I m happy for Akwaugo I just pray her husband finds out and let her leave the stupid, selfish and pride-ridden idiot. He made her not to enjoy her youthful age.
If you ask me I will say I m suspecting Amaka

Chapter 7

“Madam, Oga said I should tell you he is on his way back”

Akwaugo Shrugged half-heartedly. Mezie didn’t tell her about his trip to Onitcha, he never discussed business with her- only few times when he had to remind her that money doesn’t grow on trees, and that demanding money from him frequently would pull down the business. At first it was to protect her “it is harsh out there, I want my Asa to remain beautiful for me- Asa chop my money!” he would say, not that he gave so much, just enough to satisfy him- he called the shots, he knew how much was enough. Then came another line “Women are terrible in business, they make mistakes”

“When did you call him?” she said in a flat tone

“He called me, ma”

“Okay” She dismissed the boy with a wave. It would have bothered her that Mezie would rather give a phone to his apprentice than allow her have one. Come to think of it, she should console herself with the fact that she was one of the first to use a mobile phone in the village- in 2005, Bird flip it was, Mezie had gotten it for her on one of his trips to Onitcha. She was seventeen, in SS2 and didn’t know what to do with the phone except snapping pictures and playing ‘snake xenzia’ Mezie made sure she called no one- only him could call. Now he felt given her a phone was equal to exposing her to every man in the village “You are married, it is safe for us if you don’t have phone- before you give your number to everyone.” She hissed, she was older and tired, nothing Mezie did now would make her loose a sleep- at least not something as trivial as not having a phone. Only that it had shamed her a little when Morgan asked if she would give him a call.

Akwaugo frowned- she hardly thought of anything thing without his name creeping in, it’s been two weeks since the last time she was with him. She flushed, the more she wanted to erase him from her thought the more everything reminded her of him.

She missed him- she couldn’t tell him that, would never have told him. She wet her lips, that reminded her of his thumb on her lips that had sent fluid rushing in her mouth as the thought of him was doing now. Her brown gate flung opened and Nwamaka walked in

“I looked for you at your shop and your neighbors said you have not been there for three weeks,” she stood in front of Akwaugo- hands akimbo

“What are you dreaming about?”

“What do you mean what I am dreaming about? Was I sleeping when you came in” Akwaugo asked weakly

Nwamaka drew a Little chair that was by the wall of the house and sat beside her friend “Your husband is not around” her voice low, eyes darted round the house. She gave her mouth an ugly twist which Akwaugo ignored “This is where he wants you now, away from prying eyes- so he can monitor your every move…how many men that speaks to you…” this woman would have achieved something with her pretty face and smooth skin, Lucky ones do not know they are lucky. Nwamaka didn’t know if to pity her friend or laugh at how things had turned out for two of them. One would have thought that Akwaugo would be the one in the city- married a rich city husband, and she- stuck in the village, probably with a husband who know nothing about civilization.

“I thought you have gone back to port Harcourt” Akwaugo wondered what Nwamaka would still be doing in the village when almost everyone she knew that came from the city had gone back

“Oh, my husband is yet to be back from India, I don’t want to be lonely” You are not the only person that knows how to lie to save your face, Nwamaka thought. The truth was her white husband was never coming back and there was no big house or a car to go home to- those never belonged to her husband, they were privileges from the company. Her husband’s contract was over, so was her marriage and it was ‘bye-bye’ to luxury life except…

Akwaugo eased her weight from the plastic chair and sprang to her feet- Wrong move- she suddenly felt light headed and sank back on the plastic chair.

“What is it? Are you okay?”

“I think I am about to get sick” the fog gradually faded, but she felt nauseated “oh God, I don’t want to be sick now, I can’t deal with it”

“Your husband is a self-acclaimed pharmacist, you have drugs around you and you are complaining of feeling sick” Nwamaka laughed “Anyway- I am curious my friend, I want to know who gave you that gold” She almost didn’t sleep the day Akwaugo came with the trinket to her. She had wondered who it was that could afford such expensive thing and why give it to Akwaugo? “Is it a gift?” She asked.

Akwaugo gave the other woman a long stare “What is it with you and this Trinket? I told you it belongs to someone”

“I only want to know who gave it to you? Don’t think I am a fool Akwa, there is something about that thing that made you want to hid it from your husband” eyebrow furrowed, arms crossed, Nwamaka fixed a curious gaze on Akwaugo “Please my friend, you trusted me with this secret, at least let me know it is a gift and from whom it came from”

Akwaugo considered the plea in silence “Yes it is a gift” she finally said with a smile

Nwamaka gasped, sudden Jealousy replaced her shock “You don’t say…” she leaned forward “Please tell my friend- from where does this precious gift come from?” this was the life she promised herself, a life of continuous glamour, receiving gifts like this one was part of it. She went through her collections with her mind- all she was able to acquire for herself were steels, fake golds and one small gold stud Her husband brought for her on her last birthday, she was even feeling on top of the world them. Something this expensive in the hand of someone who may never know the worth no wear it? Nwamaka felt cheated

“Knowing the person is not necessary Nwamaka. Besides, he is gone!”

“A he…now we are getting somewhere” Amaka smiled coyly “Is he from this Nnewi? Which community?” God knows she would go to the end of the world to find this man

“An old friend, I don’t think mentioning his name would do any good”

Shoulder dropped, Nwamaka gave a bitter smile “Okay o, since you want to keep the identity of this Good man to yourself…” she clamped her hands on her laps “so where is it now?”

“Where is what?” Akwaugo was getting tired of the conversation. No- she was no longer comfortable, darkness has descended on them and her husband would walk in soon. She wouldn’t want him to meet Nwamaka nor overhear their conversation “Oh, that…I have put it away”

Nwamaka couldn’t hide her contempt this time- she quickly masked it and rose to her feet “I didn’t know it has gotten so late, I have to be going now my mother must be tired of taking care of those children”

Akwaugo carefully stood up and followed her to the gate “I am really glad you came”

Nwamaka nodded and left.

*

She stood by the mirror naked, tired to dress up after having her bath for the night. Running her hand on her long neck- she wondered what she would do if the beauty supplement drugs she came back to the village with got finished before she could figure out her next move. The problem wasn’t the money to buy them- though she feared how fast her account was thinning out, few weeks she had spent in the village.

Her husband had sneered when he caught her swallowing those drugs, she had told him that it enhances the skin, keeps one in shape and improves sexual libido in woman. Wasn’t that why he took her in in the first place?

Nwamaka sat her naked butt on the wooden chair and gazed steadily on her reflection, she still got it- the looks. Not as yellow as Akwaugo who slightly escaped from Albinism by the way- and definitely not as beautiful as well, but she had those eyes that men wouldn’t avoid, breast men could die for and a sexual appetite that would leave men gasping for breath one day and buzzing her number the next day.

It was 'sex at first sight' between her and Roy, she met him in Julius Berger staff club, flirted a little and they had ended up at the back of his car where she crewed his brain out. The next day he had begged her to move in with him and soon enough, she was his wife with conditions. She had enjoyed as much as Roy could give- a little extra from his colleague who paid for her to Bleep them- she was good at it. But not in all those times had she gotten anything as real as what Akwaugo has.

Her hand caressed her neck and she felt angry bile rose in her throat- that jewelry should have fit perfectly round her neck, she resented Akwaugo. What was she hiding? Why couldn’t she tell? Who was the man who had been caught in her charm that could give her such jewelry? Her mouth curled- with such man in her life she would buy herself some years of comfort now her first meal ticket was gone. She needed a replacement quick before the villagers start asking why she was yet to go back to the city. She would go back alright but she had to make a perfect comeback, the city of port Harcourt must not know that she had no source of income any more, if only she could find the one guy who would replace Roy- a richer man, in fact a very wealthy man like the invisible one that gave Akwaugo that expensive Jewelry.

*

No she didn’t pick a stomach bug and she doubted if it was malaria. She was afraid to think of the possibility of… Akwaugo rose from the toilet seat and walked back into the room she once shared with her husband- now solely hers. He had moved into the second room in the apartment.
She looked at the calendar on the wall, carefully went through the numbers she marked red- her monthly flow was supposed to come out since last week but she had remained as dry as an untarred road in dry season, the worst was she was having some of the signs she had read about.
She contemplated on telling Mezie about her feelings, Mezie would personally take her to the hospital the next morning. But what if it turned out not to be true- he would be heart broken and would hate her more.

She fetched a wrap of mint sweet, unwrap it and threw into her mouth. Ah…that would stop the nausea feeling and the sore taste in her mouth. She stretched herself on the bed and covered her legs with wrapper. She would not tell Mezie until she was sure, if it turns out Positive- it would change everything, Mazie would finally regain his pride and they could try to amend what was left of their union.

If it turns out true, then Morgan had left an unforgettable gift for her, something that would remind her of their one moment together. Morgan- what would he be doing now? Probably settling with ladies of his class, he may even be married and may be making passionate love with his wife while she punishes herself. Why did it even bother her what he would be doing? He was gone for good.

She finally slipped into a dreamless sleep, which was disturbed by snores from the other room

I'm looking at Mezie and Akwa and shaking my head and laughing in Bengali.

They are playing with fire.

What makes Akwa think that Mezie will not be put to shame and resent the child if it comes out looking like Morgan?

What makes Mezie (the lousy excuse for a man) that when Morgan finds out he has a child he won't come asking for it?

They are playing with uncertain variables as if it is constant k.

Anyhow...

immediate gratification of desires propel people to do the unthinkable. This definitely comes with late realization and probably, resentment

Chapter 8

Lagos

“Stock has been bullish in the past five months and that is a good this”

Morgan rubbed his neck, rolled his shoulders and relaxes his back on his big tall executive chair. The board meeting was taking longer than he thought it would- the meeting was necessary though, if Wilson beverages would be planted in South Africa, then the board had to decide based on the performance in Ghana.

“Yea but we were on the losing chart for eight months, eight solid months in Ghana…from the month of establishment” a board member said

“We were expecting that already; the company is still young in Ghana- we have not mastered the ground”

“But our products are not a new one, our depots in Ghana has been witnessing huge sales and Wilson beverages has been a household name there!”

Morgan scanned the serious- angry faces in the room, some were sweating even with the column floor mounted conditioner. They would have torn him to shred for bringing up the idea of planting a production company in South Africa “So why do you think we should abandon this idea Chief Olu?” He asked calmly

“You of all people should know Morgan, five months of breaking even after so long in Ghana is not enough to count that project a success and you want to take another risk in South Africa” spittle rained from the corner of Chief Olu’s mouth as he spoke.

“Five months of bullish stock- a consistence success I must say Chief…” there was murmuring of mix feelings which Morgan ignored “our company is doing well in Ghana irrespective of huge competitions…”

“I say we should give this sometime Chairman, let us make more progress in Ghana- let’s say two more years, then we can plant in South Africa” Another member suggested

“Exactly my point!” Chief Olu widened his eyes and threw his hands up “I lost a lot of money those years we struggled in Ghana, now things are beginning to look up over there- he is planning of splitting the company’s finances to birth another company we don’t know if it would see the light of the day” He gave Morgan a belittling stare “Sometimes I wonder if you are fit to seat on that chair as the CEO and the Chairman of this board! I have earlier suggested we should make someone else the chairman of the board while this boy remains the CEO” he eagerly waited for a support which didn’t come

“Well Chief, he still is the founder and has the highest Shares in this company, you can’t change the law” someone interjected

“Well, let him act like someone who has brains in his head and not some liquid sugar!” Chief Olu wished one of the members would offer to sell part of his share, all he needed was extra two million, four hundred and fifty shares to take the seat off Morgan’s Butt and becomes the Chairman.
Unfortunately, none pf the members wanted to sell at the moment and none were interested in what he was offering them individually.

“I understand your grievances Chief Olu, believe me I have considered every side to this idea and our performance so far in Ghana. However, I think the secretary has explained extensively the leverages we have over other competitors in Ghana and the chances we have in South Africa…” Chief Olu snorted “can we put this to vote?” Morgan continued, nods of agreement “Secretary please carry on with this”

Only nine out of the twenty-one board members voted in his favor. “I guess it will take a while before we move into South Africa then” he forced a smile, avoiding the victory glint on Chief Olu’s face “That settles it Gentlemen and ladies” he tapped on the polished wooden table pushed his chare backward as he stood on his feet “As usual- you will have reports sent to your different mails…we meet again by the end of this quarter, once again I apologize for gathering us in a short notice…”

“This meeting was unnecessary, you ended up wasting our time” Olu muttered

“And I am sorry for that also Chief, if you don’t mind coming to the club on Saturday, you can vent you anger on me while we play tennis” this drew laughter from the members who were also on their feet “That’s better…” Morgan joined in the laughter “Thank you so much Gentlemen and ladies” he walked out of the room, leaving his files to be brought to his office later by his secretary.

*

“Would you want me to cancel other appointments sir?”

Morgan removed his fingers from the window blind and walked back to his seat. He felt drained- that was what running the company does to him, yet he wouldn’t wish to do something else. It was a life he had built for years and as draining as it was, he wouldn’t deny the rewards and privileges seating as the CEO of that company has given him.

“Are they all gone?”

“Chief Olu is at the parking lot with three other members” his secretary neatly arraigned papers, files and placed a bottle of wilson’s water before him.

“Oh yes, I saw them from my window” He unscrewed the plastic bottle and belted down the content

“You should find a way to get that man to your side sir, he has followers in the board” she had her hands clamped together in front of her

Morgan threw the bottle in the trash can “Yet none of his followers trust his enough to allow him own the highest share, they would not sell part of their shares to him and that is what he want.”

“He is a difficult man sir, a cunny man too. But I think you can win and control him, he is not so smart”

“Yes Favor, Chief Olu is not so smart. I will meet him at the club on Saturday and I believe we can work things out”

His secretary nodded “The DSS appointment sir…you have less than an hour sir”

Can it ever get any easier? He sat and got his ass roasted by twenty-nine board members and in less than an hour, he would be seated in the DSS office for some bank transaction fraud bullshit! “Let me have a quick look at that letter again…and while you are at it, get all our recent transactions with Mobrit Bank”

“Yes sir”

“And get their managing director on phone” he yelled after his secretary “That bastard wants to play politics with me…I will soon find out those Pushing this” first it was the issue of unpaid taxes- a waver given to him by the former president. It took him almost a year to rectify, now- an alleged fraudulent bank transaction He knew what the whole thing was about, but he had put in years of sleeplessness and hard work to allow aggrieved competitors who had the backing of the presidency to pull him down, he was also a big player, if not bigger.

Others may call him an opportunist, but he only took the chance he got to make something out of his life. With both parents gone- one following the other two years later, he was thrown in to the world of hardship at the age of sixteen. Life gave him a chance when Chief Ojukwu took him to Abuja to live with his family. Seven years later, after his university and two years working for the Ojukwu family, he left to Canada for his Master’s degree.

That was it, he was alone- no home and no hope for the next meal, only a scholarship that didn’t cover accommodation. He met Melisa a month after he arrived Canada;

“I can see that our genius has no friend” she had met him seated by the fountain at the center of the school, reading “Do you ever do anything else apart from reading?”

“Yes, I work in the school library” he didn’t tell her that he sleeps there also, but she found out weeks later and insisted he moved in with her

“My parents won’t mind, anything that makes me happy is what they want”

Melisa fall in love with him almost immediately and provided everything for him, he- on the other hand helped her with school works. The day he lost his virginity to her, she came back from a party, drunk “Lets F*ck” she said. But he was not ready, never has been- not with Melisa “My Boyfriend is a dick head! He is screwing another girl!” he didn’t know she had a boyfriend till then “I want to f*ck you to get even!”

He was reluctant but she wouldn’t stop crying and whining. It ended as fast as it started, an act he wasn’t proud of, he was a novice but Melisa didn’t care.

“Daddy would want to meet you, I told him we are getting married” he didn’t want to get involved with her- not as a husband, but he would be an ingrate if he had rejected her proposal. She was his meal ticket, besides- almost every black guy he knew back then were either married to a white lady or going out with one, so he had carried on with the plan.

They got married after their graduation but their differences started getting on the way of the young marriage six months after, even with a baby on the way- their quarrel didn’t decrease. Melisa became clingy, irritable, blames him for every little thing. Each day that passed saw them disintegrating.

She only made him know about her health condition seven months into the pregnancy

“Why didn’t you tell me? Why did you get pregnant?” he had blamed himself for not being sensitive

“I want a child, a replica of me”

She had died few hours after giving birth, leaving him with a daughter and an inheritance.

“She wanted you to have it, for her child. We want to honor her last wish”

He couldn’t reject the money, he was a poor orphan who needed to break in to the world of entrepreneurship, and he had thrown his weight into building what his company was at the moment. At 46- he was satisfied with what he had achieved so far.

“The car is ready sir” his secretary announced

Morgan pulled himself from his chair “Take these things to the car, I will review then on my way” he glanced on his phone, a little disappointed.

He has had women warm his bed in the past, though not regularly, and it was just what it was- to satisfy sexual urges, none has amounted to anything serious. Akwaugo was the only woman who had made him come alive, she had stirred emotions that he was too scared to admit.

As he walked into his car, he wondered what she would be doing? Did she miss him or has she forgotten in a hurry? He had thought the memory of her would have faded as he settled to city life, but every night- in the comfort of his home, under his sheet, he thought of her- her skin so flawless, her eyes so deep like the ocean, her lips pink and sensual her smiles so amazing.

He remembered her suppressed moans as he thrust inside her tight vagina,

For the first time in years, a woman has reminded him how lonely he was.

*
Nnewi, Anambra

“My husband”

“Hmm?” he licked soup off his palm, carried the plate of soup to him lips and drained what was remaining. Akwaugo waited for him to drop the plate. She was sure now, in fact she had known since two days, but she wasn’t as enthusiastic as she thought she would.

“I am pregnant”

Mezie went still, “kedu ihe ikwuru kita? What did you just tell me?”

“I said I am pregnant…I am with child” her hands clamped on her laps

“I hieeee!!!” Mezie screamed “Ihe nwa Ome! It has happened o…” he exclaimed before he caught himself and brought down his voice “Are you sure?
How did you know?”

“I went to the hospital my husband, and they confirmed it” Akwaugo smiled broadly. She saw the sparkle in her husband’s eyes, the joy in his voice- he danced around, throwing one leg in front of another in a traditional dance moves.

Yes- her husband was finally happy, he has gotten what he wanted, his enemies would not mock him anymore and he could boldly speak among his Umunna.

But the gods were not sleeping, they had their dice cast, they were just starting the play.

Later that night she lay in his arms, for the first time in years. While he promised her heaven and earth “If it’s a boy ehn…I will kill cow for you, in fact I will bring down this house and build another big one inugo? I will buy you your own machine so you will be moving around this village and everybody will see Mezie’s wife…”

But her mind was on another man- she wondered if she should tell him about the pregnancy, just to thank him for the gift. What would he think of the news? Would he be excited? She however dismissed the thought, it would be better he didn’t know for he may want to come for the child one day. That would kill her and end her marriage with her husband, the villagers would make ugly stories with her husband and herself.

She remembered his steady eyes on her and fluttered

Oyi ona atu gi? Are you cold?” Mezie asked

“Mba, I am not cold”

“Don’t forget you are not to tell anybody that this pregnancy belongs to another, you vowed in front of the deity” he reminded her.
