you should start potty training your puppy as soon aa he gets to your home.

ans for your jumping rott. if its just due to excitement, theres nothng to worry about. but you can stop the habit by always giving a stern look when he comes close and a 'NO'.

BRINGING AN ADULT DOG HOME

Often times I have introduced adult dogs to my home. As easy as this may sound, it might also be tasking.

First Impression Matters

Lets start off with meeting the dog initially, for those who are intimidated by the size of a dog, It is ideal to know that if you think a dog is too big for you to handle, you probably shouldn't be handling the dog. If not, then take the dog by the leash and walk the dog(with the previous owner beside you) on a distance long enough to get him exhausted.

This helps the dog burn off energy and calms him on getting to the new home.

START A ROUTINE WITH YOUR DOG

How well you conduct a routine for the new dog determines how fast your dog will get used to his new environment. It is your responsibility to set rules so as to avoid having a problematic dog later.
Here are a few steps to help your dog understand how things are done in his new home.

- Walk the Dog. It is very essential you socialize your new friend by taking regular daily walks. This can also be used for potty training. Right from the first day he gets in, do not allow him make the mistake of pooping where you don't want him to. Take him out for walks and spend more time in the area you want him to poop. As it is said, there's nothing that helps a dog get trained than consistency. Be consistent in your routines,

- You want it? SIT! This is a very important step in bonding with your dog. Before you drop the food dish, before you let him walk out of the door, before you pet him. by doing this, he'll start to think all good things comes only when he behaves in a desired manner.

Don't share your meal. Its not ideal to share your meals with your dog. if you do, then don't blame the dog for begging, Also don't add table scraps to his food. This way he'll understand people's food is strictly for people.

Get your new dog acquainted with everyone in his new home. Allow everyone take turns in walking the dog. This way he understands his family members and knows how many people are included in his new family. Note: If you have a baby in the house then you might be taking a risk bringing in an adult dog. It is important for your dog to grow with your kid.

This way, your dog gets the attention he needs, exercise and all the love he can get from the family,

The essence of this thread is to share experiences if you had ever faced it and the measures you took to handle it.
Ofcos I know bout virus and vaccines,but here I'm sharing 1st hand experience.
I learnt alli shared as I assisted the Drs and google all I could bout the case.

the truth be told like I pointed out earlier, metro is an antibiotic itself. for treating one of the symptoms if parvo.

its basically 3 symptoms.
-vomiting
-diarrhea
-loss of appetite

metro for the diarrhea

cant remember the name of the injection for vomiting. but its a vial you'll inject in whatever fluid youre passing from the brown rubber.

and dextrose to serve as energizer and food.

and to correct the notion, a puppy thats free from parvo can still contact parvo. not just from thesame source.

so underatanding this is what makes the difference between just doing it ans knowing what 'it' is

This is exactly the problem with infusion as it must be administered intravenously which most quacks or even some vets find hard to get the veins.this can be related to why I lost the imported bullmastiff and the boerboel as the do shifting @ D vets and the Dr on duty that sunday was a lady and she could not get the veins and was just talking theories lol.we quarelled that day but later became friends as I can understand it only takes an expert to get veins from a dehydrating pup as most of the veins are already weak.
This is why I open up to others to share experiences.is there other alternatives to hydrating the pup if u can't pass infusion?
Metronidazole can be an antibiotic but cannot fight the parvo virus,it can only stop poo.its just flagyl

metronidazole can. I use metronidazole, dextrose and one other injection that stops vomiting. The key factor is timing. You have to clear out your schedule for a parvo pup. I had a case of parvo early this year and thanks to a vet friend who also assited, all 6 puppies survived. I think the problem withvets treating parvo is they can't be there 24/7. And energency might emerge at any time of the day.

I remember the worst sound then was when a pup starts throwing up again.... I nearly gave up. Until gradually they started catching up.

One other thing I realised is, during the course of infusion, it's ideal the pup excretes a smelly...I mean really smelly bloody poop.

The next thing is a very clear urine. When I see that, I knw there's hope.

I learnt from experience not to expose pups to other dogs or clinic environment at tender ages.cos my adult dogs had contacts with the pups somehow but was not infected,even my then 7mths old bullmastiff.
I also realised that you can actually spread parvo to young pups by just an handshake with a Dr attending parvo case and u carelessly take that hand to carry ur pup.I don't let clients to touch my pups,I don't take dem to clinics for vaccines and make sure the Doctor coming to vaccines comes straight from home in the morning and not after attending to other cases in the clnic 1st.
Then for the treatment is basically done by hydrating the pup to last the days the antibiotic can cleanse the system.
They use Dextro saline and not water to restore energy loss from frequent vommiting and pooing without eating
Metronidazole infusion to stop frequent pooing
B complex injected in the drip (saline)
Then antibiotic to fight the virus.
Them most importantly ur TLC
Cleaninless care and ur presence can bring life into ur pet or give him the zeal to want to hold on much longer as he sees ur presence.wash the saliva from the mouths as he vommits and clean all bloody smelly. Poo
Cleanlinless I believe can heal all sickness.

Though some might have other approaches to Parvo,this is from my experience and other experiences can be shared here,

been a while, i have been so busy with some programming projects that i hardly have the time to browse nairaland, she just recovered from a self-imposed hunger strike.
just because she wants pure can meals and i strictly want to feed her k9 favourite plus dry food mixed with half can of pedigree wet food, she stopped eating.
i no longer leave her food lying around anymore, once she stops eating, i'll wrap it up and freeze it till next 12 hours, if she refuses it again, that will be next 12 hours.
She figured it out and now respects my decision.
she is very friendly and warm to everyone, but barks when you exhibit some trait of fear.

she has an innate calculative instinct. for instance when you run around the compound, she would turn back and block you from the other side.
if you have the space and cash to raise a dog, please get one.

they make good friends and always want to please you.
some lawma guys came around the other day, and a single woof got them sprinting, giving the neighborhood a good laugh

Rayance is so cute that people who are bold enough just want to play with her when we walk.

she turned 8 months 2 days ago. (born on the 5th of January)
