pranil , @jazzman2 , DUNKA , Oshomo12 , DMerciful , dapsyra , @damola1

Abeg who go help me successfully install am, based on experience of doing same before. Is there anything else to buy like the BMS?

I got; 12, and also I have a Magnum 4KVA and Outback 3kva, all 24V.

Specs of battery are:

Capacity: 210Ah
Height: 147 mm
Width: 429 mm
Length: 147 mm
Bolt Size: M8
Voltage nominal: 3.2V
Charge voltage cut-off: 3.6V
Discharging cut-off: 2.5V
Chemistry: LiFePO4

My location is: Ikeja.
I am envious. cry

Pls. share on how did you get them, LCL cargo, airfreight any customs issues SONCAP etc.

Can your vendor supply to Abuja ?. my email is anil_ghatikar@yxxxx.com

It is must to not only install BMS to balance the battries to but a DC contactor to disconnect batteries in case of overcharging/undercharging to protect your precious investment . The Lion will have no absorb curve but have to sit at charge condition till the BMS can balance the cells

Are these ATL cells ( based on blue color) normally the advisable charge and discharge limits are C/2 ( 100 amps) in your case for 2000 cycles and up life cycles

I would suggest something like this where you can track the battery using mobile phone - https://www.ev-power.eu/Battery-Management/BMS123-Smart/123-Smart-BMS-Complete-Set-4-cells-with-Bluetooth-4-0.html

As far as I am aware Yinglee does not sell for retail market except through approved installers.

Can the forum share contact details . I am looking for double sided panels since last two months ( the LG ones are 130 K each for 300 watt) and Solarworld seem to have vanished from market

Yingli also has Bifacil panels and is Global leader in twincell

I am looking for - http://www.yinglisolar.com/en/products/monocrystalline/panda-bifacial-60cl/

Quote from - http://www.eco-business.com/news/why-two-faced-solar-panels-are-a-bright-idea/"

Yingli’s bifacial modules, known as the TwinMax series, were launched last year, and are made using the company’s special technology, known as Panda cells. These use phosphorous, rather than boron, to treat the silicon so that it can conduct electricity by up to 10 per cent more efficiently than others."

PRAG 48 - V ( grren color) 5 KW inverter user manual

Need user manual or at least battery charging Voltage selection page /table urgently where the pot positions explained.

I am replacing the office batteries and cannot find the manual anywhere !

Prag seems to have stopped supplying this inverter and replaced with a Hybrid MPPT

HAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!, in this buhari era, kai..this man no like me,
though you have a point, max instantaneous harvest i hv seen is 1290w and abt 41amps , so its likely the additional 2 x 250w panels will generate additional 10 to 13amps....since my placement isnt optimal. total 50 to 54amps, wch is still below the 60amps rating of the CC.

would be very glad if i can revive these batteries, am hopeful i would.
think most of the damage was done this present rainy season/bad weather, since in good weather i generate 7kwh, and use abt 2.5kwh daily, so within 3days, the excess 4.5kwh x 3 would try to keep the batt bank happy
I second the addition of panels and not running fridge on batteries -

The CC will never get cooked with the addition of Panels - the recent trend is to add between 1.1 to 1.5 times the rated current to cater for cloudy days In case additional harvest is generated the CC limits it's current to max rated - Only draw back is on really sunny days you are wasting the harvest
Also if you run CC on the limit all the time you might shorten the life but I guess 5 years from Now you will have much bigger panels and CC based on the trend in the solar industry What is you might observe is also called clipping which is additional ripple but not serious issue unless you are using one of the sensitive european brands

In my own House, I am using a Victron 150/45 amps on a solar bank of ( 2440 w- 305 x cool without any temperature warning

Beware though except midnight classic if you exceed the VoC ( more panels in series) it is short cut to white smoke from CC ( the caps blow almost immediately )

&bigrovar, whats the size of ur solar array?..i see u hv only 2 units 12v battery..and your load appears tobe even more than mine

nice point gents.
part of the problem was the fridge, hving a 130w energy nameplate, but clocking in at 190w on a wattmeter, it was while trouble shooting that i made that discovery...the extra 60w x 8.5hrs is over 500w lost daily, i initially tot my consumption was about os less than 2kwh, based on the 130w x 8hrs + the other small loads, thus with my 7kwh daily generation, i hv 5kwh to feed the battery bank.

am considering this option of programming the fridge to run at night, thus hving all the energy produced during the day go towards charging the batts. has anyone tried this unconventional approach,
i have 6 x 250watts 24v panels on a 60amp epsolar CC, i dont thinki can add an additional 500w to the panel bank, as that may exceed the rating of the CC, n upgrading the CC to 80amps isnt a viable option now..based on funds.
will take the fridge offline for 3 - 5days and allow the batterys to be fully charged, may adopt this strategy at 2wk intervals till funds are available to do more/the weather improves.

i also hv a desulphator hooked permanently to the system
Lead acid batteries should not be left in partial discharge for more than 24 hours to ensure long life ( the full charge cycle also included BULK ( full rated current) Absorb and then float if possible. ( Trojan Carbon is exception to this as it can handle partial SOC

If the panels can barely top up the batteries over 6/8 hours then absorb cycle is missed and you will feel the reduced lifetime
Which means for a typical day your batteries should at least exist bulk by 2 pm to remain on absorb for next 2-4 hours ( bulk is at C10 or C20 ) absorb currents are, much lower. Typically absorb is lower currents but at least 2- and max 5 times the bulk duration

Then go for Prag as it had good user feedback. Search for Richmond previous post on this inverter. Good value for money. May God open more doors for you cheesy
I can second the Prag solution. I have a Prag 5 KW /6.5 KVA running for 4 years now without being switched off except Xmas in office

Handels the LED lights ( 1 .5 KW) laser printers, Photocopiers and one AC without any issue. My earlier SUKAM used to make loud fan noise on the same load and I chose PRAG as the FAN comes on only when boost charging.

The only model I know in market which is rated at 3 times rated surge power

Also, Has a power saving mode so You can throw it in Power saving when not using to allow it to charge batteries when NEPA is available without depleting batteries

But it is also climbed in price now that I checked on Konga 550 K

Often the most economical fallback position is to use your generator for a few hours to tide you over those cloudy no/low sunlight days - if your inverter is slow charging (under 30amps DC), then consider getting a transformerless DC power supply (aka Telecomms charger) - you might need to modify it though to put out a higher than preset voltage suitable for proper battery charging in sync with your inverter.

A better alternative if money is not an object is the Axpert type e.g Zinox IpowerPlus inverter often showcased here by Pranil - the 48v version can put out up to 60amps DC- we use it in our family house to recharge a depleted 48v 200ah bank within 5 hours to battery float/nearly 100% full and the inverter is under 300k - this plus a solid mid size petrol generaror under 200k will give you a reliable backup/fall back position under 500k - even better if you already have a good diesel/petrol/gas powered generator at home.

In my experience I prefer the transformerless DC charging sources because they are more power efficient and appear to put a ligher load/less strain on small/mid size generators. I vividly remember my 8kw generator groaning painfully under the weight of my transformer based mustpower inverter trying to charge at 40amps meanwhile it carries the Zinox transformerless at 60amps without any hiccups.

Hoping to hear from the house if there are other solid transformerless DC chargers capable of >=60amps DC and sufficiently high voltage to charge a flooded battery bank.
I am doing, in fact, the same a more advanced version

1- 5 x 2 10 KVA Ipower in parallel on battery bank for 4 AC's +Washing machine and dryer Charged with power gen 2.5 KW 3 phase charger - plus 3 KW Solar through built-in MPPT - rarely more than 2 Ac's are on but the peak capacity is designed when children or house help unknowingly will switch on W/C , dryer, and AC - The system simply switches off on Battery low voltage ( set at 49.5 V)

The other set is Victron 5 KW/ 2.5 KW solar with supplying critical load, fridge plus lighting computer TV etc. - Since the bank is shared the critical loads are backed up till as the battery is never depleted below 50 % due to charger and gen combo When battery is full the Ipower inverters kick in again

the gen is on AUTOstart with Victron Venus GX and self-made ATS switch control panel

My research for LIon is to change Victron to its independent bank. But looks like I will have to wait till prices drop. ( no space for Lead acid)

I have 3 chargers 48 V -20/ 50 Amp single phase in case somebody is interested in buying. I bought a high-efficiency charger and hence three are redundant - I am using this now The PowerGen charger - http://www.batterychargerpowergen.eu/en/prodotti-alta-frequenza/ - 90 % efficiency and available up to 200 amps

In case somebody wants to buy - current price links are below - make a reasonable offer

One is with pulse and battery recovery 48 V 20 Amps perfect for 200 AH - https://www.aliexpress.com/snapshot/6716059717.html

Another is pure taper charging which works also as power supply - perfect for 400 AH or higher - similar to this - but 50 Amps with normal cable and UK plug was 268 USD when I bought it last year
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Lead-acid-Battery-Charger-48-Volt-10-Amp-EU-plug-with-XLR/32693316126.html

The third is actually from a reputed manufacturer - mean well ( expertize in electronics is needed for this as It has control and set point pins which need to be wired)

In the interest of sharing pls. find attached my comparison of LIon batteries ( which can be leaglly imported into Nigeria) and lead acid

The transport costs are approximated to the higher side. All battery prices are from manufacturers with direct quotes

Conclusion - Unless NERC increases unit rates of makes net metering legal. LEAD ACID comes out winner

The only exception is Smplifi USA who claim to have more than 10,000 Cycles life at rated capacity

there was a time i gave serious thought to such a setup but later decided against it for
various reasons. my experience these past few weeks may force me to give it a re-think.
I considered the wind here in Abuja for my House few years back - Even got an Anemometer ( wind speed measure). I could hardly get 1-3 m/s best times of the day.

if you look at wind speed versus power ratio for most of the turbines you will realize that best speeds are above 6 ms normally 10 -14 m/s

At low wind speeds, the cost per KWh was working out to be outrageous

Wind speeds throughout Nigeria on average are 4-8 m/s unless very near to coast or on top of hill

Below is a very good site for Nigeria wind in case you are considering wind energy

To do the test, you basically hook up each cell to precision dc power supply through a coulomb or energy meter like the trimetric or victron energy meters. But before then, you will have to drain each cell to zero SOC state, which is at 2.5v resting voltage after 24hrs. Set the bench supply to constant current mode @ 0.5C rate. Set an over-voltage cutoff at 3.65V and allow it to charge up until the voltage reaches 3.65v and cuts off. The energy meter should be able to read off how much AH put into the cell. As a confirmation, modify the setup and discharge the cell through the energy meter to a load resistor to 2.5v after resetting the energy meter.
The seller has not quoted the Max charge and discharge current. The cells pre 2015 were all low rated ( mostly 50 Amps) ( 2.5 KW on 48 V max)

Please check that. Also cycle life was low ( 1500-1600). Nowadays cells with 5000 cycles are available.

Herwin ( china ) gave me a quotation of 1900 USD exworks of brand new for 10 KWH (48 V) including BMS and assemled system - I have also posted the freedomwon pricing earlier

The used ones are coming to almost 2000 Pounds for 48 V plus you have to use cables, MCB, fuses etc.

If you are looking for 24 V Soladin in Ghana is selling Lithium Ion assemblies with high current rating

as for temperatures, recall that earlier in the year i did a comparison between the conventional (ariston)

I definitely believe you . there is no doubt in mind about the advantages . In India most of the big cities the town planners have made it mandatory for new building spurring faster adoption

Seriously looking at the solarshop flat plate collector as my further research showed me that it is Grundfos OEM brand made in China. I have serious respect for Grundfos as a brand . The price is a deterrent though at 600 K it is worth 25,000 Units of Nepa which the back of envelope calculations say worth heating 2000 Ltrs of water by 10 DEG

dunka,
plumbing does not need to be a headache for you when it comes to solar water heating.
first of all, get the package and measure the total height of the assembly, i.e from the top
of the water heater tank to the foot of the frame carrying it. add one or two feet to this value.
that would be the clearance from the bottom of the main water tank to the top of the water
heater tank.
after installing the water heater, run your hot water lines direct from the hot water outlet to
the inlet of your existing electric water heater inlet. use a t-connection copper tube. You only need to bore a little hole from outside your bathroom to gain access to the existing plumbing.use the t-connection to introduce the hot water into your bathroom.

Oga Pranil, after all your previous rantings about the supposed "Ilegality" of using grid-tie inverters in an off-grid system, you are now dreaming of implementing an AC-coupled system using the same grid-tie inverter (in this case microinverters hard-coupled to PV panels)?
You are trying to implement a variation of an off-grid, AC-Coupled system with grid-tie inverters called a "GRID-FREE" system, yet you argue that grid-tie inverters must inject into the national grid. Please explain to the forum how you plan to stabilize the national grid and also show us all the NEC / NERC code compliance certificates and permits that must be issued to you by our beloved NEPA ...sorry Eko Disco....
smiley you have every right to call me out .

I only pointed out the dangers both technical and legal and left the choice to consumers in the absence of any regulation on GRID Tie since the community is full of D.I>Y enthusiast who might lack the knowledge to make a suitable decision . May be it was misunderstood

F.y.i. in my case is I am using a islanding relay and a Em24 Energy meter to ensure that the grid export is prevented along with PV assitant and a Venus GX If you want I can send you my discussion with Victron ,EVpower and ,d Soladin on applying Microinverter.

Even Victron has not done it before and I am trying to test a solution

Nice going! I'd been dreaming of such panels. Didn't know they actually exist already. Let's hope they make their way into our market soon.

The numbers seem fantastic though
I have a Victron Bidirectional Quattro( multi) so I am planning to try using a small Grid tie Inverter with solar panels and a current sensor - See atttached PDF -

The sensor can be similar to this -https://www.ev-power.eu/Measure-Test-Tools-1-1/Current-Monitoring-Relay-PRI-52-AC-0-5A-25A-CE.html#tab2

A soladin or APS grid inverter will be ideal choice ( 1 KW to 2 KW) -

http://www.mastervolt.com/products/solar-inverters/soladin-1000-web/

APS- http://www.apsmicroinverter.nl/

The idea is that whenever the current sensor senses the Current flowing from PV panels to Multi or from Multi to PV panels the sensor after 1 min will switch off the Powercontactor feeding the water heater/Boiler - The contractor timer waits for 10-20 min and resets if there is no current flow then the water heater remains connected till the current sensor switches it off

the idea being that in daytime the solar PV inverter will directly feed power to water heater. After midday when the heater gets thermal cutoff there is no power draw from heater the excess energy is fed back through multi to loads and battery

You can set timers( time of Day) and even a bypass switch to feed the heater directly from Multi in winter or night if some top up heat is required.

Alternatively, a time of the day timer can be fitted to disconnect heater in the evenings /night to prevent draw from batteries ( in case your inverter is not passing the grid to the heater)

Since the grid tie inverters have efficiencies between 95-97 % you are using the full yield and compared to the DC heating element you can locate your panels anywhere and heater anywhere in the house as long as they are connected at AC side

Also, the solar panels can be smaller say 500 watts ( set current control higher than the difference of Panel average yield and heating load) OR

They can be much larger ( set current control or a lower value say 1 to 2 amps)

In my case I am planning to use a similar setup but instead of heater use it for running an air conditioner - The one advantage I have is that the AC is inverter type. so it ramps up the load from 100 Watt to 900 watts in linear fashion giving ample time to the contractor to act and disconnect if it is a cloudy day without much tick toc effect

pranil,
plumbing for solar water heating is quite straight forward when you put your mind to it - especially for gravity feed systems like mine.
your geyser idea while laudable may meet with several hiccups when put to real world situations. from personal experience it pays to have a dedicated system for solar water heating. reason being that your solar water heater continues to heat up your water regardless of whether it is a cloudy day or not. however, with your geyser idea, on the same cloudy day, unless you massively oversize your solar panels, your battery bank will struggle to get enough juice and there may be no excess power available to divert to water heating.
Yes but in my particular case I have 5.6 Kwp installed with house load of just 500 watt during normal school days except washing machine for one hour. Since I am in rented House it is easier for me to relocate the PV panels and Gyserwise than to rearrange plumbing.

Also Gyserwise fits with my main design principle. When the grid is available to use the grid as far as possible. At current 24 NGN /Unit Grid power is still cheapest per unit of energy in Nigeria. if the situation changes we shall see

The other option I was thinking of was to use PVT panels ( hybrid panels) where solar PV is combined with EV tubes
Uptil now I did not find them in Nigeria market.

Thanks for the valuable information. Streaming from music sites to Chromecast Audio would be a once in a while affair due to expensive data. I am thinking about streaming audio directly from a NAS.
yes I am using Plex with my Synology and works without any problem
Synology also has DSaudio which cats to chrome cast

since this is primarily a Solar forum we can discuss offline
Any more issues you can directly reach me anil_ghatikarAtyxxxx.com

Choemcast Audio oand video both work. I use play store from India so Google music also works . Even if Google music could ot work there are plenty of apps which support googlecast Audio - Personally I use Deezer ( www.Deezer.com) and TuneinRadio along with Pocketcast regularly

pranil,
thanks for the insight. Indeed there is joy in living a diy lifestyle - which is why most of us are here in the first place. ever thought of incorporating solar water heating to your setup?
May times but the plumbing headaches stop me from doing so. Now the solar panels are dropping in price I am thinking of converting existing geysers into solar geyser using SolarPV-

e.g. One 200 Ltr Solar water heater at 200 K + plumbing upwards is similar to 3 x 300 Watt + one Gyserwise controller -
http://www.geyserrobot.co.za/Technical_Details/technical_details.html

I will switch off NEPA to Gyserrobot using a Relay based on SOC. So If the SOC is high then Gyser will use the PV

Just have to find time during my many projects.
Currently trying to automate my projector screen to drop down on voice command from google home

hello pranil,
quite an interesting setup you have there and rather complex for a water supply system. I'm really trying to understand what you really wanted to achieve with such an elaborate setup? I got banned twice now when I tried quoting your post.
Haha . It's not complex. all those pipes and joints are left after initial machines were added removed etc. Plus I am a lazy plumber sometimes I just leave old pipes in capped instead of replacing the whole circuit
It is a normal system but built with redundancies and parallel circuits so I can choose the water source and or the outlet

I have a water purifier for drinking water that I built myself. to keep purifier running I need clean water intake. Also, the borehole used to cause stains on taps and especially on the car body and window glass so water softener. The booster to improve pressure as with Security cabin, BQ and gardening in parallel to house sometimes the pressure is too low to be usable

except for the pumps the whole setup did not cost more than 30,000 including NRV's, valves, Floats etc but guarantees 24 Hours pure clean water with constant 3 Bar

Ultimately all is done with two separate purposes pleasure in building things yourself and life hacking ( improve your life by modifying stuff around you to suit your purpose)

I have 3 units of Trojan T105-RE (6V 225AH) batteries for sale. They're the same age (almost 2 years) and have never been cycled below 70% DoD.
Reason for sale: battery bank upgrade

We completed the installation of the Victron Quattro 8000 yesterday. Enjoy
Very nice installation - clean looking and nicely matched battery box to Victron blue and nicely laid out with minimum battery lengths/

I had few questions though. It's not a criticism but I am trying to understand how inverters are normally used in Nigeria

1. Are you not using AC IN -2 or AC out 2 - I don't see any wires or MCB for it.
2. Why there is a changeover switch. Victron has its own built in transfer switch rated 110 Amps of much better quality
3. Is there no earthing either for body or neutral? Normally an ELCB on output and connection external earth should be provided as Victron has floating output
4. if there is no other brand charge controller than BMV was not needed. Quattro has built in SOC monitoring you could have used Venus GX/CCGX giving customer the choice to see the battery status and other parameters online through mobile or on PC/Tablet - Was the price a constraint

Keenly following, too. Awaiting the photos. Thanks.
I have three Tanks

Water001.jpg ( the smallest Groudn tank 1000 Ltr receives bore hole water acrosss the day - Bore-hole runs on Solar only )
The Water is pumped to overhead tank 1500 ltrs - Again daytime solar only as the pump is controlled by float levels
The overhead tank slowly discharges into 5000 Lts ground tank through a 10 Micron filter and a water softener unit - Typically 1000 to 2000 Ltrs a day depending on when I serviced the filters and how much use was there in a day
The 5000 Ltr ground tank also receives direct waterboard water ( once or twice a week for an hour if I am lucky )

Water 003 .jpg - You can see the water filter ( blue cap) and water softener ( white cylinder)

Water 002 jpg my abandoned water pump and booster tank ( they are still connected as backup but not powered up)

Water 005 .jpg - The scala ( black machine) takes the water from 5000 Ltrs and supplies to whole house . - The overhead tank is also connected to house via a NRV and bypass switch incase the pump is bad or I am cleaning the tanks -

The whole system is interconnected and interlocked with controller and floats so only manual part once is a month is cleaning the filter and restocking the softener with Salt
