Culture › Re: Aro, Igbo-ibibio Relations by Probz(op): 7:19pm On Nov 16, 2017
RedboneSmith:
The Uruan subgroup of the Ibibios were there first. Then the Igbo under Eze Agwu came next. The Igbo clashed with the Ibibios and brought an Edda native doctor Oke Nnachi to make war medicine for them. The Edda doctor in turn recruited the Akpa mercenary warriors under the command of Akuma Nnubi. After the war which expelled the Ibibios (except for a small remnant that integrated into the new emerging Aro society) Akuma became king, but after a while, the kingship passed from the Akuma (Akpa) line to the Oke Nnachi (Edda) line.

This is the summary of a complicated foundation tradition that has many versions. If Odumchi is still here he may have a thing or two to add or correct. He is a son of the soil.
I see. And what about those Aro communities scattered across Igboland (aka not just Arochikwu)? Birds of the same feather?

Culture › Re: African Americans Narrate History Of Igbo And Haiti Resistance Against Slavery by Probz(m): 4:50am On Nov 12, 2017
bigfrancis21:
Dude, forget it. It has been established in the academic world already that a higher number of Igbo slaves were sent overall (1.4m), compared to Yoruba slaves (circa 500,000), and that Yoruba slave trade peaked in the 1800s, about 100 to 150 years after Igbo slaves had been sold considerably. That is why I am not surprised when I see articles like this about many African American DNA testings turning out to be Igbo. Plenty of them. In terms of DNA, it is expected that more afro-descended peoples would carry more partial or full Igbo DNA than Yoruba, whereas in terms of African religion, the Yoruba one is the most popular in the new world and we would expect more adherents of Ifa compared to Obeah. Also, gone are those days of the early 2000s when writers were quick to assume any black person practising Ifa to be of Yoruba origin, which tended to erroneously exaggerate the number of Yoruba slaves exported to the new world. Nowadays, with DNA testing and more enlightenment, it is now a common thought (or common sense I would say), that the number of Yoruba exports was smaller than originally thought, and that Ifa is only a religion encompassing several members descended from different tribes in West Africa, and that not all Ifa followers are of Yoruba ancestry, thus it would be wrong to assume so. That is, one could be mostly of Kongo descent while practising Ifa, just as Roman Catholics of Nigeria are not descended from Rome but practice the Roman Catholic faith.

Moreover this is not a fight or comparison. Of course you do care about Igbo affairs and that is why you are always quick to rush into any Igbo-focused thread like this to 'stylishly' insert some Yoruba mention or whatnot. Dude, quit that child's play. Igbo is Igbo and Yoruba is Yoruba and each tribe in the new world is known for different things. Just last week I met an African American answering Nnamdi as his name, given to him from birth by his African American parents and, to my surprise, the dude even knows what the name means and a few Igbo words.

I saw this thread earlier and passed. I only returned here specifically to trash your false ideologies and unnecessary display of exuberance.

I’ll stress again it’s only Wright’s liquid smoke that’s worth buying. That one na pure smoke and water. The other brands sold in the market have added preservatives and nonsense like vinegar in them. Not good.

Oyibos do this liquid smoke distin all the time. It’s just that most Nigerians haven’t heard about it.

Who wants to know how to get the authentic smoky party jollof rice flavour without firewood?

There’s a few easy things you can do that only the mamas at the top know about. But I’ve discovered them, innit. Holla at me.

This thing I can recommend works even better if you’re based outside Nigeria.
^

The secret’s a drop or two of liquid smoke (Wright’s and only Wright’s brand). If you’re in the States go buy and add a drop to whatever you want to have a smoky flavour to (not just party jollof). You can use laspong souchong tea bags anywhere in obodo oyibo (that gives a smoky flavour too). One of those two will be fine. Just don’t burn the pot kpatakpata in the name of jollof. That one’s just burnt jollof.

You can order Wright’s liquid smoke on eBay if you’re not in America (that’s what I did). Una should try am and let me know how it goes.

Food › Beef/goat Meat Stew Recipe by Probz(op): 11:38pm On Nov 06, 2017
Ingredients:

Beef and/or Goat Meat
Fresh plum tomatoes
Ose Nsukka (yellow pepper)
Conc. tomato paste (aka Gino/De Rica...)
At least 2 onions
Stock cubes (Maggi/Knorr/Onga...)
Crayfish
Nigerian curry leaves or nchaunwu
Oil
Salt

1. De-seed the tomatoes and blend coarsely with the yellow pepper.
2. Boil the tomato-pepper purée in a pot till it’s dry.
3. Heat some oil in a separate pot, fry an onion and add the purée. Fry until you see streaks of oil, the oil is separated from the tomatoes and (most importantly) the sour taste is gone.
4. Mix the De Rica in a bowl with water until it’s as watery as the stew. Add and fry till the tangy taste is gone and the oil rises to the top again.
5. Cook your beef/goat meat with onions, Maggi and salt.
6. Add the stock to the stew (small so the stew won’t be watery) and add crayfish and the vegetables (skip the crayfish if it’s curry leaves you will use). Stir and leave it to simmer and it’s done innit. cool

Sorry, I don't think there is any difference, but Yoruba jollof rice might be a little bit peppery compared to the Igbo's version. Also Igbo jollof rice might contain crayfish and maybe some vegetables; it is just my own observation, but there is no much difference.
That ewa’s a troll but that’s the difference, yh. I’m always fervently praying that they haven’t put crayfish in the jellof rice whenever I attend Igbo events.
