babaegun:EMONCMS actually uses MYSQL database with PhP engine and apache webserver . The the api calls are all json . and you can qury the the Data using MQTT |
Barezzi:Incase you have not come across the DIY tesla streamer has done very good job in explaining simple terms use of fuse / breakers etc. - for fuses see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bFTK6c8iqXI&list=PLID-GiwIm8LO5FVtQgBDXfoWxuExG5yqC&index=5 His other videos are also great for D.I.Y enthusiast hwo have no professional background in electrical Engineering |
battleaxe:You are wiring it slightly wrong Unless I am reading it incorrectly . Can you mark the MCB coil and power inputs separately .If following is not clear I will draw it time permitting in next few days and send it MCB has total 6 terminals Say A1, A2 - Coil terminal Allows the MCB to become on when supplied with 230 V PH ( A1) and N ( A2) Terminal L1 and L2 are NO rated to carry Nominal rated current at AC -7B duty Terminal L3- L4 are NC rated to carry Nominal rated current at AC -7B duty Please remember there is no Make before break so You cannot use this as changeover otherwise it might short inverter i/P and o/P for a sustained arc on inductive loads like motor Only one of them can be used - based on your usage scenario For your case one primary contactor will be needed on Grid side to avoid short circuit |
babaegun:Unfortunately they do not have open protocol that I am aware . EMONCMS uses JSON calls on the API . Google srecah turned up nothing . I got fed up with crappy software and shoddy practice of charging extra for remote monitoring by mainly USA based manufacturers like morningstar and extremely to shift to Chinese stuff . I have a ATS from company called powergen - Costs 73 USD only but comes with full windows software and remote monitoring. Anything close to that from established brands is upwards of 500 USD. |
dejidotun2000:Yes both all type of connections, Serail , USb and even connected to my remote display unit no issues . Can confirm that Zinox also uses it at many locations Are your inverters serial ( the cable is like network cable at inverter end and DB-9 -9pin Serial ) The you will need a genuine Serial to USB converter - in My experience the prolific PL 2303 chipset works without problems . See the link For inverters after 2016 they are both serial and USB - Use the cable that came with inverter https://www.amazon.com/Trendnet-TU-S9-USB-Serial-Converter/dp/B00BL697VA |
Barezzi:You can do same with emoncms. see my dashboard variations - You can configure it your way in half an hour once the basic setup is running The yellow one is for my kids and wife . They know very well based on battery charge status when to use TV or washing machine etc. The moment the pointer is in Orange they swtichoff non essential stuff such as AC , TV , etc.
|
Barezzi:I have used Prag , Sukam, Mpower etc at sometime of other and also familiar with Hight end units like SMA , Schinder etc. Unless netmetering becomes legal in Nigeria it does not make sense to spend r times the money on AC coupled system with attend losss of efficiency I am basically running the two inverters full time in DC mode with the Third inverter and solar keeping the battries topped up. via NEPA or 7.5 KVA DG . The way it is setip is the load is divided in following priority - if one is not sufficient the next source is used to make upo the shortfall Solar , NEPA , Gen, Battery Apart from the High end systems ( mainly german) I have not come across any budget inverters which give you power sharing options . In the price of one Conext XW 6848 I can buy 6 to 7 units of Axpert with paralleling , remote monitoring and have cash to spare ![]() Now if NEPA becomes 65 Naira per unit and you decide to go completely offgrid with the whole house including conditioning , pumping , water heaters etc. or DISCO's allow you sell excess Solar then it is different story |
All my units in one picture Ignore the wiring mess. Installing new monitoring software on my Raspbery Pi

bigrovar:YES Voltronic is the OED - MPP SOLAR makes some of the units based on their design in Taiwan and gets boards for some specially the CE marked units of grid tied inverters for Europe I guess ss . For a long time I also thought MPP Solar was the OEM but then when I ordered remote display unit from MPP SOLAR ( Zinox does not sell it in Nigeria) I noticed the box it cam in carried Voltronic label - I guess they forgot to remove it On close inspection even the PC is marked with Voltronic . Considering the history , and product lines it is anybod'ys guess who is the actual maker . By the way the reason MPP solar is so much mentioned on the forums is that the company has horrible support in technical. They refuse to support you without getting serial no Picture from you. Now I know whay they want to support only their own products and not solt by voltronic to other CKD unit sellers . |
bigrovar:Considering you get charge controller , Inverter and AC charger in one unit at the price of only Charge controller from Outback or Midnight solar it does not mater if you don't use some of the parts |

Barezzi:There is plenty of information just ask whatever you need . A very little known fact is these inverters ( both Ipower and Genex and other not so well known) are made by a single company called Voltronic Power - Sold in South Africa as Axepert and in Europe /Latin America as MPP solar The company is as big as APC and very well known brand having more than 15 % global market of Hybrid inverters . https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YCXTHiurLbc It has a loyal following in many countries and fan base . Personally I am using them in parallel 5 KVA x 2 to even run 2 AC's and my washing machine without any major issues . The failures you see in the market is because of bad installers/Design hence Ipower insists on complete system. There limitation is 60 V DC and nominal failures are in capacitors . This only happens when you use a charge controller than their own which tries to equalise batteries or the ones called battery desulphators. I learned this the hard way - This has been corrected in new models after 2015. Also there are many models looking identical depending on the importer ( they have identical models with PWM/MPPT , ac Charge capcity 50 Amp , 60 AMp or even 80 Amp). Like all systems you should use your design tools referring to datasheet other components to build a correct system They even now have a 1 .00 power factor inverter ( 5 KVA inverter does 5 KW load) and max 140 Amp charging ( 80 from Solar and 60 from Grid). All this in 700 USD is not possible in any inverter . The price and size is kept low by moving teh AC and DC protections outside the inverter hence the need to correctly design the system for more info see - http://www.voltronicpower.com/ OR http://www.mppsolar.com/ Wbr Anil My system for info ( all main inverters are Ipower) Self Consumption DC coupled Whole House system 10 KVA , 400 AH , 5600Wp with backup 7.5 Diesel Generator 5 KVA x 2 Voltronic ( Axexpert) in parallel- , 1 x 5 KVA Voltronic standalone as charge controller and charger with remote panel 8 x 315 Wp- Yahi Mono on Inverter 1 , 6 x 250 Wp Ritek ,on Inverter 2 , 4 x 255 Wp on Inverter 3 , 200 W x 3 on Make skye Blue MPPT midnight solar PV junction and 8 x 200 AH 48 V Flooded lead Acid , BMV 702 , 450 AMP DC bus with 250 and 125 Amp fuses on +ve -ve and midpoint from Blue Sea systems with 200 Amp DC breaker Powergen Self wired ATS with 7.5 KVA 3 ph Generator - starts based time of day and SOC to offset the battery load emoncms ( work in progress) - http://emoncms.org/ghatikar & PVOUT https://pvoutput.org/list.jsp?sid=51733, Inveters montioring via ICC and Lucibus Intel NCU PC , Ra Pi 3 , IO gear wireless USB , Current cost ,UK monitoring Total power and critical loads and logging to Measureit Awaiting delivery - Powergen, Italy 3 PH 48 V 60 Amp Battery charger |
bigrovar:I have four of them . Normally 35 watts running on Battery on Avrage can reach upto 65 Watt on full load . See the datasheet And these are actual measured values I have been running these inverters for last 5 years without any major issues and when it comes to price point nothing in market can beat them . Anybody who has questions on these can feel free to ask them. .

Contrary to the popular practice of using a changover cwitch between inverter and NEPA the actual use of Inverter is different than a generator. The NEPA goes to inverter and then flows out to your loads ( The inverter senses availability of NEPA and automatically connects loads to NEPA) In your case you have to split the DB wiring to possible inverter loads and non inevrter loads ( ask the electrictian if you cannot do it should be fsairly easy to modify the busbar or remove the looping) So in your case all house loads upto PEAK loading of inverter ( normally double the rating of nominal check also the bypass relay rating of inverter ) can be connected to inverter . The MCB contactor coil will be fed from NEPA with a timer . The moment NEPA fails the contractors drop keeping only essential loads like light and DSTV /TC /Computer to the output of ineverter . ( identical to a large UPS for your computer) now based on your judgement you can manually bring some loads on or off based on your needs. The beauty of the contactor I suggested is it self resets the position on every changeover of NEPA no no risk of loading inverter on the next failure even if you had kept it on For example if you leave the Air Con MCB in ON ( manual)positiontion and forget to Put it to Auto next time NEPA fails it will still switch off It has automatic returning to AUTO position on every coil energization See marked in the Blue If you want further automation you can use 4P MCN ( 2 NO and 2 NC) NO for NEPA and NC for inverter automatically changing to inverter based on SOC or time of day

mank1234:Even available on Konga or Jumia or local market http:///programmable-digital-timer-switch-relay-control-220v-16a-2610886 http:///water-heater-programmable-auto-switch-timer-220v-25a-3110204 |
mank1234:I prefer to USE the Single Pole MCB and contractor built in instead of one single contactor. This allows you to force individual loads or circuits to stay on NEPA or inverter if you choose or switch by timer based on your usage .e.g. weekdays keep fridge on Inverter as teh afternoon load is small when kids at school. Weekends Frdidge off but TV on inverter . Added advantage is you just replace the existing MCB no Seprate DB requited or create a DB with Rows of MCB saving space and money https://www.aliexpress.com/item/MKWCT-25M-Manual-220V-240V-Universal-Home-Household-AC-Contactor-Modular-Modulus-25Amps-2P-2-Two/32671904971.html? |
bodeface:See The attached. Combiner Box- Local market - DC MCB - From Seller on Forum, VPD ( surge protect) from Aliexpress. total cost 20 % of Midnight solar - I have midnight solar PV Junction box also and while much easier to work and can combine three ( even 6 or 12 models available) banks this setup also works without issues for 150 V DC unearthed system . If your CC or inverter needs negative eratherd then Midnight solar is recommended ( remember to use use 25 mm2 or larger cables to link the MCBS's to avoid local heating or use a Cu busbar cut into shape .

efuro:A 10 mm2 cable will loose 4.6 mv per amp per meter How much is the current ?. if the shunt of the meter is 200 MV then 0.2 drop is in meter itself .see attached. Meanwhile 0.5 v is 2 % difference which is well within tolerance level of measuring instruments ( normally they are class 5 ) if you want accurate readings you need class one meter like fluke Multi meter or hight quality meter ( e g. BMV 700 e) panel meter .

bigrovar:Some of the better designed inverters like Prag or Ipower have a power saving mode to solve this issue They switch of the inverter mode and capacitors etc to reduce consumption. If I remember correctly Prag uses 100 Watt in normal mode and 35 watt in power saving. Every four second and so they send a pulse to check if the load is above rated value say 60 watt . It it is more they fire up the inverter . The problem with power saving mode is things like LED bulbs don't trigger it and keep on flashing

efuro:I have Luminous and enjoying over 30 months now still going strong . Top and equiliaze them atleast once in 3 months and dont discharge more than 50 % of rated capacity 200 AH x 50 V is 10 KWh at C20 rate ( 400 watt considering 20 % loss in inverter and cabling) you should use them max for 10 Hours at 400 watt load ( not 5 days !)anything more and you are crossing 50 % dod drastically reducing their life They are rated for 1200 Cyles for 50 % DOD and only 500 at * 80 % DOD , if you were discharging them fully expect them to last less than a year Also little known fact is the capacity of battery reduces under heavy load a 200 Ah bank will deliver more like 170 AH for loads over C20 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peukert%27s_law Anil |
emmaniche:My suggestion is to use one of the hybrid inverters like ipower which can be monitered with software developed by user groups. e.g. see my setup . The other inverters like SMA /schinder/Voltron are all expensive to start with . That way you can control also http://emoncms.org/ghatikar With a software like ICC you can even change the time the inverter uses solar and not NEPA e.g. during weekdays use solar not Nepa weekend USE nepa even if solar is available ( to avoid prematurely discharging batteries) CCTV will not give you control and too expensive to continuously monitor because of high data rate used of video feed over internet |
2baga:LED bulbs from Philips ( e27 Base) are available in Emab Plaza at 1800 NGN each for 6 or 9 w ( 40 and 60 watt equivalent) . The shop is near the gate on right side. I forgot the name. Light output good but not same CRI as Hue but almost matches the concentration mode color |
I am Looking for a 40 AMP 48 V DC 3 phase( 440 V) supplied battery charger Ideally should have only taper charging . Anybody has encountered one in Nigeria or direct to me to someone who can build one ? - This is to ensure the battery charger loads my generator evenly Alternatively 3 identical chargers rated to work in parallel with 10 to 15 amps rating for 48 V DC wbr Anil |
idsolar:Quanta for AGM /GEL ( i am using in office) Luminous for flooded( long life) - I am using at Home |
bigrovar:ECHO works but you have to hack it for it to tell the time correctely - I have both google home and Echo and Google home is better for andoid chromecast ( media applications) Echo is good with Harmony , Hue and yeelight .and samsung hub USE a NAS for data . personally I use Synology 2 bay 4 TB x 2 (Raid 1) . It has it's own server for plex. I also use XBMC but prefer plex as it syncs to tablet and xbox al the watched status and has better integration - ( but you have to pay a yearly subscription) XBMC is good for direct streaming |
Barezzi:Nice to see the study on the website. I am one of the authors. Although the study is aimed at mainly grid power of solar pv |
samnaija:200 Ah requires max 20 to 25 Amps C10 rate batteries. Anything more and you will damage the battries unless the charger can adjust current and monitor temperature . If you are willing to order from Aliexpress I can send you link for a very good charger . or altrenatively look on this website and find a way to order http://www.meanwell.com/product/inverter/inverter01.html I found it very difficult to locate a good charger at that capacities as normally it is integrated in inverters |
abunafiu:I Have personally tried following air conditioner controllers for automation and love the ambilight followed by broadlink followed by Tado - too lazy to put links but google it they are easily found. On the lights I primary use philips hue with logitech harmony and amazon alexa works wonderfull. Personally I found zwave too much headache. My samsung smartthings is far from smart and constantly looses connectivity with my projector screen controller and it's own socket too many variables in Zwave and not consistent echo system I found the broadlink platform quite good specially their power socket which keeps a history of the power use and current use for any appliance. Very Good to monitor fridge and AC http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Broadlink-SP2-EU-Smart-Home-Wireless-Remote-Control-Electrical-Smart-Plugs-Sockets-By-app-control-switch/32655943437.html I also use the battery monitor to check on battery from bedroom - found good to be 40-60 metrs in open adn 10-20 meters through one wall http://www.aliexpress.com/item/NEW-MHF-120S-Wireless-DC-Voltmeter-Ammeter-Power-Meter-0-120V-100A-Shunt-MHF120100S/32611336909.html |
Barezzi:The setup looks enviable. Few thoughts 1. The battery is too small for 4.6 KVA load unless that is your peak load for bedroom /lights - 400 AH is hardly 10 KWH at 50 % DOD at 3 KW it is not even 3 hours of runtime in the night . I have exat seame battery size and I can run 800 watts for one whole night ( which includes 300-500 Watt of bedroom AC) 2. You might want to consider running the inverter in hybrid solar mode during daytime to maximize that 6 KWp Solar panels solar production . In that case I suggest to use changeover along with DOD cut off to keep non essential loads connected to grid if available on days when solar production is not enough otheriwse one angr better half 3. You might consider reducing the solar panel size and investing that amount in energy efficiency ( long term effects will be similar) specially as NEPA bill also comes down. Solar prices will always drop for next few years and you can always add more 1.5 KW diakin or LG AC is around 200,000 NGN but can run on as low as 300-600 WATT. LED bulbs ( i found the Yellights and Philips both reliable )- The yeelights are specially good at less than 20 USD in addition allow dimming and color change from you rsmartphone - http://www.gearbest.com/smart-lighting/pp_361555.html
