CAN PEOPLE WITH BRAIN DAMAGE OUTPERFORM IN INVESTING?

https://adamfayed.com/can-people-with-brain-damage-outperform-in-investing/

It seems ridiculous, but is it really possible for somebody with brain damage, which affects the decision making parts of our brain, to beat the average investor and many professionals?

A team of academics started a simple game. Starting off with $30, you would risk $1 on a coin flip (or pass and risk no loss) if the coin came up as tails. If the coin came up as heads, you won $2.50.

So a 50/50 chance of gaining $2.50, and a 50/50 chance of losing $1. The game lasted for twenty rounds.

People with ‘normal’ brain functioning were reluctant to bet, even though the chances of winning were much greater than 50%, due to the extra $1.50 on offer for winning.

Or put another way, if you won on 10 rounds ($25 gained), and lost on 10 rounds ($10 lost), you would be up by $15. Even if you lost on 12-13 rounds, you would still be up. So the rational decision would be to bet on every round.

What is interesting, is that they were most likely to stop flipping the coin after experiencing a loss in the last round – ‘once bitten twice shy’. The pain of losing $1 discouraged these people from trying to win $2.50.

In comparison, the people with brain damage that included damaged emotional circuits bet on around 85% of rounds, even when they had previously lost $1 in the previous round.

The result? The people with brain damage outperformed by 13%-15%! In investing, many professional investors lose money, relative to the market, because of the fear of losses as well.

That doesn’t mean we should all hit ourselves over the head with a sledgehammer to get better investment results.

But it merely shows that the fear of losses is lurking in our brains, and overcoming this fear can increase your returns more than simply having great investment knowledge.

Thanks for sharing this.
When limited brain circuitry implies less doubtful rationalisations, and reduced natural dread factor. A scary tradeoff for almost any normal mind despite the apparent promise.

Insightful nonetheless on the workings of probability.

The return on investment is what really matters. That return must be able to cover your 2-3 times your expenses on a monthly basis.

Why was your monthly expense not just used but 2-3 times of it used instead? I believe that a factor of safety had been included by either doubling or tripling the expenses. Your expenses may not have factored in medical cost(as you age, you see doctor often), repairs or replacement of vehicles over time, renovation of house and other unforeseen expenses.

So when you can comfortably plan and offset all these over time, then you are financially free.

In summary, the return on investment divided by 2 to 3 times your monthly expenses should give you 1 or above 1. Anything below 1 could leave you struggling after early retirement or normal retirement.

I believe you meant, your monthly ROI divided by 2-3 times your monthly expenses right?

Yes. Monthly ROI.

How do you get your monthly ROI?

People get dividends yearly or bi-annually. So the cumulative dividends divided by 12 will give you the monthly ROI. That monthly dividends needs to be equal or greater than 2 to 3 times your monthly expenses.

Once you achieve this, you are financially free.

Omo mehn, my journey to financial freedom still far ooo, really need to buckle up. So u mean i need monthly ROI of 4.32M which equates to 51.84M ROI p.a. I think this formula is unfair. It should be 1.5 x Monthly expenses for you to be declared financially free and once your ROI equals your monthly expenses, then you are financially independednt. Anyway, thanks boss for your input.

Did you use 2 times your monthly expense?

Which kind expense you get that you will do 2.16m monthly(if you used 2 x monthly expenses)?

In financial freedom, you need to lower your expenses as fast as possible and increase ROI.

If you are living abroad, the single expense line is accommodation which could cost upwards of $1,500 per month. Abi you dey pay alimony ni grin

https://thenationonlineng.net/banks-freeze-interests-on-n800b-oil-marketers-loans/

There's really no big deal about the CBN directive to effect a 60% LDR by Q3.
Like I said in the past, the banking sector is already well positioned to ride out any expected impact from this.
It might interest u to know that the sector's combined LDR proir to H1 2019(may to be precise) already stands @ over 58%. ...which is just a less 2% shortfall from the 60% CBN guideline.
So in retrospect, the banks only need to meet that meagre % to balance things up.
Individually, just few banks needs to do a bit of increase in this line.

Banks are smart !! ...the core of them saw this coming(giving a possible reducing rate environment and imbalances between the fiscal and real side of the economy) and quickly had to rework their earnings pattern by aligning more to their loan drive than investment drive... seeing that the days of huge trading gains from non-core banking was slowing down.
That's why we already have most banks that have exceeded the said minimum. ...with LDR for the core of them printing well above 70% as @ Q2. The efficient banks are always shrewd enough to know how and when to take advantage of arbitrage opportunities resulting from imbalances in the system.
It is also not for nothing that the combined sector loan portfolio against investment has risen up within last 3 quarters more than it did in the last 2 calender yrs.

As for the 800B loan u mentioned, it's not new. The directive was given months ago. Its a win-win situation for the banks and the oil marketers.
But for that directive from the CBN, the core of those loans would have gone bad. ...aiding a higher NPL and lower AsQ for the banks, while the oil majors would've been forced to either refinance or refuse further transactions with lifting of oil. In fact, it would've had a negative impact on the economy.
But for anything, the oil marketers can now broker to repay the loans without having them go bad.
The affected banks must have already considered the said interest write-off in their books.(Q1 gave a clue)

Bottom line: There is really no cause for alarm.
Just ensure u align with the fundamentally healthy ones that are underpriced with a good margin of safety.
Whatever happens u are sure to gain from either dividend growth or cap appreciation. ...one of them must surely come to pass, if not both !!

Another thing really is that beyond 60, how much money does one really need?
It brings to the fore some people's argument that they would rather enjoy their money while it is useful to them while they are still young
What is Warren Buffet doing with all the billions net-worth at 88 years old?

For me, I am inclined to stay in the middle; I enjoy myself as much as I can while also keeping an eye on improving my finances.

According to Buharieconomics when ministerial appointment is delayed it will help save cost. During BUBU first tenure he saved Nigeria the cost of 5months salary for his ministers. Isn't that great

This time around is not even up to 2mths and some are already complaining.

Nothing stops you from enjoying the return on your investment. ROI na still money.

The source of that fund may not be there forever, and that is why you need to plan to live on returns rather than the fund.
