Governor Kashim Shettima of Borno State yesterday led stakeholders and elders from Chibok community to the DSS Medical Centre where the governor’s delegation met with the 82 schoolgirls freed by Boko Haram three years after their abduction at Government Secondary School, Chibok. The governor’s wife, Nana Shettima was also at the centre to meet the girls. Shettima’s delegation included the District head of Chibok, prominent elders, Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume, representing Borno South, lawmakers at the House of Representatives and Borno State Assembly representing Chibok and other government officials from Chibok community. The governor was received by the Minister of Women Affairs, Mrs Jummai Alhassan and the Chief Medical Director of the Department of State Services Medical Centre, Mrs Ann Okorafor. Alhassan revealed that although the 21 girls freed by the insurgents in October, last year, have been under the custody of the Federal Government and undergoing rehabilitation, Shettima has been making financial contributions to the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs to co-fund the rehabilitation and skills acquisition programmes. “The people of Borno State are lucky to have a compassionate Governor who cares deeply and genuinely for his people. The 21 girls freed last year are under the Federal Government but Governor Shettima said these girls are his daughters; they are citizens of Borno and as such, he was still going to be making contributions so that whatever we planned as Federal Government could be improved upon and he has been supporting us. He offered support without us asking and I am sure he will still support us in managing our 82 daughters by the time they leave this hospital and come to us” the Minister said. Shettima told the girls that he was so full of joy and looks forward to receiving their remaining counterparts still being held. “By the grace of God, your sisters will be also be freed. We have a determined President. All we need is to support him and pray for him. I assure you that we shall do whatever we can to make you not only comfortable but to actualize your dreams of becoming whatever you wanted while in school. 56 of your colleagues, who escaped from abduction are in their final year in two international private schools. They are doing very well. We will work with the Federal Government and your parents to determine what is best for you. For now, the focus is on your health. I will urge you to cooperate with the physicians here. Please, do not hide anything from them. They are trained to keep your medical records confidential and the information you give them is what they need to assess your health.” https://i0.wp.com/media.premiumtimesng.com/wp-content/files/2017/05/Freed-Chibok-Girls-meets-President-Buhari.jpg Source: http://www.legendvibes.com.ng/2017/05/shettima-chibok-elders-meet-82-freed.html |
Switzerland has given an insight into why it was part of the negotiation that led to the release of the 82 Chibok girls abducted three years ago by the terror group, Boko Haram. According to a news report published on Tuesday by a UK newspaper, IBTimes UK, the Swiss government said their involvement in the negotiation with Boko Haram was as a result of a request from the Nigerian government, in addition to “humanitarian concerns”. President Muhammadu Buhari, Sunday, had thanked Switzerland, the International Committee of Red Cross, Nigerian military and security agencies, and local and international NGOs for their help in the release of the girls. The Red Cross had on Monday explained its role in freeing the girls. IBTimes UK quoted Noemie Charton, the spokesperson for the Switzerland’s foreign ministry, as saying “Switzerland’s commitment is motivated by humanitarian concerns.” “Switzerland’s engagement in this operation was guided by the principles of strict neutrality and non-interference.” The paper also quoted a security analyst and counter-terrorism expert, David Otto, who said that “the Switzerland representative played an active role in organising negotiations from within Nigeria and outside Nigeria along with local key actors like Barrister Zannah Mustapha and (human rights activist and lawyer) Asiha Wakil who wield trust due to their pre-existing relationships with one or more factions (of Boko Haram)” Details of the negotiations that resulted in the release of the girls have not been disclosed by the federal government. The government has also not disclosed the number of Boko Haram suspects released in the swap deal. Switzerland, according to the paper, called on Boko Haram to release the remaining girls who are in their captivity. The released girls are among the over 270 abducted from their dormitories in a government secondary school in Chibok, Borno State in April 2014 as they prepared to write their final exams. Twenty-one of them were earlier released last October after negotiations between Boko Haram and the Nigerian government. Two other girls were found separately, in addition to those who escaped on the night of their abduction. With the latest release, about 80 Chibok girls are now being held by the Boko Haram. https://i0.wp.com/media.premiumtimesng.com/wp-content/files/2017/05/pic.17.-minister-of-heath-visits-released-chibok-school-girls-in-abuja-resized-800.jpg |

The Borno State Governor, Kashim Shettima, and some other Northern traditional and political leaders have approached Senate President Bukola Saraki and other lawmakers, asking them to upturn the suspension of Ali Ndume, LEGEND VIBES can authoritatively report. Mr. Shettima led a team, described as “Borno elders” by our source, to the residence of Mr. Saraki, Thursday night, seeking to end the feud between the estranged allies and ensuring the suspension slammed on Mr. Ndume is lifted. “The purpose of the visit,” disclosed the source who is knowledgeable about the development, was for “mediation.” “They went to meet other leaders in Senate as well,” the source, a Senate insider, added. Mr. Ndume was suspended from legislative activities for six months, after the Senate, on Wednesday, upheld the report of its committee on ethics, privileges and public petitions chaired by Samuel Anyanwu, PDP-Imo. Mr. Ndume had, at plenary last week, raised the bullet proof car scandal involving Mr. Saraki, and the certificate scandal involving another senator, Dino Melaye. The two matters, Mr. Ndume said, had made the Senate subject of public ridicule. He then asked the Senate to investigate Messrs. Saraki and Melaye, two persons he had aligned with in 2015 in subverting the will of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, in electing the Senate leadership. Mr. Anyanwu’s ethics committee, tasked to conduct the investigation, convened an investigative hearing on Monday, attended by parties concerned with the cases regarding Messrs. Saraki and Melaye. The Vice-Chancellor of the Ahmadu Bello University, Ibrahim Garba, confirmed Mr. Melaye graduated from the school, while Lanre Shittu, a car dealer, absolved Mr. Saraki of culpability in respect of the fake documents with which the bullet proof car was imported. In its report, the committee cleared Messrs. Saraki and Melaye, and recommended one-year suspension for Mr. Ndume alleged to have demeaned the reputation of the Senate with the issues he brought against his colleagues without conducting proper Investigation. However, there was plea for a lighter punishment, and the suspension was reduced to six months. But beyond the matters raised by Mr. Ndume, he has had broken relationship with Mr. Saraki over his support for Ibrahim Magu, embattled acting chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. Mr. Ndume had disagreed with the Senate resolution on Mr. Magu, when the EFCC acting chair was first rejected in December last year. He also faulted a resolution of the upper chamber indicting the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, over what has come to be known as ‘grass-cutting scandal’. It was majorly on the basis of his open disagreement with the two resolutions of the Senate that Mr. Ndume was removed as Senate Leader. He had told LEGEND VIBES Mr. Saraki masterminded his removal. But the Borno State Governor, Mr. Shettima, has commenced efforts to reconcile Mr. Saraki and Mr. Ndume with a view to ensuring the latter’s suspension is lifted. Mr. Shettima’s spokesperson, Isa Gusau, declined comment on Friday. But he did not deny that the meeting between his principal and Mr. Saraki held. However, LEGEND VIBES gathered from lawmakers that Mr. Shettima also met with Danjuma Goje (APC-Gombe) and “even Dino Melaye” and that “he is determined to meet and persuade as many Senators as possible” over Mr. Ndume’s suspension. Mr. Shettima’s concern, LEGEND VIBES understands, is that Mr. Ndume is key to Borno’s efforts at recovering and rebuilding after years of devastation caused by Boko Haram insurgency. “Borno can’t afford not to have a Senator like Ndume in the Senate for six months,” said a source, because “Borno is a peculiar case.” More so, some of the worst hit areas, like Gwoza, Damboa, fall within Mr. Ndume’s constituency and “therefore he has to be there to push their interests as he is also part of the presidential committee on north east,” one source said. But apart from Mr. Shettima, there are other Northern leaders, including emirs, retired generals, former governors and ex-senators, who are prevailing on Mr. Ndume that he should submit to a process of political solution which will see Mr. Saraki and other lawmakers agree to lift the suspension slammed on the Borno politician, LEGEND VIBES can authoritatively report. In fact, a team of Northern leaders arrived Abuja after the suspension, seeking to resolve the crisis. When contacted and told what we gathered on Friday, Mr. Ndume said: “what you heard is correct.” He however refused to provide further details other than saying “I’m still consulting”. A source close to Mr. Saraki said “Ndume’s suspension is mostly likely to be lifted” following the efforts being made by Mr. Shettima and other Northern leaders. When contacted, the Senate President’s spokesperson, Yusuph Olaniyonu, said he was not authorised to speak on the matter

As more and more soft drink brands flood the market, Nigeria has been listed as one of the countries with the highest volume of soft drink sales. Speaking on Wednesday, March 30, at the ongoing Third International Trade Exhibition on agrofood, plastics, printing and packaging in Lagos, Martina Claus, the head of market development, German Engineering Federation, said Nigeria ranked fourth globally in the volume of soft drink sales recorded in 2016. According to her, the statistics on soft drinks sales were sourced from the Euromonitor International, a global market intelligence publisher, NAN reports. The four countries with the highest volume of soft drink sales are; https://www.planwallpaper.com/static/images/4833-004-EB8E7F6C.jpg 1. With all the health warnings about consumption of soft drinks, you would think Nigerians will reduce their intake.

On several occasions, artistes take for granted the consequence of drought and hiatus in the Nigerian music scene. Sadly for us, today, boi-kiss is one of those who have made that list. I don’t think any other artist enjoyed a more fulfilling year (asides Wizkid ) than G-Worldwide’s Kiss Daniel did in 2016. It was like a flip of page or should I say coin for the afro pop singer who went from being shunned for one of the most dramatic award categories in Nigeria to bagging home the hip-hop world revelation award and best pop album of the year plus other awards. Kiss Daniel was arguably the biggest new indigenous artist of the year 2016. Formerly, we thought the boy was not loved after receiving ‘cold shoulders’ at the top. But critical review has shown that Kiss Daniel is moving in the wrong wagon. Yes! To be clear; it is safe to say the G-Worldwide team has failed to use this boy’s potential the way it should. I mean, I recall many saying that Kiss Daniel has that fusion of 9ice and 2Baba . As an artiste who just recently broke into the A-list category; you don’t start a new music year later than your fellow counterparts. The 1st quarter is just ending and there has been no talk of new offerings from Kiss Daniel… We have so far enjoyed the ‘New Era’ album as well as the array of visuals that followed suit, but it is a new year and this favourite boy is seriously lagging behind. Does this mean G-Worldwide is incapable of effectively managing just the two artistes they have? Honestly, so many questions come to mind but the more I think about them, the more rhetoric they get. Oh and one more, what’s the deal behind this no collaboration clause in their artistes’ contract? Sometimes we laugh at the deals these artistes sign with their founding record label. G-Worldwide is not even a crowded label but yet they have failed at honing the potentials laden in the prospects-full music acts, which they signed. Lastly need I say that only one thing can happen this year; ‘Kiss Daniel quits G-Worldwide’[ that is definitely a headline I will be looking forward to. Dear Kiss Daniel, stop the tours and videos and get back to studio for new project! It is time to wake up! Wake up!! Wake up!!! (Scene close). MTN has made a payment of 30 billion Naira ($98 million) to the Nigerian government in part settlement of a 330 billion naira fine imposed on the telecoms group for not disconnecting unregistered SIM cards. According to Reuters reports, an MTN source revealed on Thursdayf that the Arica’s largest telecoms company has already paid 80 billion naira of the total amount owed. The fine is due for payment in six instalments over three years. MTN Nigeria was originally fined $5.2 billion last October for failing to deactivate more than five million unregistered SIM cards, but the fine was reduced in a settlement that paved the way for MTN to list its subsidiary on the Nigerian Stock Exchange. Nigeria has been cracking down on unregistered SIM cards, concerned that they are used for criminal activity in a country fighting an insurgency by Islamist militant group Boko Haram. MTN, which operates in 20 countries, had set aside $600 million last year to pay the fine. ($1 = 305.45 naira) Source: http://mobile.reuters.com/article/idUSL5N1H76GR

According to the source that email this to us... A 5-year-old boy was burnt to death when a fire broke out in his home at Ijorgbor Street, Upper Sokponba road in Ikpoba-Okha local government, Edo state. The boy was reportedly locked inside a room with his brother by their father when the fire broke out, engulfing their apartment. According to neighbours, after their father locked them inside, he went out to buy something, unfortunately, that was when the fire started. Neighbours said they heard the deceased and his brother scream for help as they were getting burnt and they rallied around to get the boys out of the burning house. One of them finally succeeded in breaking through a burglary proof in one of the windows and rescued one of the boys. The other was not so lucky. Osamudiamen Edobor, one of the neighbours of the deceased, spoke about the fire incident, revealing that the intensity of the fire kept them from getting to the second brother. "They have stove and generator in that room. The man was cooking in the room. It is sad that one of the children died," Edobor said. When contacted, the state police command spokesman, DSP Moses Nkombe, said he was yet to be briefed on the incident. https://i2.wp.com/media.premiumtimesng.com/wp-content/files/2016/03/NNPC-Towers-1.jpg The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, said on Monday it had reached a final settlement with AITEO Group over an outstanding $202.4 million (about N62 billion) debt in respect of under-delivery of petroleum products under the crude swap contract between 2012 and 2014. Under the crude swap deal by the NNPC during the Goodluck Jonathan administration, the NNPC allocated crude oil to trading companies in exchange for processed petroleum products. That deal was criticised by several analysts who argued that the oil firms were, in collusion with top public officials, cheating the Nigerian government. The government had said it embarked on the deal because, among others, the local refineries were not working optimally and so as to reduce cash payment for imported petrol. On Monday, the NNPC spokesperson, Ndu Ughamadu said following extensive reconciliation of records between their business transactions and subsequent agreement, AITEO Group paid in full all its outstanding indebtedness to all NNPC downstream entities totalling about $202.35 million. Mr. Ughamadu said the amount included AITEO’s share of the total $184 million indebtedness by three companies on crude swap obligations, which included Televeras Group of Companies and Ontario Oil Gas Ltd. Although Televeras Group, at the end of negotiations with the NNPC, agreed pay an initial $17.2 million and $10 million subsequently, there was no earlier information on the offer by AITEO, which also agreed to settle its debt. The NNPC spokesperson said on Monday that AITEO’s agreement to settle the $202.4 million debt following its engagement with the NNPC on the issue was a demonstration of its cooperation and commitment towards a successful recovery process. AITEO Energy owned by Benedict Peter and Francis Peter was one of the seven major Nigerian fuel importers identified by the Swiss non-governmental advocacy organization, the Berne Declaration, as the worst culprits in schemes employed by Nigerian and foreign fuel importers to swindle the country. https://i2.wp.com/media.premiumtimesng.com/wp-content/files/2017/03/aiteo-group1.jpg The report, published in November 2013 titled Swiss Traders’ Opaque Deals in Nigeria, described the schemes employed by Nigerian and foreign fuel importers, such as creating offshore subsidiaries referred to as “letterbox companies”, ship-to-ship transfer to create untraceable paperwork, payment of subsidy money to phantom and non-existing importers, and partnering with politically exposed fraudsters to defraud the country over $6.8 billion from 2009 and 2011. The Lagos-based AITEO Energy, which is a subsidiary of Geneva-based Aiteo Suisse AG, was asked by the then Technical Committee on Payment of Fuel Subsidy to reimburse the Nigerian government over N578 million in subsidy fund it falsely collected. The company was one of the three oil marketing firms whose offshore processing agreements were terminated on August 26, 2015 after the contract was found to have been ridden with corruption. Mr. Ughamadu said as part of the debt recovery process, negotiations were still ongoing with the management of Ontario Oil & Gas Limited to make a formal commitment to settle all its outstanding debts under a crude oil swap contract that existed between 2012 and 2014. Although Mr. Ughamadu told PREMIUM TIMES, Saturday, that the company, which was convicted recently for subsidy fraud, had offered its tank farm at Oghara in Delta state in lieu of the debt, he said the amount arrived at after the valuation of the facility was said to be far below an acceptable figure. The NNPC spokesperson said the Group Managing Director of the Corporation, Maikanti Baru, has vowed to ensure that the ongoing recovery process was completed and all debts settled. “The Management of the Corporation under the leadership of Dr. Maikanti Baru is committed to ensuring transparency and adequate public information on the ongoing recovery effort. The Corporation shall continue to provide further update on the recovery process,” he said. I target Lekki residents because they pay up quickly - Fake Lagos Land Use officer Olaitan Shofolahan, 37, a man arrested by the operatives of Rapid Response Squad of the Lagos State Police Command for impersonating officials of the Lagos State Land Use Charge has blamed unemployment as the cause of his action. Shofolahan, an Accounting graduate of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta, Ogun State, was arrested on Thursday in Lekki Phase 1, while attempting to defraud a resident of the posh estate of several millions Land Use Charge dues. The suspect, who was working in his brother’s audit firm in Sabo, Yaba, before abandoning the job in search of better offer, stated that his moves to join the Lagos State Public Service was frustrated by lack of vacancy. According to the suspect, “I was working with my brother in his audit firm in Sabo, Yaba, earning N45, 000 monthly salary before I left the firm in search of employment. I was at Lagos State Civil Service Commission several times to seek employment. It was during one of my visits that I learnt that payment for Land Use Charge in the state is through a code. The code is engraved on every metal sticker issued to every house. It is with this code that you get an annual bill of the house and that you can get your charges printed out for you free with the bills. That was how I started moving round choice location to get their code and print their bills. Any house that does not owe, I discard but those with huge bills, I work on them. I have being in the business since February, 2015. I have observed that owners of buildings in Lekki have capacity to settle their bills quickly, that was why I have focused there. Unfortunately for me, it was this location that I was caught. I entered the building in Lekki Phase 1 unknown to me that the officials of the Lagos States Land Use Charge were there with the house owner. The owner of the building after sitting me down, invited RRS officials to arrest me." Source; http://www.legendvibes.com.ng/2017/03/i-target-lekki-because-they-pay-quickly.html?m=1
