Chapter 26
Felicia rubbed her husband’s hand to wake him up. Her hands felt cold against his. She called his name softly and he stirred. He muttered something that sounded like five more minutes. Felicia shook her head and chuckled softly. Dapo always said the same thing every morning. She decided to treat him like Dapo and smacked his bum.
“Daddy Dapo.”, she called and his eyes fluttered open. He groaned at the appellation she had given him. He hated that name. He said it made him feel old.
“Morning. What’s the time?”, he said as he rubbed his eyes with the heels of his hands. She told him and he groaned. He rolled to the edge of the bed and then went on his knees. Felicia was certain he was awake as he mumbled his matins and left to sit at the vanity.
She picked up her deodorant and applied it under her arms. She would have applied her makeup but lately the smell of her foundation and powder triggered her morning sickness so she steered clear of them. She spritzed her new perfume on her wrists and behind her ears. The fragrance started a churn in her belly and she swallowed and sat still. How long was this going to last? It wasn’t this bad when she was pregnant with Dapo and Nancy. Maybe it was because of the two babies in her womb. She smiled and rubbed her belly.
She stood slowly and walked over to the beside table and picked up he pill case. She pouted her pills for the morning onto her palm and swallowed them with the aid of water from the bottle on the table. She fought the urge to regurgitate and pushed the pills down her gullet. The drugs left her mouth bitter and she drank more water.
She sat on the bed and waited for Jaiyé to be done. He mumbled the few confessions he made every morning and then looked at her. He smiled weakly and she smiled back.
“How are you doing? Did you go to the doctor?”, he said as he stood up and went to the wardrobe.
“Your children are being a pain.”, she said mischievously as he flipped through suit and shirt options. He picked out a black pinstriped suit and a white shirt and laid it on the bed.
He looked at her and tilted his head and smiled. Though Dapo was an obedient and respectful boy, Jaiyé wondered if he could ever do wrong in Felicia’s eyes. “Let me guess. You and Dapo fought last night. What did he do?”, he said.
“My Dapo is an angel.”, she said and flipped her hair over her shoulder. Jaiyé rolled his eyes as he searched the wardrobe for his cufflinks, wristwatch and tie. “I am talking about the two rascals inside me.”
“As if Dapo can do anything wrong.”, he muttered and walked towards the bathroom before her words sank in and he turned to face her. “Did you just say two rascals?”
Her mirthful grin said it all and he rushed over to carry her. “Jaiye, put me down please.”, she shouted and swatted his shoulders merciless. “Please, I feel nauseous.”
“Sorry.”, he said as he put her down. He kissed her forehead and snaked his arms around her waist. “Thank you, Jesus.”, he muttered panting in exhilaration. “When did you find out?”
“Yesterday. I wanted to tell you when you came in but you fell asleep as I was talking. Jaiyé, I’m so glad. God has finally compensated us for the baby we lost.”, she said and rested her head on his chest. “They are all I can think about. My boss is going to murder me but I can’t stop daydreaming about who they’ll look like.”
Jaiyé hummed in response and wondered how to tell her what he wanted to. “Felicia?”
“Yes, my love. Baba Ibeji.”, she cooed mischievously as she grinned unto his chest.
“I automatically earn that title, don’t I?”, he said and she laughed. “Felicia, I have something to tell you.” He waited for her reaction. She broke the hug and looked up at him with smiles. “I want us to go and apologise to your father.” His words were a heavy torrent that washed away her smile and left no traces of the curled lips that lighten her face. As though all the color in her was sucked away, she turned blanched and she took two steps away from him.
“Did I hear you correctly?”, she said.
“Felicia, you did. Our marriage was built on lies. And we dishonoured your father and hurt him. I can understand why he did what he did…”
She didn’t let him finish before she shouted, “Are you justifying his actions? Are you saying he was right I doing the horrendous things he did? Jaiyeola, is that what you’re saying?”
“Maybe I am justifying his actions. What we did was every bit as horrendous. Felicia…”
“No!”, she sobbed. Her face reddened with tears of anguish. “You don’t know how much I suffered. You know what you were told. I know what I went through. That animal is indign and will not receive any apologies from me.”
“Felicia!”, he shouted and she crossed her arms across her chest indignantly. She was till crying but he didn’t care. How could she call her father an animal? “What is wrong with you?”
“Look, Jaiye. I am not sorry for what I said. He is an animal and I will not apologise. And the day you go to him, that day you can forget you have a wife and children. I will take my children and you will never see any of us again. I did it for two years. So don’t test me. Jaiyé, I am not threatening you. I am promising you. We will leave and for as long as you live your eyes will not see our shadows let alone us..”, she said and left the room.

Folá Ige sat by his daughter and held her hand. To think, her engagement party was supposed to be this week. How she had come down with leukemia of all diseases baffled him. He had thought it was a childhood disease but the doctor said though it was common in children, adults could have it too. That wasn’t the painful part. She needed a bone marrow donor. He was too old to donate and so was his wife. Jolá was out of the question. Even if Jolá could donate bone marrow with the pending issue with his son’s ex-wife he doubted Jolá would ever come to his aid. None of his other three children's HLA types matched hers. He turned and saw her fiancé and sighed. When the doctor said seventy-five percent of patients didn’t have siblings whose HLA matched theirs, the young man had instinctively offered to donate. They didn’t match either. The register for donors in Nigeria was very small. He considered flying her out of the country but the doctor suggested against it saying HLA differed by ethnic group.
He hated this HLA of a thing. Couldn’t it be as simple as having the same blood type? He would have gladly given every drop of blood in his body to save her. Why was it so difficult? It was as though God was punishing him. Was God punishing him? Because of Elsa? He had ruined her life. And somehow he couldn’t forget the last sermon he heard in church. Something about God punishing children for the sins of their fathers and fathers eating sour grapes and the children’s teeth being set on edge. That Sunday he had been so afraid. Would his four daughters be raped too? He remembered the instance the pastor gave. How David’s sin with Uriah's wife was punished. The son from that union died and Absalom slept with his father’s concubines in public.
Now, his first daughter had cancer of the blood. He had been praying for forgiveness since he became born again. Did God really have no intention of forgiving him? His daughters were innocents. He hadn’t even had them when he raped Elsa.
God, please, have mercy.
His wife ran into the ward panting. The rims of her eyes were red. She had been crying since Peju got admitted. Her tears and sobs turned into wails and weeping as each HLA sample tested with their daughter's was unmatched. She had a weird smile on her face probably because of the crust her years had formed on her face.
“Mummy, what is it?”, Dayo, their daughter’s fiancé, asked in a worry frenzy.
“Dayo, we have three possible donors we haven’tcontacted yet.”, his wife said in glee.
“Really?”, the boy asked in elation.
He raised his eyebrow and stared at her as she manufactured three donors. “Oya, o. Who are the three donors? How could we have missed three donors?” He wasn’t getting his hopes up for nothing.
“Dele and his two children.”, his wife listed in ecstasy. His curiosity and irritation faded into dejection.
“Gbagbe e. Forget it. Ko s'ana n be.”, he said and turned to his daughter.
“What do you mean by ko s'ana n be? If Dele is angry with his father, how is that our fault? He and Peju are cousins. He should want to help her.”, Kemi asserted.
“Kemi, o o l'ojuti. You have no shame. Do you know what Délé looks like? But you want to go and ask him to donate his bone marrow to a cousin he doesn’t know. If you have no pride, I do.”, Folá spat at his wife.
“Sir, permit me to say. Mummy is right. Saving Peju's life is bigger than our pride. If I have to beg this Délé guy then I will. All that matters is that Peju is well.”, Dayo said and his wife nodded in approval.
Folá scowled at the boy and hissed. “I thought you had something better to say.”
“Folajimi, nkankan o gbodo se omo mi. If you have to call your nephew and beg him, I don’t know. But nothing must happen to my daughter. Because you are growing shoulder pads and huffing in pride. If that pride will donate marrow to my daughter, then go ahead and be a peacock. If not, you had better toss that AG title aside and the pride that comes with it and do what real fathers do.”, his wife scorned and left the ward.
“Excuse me, sir.”, the young man said and left too.
God, you have decided to ridicule me. Ahh, Folá, o ti te!
Folá's phone vibrated in his pocket and he brought it out. Jaiyé was calling. He had to go back to work. He had left all his duties on the shoulders of the young man. And no matter how strong and efficient those shoulders were, they weren’t meant for the burden he had cruelly placed on them. He picked the call and said, “Hello.”
“Sir, I'm so sorry to disturb you but have you seen the new bill the National Assembly just tabled before the president?”, the man said in panic. He could hear noises in the background. Most likely staff discussing the bill. Folá, now, could not be bothered by the content of any act. So long as it didn’t outlaw bone marrow transplant. Jaiye wouldn’t have called him if it wasn’t important. At least, to the nation. Now, his daughter’s health was the most important thing to him. He decided to feign interest.
“No, I haven’t. What about it?”, he asked.
“Sir, it’s a poorly constructed bill to reduce the number of inmates on death row. How? By carrying out the death sentence the very day it is given. It leaves only twenty four hours to process the appeal.”, Jaiye said.
“What?!”, he shouted as he recalled Délé’s ex-wife. If she died, Dele would be sad and a reconciliation with Jolá would be impossible. And Jolá would in turn ruin him.
“Sir, it violates the Constitution, the rights to life, fair hearing and…” Jaiyé’s words were lost on him. If Dele was angry, he would never donate his bone marrow. The waiting list for a donor was three years long due to absence of available donors. Anything could happen to his Peju in three years. If Jolá was angry, his practice and reputation would be tarnished. Both ways, he'd be finished.
“Ahh!”, he shouted into the phone and Jaiyé's nagging stopped.
“Sir?”, Jaiye asked. Folá realized he was still on a call and hung up.

Elsa grudgingly stood as the door bell rang. She had always told Omotunde to take the key with her whenever she was going out. Regina gooed at the sound of the door and Elsa smiled and gooed back at her and the girl giggled. Elsa laughed as she walked to the door. She opened the door and came face to face with a sweaty Lydia. Her brows were furrowed and she was panting. Did she jog all the way here?
“Good afternoon. Donald isn’t here. Are you okay?”, she asked in genuine concern.
“I know Donald isn’t here. Please, did… by any chance, is Robert here?”, Lydia asked with her voice quivering.
“No.”, Elsa said and Lydia’s face crumpled. “Is he missing?”
“I left him to get some groceries and when I got back he wasn’t in the house anymore. I’ve looked everywhere. If Donald finds out, he’ll hate me.”, she said crying.
“Calm down. Robert doesn’t stray. He likes to play hide and seek. Have you checked all the rooms in your house.”, Elsa said.
“Yes. I’ve asked everyone in my block but no one has seen him. He’s a white sheepdog. How could no one have seen him?”, Lydia sobbed.
“Will you wait so I can put the baby in the stroller? Then we can go and look for him.”, Elsa offered.
“You’ll help me look for him?”, the woman said bewildered.
“Of course.”
In the next five minutes, Elsa called Omotunde and got the baby ready for a long stroll. As they got out of the building, they met Omotunde returning. Elsa handed the baby to her and asked her to take her upstairs and went on with the search.

Rosanna looked up at the sound of her door opening and saw her step mum. She smiled and greeted the lady. She barely saw her these days. She sat up and looked expectantly at her. When she was younger she loathed the woman and blamed her for her father’s refusal to return but as she grew she realized that the woman came into the picture much later.
“Rose, can we talk?”, the woman asked.
“Of course.”, she replied and the woman sat on the bed. Rosanna’s mind danced around thinking what the topic of the tete a tete could be.
“Rose, I know we barely know each other. And somehow, I feel it’s my fault. I was too much of a chicken. I was afraid to get close to you. I knew you didn’t like me and I was content with the cold relationship we had.”, the woman started holding Rosanna’s gaze with hers.
Rosanna imagined if she could have had a warmer relationship with her father’s wife back then and no picture could come to mind. Things were better the way they happened. Rosanna knew that if the woman had tried to force a relationship down her throat she would have gotten her hard.
“Rose, look. I’m definitely not the one hundredth person on the list of people who could give you advice but please try to make up with your father. This battle of the wills has gone on for too long. This situation isn’t an impasse. You can both try to reason together. Try to see things from his own point of view. You’re still his baby girl and he wants no harm to befall you. Besides, what elders can see while sitting, youngsters can’t see it even if they climb a tree.”, the woman said.
“I appreciate you coming here and your advice. Really. If this had been any other situation, I might have been a little willing to bend, to compromise but this isn’t about Daddy protecting me. He’s trying to control me. To make me stay with him for as long as he wants but what he doesn’t realise is that I’m grown. I can make my own decisions. And he’s turned his back on me once. Why shouldn’t I? Look, I’m living for the States tomorrow and Dare and I are getting married. If he wants to hate me, he should go ahead. If he couldn’t give up his happiness for me, I’m not going to do the same for him.”

Elsa panted as she waited for the shop attendant to get her a bottle of water. They had scouted half the estate but no one had seen Robert. Donald had been invited to give a speech at a conference. He would be back anytime soon. She didn’t want to think of what would happen if they hadn’t found Robert by the time he returned. Donald didn’t just call Robert his baby for nothing. He believed Robert was a chance to raise a baby. He had gotten him as a puppy and took care of him till date. If anything happened to Robert, Donald might not recover.
“Iwo da?”, Elsa shouted to hasten up the attendant. She turned to Lydia. The woman was already chewing on her manicured nails. She was afraid Donald would hate her for losing Robert. Elsa wanted to tell her to calm down but Elsa herself wasn’t calm. She worried about how Donald would take the news. He’d the devastated.
“Sorry, ma. I wanted to get a very chilled bottle.”, the young man explained and handed the bottle to her. She paid him in change and immediately broke the seal and opened the bottle. As she was about to down the water, she heard her name and then Lydia’s. She knew who the voice belonged to. A shiver worked its way down her body and her mouth went dry. She drank her water. She would rather face him with her thirst quenched than with thirst tearing at her throat. She capped the bottle and then noticed the woman beside her quivering in fear.
“D-D-Donnie. You’re back so early.”, Lydia stated.
“I left after I gave my speech. I remembered Robert has a seven o'clock appointment at the vet's tomorrow. I decided to come home early and rest.” He then turned to the shop attendant. “ Hey, you. Please give me one pack of that dog biscuit usually buy”
He smiled at Lydia. “I was given some food at the conference. Maybe we could eat it together at your place before I leave with Robert.” He said in a low tone.
Elsa wondered how long this would last.
“Donnie, I have something to tell you. I… I am… I’m so sorry but Robert is missing.”, she spat out and ripped the band-aid off.
Elsa watched Donald’s smile dissolve. He blinked repeatedly. “What do you mean by missing?”, he asked with his voice dull and full of fear.
“We can’t find him.”, Lydia said. “Donald, I’m sorry. I don’t know where he went to. I went to get groceries and the next thing, I couldn’t find him. Please, forgive me.”, she cried and wiped her cheek

We can’t find him.”, Lydia said. “Donald, I’m sorry. I don’t know where he went to. I went to get groceries and the next thing, I couldn’t find him. Please, forgive me.”, she cried and wiped her cheek.
Donald stuttered saying incoherent words. Elsa wanted to hold him and tell him to calm down but Donald just walked out of the shop.
“Daddy, should I still bring the biscuits?”, the attendant shouted. Elsa told him no and pulled a dazed and crying Lydia out of the shop. They met Donald by his car, removing his jacket, wristwatch, cufflinks and shoes. He dumped them all in the back seat of his car. He pulled out a pair of slippers from the back of his car and locked the vehicle. He began walking, shouting for Robert with every step he took.
Elsa’s eyes watered at the sight. What would Donald do if he didn’t find Robert? Elsa tried not to think about it and hoped they would find him.

Felicia tucked the envelope of money deep inside her handbag and dialed Ose's number again. She was already making her preparations. If Jaiyé was going to be stupid enough to go and apologise to her father then she wasn’t going to stick around enough for whatever charm her father would use on him to be experimented on her. She would take Dapo this time and flee. She had warned Jaiyé the first time not to trust her father but he did and she was the one who paid the price. Not this time. If Jaiyé came back to beat the furniture in the house then all well and good. It wouldn’t be her.
She had already wired some money to Ose. If the time came, he’d use the money to get her an apartment. As for schools, she had already asked Ose to help her find an inexpensive but quality school for Dapo. She’d probably have to get multiple jobs and take on a few free-lance jobs but she didn’t mind. She wouldn’t be the first woman to singlehandedly raise children.
Ose didn’t pick the call and groaned in frustration. Had he received the alert or what? She decided to call him later. She got back to typing her letter requesting for a transfer back to the Lagos branch of FDL publishing. Her phone rang and she checked the caller ID. It was Jaiyé. Why was he calling her? To convince her to go her father’s? Didn’t he hear her loud and clear? She rejected the call again.
A few minutes later, her phone dinged at the arrival of a text message. It was from Jaiyé.
Are you rejecting my calls? I don’t want to believe you are. Felicia, call me back.
For a lawyer, he was a bit slow. Of course, she was rejecting his calls. She didn’t want to talk to him, so why would she call him back? She hissed and saved her letter.
Felicia.
Not now. Her entire soul screamed. She wasn’t going to apologise to her father. He was her father for crying out loud. And he deliberately set her up for such a horrendous life. Weren’t parents supposed to love their children unconditionally? She didn’t think there was anything Dapo could do to make her so angry enough to do evil to him. She wouldn’t apologise. Over her dead body. If she had died by the hands of Jaiyé or trying to deliver her stillborn daughter? What then? She didn’t have a father o. And she wasn’t apologising to anyone.
Felicia.
Not now. Her heart said and the voice in her quietened till there was a deafening silence.
