Not really. The European clubs are exhausted and have nothing to prove. Non-UEFA clubs want to make a name for themselves and would benefit more from the prize money.

* Have nations league and make AFCON are quadrennial tournament. Or
* Have NL and scrap CHAN. Players based in Africa should focus on club competitions.

Option 1 is much better imo. Can even do option 2 as well and eliminate CHAN altogether so as to not clog up the African football calendar.

An African equivalent is long overdue. This "friendly" tournament helps to emulate a high stakes competition, akin to the world cup, and as result, European sides are improving much more rapidly.

It is all by design. If they reject too many (let's say more than 60%) applications, Africans would be less inclined to apply thus leading to lower revenues from application fees.
