Invest first, give your self an expiry date to leave your parents house and let that motivate you to grow your biz.

Left my parents before 20 and I haven't done badly myself since.

The secret is quite simple: I don't drink, I don't smoke, ain't got no girlfriend. Don't need one now.

So, the only expenses I make are feeding, T fare, and helping parents with cash when food stuff and other utilities run low at home.

I would have even saved more if not that I provided half of the rent where we currently stay, bought a new laptop and a new phone when I lost the previous one I had, and of course, upgraded my wardrobe cheesy
my man,
Go and look for N200-300k land and buy this month...
That will make the "money" disappear and stop making you feel "rich enough to go on your own"

Next, continue saving for blocks to Build a 2 bedroom bungalow on the land by next year.

Then you can move into the house and never pay rent again.

400K is too small. I have tried it and FAILED.

If you want me to narrate the full story from 2015 - 2018, I will.

DO NOT DO IT.

GO To the thread below and learn a safe investment with govt insurance That is "IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO BUY LAND NOW"

Lol, trust me, I'm not gonna listen to any business proposition from anyone here.
Get a nice apartment rented close to an higher institution and furnish it with bunks and bed with a central kitchen. Rent this apartment out to students. You'll be making more than half the money you injected in the first year and more subsequently. Good luck

Guys I need advice on what to do at this point in my life.

Got a job, in my state, place of work not far from parent's house (rented flat).

I've managed to save up to 400k so far, I've always longed to move away from my parent's house and get my own place, but they'd always kick against it, citing that there's no need for that since work is close to home. Left for them, they'd like me to stay till I plan for marriage whenever that will be; Lol, parents sha.

I'm already 28 years old, so I think it's time.

My colleagues already yab me anytime they get the opportunity, they love reminding me that I still dey chop mama thank you.

Problem is, the job security at my place of work is not that encouraging. I have older colleagues who have been in the company for 8 to 15 years, I've also, within my short period (less than a year now) seen about 5 workers sacked, it's a place where any thing can happen at any time.

So, should I invest this 400k in renting and furnishing an apartment with the constant uncertainty hovering over the job,and no side income yet, or should I continue staying with my parents while I invest the money in a side business which I don't know how it'll fare...

Now, frankly speaking, I'm not cut out for business, it's not my forte at all, so starting any at all comes with great risk but I still feel the need for another source of income.

On the flip side, Staying with my parents is not even as economical as most would think. Ever since I got the job, parents no dey gree say them get money again. All the bills are on me.

I'm just confused.

Salary fluctuates between 60 to 80k

I will advise you to stay with your parents and start a profitable business to generate a side income, also you can even build the business to become your full time income. Good luck nigga

Bbbwings:

I don't think you've lived alone earning 60k salary...
I did for a year.
And the savings I had went to the next year's rent, with the remainder just 60k
Yearly income 60000×12=720000
(Next years rent a self con= 120000
Money sent to my sibling monthly 8000×12= 96000
Total = 216000)
Amount remaining= 720000- 216000=504000
Savings = 60000.
So the amount I spent in a whole year was
504000- 60000
=444000.

That means I was spending only 444000/12 a month
37000.

My brother my body hear am.
I was effectively bankrupt the next year.

Lol, that's the spirit, why don't you tell us how you improved after that?

I was once in your shoes 3 yrs ago, earning 55k and living with my aunt in Abuja, I was 27yrs.
I had only saved 180k. It was a tough decision but I moved out, rented an apartment of 150k and bought fan and mattress. That was all I had. Today, well, I still don't have most things but I have a few more things.

My advice, move out. There is never a perfect time, you are 28yrs, you need privacy to start thinking like a real man. You need to start getting used to paying Bills and managing your finances. Its difficult to gather basic things if you are still living with parents, you would constantly feel no need for it.

From your write up, you are trying to play it safe and scared of the unknown like getting sacked. So would it be nice if you are still in your parents house and get sacked? That would only make you more dependent.

If you are on your own and God forbid get sacked, you would hustle more because you wouldn't like to go back to your parents house. And even if you have to go back, what's the big deal, your parents can't reject you. You should be thinking of leaving so you can develop your self and be positioned for a better job not fear of being sacked. No sensible management would lay off a productive staff, except they are shutting down.

Leave and be a man, live is full of uncertainties, how we handle them or how we let them define us makes us real men. Cheers

It's natural and scriptural to want to set out of your parents house, (Matthew 19:5
... For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh) but there's a time frame, and that has been stated by the scripture above.

Why not stay and put yourself together properly before you set out.

Op, don't move out until you save up to 1.5-2million naira.
Make it your goal for now, and you will be amaze at how soon you will raise it.

Invest the 2million in Teasury bills (with any bank of your choice)
You will be getting at least 100k interest yearly. You will then use the yearly interest for rent while your capital remains untouched.

Contrary to popular opinion here, it is actually time for you to move away from your parents house. The reasons are as follows:

1.If you continue living with your parents, you may not know that you need to buy your own, plates, spoons ,pots etc.

2. You may not have a good financial planning because you live with your parents, free rent and free food(you may not actually get this
point)

3.Staying with your parents at that age can make you slow down your hustle.

4. You seemed afraid to face the challenges out there.

The Choice is all yours.

Save up to 1m and buy a low cost land since you are not good in doing business. When it appreciates a little, sell and buy two more .Stay there sef till you wan marry. Be focus, you are not far from being successful

Secrete is self discipline & been frugal just like me..

As a corper who will be passing out on the 27th of this month, I have been able to save over 180k, add that to this month's final allawee & it will be over 200k.. Mind u, I have already bought a laptop(70k) to replaced my stolen one, occasionally send money to mama & even lent a friend 40k..

I serve in govt school with no stipend, but state allawee is 5k, I don't drink, i don't womanize , I don't v a gf coz that's not my priority now

Hullabaloon. Please Ignore all those saying you have to move out to know what it feels like to be a man by paying bills and other nonsense. The kind of job you have right now is not secure enough to support that kind of lifestyle. But to be honest, you do need a side hustle. Salary earning is not enough to sustain anyone these days. You don't even need to engage actively in a business. Make investments. Since you have a knack for saving, save for at least one more year and then really consider buying shares or bonds(Treasury bills) or even low cost land.

Lemme give you a story about myself .. When I graduated, I went back home and I go a little job and living in my parents house . My dad owns the compound
And we gat 4 flats with tenants. I stayed with them for almost a year and one day, I decided to rent an apartment and I never told them before I did. On breaking the news to them, they were surprised and mad at me especially my mom saying am too young to live alone and she’s sure I’ve been influenced by my girlfriend . My dad wasn’t happy for he said he would have vacated a tenant and I move in . My siblings were not happy with me also thinking my girl influenced me . There was this Bros who have graduated long before I did which I told before I actually paid for the apartment . This bros discouraged me from getting my apartment by using himself as an example that he owns a business he’s managing and living with his family..
To cut the story short, I Moved out of my fathers 5 bedroom flat to a bed sitter apartment in another Town. Less than year, I moved into 2 bedroom apartment and am doing well. My younger brother eventually left the house and stayed with me for months and now, he’s living in a Self contain apartment and Guess what, the Bro’s who advices me to stay back and run a business , he’s still living with his parents and his business have closed down.

My point is the moment you start living alone, your sense of reasoning will change automatically and my brother if you don’t work, you won’t it. That was what made me what I am now and my mother loves visiting me every weekend now .

You had a steady and reliable source of income.

You may not compare yourself to the OP. Nigeria is too terrible at the moment to take some certain risks. (I'm not saying one shouldn't take risk, but be careful).

Work financial background when you moved out mayn't be the same with him.

Besides he has the fear of losing his job anytime. This is Nigeria

Some of you guys put so much pressure on yourselves to be men...

Take it easy.

You should move out, but don't be erratic about it.

I don't think you must live away from he to know how to manage funds. I have tasted both sides and I know there are so many home expenses you can't ignore. Expenses that may never arise when you are on your own.

Stay with them a little longer, save more and see how you can get another source of income. Even if it means investing in someone and collecting some "dividend".

Since you're dicipline to have saved up to 400k out of the salary range of 60-80k . You can survive anywhere

Base on your testament , you can take care of a family and your parents. Therefore, I advise you to move out of your family house to learn how to live alone, that would help you handle more challanges

I am 31 Years old , I left my family house when I was 20yrs but still leaving in another house of ours but alone. I am into media productions, from the small incomes , I was contributing to my family and paying my studio and School fees of more than 100k

I was lucky after my graduation, I served in Rivers . Do you know that I did touch my allowee because I was getting more than allowee in my PPA

After my service , though I am from Jos, I secure a job of 50k but allowances that fluctuates between 100- 250k in Port Harcourt .

Within one year I bought 5 plots of land in Jos and still contributing to my family

Currently , i am studying Masters programme in Uyo and still paying my bills which include house rent of 200k in PH

I am 31 yrs now , after my masters next yrs I should plan of getting married

Your qualities of not; drinking, smoking and womanizing, I exhibited those characters that afforded me this achievement so-far

I advise you to look for accommodation of about 100-120k that you have put in mind , it will help you to tackle more challanges than remaining under the wings of your parents which they have been solving some unseen challenges that you're yet to understand

You're lucky to have a Job and be dicipline , take a step though is not easy and move out , you will be greater if maintain the padestrain you have set

Your moving out should not be about being mocked by friends or colleagues but striving to be independent and prepare for your new home
