I like your simplistic but vividly engaging story telling pattern of writing.

Your merging of indigenous metaphysical identity and the over time tested commercial systems that the town is well known for into the story is superb.

I have not shown as much interest or looked up to the success of any story on this platform as I'm doing with this. Please tell our story well!

More ink in your pen!

Chapter 2

The day moved rather slowly unlike other days in the month of December that fly like the vengeful harmattan wind, and the sun had chosen that day to combat with the wind which wasn’t merciful on anybody’s skin. Akwaugo brought out a bottle of petroleum jelly, mashed it on both palms and rubbed evenly on both legs and arms, while she inserted a small quantity inside her nose and sniffled.

It was the worst time of the year for her delicate yellow skin, sometimes she had to treat blisters throughout the Harmattan. The only good thing this season was the extra monies she makes in her business, old women who would want to cook special delicacies for their children that would come back for the festive season, always pay more for her ‘Ukwa’ and ‘Ukpaka’.

“Akwa…it seems like your goods are almost finished” Nwamaka asked

Nwamaka- who would have thought that the most notorious girl in her class during their secondary school days would turn out to have her life well favored? Nwamaka was an ‘Itibolibo’ who did not only carry the class on her head at the end of every academic section, but the whole school as well. To top it all; Nwamaka didn’t care a bit about school, she wanted to marry the richest man in Nnewi and have children “I want to marry Ibeto’s son one day” Nwamaka would boast to the amusement of others.

“Nne, I didn’t know you are back, when did you return?”

“Three days ago o, you know I will never miss ‘Ozo ebunu’ masquerade dance for any reason” Nwamaka added

Nwamaka had left the village three months after Akwaugo’s wedding to live with her auntie in Port Harcourt, the next thing that was heard about her was that she had gotten herself a white man who walked with Julius Berger and drives big jeep. The old woman snapped their fingers in disgust and ceased little moments to call her mother unworthy, the young girls condemned her openly in their “Umu Okpu meetings” and admire her secretly. When she later came down to the village with her white husband for wine carrying and marriage rights; nobody dared speak to her face, the Umunna were eager to accept the oil money from the oil city. Her traditional wedding was the talk of the village, everybody was there except Akwaugo and her husband, like always, Mezie would not allow her go near any place of festivity alone “So boys will see you and start running around you like ‘Ariri akubiri odu’ (a millipede without tail)” he had said, that morning when she had already dressed up for the occasion. He didn’t go either “I will not be a party to giving a prostitute a license, how did she meet the white man if not from prostitution?” Mezie had retorted.

“How are your children my sister, did you come with them, how many do you have now?”

“I have only two o, and they are here”

Akwaugo sneered within, how could someone call two children ‘only’ that is already too much now, if only God would even answer her prayer and give her just one. “I thank God for you my sister” She stood up from the stool and dust her backside “You are looking amazing! Port Harcourt is doing you well”

Nwamaka smiled proudly “Why wouldn’t it? I didn’t go to Port Harcourt to count bridges, and my husband pampers me like a babe…” She waited for Akwaugo to say something, but Akwa was mute “Akwa how is life treating you? How is your husband?”

“You have seen me now, I am fine” Akwa managed a smile

“I don’t like how you are looking Akwa, you look like a maid…”

“Nwamaka ibiakwa, everybody mustn’t be as fashionable as you…some of us like being natural” Akwaugo felt the remaining grain of Breadfruit on her fingers as a distraction

“Beautiful Akwaugo…is it not you again? the envy of Maria Regina secondary school”

“Nwamaka leave me o, people change”

“Agreed, but some are changed by there husbands, talking of husband, how is that local champion of yours?”

“Nwamaka please stop, I will not allow you talk about Mezie that way…”

“I know, he is your hero that is why you are not seeing what you have become under him…I have told you to leave that man and come to the city but you refused”

“Come to the city to do what exactly, except Mezie wants to relocate, I cannot go anywhere, Mezie will never allow that self”

“Abandon that insecure man!, dump his sorry ass!”

“Even Jesus and his mother Mary will not forgive me if I leave my husband, do you know what you are saying? Mezie is my life! He has done so much for me when nobody else did…”

“So he owe you then…”

“Yes! Yes Nwamaka! He is my husband!!!”

“Okay o, the world is moving and you should move with it. I heard he sent you to nursing school, yet here you are in Nkwor Nnewi…he couldn’t even allow you work in the Government hospital…”

“We want it that way…when I am done with er child bearing er maybe…” Akwaugo stammered

“Its Okay” Nwamaka cut in “Do you still have Locust beans? I will want to have a reasonable quantity”

Akwaugo remembered she had to buy a big fowl for Christmas immediately Nwamaka left her shop. she hissed and left to buy what ever fowl she could still find by that time of the evening. She was panting heavily with two sick looking birds on one hand, the kind her mother would have referred to as ‘Nwa uriom Okuko’ and cursed Nwamaka under her breath for making her miss the opportunity to get big ones. She was engrossed in herself and didn’t notice the tan colored, tall bulky self-assured man that was leaning on the single rod which held her roof, with his legs crossed and his arms crossed over his chest

“Thank God” He unfold his arms and gave her a leisure smile “I was almost about to give up seeing you again” he thrusted his chest out and walked towards her “God! How I have longed to see you again” he bent to pick the birds that she had dropped on seeing him, all the while, his gaze smoldered her face with intensity.

*

Akwaugo felt her temperature rising all of a sudden, her breath stopped in her throat and a mixture of fear and something else washed over her- something she didn’t want to feel, something she was doing well ignoring until this stranger showed up and muddle her effort.

“What are you doing here” she whispered with trembling lips, looking side by side as if someone was watching her. she left him standing and walked into her shop, picked things and dropped them carelessly.

Morgan followed her, covering the entrance of the small shop with his frame “I want to see you” he wasn’t sure any more. The woman before him had an ashen face, it was obvious she didn’t want to see him

“Why?” She almost screamed “Why do you want to see me? I told you not to look for me” She looked over her shoulder and over his “You don’t have to be here!”

“But you don’t expect me to forget about last night…” he was still calm, giving her a sly smile

“There was no last night!” she cut in, her voice pleading “I don’t know you…Leave me alone get out of here before my husband come here?”

“Oh that…you told me that last night, I actually doubted it”

“He Chineke nna! You promised me sir! You promised to keep what ever that happened between us, you said you will forget about it…why are you here looking for me now” she slapped her laps in frustration

“I am sorry lady but I needed to be sure I wasn’t dreaming” they were both talking in suppressed voices

“I am not a lady, I am a woman! A married woman, please go away now”

He was tongue tied, with he eyes fixed on her beautiful pleading face, he felt that spell again, an experience he had never had before, the spell that had made him agree to everything she had offered the other day, no matter how many times his instinct told him to turn and walk away, he didn’t want to. It was no longer an argument; he wanted her, he recognized it without questioning the first day he set his eyes on her that she would either be his bliss or his undoing, so shamelessly was his yawning that he felt like kicking himself.

How could he even feel so attracted to a married woman? Something he had never dreamt of in his life. His previous romance encounters have been brief and unsatisfying for both him and the women involved. One of which led to his marriage to his Australian wife and had produced his daughter Ariel, there was no love lost between him and Melisa, it was a contract union which earned him a comfortable stay in Canada, when the couple decided to work on their strained relationship. Melisa had died of complications after childbirth.

Relationship with women after that had been flings and short leaved uninteresting romance, he had always been careful with women who were either married or engaged, the closest he had gotten to taking another man’s wife was a year ago with Grace, that was even understandable because Grace was then divorced, though Grace later got back with her husband.

Morgan shook his head in a bid to shake off the abominable feeling “Do you have something to sell for me?” that was the only thing that came to his mind. Akwaugo looked at him in awe, he knew he sounded crazy “I will buy anything you want to sell to me now…” when it looked like she wouldn’t move “you don’t want people to wonder what both of us has been talking about here since, do you? at least let them see me walk out of here with something” he added

Akwaugo cleared her throat and stood up to check what was remaining of her wares, his eyes mirrored every of her movements, making her uncomfortable “Here, let me help” he placed his hands on hers and she pulled away sharply. “I am sorry” he muttered and waited for her to put in some things in a nylon bag for him. Morgan was consumed with lust and needed to mask it.

“Bring it to my car when you are done” he said with an air of authority and walked out. Few yards away from her shop, she could hear cheers and songs from women
“Onwa nidi anyi mma mbo mbo
Onwa nidi anyi mma mbo mbo
Onye chi mere eze na mmadu apughi ina ya
Mbo mbo…”

Akwaugo came out to see the same man hooping stylishly in a funny dance step to the melodious songs of market women, two things crossed her mind when she carried the nylon bag and followed him, either he had shared monies to the women or he was one of their well known rich sons, if the later was the case; she wondered why she didn’t know him?

One thing was sure, he was a man whom has seen riches, for his casual combat Jean and red Tshirt spelt money. Aside some little strands of gray on his well-groomed beards and hair, he looked quite young to be accorded the kind of reverence she saw.

He opened the boot and she carefully placed the nylon bag inside, he hurried to her side and covered her fingers with his, this time he held them on a firm grip and made it impossible for her to pull away “A name, just a name and I will let you go I mean it”

Akwaugo went pale “Please let me go” she whispered

“I have been consumed with the thought of you since you left…please give me your name, let me remember you all the days of my life” he managed a smile, waves to passers-by and returned his attention on her “I am not asking for too much beautiful one…”

Everything about this man made her body convulse with feelings she was so ashamed to admit, how could one man have such pride and still possesses gentleness that was capable of making her do things she wouldn’t do with any other man. He was a very attracting man and he knew it, good looks mixed with riches and affluence; a proud Igbo man…who exhibit this unique trait with class and subtility. How come she had suddenly seen this man after many years of seeing only her husband? Her heart pulsated so rapidly that she could hear the thudding like the local drum used by her church choir. No man had ever drawn such feeling from her, in her seven years of marriage, she had never felt an attraction so strong and a craving so shameless.

“Akwaugo”

“Akwaugo” he repeated the name as if he was savoring a delicious meal “Akwa, the name suits you”

She ignored him “Your money is three thousand four hundred and twenty naira” she mumbled the words.

He brought out some note from his pocket, counted out few and offered them to her, she didn’t move to take it “Here, take it” he urged

Akwaugo shook her head “It is too much; my money is not that amount” she had counted the money with her eyes while the man was counting it

“I am giving it to you as a souvenir, come on take it, I swear there is nothing to it”

“I dare not take more than what is mine, I am not hungry nor a bagger…”

He was taking aback, blinking his eyes severally in shock and a little disappointed- angry rather because of his bruised ego, he removed some of the monies and offered the rest to her again “This is Okay I guess” he didn’t make any effort to hand the money to her, he had left them on his palm and waited for her to take them off his hold, his fingers closed round her wrist as she tried taking the money “You have a skin as soft as the skin of a new born” he observed. He had thought she would fight him but she didn’t, he only felt her trembled

Asa Kedu ihe obu? What is it?” the echo of her husband’s voice slap her back to consciousness, she immediately pulled her hand off Morgan’s and the four naira notes scattered on the road, she hurriedly followed and picked them from where the evening wind left them and came back to the side of her husband “What is this man telling you?” Mezie blunted, his nose flared in anger, one could count the hairs in his nostrils

“He bought something from me…” she was about explaining

“Is it in the car that you now sell things to people?” He eyes Morgan angrily, “Don’t you know you are a married woman? Nwanyi no na di!” He emphasized the ‘wife’

“Erm…good evening sir, I am…” Morgan tried to redeem himself

“I know who you are, Amam onye ibu! I am just saying that my wife has no business in your car!” the two men looked at each other intensely, one sizing the other “Asa come lets go, I have already tied your things to the machine” He pulled his wife by the hand like one would do a stubborn child
Ndi Ogwu ego, money ritual man” he muttered

Morgan watched the couple as they headed back inside the market. When he didn’t expect it, the woman- Akwaugo-Asa turned and gave him a piercing stare before her husband turned her head back to the road roughly. The scenario would have warned him to stay clear, but he was a man that had lost his senses at the sight of a beautiful maiden, he swore to see her again, he would do anything thing to make sure he set his eyes on her.

Chapter 3
Mezie-

Fate they say is like an unpredictable and unfaithful woman, she doesn’t smile at you the same way forever, and when the gods want to pleasure themselves, they sent mortals on a wild goose chase. When Mezie took his wife down to ‘Okwu Edo’ deity, to make her swear an oath of perpetual faithfulness to him alone, on a Sunday morning, two nights after their wedding, he didn’t know he would one day be in desperate need for a child.

He was rather consumed with jealousy and suspicion, warning off every man like flies off his wife and engaging in fist fights like a mad man. Nobody told him that a beautiful woman is like a ripe Udala fruit on a tree, you are not the only person who saw it, even if you ended up plucking it, someone might accost you on your way home and either take it away from you or forces you to share.

When he found out he wasn’t going to keep fighting and monitoring his Akwaugo for the rest of their married lives, he had employed the help of a deity.

“Swear before Edo (the Nnewi deity) That you will not sleep with another man until you die”

He was desperate, time wasn’t as it used to be and his Asa had grown into maturity, even after paying Akwaugo’s bride price and completing every traditional marriage rites, men with big cars from the city had openly flirted with her and asking for her hand in marriage, the most annoying part was some of then gave her cat calls even while him, Mazie was with her…

“No man will ever see your unclothedness except me, you will not love another man except me”

The priest had led Akwaugo through the oat and had offered her a bitter concoction “You will go with the cream, rub it in your vagina for seven days, if any man who passed through your legs, except your husband, you will die” the priest had warned after handing the mixture in a bottle to her.

Akwaugo had hated the place, the little secret ceremony and the priest, her hands had refused to accept the cream but Mezie had snatched the cream from the priest, and they had ridden home in silence.

“My husband, what made you think I will sleep with another man? Why is it difficult for you to trust me?” Akwaugo has summoned courage to asked when they got home

“I am only protecting my investment; no man would eat the fruit of my labor…where were all these men when I took care of you from your childhood? M piachasia gi, ha abi I napum nri no nu (After dusting you up, they now come to take you from me)”

He had taken his time to apply the cream on his wife every day until seven days, he didn’t want any mistake. Opening her legs and inserting fingers inside her was not new to him, before their marriage, when Akwa was still in Secondary school, he would bring her to his chemist shop, pull her skirt up and insert his two fingers into her “Let me check whether someone had broken your seal, Anya adighi umuazi umunwoke a mma, one has to be careful with boys in this village” he would sniff his fingers and nod.

“I will not cheat on you Mezie, you mean everything to me…there is no need for this” his wife had protested one of the days he was rubbing the cream on her, but Mezie was far gone deep into his jealousy and insecurity.

Exactly one year later, fate clothed him with sack and like a friend who sojourned in a foreign land; happiness picked its bag and boarded a bus to another land, his manhood had slept and didn’t wake up. The gods have given him a beautiful wife and had taken his manhood.

The first time it happened, they have had their dinner of fufu and Ofe onugbu, and was lazing about on the bed; playing with each other. The play was about to graduate into a sheet rumble when he felt his manhood gone flat like a deflected felele ball. Nothing he did that night was able to awoken it “Maybe I eat too much” was his excuse, but it never returned from its slumber since that day.

For another four years he had taken every kind of drugs and had met every herbalist he had known, for the next four years he had grown more bitter, jealous, irrational and more attached to Akwaugo, clinging to her- watching her every move like a hawk “Don’t forget the oath, you sleep with another man, you die” he would always say to her

Then came the pressure for a child “If she can’t give you a child, why is she still there? Is she a television that you are watching every evening? let us find you a woman that her waist is filled with babies” his old mother disturbed him, he even started seeing the contempt and the scorn…the heats from his mother to his wife.

He became worried that Akwaugo would one day succumb to the pressure and would tell the world about his not being man enough, the villagers would sneer at him behind his back, they would laugh at him and his enemies would take his lands and his wife. So, for the second time, he ran to the deities for helps.

It was another Sunday, the day he doesn’t open his shop, when his mates were either getting ready for Sunday morning mass or waking their ancestors with Kola; Mezie took his wife to see a deity for the second time in less than five years. This time he had chosen a place far away from his village, he needed to go where he was not known, where his predicament would not be used to taunt him someday “Less the priest of Okwu Edo tells someone one day that I am not a man”

They had journeyed to Okija, to the secret coven of the most dreaded Okija deity, there he held his wife’s hand on a totem and was made to tell his wife the real truth about the genesis of his predicament by the Okija priestess.

“I slept with another man’s wife” he confessed shame faced “Nnuego- Okorie’s wife. I had gone to look for her husband for the money he borrowed from me three months ago, she was alone in the house” he couldn’t look Akwaugo on the face “Okorie caught us and swore with his offor that I will never be able to get my manhood up for my wife again” he had finished his confession and pleaded for his wife to forgive him

“But you made me swear that I will not sleep with another man, why did you look at another woman’s body when you have me?” Ukwuoma had wept

“You have to swear not to voice this to anyone about what you heard today” Mezie had insisted “No one should ever know I am the cause of our childlessness, on no account should you open your mouth to your family or my family…swear before Okija”
His wife had hesitated

“Swear for the love you have for me, if truly I am your husband and you appreciate all I have done for you, do this little thing for me Asa m, remember the sacrifices I made for your sake…”

“But I don’t need to swear in front of Agbara for you to know I will keep your secret…and besides, Agbara Okija can heal you”

“It doesn’t work that way woman” the Priest had corrected “The person who lay the curse on him must renounce the course with his offor first”

“Lets go back to Okorie now, please let us plead for his forgiveness together” Akwa had insisted

“You think I have not tried?” Mezie had retorted “Do this thing for me now…we can still go to Okorie later”

Mezie was desperate, only her commitment there could put his mind to rest. So, she had sworn never to breath a word about it to any living soul.

Mezie had thought that the visits to both Okwu Edo and Okija would keep him at peace, but he has become jumpier, more suspicious and unsure. he had kept trailing his wife secretly, eavesdropping her conversations with family members and friend; the few that still came around, making sure she was never out of his sight for too long.

As he sat on his wooden chair, eating roasted chicken and giving his wife furtive glances, he wondered about the man whom his wife had gone to meet the morning she had agreed to finally give herself to another man after almost a year of pleading and blackmailing her to do so,

He didn’t know why he would think about it now, it was good he didn’t know who the man was, he didn’t want anybody to mock him. but what if the man already knew who he was? What if his wife had lied about not revealing his identity…what if this man was an old lover? After all she was the one who has found the man and had made every arrangement. He dismissed the possibility of an old lover, he knew Akwaugo as a very fearful woman, the thought of death would not allow her speak with not to talk of agree to date another man.

He threw the remaining meat inside his mouth, licked his fingers and wondered what he would do if the effort didn’t yield the desired fruit, what would become of him if Akwaugo didn’t get pregnant with this one effort, he had watched her closely- waited to see her vomit or complain of morning sickness but she had remained as strong as a mule.

“Asa” he beckoned on her “Bia, come”

His wife was still beautiful, as the years has gone by, she kept blooming like fresh vegetable, her waist got thinner and her hips got rounder, they balanced perfectly like his mother’s earthen water pot. Her beauty no longer excited him, it rather mocked him, reminding him that he could no longer bend her over and ride on her backside, neither could he look upon her and feel his manhood go turgid. His mother was right; his beautiful wife has become another piece of fine furniture, a fine sculpture he could only look at.

“Are you well?” he asked

“Yes my husband, why do you ask?”

“I am just concerned, are you sure you are not feeling sick? I can bring testing things from my shop if you want”

“No, di m, I am fine” Akwaugo walked away

He was careful not to let her know why he was asking; he didn’t want her to see his desperation. He lifted a beaker of water to his lips and gulped, he took another mouthful, gargled and spat the water out.

He had another thing to worry about, the oath they took that forbade his wife from sleeping with another man. Akwaugo had asked him about it when he was still persuading her to get pregnant from another man and he had told her that he would take care of it.

“How can you take care of it? we have to go there together and unsay everything we said!”

The day he had agreed to go, he had told his wife not to bother going with him, he would settle everything and would come back for her if her presence was needed.

He had come back home with smiles and a gift for Akwaugo, “It is done, the priest made sacrifice to Edo and reminded the spirits that the husbands owe the wife and since I permitted you to go on the mission, that death should not visit you” he had said “But the oath still stands if you allow another man see your unclothedness after this” he had added

The truth however was that he had met a burial ceremony, the priest had died two weeks ago, he had gone to Okija for help but the Agbara Okija had insisted that the oath can only be broken at the same spot where it was taken.

Mezie had waited for another four market weeks, after the installation of another priest before he went back to Edo shrine. The new priest had performed some sacrifices and had called upon the spirit of the dead priest to come to their aid.

“It is done, she will not die from this act since both of you agreed” the new priest had assured him, but he was not so sure.

He had slept and woken up every day with fear that his wife may die, but as days turned to weeks and his wife did not complain of any strange feeling, he had decided to relax. Maybe The sacrifice actually worked, the deity understood that he was a desperate man in need of children to fill his compound.

The gods remember a man when his is at the sweetest moments of his life.

Akwaugo clutched the Rosary close to her chest like an amulet but her mind was far away from ‘hail Mary’ her guilt stared at her like a troublesome co-wife. He had never found Mezie, her husband unattractive until now.

No, unattractive wasn’t the word, it was her, she was the one with the problem and not Mezie. His slim and smallish nature had never bothered her before, neither had his voice that could pass for a female’s own. In fact, Akwaugo had even boasted to his mates about how ageless his husband looked. But as she looked at him from the window now, a pack of bones slouching like a rejected lizard, and smacking his lips noisily, she felt irritated.

Not that they were poor, in fact the she had never lacked anything since he married her, except of course what Mezie didn’t like or wouldn’t want her to have. As for food, they had so much to eat and even give to people, but Mezie had remained as skinny as he was years ago.

Nne anyi di aso, my mother Holy Mary…” Akwaugo looked at the portrait of the blessed virgin Mary that was hung on the wall “please save me your daughter from this mess, do not let me fall to the temptation of the devil”

If picture could speak, she would have appreciated a reply from the blessed mother, but only the beating of her heart spoke back.

She knew it was that stranger, the man who had poured his seed inside her, he had crept into her life and stole her peace. The thought of him sent a tingling sensation down her vagina, she clamped her thighs tight and shut her eyes, Adultery is a sin, but with this man- every thrust…every slam…every rhythmic beat was like an erotic spiritual rite of passage, that single act awoken her buried desires, she wanted more- in fact, she was lusting for him.

Akwa wiped her face and sat up from the chair, wore the Rosary round her neck and went to pack the plates which her husband had used to eat. She felt his eyes on her as she bent to pick them, years ago when they were newly married, he would have insisted on them eating together and would even feed her some meat, but things have changed.

“That man at the market” he brought up the topic “I don’t want you to see him again” he picked his teeth with his finger nail

“I have not been seeing him before” she didn’t try to hide her anger, and she had expected him to remind her not to use that tone on him but he seemed not to notice her anger- or probably chose to ignore

“I didn’t ask if you are seeing him before, I said do not see him again”

“What if he comes to buy from me?”

“Don’t sell to him, let him but from someone else. You are not the only person selling in the market”

Akwaugo opened her mouth to say something but decided against it, she gathered the plates and left in a hurry

“I am still thinking if you will still continue with that business self, after all, you are not feeding me with the money. Let those men go and rest while you rest too” Mezie muttered to himself
