@ seller,

May be its me or may be i cant see too good. Why is the Logo missing in the first picture. Its there in the second. Only an accident could have done that. I hope i am wrong. pls shed a light on that, if you dont mind.

Autos / Re: Why Pay More? by promise72(m): 10:00am On Jun 15, 2009
Aloy.Emeka:

Do you know that most lexus vehicles are made in the same line with Toyota camry[their parent company]? Lexus ES300 and Toyota camry are manufactured in the same factory, use almost the same parts same  transmission, same  accesories, and engine but different names  yet one is about $15K more expensive than the other.

The VW phaeton, Audi A8 and Bentley are made in the same factory but the Bentley cost about $100K more.

Toyota Matrix and Pontiac Vibe are the same cars with two different names for marketing. The matrix is about $2k more expensive than the Pontiac vibe.

Can you now see that you are paying for car logo instead of quality?

Why pay more for names alone?

Because theres more to just a name. The VW photeaon was a financial disaster because of its name. As technologically advanced as it was, ppl balked at paying over $100,000 for a VW!

Wrap the same engineering with a Bentley body, then everyone including their mother will be falling over themselves to get one.

If you are a "Super Agent" selling multi million dollar homes in somewhere like Newport Beach or any of the Exclusive coast community in California. You wanna show a home, will you rather show up in a VW or Bentley?  undecided

Some of these deals might stretch for months while all kinks/legal wranglings are being worked out. Lunch, golf games, leisure drives to treat the potential clients. All in a VW or Camry? For something like a $10-15 million deal?

At the end of the day, most of these spending is under business expense. So rather than pay $1 million in taxes and lease a Toyota, why not pay like $850,000 in taxes and lease a Bentley?    Most high end cars are never bought cash! (At least, here in the U.S) Even if they could afford it. Rich people are rich for a reason undecided

Will you honestly hand ur money over or do business with someone that looks "desperate/hungry" if you are the client?  grin

Image is sometimes everything! Its better to look good than feel good (At least as far as Glitz, Glamour and Hollywood goes).  grin

I don't mean to rain on any parade here or be a whiner, but brand new, and at 22% interest, this car costs 2.6M and you want to sell this for 2.7M?
How the hell does that add up?

I dont live in Naija, nor i know this seller. However, i try as much as possible to follow the prices of things in Lagos as much as i can. Below is a snapshot of a pricelist that a NL'er posted few weeks back. I will think that this corolla fits the number 5 description.

Car Talk / Re: Vw Passat Or Audi A4 by promise72(m): 1:05am On Jun 15, 2009
ibdguy:

A member of my family owns an Audi A4, and I recently swapped cars with her for an evening. I found the A4 to be quite the stunner in the looks department, its muscular lines and flared wheel arches give it a truly sporty modern aesthetic that turned a few heads while I had it I can tell you. But I also importantly found that the incredible visibility I enjoy in my less than head turning Honda Accord 98-2002 was nowhere to be found in the sportier A4. I compare the two simply because it is the car that I had swapped for the night.
I can only imagine in a straight shoot out between the A4 and a fighter jet as to which had the more complicated instrumentation panel, the A4 would win hands down! Getting out of the thing was like performing a systems check each and every time, so varied and many were the sheer number of buttons that had to be pressed and prodded to park it (or conversely ignite it as they case may be). Perhaps I was suffering from a little bit of culture shock coming from the confines of my Honda Accord which is anything but complicated having all its dials and knobs in full view, easy to understand and certainly not suggesting you needed a Phd to qualify to drive it.
Infact, at one point the car prompted on its in dash display that I keep my foot on the brake when not engaging the gears. Thanks mate, I never would have guessed that!
But perhaps the car has a point, as one thing the A4 has to burn in spades is speed.
It is effortlessly quick in delivering power, and remarkably balanced while doing so.
The ride in the A4 is further aided by the firm feel on the road, this is no Honda Civic lightweight, this is a balanced German road machine made to be driven.
Yet for all the gushing over the cars innate drivability, I couldn't quite get over the quality (or lack thereof) in the interior finish.
All those buttons having to be pressed for the air conditioning, climate control and the like on the dash had basically been wiped clean of all literature, there were squeaks within the cabin which I swear shouldn't have been audible, with the general interior falling apart or looking more than a little worse for wear.
You might argue that the owner was responsible for the state of this paticular A4, but again comparing it to my Accord, at a full 10 years old, some 6 more at least than the A4 and even taking into consideration that I am a careful owner, it still doesn't add up as to why the interior was in such bad shape.
As for the Passat, no long review to give, as I have never driven rather than sat in one. My impression of the Passat? Significantly less than glowing is the short answer.
In a nutshell, if you are in the market for a handsome sporty car, with speed to marvel at, get the A4. If you want a better built car, look elsewhere, but in my humble opinion certainly not at the Passat. However in the Passat's defence, and for what its worth, both are essentially made by VW and in my experience tread carefully with their cars. Gorgeous to drive, (as was the case with the A4), but a pain to maintain.
Well its back to my beloved Accord for me. Lucky you that you have such a mothwateringly difficult choice to make. Good luck to you whichever you eventually decide on.

That's exactly what i was about to say! grin Did u hack into my system and took that from my computer? I wrote it just like that! Are u a psychic? You must be!. Anyway, well said. I enjoy reading that.

Audi/VW are birds of the same feather. Too much complaints on both of them lately. Save ur money. Get a 06/07 Accord (wt Navi) or Camry. They are not as pulsating and exhilirating as Audi. But they wont drain your wallet either. Remember the Kid's college funds. grin

Then the server would have experienced a kind spontaenous combustion a long time ago.
Imagine how many buildings went up in flames so that records go away.
Its not going to happen, we are too corrupt for that.
As long as the federal data shows that we have more people in Kano than Lagos, data will be what we want it to be.

As we have seen with some carfax reports.

grin Nice one.

Seems that we always find a way to ruin a good thing in Naija. No matter what the cost is. When you have importers go to somewhere like India/China to PURPOSELY request a manufacturer to reduce an Active content of a drug and still come to Naija and sell it for normal price undecided

Mrs Akuyili almost lost her life for doin the right thing undecided May God help us!
Autos / What If Vin Records Are Stored By Nigerians? Your Thoughts by promise72(m): 3:47am On Jun 14, 2009
Since the MANDATORY inclusion of VIN Numbers in Adverts (Even though some people still pretend that they dont know). I have seen a lot of clean up and "forced honesty" on the part of some sellers.  wink

As much as a VIN report is not a 100% surefire way to determine the complete history on a vehicle, it helps at least 90% of the time to determine quick idea about a vehicle's history, especially when odometer rollback is concerned.

As beautiful as the concept is, I just cant imagine if these records are kept and maintained by Nigerians. What worlds would we have been in? What do you think?

What you deduced is what is actually the dafter-than-daft interpretation.

The convergence in my argument is:
[li]If you live abroad, it makes sense to just invest that kind of money in an equivalently priced property in the West rather than the crap I am seeing above.[/li]
[li]If you are based in Nigeria, either it is best you build from scratch or you do the same as that above (buy abroad) and rent instead in Naija than be buying such load of crap for £210K.[/li]
Easy! Easy! Sofry Sofry undecided

Might be ok with someone else.

@ Topic -Jax is Ok I guess, just a few naija peeps though. It's a growing city and kind of boring to me as I would like to move elsewhere in a couple of years but I think after living in Cali you would absolutely hate Jax as it's like moving from Wuese or Maitamma to Caro or NyaNya but then again you might love it if you're looking for a more quiet place.

Thanks for the imput. The main reason im interested in JAX is cos its a very important shipping port. Also, the weather is not too cold. Though i have never been there, i hope to come an "look around" later this year. The ppty mkt is also very attractive.

I may have to hold on too cos the funding im hoping for is not a done deal yet and the job prospect in JAX, is not encouraging too.

Thanks to everybody. More JAX tales/lowdown can be directed to: Promise72@yahoo.com

Check the drivers side corner of widscreen. its easier if you stand outside the car. Like in police checkpoint grin. Look at the extreme right corner on drivers side. You will find a string on numbers. It should also be on your shipping documents or any document that accompany the car during shipping.

Its not too hard to find wink

Autos / Re: Are Passats Really Unreliable? Expert Advice Needed ? by promise72(m): 1:02pm On Jun 13, 2009
pak:

Hello guys,

I met one mechanic who had a corrolla on display to enquire but he told me the ride was sold. I told him the car I actually wanted was a 2000 - 2004 VW passat.
The guy just hissed, he said those cars are not reliable for a first car.
He reccomended either a Toyota, Honda or Nissan in that order
His reasons for criticizing passat.

1. Low second hand / resell value
2. Low availability of parts
3. Ease of developing faults.

I'l be in Lagos for the next one week and I want to get a ride b4 leaving, so I just one to make two enquiries

1. (For auto experts, Sienna, inspired et al )  Is it really unadvisable to get a passat or like brand as a first car and why exactly, any experiances.
2. ( For serious dealers in Lag) I need a car within the next one week and I have a budget of about 800k. Please I'l appreciate serious offers,

thanks and awaiting your responses.

I will suggest that you go with the "popular suspect" - Camry. Especially if you will be in Nigeria. God knows where you will need help. As much as German cars are considered a "drivers" car. The driver can feel the "feedbacks" from these cars. Truth is that the build quality and reliability has fallen in recent years.

For my money, i would be extra cautious in putting a penny of mine on any VW/Audi after 1998, or a Benz after 1995. Its unacceptable for these manufacturers to be losing place to ppl like Hyundai/Subaru in Consumer Reports/JD Power rankings. Despite the fact that Benz's and VW have been around longer than these "newbies".

With that said, if you will settle for a Honda, anywhere between 1998-2004. GET A MANUAL TRANSMISSION BY ALL MEANS! You might end up crying if you are unlucky. The Toyota, on the other hand, gets MY clean bill of health. Think Global, Act local!. Do what the indigenes do!  grin

Good luck!

Properties / Re: Why Are Nigerians Not Morgage Friendly? by promise72(m): 9:19am On Jun 12, 2009
Why get involved with mortgage when you dont have to? In Nigeria, you can build your house gradually which is impossible in UK/US. Hence u need mortgage.

Its impossible (almost impossible) to live in a rented house for 30years without the usual pressure from family/friends to build a house of your own. Hence ppl tend to "hurry up" and build their own.

Stay away from mortgage if you have a choice!

Silo is not a problem. Here in the US, you can get silos mounted already on trailer chassis. All u need is a trailer head to move it all the time. Do you know where i can find info on prices and if they can supply on REGULAR BASIS. i dont wanna invest in a silo only to be dissapointed by delivery.

@webmaster

there are a lot of Naija used cars that are in far better condition than those yankee cars. With all their VINs and Carfax reports, a lot of Naija cars still fare better. Afterall, some of the yankee cars that are sent down here are used by Naijas over there and besides it's a lot of stress for the cars imported to acclimatize because they are not tropicalized.

You seem to be very ignorant of what you are talking about. Why do you need to tropicalise a US spec car? US has extreme hot and cold weather conditions depending on where you live. That said, the cars are made to withstand either weather very well. Roads are good. If someone brings a bad car or an abused car home, that is different story. European cars may need to be tropicalised, but not US spec.

So you think all vehicles that come to naija from yankee are previously used by nigerians here? Does that sound intelligent to you?
