of 10 ton trucks, but we allow Cement Trucks and Tanker weighing over 60tons to ply the roads and people wonder why roads dont last more than 4years.........

Alhaji is the King of Cement in Nigeria, The Government of the day will just play into his hands

Great insight sir.

Now I think the tax credit that comes from building roads is quite different from the ones he's been enjoying from the pioneer status.

In the case of the road construction, you build a road for say 12bn, the government says, "hey we knock off 12bn from your tax obligations" Now you still have to bear some costs building that road. The net profit may eventually be 2bn, and your own share of it may just be 1bn-seeing that you involved a separate construction company.

so that's 1bn.

In the case of pioneer status, you have about 30mtpa capacity across four production lines, and you only need to produce 18mtpa to meet available demands.

Now 2 of your lines are old, and have lost their pioneer status, but the two remaining ones are relatively new and still qualify. So you just produce about 15mtpa from the two lines, while you produce the remaining 3mtpa from the old lines.

The result is you have about 30% of say 240bn that is due as tax. But you never pay a dime. 80bn in free tax money

Now compare 1bn to 80bn, and the difference is quite clear.

I wasn't here when the DANGCEM's results were analysed, but I hope it was noticed that the major cause of the profit spike was tax credit. I also hope that it was noticed that this tax credit isn't from the road construction, rather the report says, THEY APPLIED FOR PIONEER STATUS ON SOME OF THEIR PRODUCTION LINES, BUT WHILE THEY WERE YET TO GET THE APPROVAL, THEY HAD BEEN MAKING PROVISIONS FOR THE TAX OBLIGATIONS FROM PREVIOUS YEARS' EARNINGS so late last year, they got the approval and decided to write back those provisions, so in effect part of the earnings declared in FY 2018 were made in 2017, 2016 and I guess 2015."

Getting the details of those numbers is not even hard at all now. They all have notes added to them.

Tax credit 85bn (32)

that number in the bracket is the note that explains how that amount came about.

so by just scrolling through the long notes to note 32 the details are seen.

All this merger merger, will make one have many account with one bank. I opened two account with defunct intercontinental bank, one IPSA and the other account saves, Access acquired them and turn the two account into saves, I have account with Diamond bank, now merged with access bank, making it three account in one bank.
By the time they will merge with UBA, First bank, Sterling, Polaris and acquire by Zenith bank, the account will increase by Eight. For now it's inconclusive account. grin
