We hear this all the time. Who developed the business culture?

Have you ever heard about Japanese or Chinese business culture practiced and taught to English and American business men?

Human being develop culture but they don't impose or force it on the throat of people like you implied. You stick your culture while i stick to mine but when is business you shift ground.

It is good to respect elders no doubt but elders should use their brain in public. If Prof had pleaded with the young man to allow him have the seat, I don't think this would have generated to this level. Even in motor parks I see many old men and women begging for front seat it doesn't make them stupid rather it is the right thing to do.Do you know that my uncle still washes his plate after eating? Even when I insist I do that he bluntly refuse. Now tell me if I would let him leave the chair after eating knowing fully well what he will do. Respect is earned

The man has not done anything wrong as far as am concerned. Some old people can be very stubborn.... The young man demanded for his right...After all, was Wole Soyinka not the head of the group called PIRATES back in his days? Did he not start it? What was the objective of that association? To curb and kick against injustice and bullying of students by the school authorities then..So why did he intend to bully the young man now that he is old... By usurping the man's seat knowing fully well that was not his seat...Abeg Abeg.. The young man no send Wole Soyinka.

It is a good thing that Wole Soyinka was smart enough to understand that right is right and wrong is wrong. Also, it was a good thing the air hostesses understood the right of the guy and allowed him to stay in his seat. Also, this is an airplane, if it were a bus or danfo, one overzealous mumu might even slap the young man for "disrespecting Soyinka" forgetting the fact that the guy is absolutely right and Soyinka is wrong. When i was in the University long ago, I am over 6ft tall and prefer the front seat. I got to the park and took the front seat of a station wagon even though another one was already loading and almost full, but i wanted front seat. Now when the car was almost full, a retired whatever officer came and bounced me to the back. I refused and everybody insulted me including the driver. It was only one man that came to my aid and begged me to just accept the seat because i demanded my money back. Everybody was insulting me that i lacked home training etc. Now, the old man had a choice to get front seat on the next car, he had no right bouncing me, but he did. I was seriously uncomfortable and inconvenienced all through the journey from Okene to Abuja. In this case, i would've allowed Wole Soyinka to have my seat out of respect, however, if i am in an exit row seat cos of my long legs and i am asked to move to another seat that will make me uncomfortable, for 1 hr no wahala i will take it, but for a 6 hour flight i will refuse, period.

It is not about upbringing soyinka was wrong.
Thumbs up to the boy he did the right thing. You don't claim what is not yours the guy paid for the flight and has as much rights as mr soyinka to seat in his rightful place.
People should stop disrespecting people in the name of being an elder respect is earned not demanded neither is it a right.

You misunderstood me, my Queen.

I have not passed judgment on who is right or wrong in this case. I only reacted to the post that accused people of asslicking.

I don't see how it is asslicking. I remembered my time in Lagos. How I used to stand up to let an elderly person have my seat. In Lagos of those days, you will see elderly people standing and holding on to overhead rails while young people sit with headphones to their ears. I always gave my seat out to these people. Is that asslicking? I do the same for handicapped people and pregnant women. Would that pass as asslicking?

With the way things are going, it would soon be asslicking to do things that we once held dearly as Africans.

Nobody should ever take up a seat on a plane that you did not pay for - then try to emotionally blackmail people with your status and age. The only person that did anything wrong is Soyinka. And the Tonye Cole idiiot who has sought to drag the poor nigga involved through the gutter for minding his own business.
Naija people and their hollow virtue signaling, placing great emphasis on values without substance.

I have no problem with you since the story of your uncle said it all. I just wonder where he got that from and passed it not only to you but his children.

But the the President of USA was cultured enough to give up his Bed on Air Force One and slept on the floor so that an elder former President could rest his old bone.

There is an Igbo proverb that says even when respect is accorded to the elderly, reference is given to achievements.

We have a 85 year old, whether or not he achieved anything, has become a subject of dispute over a seat. Are these Africans children?

Truth is the Lad lacks good manners, there's no nice approach to asking an elder to leave a seat, we are Africans not Americans, respect is part of our culture and it's even written that 'give honor to whom it is due'..

Why must elder seat on his seat. elder should have book the seat and if he cant get, he books on another flight. if it was the young man that sat on his seat, am sure heaven must fall. nigerians are sentimental on irrelevant issue. if the boy paid for the seat, then he deserves his seat or would Wole Soyinka refund his money, then we know elder got this

All of these bunch of hypocrites doing eye service asslicking becos he's a public figure. I'm sure U all politely allow an elderly person to take ur spot in a bank queue becos U are Africans and respect elders

If I see an elderly person trying to get ahead of me at an ATM queue I won't challenge them. It's happened severally. Yes, I have the right to insist on going first, but then again...it would take absolutely nothing from me to allow that elderly person go before me. And then I would imagine if that person was my parent...

But the queue scenario is even milder. Do you know what it's like to ask an elder to get up and leave a seat so you can sit there. Man, that's really awkward! And you'll stand by the side watching them rise up for you to seat.
This life is not like that. Some things aren't such a big deal, so why not let go?
And y'all asking if he didn't know the correct seat. Yes, it's possible he didn't realise initially that it wasn't his allocated seat.

But the young man could have also used the opportunity to rub mind with the great man. If na me sha, I will ask for my seat since I like sitting at that spot. but when I see say him like the place sha..... me I for smile and say.... For you sir. Life sometimes brings opportunity to gain wisdom our way but we use ego to push it away. Na dem kukuma sabi!

Prof if you reading this know that I will leave my window seat for you no qualms.
Re: Young Man To Wole Soyinka: Leave My Seat - Tonye Cole, Mo Abudu, Kate Henshaw by Maximize52: 7:22pm On Jun 24, 2019
That is just an example of the erosion of values in our society. The young man wouldn't have known Prof. Woke Soyinka and didn't know he was standing face to face with a living legend. However, how do you blame him? The educational system is so disjointed that it is possible he has never heard that name before. He may not even know what Nobel prize is and what it takes to be a Nobel laureate. Don't be surprised many graduates parading in this country will fall into that same category. So such despicable character despite all efforts to placate him does not surprise me. Most Nigerians are crude in their behaviour. And this stems from the wrong form of education and societal standards we have set for ourselves. Make the money, who will ask you how? After making it you can oppress and bully as many that come your way. That is the mentality of an average Nigerian. But the paradigm has to shift. If not we make no progress.

The man didn't disrespect Soyinka he was only fighting for his right, the seat was assigned to him and it's normal for soyinka to seat elsewhere, if it was me I would have let Soyinka have the seat but not everyone is the same, he had a choice and he chose what's best for himself.

Thank you

You don't have a choice. You have to buy the African value. grin

On our wedding day, you will have to kneel to feed me, at least.

You will call me "Olowo ori mi" which translates loosely to "The owner of the money on my head". And when I am angry, you will have to pacify me with a good meal. Yorubas have a saying "Olobe lo loko". This translates loosely as "The cook owns the husband".

Of course, I will love you, expectedly. grin cheesy

The comments on front page and second page says a lot about the value system of those resident on this forum. So, let's turn the tables. If you pay for a seat and it's your right to be on the seat allocated to you, then your dad switched seats with you, would you ask him to leave simply 'cause you paid for it? And they're here talking about 'rights'. Disrespectful generation!

Flights seats are number. Prof. Soyinka should have requested for a seat by the window when booking the flight. The young man just insisted on his fundamental rights but i think he should have reasoned with those who pleaded with him and let the old man be.
