I was like u at 26yrs after my youth service...It wasn't funny,Urs are nice coz my own parents branded me a Lazy man...I would go downstairs to check whats cooking just sighting me in the kitchen my mum would ask if i kept anything in the ppot?My Dad would quarrel with me for bringing friends around...it went on and on for good 2yrs,at some point i would sleep at friends or relatives.Just to have that peace of mind...Couldn't even bring some male friends to the house talk less of babe.

So house owners sold their houses? So what advise are we really giving our friend here? When people begin selling their assets such as houses, it means that the situation is beyond remedy. Is it not the same house that you said others are selling due to hardship that we're now asking op to build? Sir, is a house really an investment? The key to financial success is not by living with one's parents till old age in order to save. The key is to establish multiple streams of income. That's the key to financial success and that's the advice we should give OP.

If you think you've enough to get a place and sustain yourself and your other needs/expenses, move out. If not, stay where you are and save a bit more before you move out. Do start a side hustle or business to generate more income.

a house is not an investment,and money spent on d building cannot b gotten back in his life time,highest at old age,,,,,there are businesses u will do in nig ,if u understand dat biz,u can get what a landlord collects as rent in a year within a week,,,,,,the purpose of a house is for inheritance not profit

Let me give u good advice,
You will move out okay. But take a hold first.
Draw up a little 5 year plan.
That means an estimate of what u want to have and where u want to be in 5 years.( For a start , u can not really determine where u want to be but u have a little resource ( ur salary) to help u determine what u want to have which will in turn help u to get to where u want to be.
So sit down and put something hard to get but possible to achieve.
Include ur marriage plan too like midway into the plan.
If u draw that plan sir, I give u 100% assurance that u will know that 400k can't get u what u want.
The plan will give u direction on the earliest u can leave your parents house.
Infact u will tighten ur belt and save more.
By the time u can save 60% of ur salary,
The brain to do business will come ( this one u are saying u are not cut out for business-no be business somebody put for ground wey carry u dey chop 80k monthly.).
Not that u will go do business hung-ho.
U will invest in a -risk free business (e.g fixed deposit, treasury bill, comm papers) and then take a little portion to try something u think u can do.(the risk-free providing u a kind of security to fall back on.
U will surely fail in business if u are going to succeed later, it now depend on how u view that failure,
If u run from it, u will meet if later again especially u mentioned ur current job has no "security".
If it means eating 100 naira food per meal in order to be eating 1,000 naira food in 3 years time, it is very worthwhile.
Me I never regretted it.

Bro please use 300k rent and furnish your apartment first you won't finish everything at once, you have alot to gain.
1. You can carry babes at will.
2. You will have time to read and learn new things.
3. You will have the mind to try out any small business without people or your parents feeling uncomfortable with it, or telling you can't make it.
4. You will go broke sometimes and learn to save better the next month.
5. You will earn respect automatically from colleagues and family...... And babes lol.
6. You will have time to embark on self discovery quests.

I've managed to save up to 400k so far, I've always longed to move away from my parent's house and get my own place, but they'd always kick against it, citing that there's no need for that since work is close to home. Left for them, they'd like me to stay till I plan for marriage whenever that will be; Lol, parents sha.

I'm already 28 years old, so I think it's time.

My colleagues already yab me anytime they get the opportunity, they love reminding me that I still dey chop mama thank you.

Problem is, the job security at my place of work is not that encouraging. I have older colleagues who have been in the company for 8 to 15 years, I've also, within my short period (less than a year now) seen about 5 workers sacked, it's a place where any thing can happen at any time.

So, should I invest this 400k in renting and furnishing an apartment with the constant uncertainty hovering over the job,and no side income yet, or should I continue staying with my parents while I invest the money in a side business which I don't know how it'll fare...

Now, frankly speaking, I'm not cut out for business, it's not my forte at all, so starting any at all comes with great risk but I still feel the need for another source of income.

On the flip side, Staying with my parents is not even as economical as most would think. Ever since I got the job, parents no dey gree say them get money again. All the bills are on me.

I'm just confused.

Ok that's good, at least you earn over 700k in a year, the normal rule is that your rent should not be more than one-fourth of your salary in a year, it depends on how you spend money on things, it is better than if you calculate your expenses monthly, you calculate how much you spend on food stuff, calculate what you spend on clothes, calculate how much you give out to people sometimes, calculate the cost of maintaining the apartment you plan on getting(nepa bills, security bills etc) subtract it from your salary, if the remaining money is not up to 5k monthly, then don't even think of trying to move out of your parents house because that is not progress but waste of time. I suggest you still stay in your parents house till at least a year more, you just started working and you need to be balanced before getting your own apartment, I know you want your space as a man but just have patience.

Best advice anyone can get i hope u take this @Hullabaloon.

depends on the state he resides ,there are some states u could still get a good one bedroom flat for 80k,chair 120k not complete set small TV for a start, then fridge,second hand them foam,he can get these with 400k and start buying d rest little my little .no apartment has it all ,

The (your)hunger was there, the determination there, the will there, so u will leave.

I observe that 90% of people that usually advice people to hastily run out of the parents house are people from broken homes, polygamous family, barrack-like family (6-10) children in small apartment.

Children from united family, 2-3 children will hardly run out of their parent's house hastily.

If I happen to work in the town my parent reside I'll live with my parent and save to build my own house because:

I love my parents and wouldn't want to stay far away from them if I have the opportunity.

I have my own room for my privacy.

I have a friend who lived with his parent in a two bedroom apartment, saved money to purchase a land and build a 4 bedroom flat apartment in town.

Stay with your parents as long as it takes to be successful. Have you considered other hidden costs of rental? Furnishings, electricity, food, etc. Once you sign the lease, consider the little money you saved gone.
