Nigeria with it's current economy should not have more than 60 million people, so you would need to take over a hundred million people away to make it easier to get employment.

Population is not the problem. Population has been growing but gdp has not been growing at the same rate. Oil is still our major revenue earner and talking about oil, how many barrels do we refine in a day?... We still have to export the oil to refine. So the sector is even not working maximally.

And the reason for the above is because Nigerian government for many years refused to make policies that encourages the startup and growth of small scale and medium scale businesses and industries.

The resultant effect is the skyrocketing rate of unemployment and under-employment in Nigeria today, and it will continue for the next centuries to come until Nigerians develop sense and start voting the right leaders with right vision and goal.

In Nigeria, a young man or woman will have a beautiful business idea and skill....but he or she cannot get capital to kickstart his or her viable business idea unless he or she is from a rich family background that can fund his or her business ideas.

Nigerian banks will claim they give small business loans, but the collateral is out of reach of young entrepreneurs, and even the interest rate can kill big/established corporations like Google, Microsoft or Facebook if at all they succeed in taking the hell-fire bound loans offered by Nigerian banks.


What about basic amenities that support and encourage the growth of businesses like steady electricity supply, good road network, affordable internet, etc, do they exist in Nigeria NO!!

It is small scale and medium scale businesses that grow a nation, not the big companies....any booming economy you see anywhere in the world, go and check, there are uncountable number of successful small scale businesses.


Nigerian government need to focus on helping more small and medium scale businesses and industries to spring up and grow faster....that's the only way out, not through N-Power or increase in minimum wage.

You need more big businesses to solve unemployment. A big business will hire hundreds and thousands of people that small businesses won't hire.

The basic problem is that the big businesses are folding up. Companies are pulling out of Nigeria. Go to Ikeja Industrial Estate, a lot of companies have left. Companies like Nestle, Unilever and P & G have moved some product lines to Ghana and other African countries. So, they laid off the casual workers that run those factories in Nigeria.

Check out any developed country, it is the big businesses that hire more. Countries try to attract big investors to their country to reduce unemployment. Opposite is the case in Nigeria with unfavourable policies.

Small businesses have now replicated each other to the extent that they are no longer as profitable as they should be. Everywhere you see multiple barbing salons, tailors, canteens, shoe makers, photocopying centres, bakeries, pure water companies, drink sellers etc.

Many of the owners have faced reduced profits. Because, lack of innovation is making everyone to sell the same thing.

Big businesses are the solution. Not small businesses.

See I think Nigerian youth needs to wake up to the reality on ground.. it's not only tie, suit plus office jobs that jobs for graduates. E.g bank jobs, oil &gas, big manufacturing companies etc

In the western world u will see graduate like u doing waiter's job, transportation jobs, sale people jobs wtc.

No job no job but there are alot of opportunities for uberDriving, danfo driving, bus conductor, professional tailors, professional salespeople etc

So stop complaining of no jobs.., start with these jobs and grow through financial intelligence.

just tot i should say this .....Nieria is now a jungle,if you understand how jungle works,you will understand it is just Man and His God....As a Graduate or any individual at all,if the high paying jobs are not coming,take up the low one to keep yourself busy,while doing it,enroll to get a skill,Digital Skill as it were,cos that is the Best...then input those digital skill in your cv and keep on applying for those high paying job,and also hussle online with those digital skills,we have upwork,fiveer and the rest....one thing with Digital skill is that you can make money with it online,regardless of where you reside,and finally,..leave this country when you save up enough Money!

I have advertised for workers, but application are not being made. Jobs are out there but people are probably just failing to apply.

Maybe unemployed young Nigerian expect employers to line up outside their front door to offer them immediate employment meeting their exact requirements of hours and pay.

Your point is pertinent and I can relate to it. Where I currently work imparted a great deal of knowledge in me without prior experience in this current line of job. I started as a trainee but now I am confirmed as an experienced staff. Most Nigerian graduates are intelligent and teachable, they will excel at any given field if giving the opportunity.

Connection is EVERYWHERE. In Australia, it is worse than Nigeria.
The differences are:
1) The system was designed to ensure that even the common cleaner gets paid enough money to pay rent, feed family and send kids to school. YES!
2) They have more skill oriented schools where secondary school kids rush into to become Plumbers, Electricians, Builders, Carpenters. These four professions are MONSTERS. You earn like a king when you are one of these people.
3) Minimum wage is well balanced to enable an adult cope with their economic situation.
4) Finally, in entrepreneurship, they regulate it to ensure that if there are two businesses on the same street, one doesn't take all the patronage. So, they have maximum number of slots of appointment given to each business per day. If you don't want to wait for months to be attended to, try the neighboring business.
