A blackout has hit large parts of Britain, disrupting train travel and snarling Friday afternoon rush-hour traffic.


London, the south-east and north-west of England, and Scotland were impacted, leaving hundreds of thousands of people temporarily without electricity.

Power supplier National Grid said issues with two generators caused the loss of power and they had since been resolved.

Many people reported the outage lasted just a few minutes, but the impact on travellers was severe.

London's transit operator said some traffic lights in the city had been knocked out, and advised drivers to be careful.

National Rail Enquiries, which is run by Britain's train companies, said power supply problems caused disruption to a "large number of train services".

Rail services across the country were cancelled or delayed during the Friday evening rush hour, and commuter trains powered by overhead wires ground to a halt mid-journey.

London North Eastern Railway said all services were suspended in and out of King's Cross, one of London's busiest stations. It tweeted: "Customer advice is DO NOT TRAVEL."

The power failure came as heavy rainstorms drenched the London area, causing flooding at Luton Airport, about 47 kilometres north of the capital.

The airport said in a statement the "unprecedented rainfall" caused "water damage in a number of locations in the terminal" and apologised for the disruption.

President Muhammadu Buhari Friday arrived Daura, Katsina State, for a nine-day official visit, which includes celebrating the Eid-el-Kabir with family members, and commissioning of developmental projects.



The President was received by Governor Aminu Bello Masari, Deputy Governor Mannir Yakubu and top government officials at the Umaru Musa Yar'Adua International Airport, while the Emir of Daura, Faruk Umar Faruk and members of the Emirate Council welcomed him at the Helipad in Daura.

During the visit, President Buhari will commission a Nigerian Air force Reference Hospital in Daura, and some road projects completed by the state government: Shinkafi-Yandaki-Gafia-Abdallawa-Dakaba and Fago-Katsayal-Kwasarawa-Jirdede-Koza.

The President is expected to receive the President of Guinea, Alpha Conde, and also meet with victims of banditry attacks in the Katsina State before returning to Abuja.

During the Gun man attack at Walmart El Paso, Texas yesterday that claimed the life of at least 20 and wounded 22 a young soldier risked his life to save the lives of many children that would have died in the attack.

The US military News outlet, Task and Purpose reported how Glendon Oakley Jr. Played hero to save children's lives during the El Paso Walmart Shooting.

At first, Army Pfc. Glendon Oakley Jr. was completely unaware of the chaos unfolding just around the corner. Then he pulled his gun.

A 22-year-old Army automated logistics specialist assigned to the 504th Composite Supply Company, 142nd Combat Support Sustainment Battalion, 1st Armored Division Sustainment Brigade at Fort Bliss, Texas, Oakley had been shopping at a sporting goods store inside the Cielo Vista Mall in El Paso when a young child burst into the store shouting about an active shooter at the nearby Walmart.

"The guy at the register and I sort of looked at each other," Oakley told Task & Purpose in a phone interview on Saturday. "He's a little kid ... are you going to believe him?"

The threat was very real. At least 20 people were killed and dozens more wounded when a gunman opened fire at the Walmart, sending terrified bystanders fleeing through the neighboring mall.

When Oakley exited the store minutes later and headed to the neighboring Footlocker, he finally heard the sound of gunfire echoing across the mall. He immediately pulled the Glock 9mm he occaisionally carries under Texas's concealed carry laws.

While he had just returned from an incident-free deployment to Kuwait, this was not his first firefight.

"That's what you do," he told Task & Purpose. "You pull your gun, you find cover, and you figure out what to do next."

A handful of employees had initially brought down the store's metal security gate, but they had decided to make a run for the mall exits. Oakley followed, an impromptu rear guard for the group.

The group quickly stumbled upon a group of a dozen children clustered in one of the mall's open play areas, screaming for their parents. Oakley says he tried to get fleeing bystanders to help, but none would stop.

"I didn't even think. I just grabbed as many kids as I could and ran five stores down to the exit," he said. "We got there and ran into a whole batch of police pointing their guns at us. I wasn't focused on myself, and I wasn't focused on my surroundings ... I was just focused on those kids."

In an interview with local television station KTSM outside the Cielo Vista Mall, Oakley was clearly shaken, the adrenaline pumping through his system. And when reached by Task & Purpose on Saturday, he said that, despite his training, he was "scared for my life."

"I heard four kids died," he said, his voice softening. "I wish I could have gotten more kids out of there. I wish those guys who ran would have stayed ... I just think, what if that was my child? How would I want some other man to react?"

A pause: "I wish they had some sense of service."

A lecturer at the Federal University, Dutsinma, Katsina State, Mr. Abubakar Idris, has been abducted by hoodlums.


The varsity teacher was kidnapped on Friday at his residence, No. 41A, Lawal Aliyu Road, Barnawa area of Kaduna metropolis.

The Kaduna State Police Command Public Relations Officer, DSP Yakubu Sabo, confirmed the incident to News Agency of Nigeria on Saturday.

Sabo said the Command received information through DPO Barnawa Division, Kaduna, that two unidentified persons gained entrance into Idris’ residence.

“The unidentified men forced him to enter his Ash-coloured BMW car with registration number not yet known and zoomed off to unknown destination,” he said.

Sabo said that patrol teams led by the DPO quickly moved to the scene but the hoodlums had escaped with the victim.

He said investigation later revealed that the victim was likely trailed by the hoodlums while returning home at about 01:00hrs.

“The Command is currently making efforts to apprehend the fleeing suspected criminals and rescue the victim,” he said.

The first Lady of Zamfara State, Hajiya A'isha Bello has met with the 8 year-old primary school pupil, Fatima Ismail Lawwali who went viral for trekking two kilometers to school.

Hajiya A'isha Has donated a motorcycle that will be use to take Fatima to school, gave her wrappers, cash gift and other educational materials.

Lawwali said that the closest school to their home was practically in a shambles, explaining that his daughter might not be able to cope academically in such environment which makes him feel it is necessary to choose an enabling enrolment for her to study.

A’isha Matawalle while presenting the gifts disclosed that she saw the picture of the girl on Facebook trekking to school and decided that something positive should be done to assist the family in their quest to educate their child.

“It is heartbreaking when I saw the picture of the girl on social media and this donation is in line with my pet project’s mission to ensure the educational development of the girl child in Zamfara State,” A’isha said.

Repentant Boko Haram member narrated how he lived with the deadly group in an exclusive interview with the BBC.

The man who spent 8 years with the Boko Haram group said he wouldn't want his name to be disclosed.

He said that he joined Boko Haram because he was jobless and had no source of income.

At that time they were paying us 3000 Naira whenever we carry out an attack, or we kidnapped someone and ransom was paid or we go for gathering of intelligent report.

The young man said he and his friends were lured into Boko Haram because they were told they would be working for Islam.

He said but after joining the group they found out that its activities were far from Islamic teachings.

"When I read Qur'an I see that Allah forbids alcohol, Fornication but Boko Haram Members uses hard drugs, they abduct women and rape them, some of them don't even pray but they will attack and kill those who perform prayers "

That's why we decided to leave the group.

Initially we were in town but we later relocated to bush and from there they stopped paying us money and forbade us from coming to town, when the leaders want to go to town they ask us what we need so that they will buy for us.

They threatened to kill whoever try to leave the group.

We only go to town when they send us to carry out attack or they want us to gather intelligent report for them before carrying an attack.

We have never seen Shekau or any of his close allies.

Some of us were hoping to see shekau to kill him because of the hardship he subjected us to.

They lied to us that some big men will come and give us 500,000 to 600,000 but we have never seen them.

The young man said, his biggest regret was killing an elderly man when they were carrying out an attack.

"I didn't know how to handle gun very well and we attacked a village, I mistakenly killed the man"

That was my biggest regret, sometimes when I close my eyes i use to see that elderly man.

He said they left Boko Haram Camp in the Night when their leaders were asleep and surrendered to soldiers.

They were then given rehabilitation training and were given training on vocational skills.

He said he is now a Carpenter and happy.

This report is part of how Boko Haram started in the last ten years.

This is coming just after a WAEC official denied knowledge of whether the Cambridge University Assessment International Studies Education held by President Buhari is a certificate or not.

Afro pop star, David ‘Davido’ Adeleke has become the most viewed Nigerian artist on the streaming platform, YouTube.


News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the ‘Aye’ singer has amassed over 500 million views across all his uploads on the platform to achieve this feat.

In January, Davido’s hit song, ‘Fall’ beat out Yemi Alade’s ‘Johnny’ to become the most viewed Nigerian music video on YouTube.

He then became the first Nigerian artist to reach over 100 million views on YouTube racing ahead of Yemi Alade and Tekno.

As the head of his label, DMW, Davido’s YouTube page also streams the tracks and videos of his label mates including Mayorkun, Peruzzi and Dremo.

In 2017, Davido had an unprecedented career resurgence with his row of hits including ‘If’, ‘Fall’, ‘Fia’ and ‘Like Dat’.

Davido was the first Nigerian artist to reach one million, two million, five million and nine million followers on Instagram and now one of the most bankable Nigerian on the platform.

The Rural Electrification Agency, REA Under Federal Government has announced that the Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ebonyi is now independent of National Power Grid because the institution is now generating its power from solar panels.

REA via its official Twitter handle says that the project is now completed and ready for commissioning.

3500 solar panels were installed to serve 7,700 student and 1,819 staff members of the University.

The solar Panels generates total Capacity of 2.8MW and as a result 108 Jobs were created.

The Nigerian Senate had the longest session in the last 20 years of its existance on Friday, the made the sacrifice in order to ensure smooth screening of Ministerial Nominees of the president Buhari.

The Senate was supposed to go on official leave by Thursday because they traditionally hold session from Tueday to Thursday but because of the list of ministerial nominees they received from the president they stayed in order to screen them and extended their working days to Friday and will continue with the Screeening by Monday.

The Senate agreed to give former legislative on the ministerial Nominees list special treatment by not asking them question and allow them to take a bow and go, the special treatment was also extended to female Nominees.

After Friday Session, President of the senate, Ahmad Lawal took to his twitter handle and thanked his colleagues for their sacrifice.

He said "Since my twenty years in the parliament, I have never witnessed such an unusual situation where Senators will seat a day-long to perform their legislative duties, screening ministers. I want to thank my colleagues for the immense sacrifice they made in this regard."

Nigerians have since mocked the senate president for his comments.

One of those who reacted to the tweet, @FFagishtee said, “You people are the most exotic legislators in the world… Give me 1/3 of your salary and I’d work till midnight…”

Another one said he would become a robot and work “40 days and 40 nights” if paid the bogus salary the lawmakers earn.

Lanre, with the handle @Cappy_son, said the lawmakers had not done anything special. “This ain’t no sacrifice, It’s duty call,” he said.

Another Nigerian with the Twitter handle, @alphaolive, said: “I would have suggested that you should gather them (ministerial nominees) in one day and allow them to recite the second stanza of our national anthem and thereafter ask them to take a bow. After all, none of you knows the portfolio they would be deployed. This submissive collaboration will affect Nigeria much.

“Apologies sir, they are overpaid, pampered Nigerians. They should put in a good shift like the butcher in Sabo market, yam seller in Ketu market or vegetable seller in Bodija market. We must stop taking Nigeria for granted. So for 20 years, you have worked half-day for a full days wages,” tweeted Babatolly with the handle @babatolly.

Some, however, commended the lawmakers for their diligence.

Martyns Opuruichei Nsirim with the handle, @MartynsNsirim, said: “Finally, Nigeria have gotten the fit and proper Senate president whose interest is to move the nation forward working in unity with the other arms of govt. This is how democracy works. No arm is totally independent of each other. With this spirit of yours, the future looks bright.”
