National Association Of Private Schools Teachers Proposed Protest On Monday

Following the notice of the proposed nationwide protest by the National Association of Private Schools Teacher issued on Thursday July 9, 2020, the self acclaimed association national chairman has called on all the private schools teachers to come out en masse in all the states of the federation for the protest.

Due to the indefinite closure of schools as a result of the covid19 pandemic, many private schools have not been able to pay their workers salaries for the last three months. This has triggered some of them to call on the government for help. They claimed the have been abandoned by the government.

Is this association same with NAPST National Association Of Private School Teachers, heard they are presently requesting for 1000 naira from teachers. To get 20000naira from government.

So why exactly is god punishing us?

Why has he not punished china, Netherlands, Germany, Russia and many other countries. Why is god specifically punishing black countries?

They are really struggling. I know a lady that earns 40k and conduct lessons, earning total of 85k every month. The husband is not doing anything for the past 11months and she has been catering for the whole family of six.

She is passing through difficult times as lessons are note even going on. No parent has agreed for any private lesson for their kid at this time. Coro is big disruptor to lot of families.

Even me talking, I haven't seen anything since April.

Nothing will come out from this protest. All I see here is greediness on the side of the proprietors wanting to use their teachers to achieve their aim. Can't the owners of these school pay their teachers from the school fees they haven been collecting, even if it is half salary.
Secondly, I think this will be an Eye-opener for teachers not to put all their eggs in one basket. They should work on another legit source of income.
some of you will just open your mouths waaaaaa to spill out nonsense. I don't blame you probably cause you are still spoon fed or cause your business place is allowed to run, when schools open it should be the parents choice to allow their own kids to attend school or not. people are going out everyday, visit markets, enter buses, go to churches and do their businesses , so why not school? because Corona cannot catch people at the other places who can still bring it home to kids abi? but it can catch people at the school? please stop being selfish.
you think if you have a shop/business and it's locked you can afford to be paying your workers till business opens? and when your money finish you will go and sell your land to continue paying them abi?
it's people like you that are in government who only think one sided and insensitive because it doesn't affect them

Which fees have the students pay??
They haven't pay second term tution fee let alone the 3rd term, so where should the proprietors/proprietress get the salary from. You keep kwayet if you don't know how to contribute.

fratermathy:

There is no doubt that there are genuine reasons why schools should be closed in Nigeria. In fact, I agree with many of the arguments that people have made to defend this. However, there are many factors that must be considered before we conclude the matter. I'll just itemise them:

1. Covid-19 has no cure or vaccine and even if one comes up tomorrow, it'll realistically take more than 3 years to reach up to 30% of the Nigerian population. Corona is here to stay. There's no future utopia where the virus magically disappears. It won't go away next year so postponing resumption of schools means postponing the inevitable. In fact, by next year, for instance, the cases may be in the millions in Nigeria. Will schools be closed forever? Or you think our insensitive government will perform some magic?

2. Social distancing doesn't work in Nigeria. I don't know about your location but in mine, people go about their normal lives and there's nothing anyone can do about it. The children are still playing with their mates every day. Parents go to work and markets and may likely import the virus to their homes.

3. Children still go to churches or mosques (which are open in most places). Religious and social gatherings are known super spreaders of the virus.

4. So far, children are nowhere near vulnerable as far as Covid-19 is concerned. While this argument can be upended, it is a strong factor nonetheless. Children are not so much in danger as their teachers and the teachers are mature enough to protect themselves adequately.

5. Students in public schools in remote and riverine areas are struggling and therefore may face certain learning challenges if they stay out of school for too long. Many may lose interest in schools altogether. I have been to these places and I know how averse they are to education. Many simply go to school because their mates are going. Should they stay home for long periods, they may likely never resume whenever schools open (which, going by the logic of some concerns, can take more than 2 years).

6. Private school teachers have not been paid for months because, unlike the public sector, they have to work before they are paid. Furthermore, many of them have been organising lessons for miserly wages (this also contradicts why schools should be closed). Indeed, many of those who want schools to remain closed have means of educating their children effectively, forgetting the fisherman's child in Oporoza who either goes to school or hunts for bait worms.

7. Once again, corona is here to stay. There are many workarounds that can be easily adopted to curtail populated classrooms. We must either accept the reality of Covid-19 or simply all remain at home - no markets, malls, churches, mosques, work etc because no one is better or worse than schools as far as the virus is concerned. If you can afford homeschooling or online learning for your children, you should definitely go for it. However, what is good for Bernard is not necessarily good for Benetutukayo and it is nobody's fault that we have an irresponsible government that can't provide adequate infrastructure for times like this.

I am a realist in matters like this but there are factors that policy makers must consider even if schools must remain closed. Until the factors are appropriately pictured, we may be doing more harm due to our inability to see the wider picture. There are reasons why the lockdown didn't last in Nigeria. These are the same reasons why schools can't remain closed indefinitely.

you said it all bro. that's real wisdom

Stop generalizing. Not all schools collect huge sums of money as school fees. Private schools in the suburbs collect 20k as fees and still not all the children pay up. Now how would such school owners pay salaries. You guys talk like this because you have the opportunity of sending your children to schools on the Island or G.R.A etc.

Trust me if the school owners want to pay they will pay.... Even with 20k fees.... How much do they even pay staff self that they are refusing to pay salaries? It is a business and they should run it effectively... I repeat only mushroom schools will refuse to pay staff using covid as an excuse.... So they cannot manage to sustain the school for three months ? It is just so sad and we should all join hands in telling them the truth.... They are all wicked souls cashing in on the economic situation of things to cheat staff

Re: Private Schools Teachers To Protest On Monday Over Nonpayment, School Closure by farady(m): 1:36pm On Jul 12, 2020
I think it's the lack of preparedness on the part of govt, to put in place all the necessary precautionary measures in public schools at both federal and state levels, that is causing all these. More than 80% of the private schools can meet up with the requirements compared to less than 20% for the public schools.

Whether we believe it or not, coronavirus is here to stay with us. So just as offices and other business outfits are adjusting their work environment, the govt should put same amount of zeal and commitment to see that the necessary measures are in place in public schools.

This situation will call to question how most of these private schools owners run their schools and their exploitative tendencies.

The government that plan on moving forward with elections are not endangering lives?
The government that locked us up for over two months with nothing to eat did not endanger lives?
The day Nigerians start thinking out of the scope that has been laid out for them is the day we will start moving in the right direction, till then let us all be the subdued animals in the zoo

The owners of schools should pay teachers from their pockets? Why are Nigerians this dumb and insensitive, do you think every student pays their school fees at once? Or don't you know that these teachers are usually paid monthly from the stipends that the students pay. Maintenance and development is included in this stipend! Why do you think the federal government opened up some sectors? It is mainly because funds to sustain the economy was not forthcoming and they risked going broke, but they did not put these private school teachers in mind when they were doing this and wonder how they were fending for their families.

Pathetic lots!

You are minding these idiots you have quoted? Especially the first fool. I've never seen a comment so dumb, yet he had the mind to call teachers illiterates. Dunno how many people can read, let alone write in his entire family.
Anyway, it's not his fault. I think Nairaland is fast becoming the greatest concentration of Nincompoops that you can find anywhere. Of course with the exception of great minded scions that we still have here. They're not many if you ask me.

What is actually going on? You are holding down the future and destinies of Nigerian students on account of Covid-19 while political and religious activities are blossoming and lately the restrictions on interstates travels relaxed in the same country. Mind you, economic activities are also going on in our local markets undisturbed.
Let's be honest enough, there is something happening in the education sector that the government is not telling us.
Recently ASUU applauded FGN for the continued closure of school. I never expected the contrary from them because their salaries are guaranteed even now that they are on "their annual festival of strike".
I hold the view that if the ministers of education and health cannot fashion a way to get the schools opened, they better resign their positions for incompetence.
Countries with heavy burdens of covid-19 are gradually getting their citizens back to school and we cannot afford to sacrifice the future of our nation on the selfish desires of some few individuals.

So the lives of kids should be put at risk cos someone wants to earn 30k abi? Teachers are making money from private teaching at d moment ....unless you don't know how to hustle as a teacher oo.

So sad that an association like this exist, yet not much have been known until now and I doubt if all the private teachers are members of the said group.
This group seems cheated but am curious about the dues that they have been collecting since Inception, can't something come out of it as first aid.
Teachers are people with reasonable faculty, can't they opt for soft skills and reposition self for job in areas that are now working or go for trade or revive their handy work.
No profession can replace teaching but for now, we are faced with the reality so every teacher from onset should have ask apart from teaching what can I do? How long will I continue to teach??
Life for teachers will never be the same again after this period except for those that have refuse to learn lessons
Lastly, as a private school teacher, you never had an agreement to be on pay spread, so expect nothing from school owners, school owners are also figuring how to survive and will not take your own burden since the source of their income is also close
Rather than lamenting, drop your status, go to farm if you have any or passion, attached to someone and learn handy work, learn ICT skills and any soft skills, declare your financial status to lessen pressures for this time is still far from over so use it wise and even stop teaching even if school resumes

You want understand the plight of working in a private school. The firrt thing is you wont have the time to do any other thing except doing theirs. You Dont have the luxury of time to do anything imagine one going to work at 6am and closing by 6pm. What time do you have left to do other things. And not that the salary is ok. Our government is not not helping private school teachers.
