Mr. Lai Mohammed | credits: File copy The All Progressives Congress has said President Goodluck Jonathan is handing over a nation in deep crisis, even as his administration continues to contrive more crises without making any effort to solve any of them. In a statement in Abuja on Sunday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party however appealed to Nigerians not to lose hope, despite the daunting challenges they were currently facing in “this atmosphere of contrived chaos”, saying help was on the way. APC said, ”In a few days’ time, President Jonathan will hand over to President-elect Muhammadu Buhari. Never in the history of our country has any government handed over to another a more distressed country: No electricity, no fuel, workers are on strike, billions are owed to state and federal workers, 60 billion dollars are owed in national debt and the economy is virtually grounded. ”Today, Nigerians are roaming the streets, jerry cans in hand, searching for everything from kerosene to fuel to diesel to power their homes, keep their vehicles on the road and keep their businesses going. They are paying as much as 300 Naira per litre for fuel, if at all they can get it. Yet their government is not saying a word about the situation.” APC said while the “Jonathan administration has arrogantly told Nigerians that it remains in office and in power till May 29, all it has been doing was sacking people and making new appointments as if it has been deprived of the opportunity to do so in the past six years.” The incoming ruling party added, ”They are not interested in how to end the fuel scarcity that has paralysed the socio-economic lives of Nigerians, they are not interested in how to raise electricity production from its unprecedentedly-low level of 1,327 megawatts, they are not doing anything to end the strike by blue and while collar oil workers, or to stop the impending one. ”They say they are in office till May 29, but they do not care how workers in 18 states, who are owed a total of N300bn in salaries under their watch, or federal workers, who are owed N400bn will be paid. Yet they are running a budget of N1tr deficit. ”They have deliberately stopped meeting their obligations to oil marketers, which is now around N200bn; hence, no one is lifting petroleum products anymore. If the current energy crisis is not solved soonest, the telecommunications sector could even be grounded in a matter of days as service providers will have neither electricity nor fuel to power their base stations. “Of course, the aviation sector has already been left comatose by the fuel crisis. The whole scenario reeks of sabotage!” APC said before PDP and “Jonathan administration’s spin doctors distort its message, it is important to let Nigerians know that the party (APC) is not engaging in lamentations but simply keeping the citizenry informed of the situation on the ground”, with just five days to the handover date. APC stated, ”If we thought the nation was being well managed and there was no problem, we would not have embarked on a campaign of change. While we are ready, willing and able to begin to address the mammoth challenges facing us as a nation as soon as we assume office at the centre in a few days’ time, we will not hesitate for a second to keep Nigerians informed of how we have been brought to this sorry pass, with a view to avoiding such a tragic turn in the future.” It expressed sadness that the nation had been on auto pilot for the past several weeks, saying the outgoing administration had shown neither the capacity nor the willingness to resolve any of the crises it had “contrived and foisted” on the nation. ”This is the most vivid manifestation of the old saying that literally translates to a departing office holder defecating on the chair he is vacating,” APC said. President-elect Muhammadu Buhari, who is in the United Kingdom, presumably to rest, shocked the Nigerian High Commission in London when he turned down the use of a Rolls Royce made available for him by them. When Buhari arrived in London on Friday, he was met upon landing at the Heathrow Airport by officials of the High Commission. He however declined the use of the Rolls Royce and other facilities offered him, preferring to use a less flamboyant car which he had privately arranged. According to reports by The Nation, Buhari exchanged pleasantries with the embassy officials led by the High Commissioner, Dr Dalhatu Tafida. He thanked them for the reception but insisted that since he did not inform the embassy of his visit he would stick with his own arrangements. A source said: “It appeared he was uncomfortable with the number of exotic cars in the convoy. “Hard as the stunned diplomats present tried to convince him, he refused to bulge, insisting that since he did not inform the Commission of his visit because it was not an official trip, hence he was not entitled to such grandeur.” |

GMB MESSAGE TO NIGERIANS: Full text of Muhammadu Buhari's message to Nigerians this morning: "Let us talk, Nigerian to Nigerian." As we enter a year, let us talk - Nigerian to Nigerian. Many of you believe that something is wrong with Nigeria. Many of you have given up. Some of you think this country can never be good; can never get better. And so you forgive politicians for stealing and for mediocrity – because you say to yourselves, they are all thieves, they are all selfish and nothing will change. But is that really true? It is not. Many people ask me: why am I running for office again? And I ask them – what has changed since I began this mission? Can you honestly, truly say to yourself that our country has changed for the better? Are our children safe when they go to school? Are our parents safe when we leave them at home? Is the naira in your bank account of greater value today than it was four years ago? People accuse me of many things. But one thing they never accuse me of is corruption. They never accuse me of mediocrity. They never accuse me of lying. I have led this country and I have a record. We were not perfect, but we were effective, and we solved problems, and we made Nigerians proud to be Nigerians. In our government, we fought corruption, we stabilised the naira, and we shut down insurgencies. We shouldn't forget so soon that there was Maitatsine ravaging the northeast and we dealt with it; we also over ran the Chadian rebels that invaded Nigeria. In our government we rebuilt industries. Nigerians queued up and treated each other with respect; Nigerians took pride in our reputation for discipline. The world admired us. We were proud to be Nigerians. Because they can't attack my record, they accuse me of ethnic jingoism; they accuse me falsely of religious fundamentalism. Because they cannot attack our record, they accuse us falsely of calling for election violence - when we have only insisted on peace. And yet I was Head of State of this country and of course we never imposed Sha’riah. All my vice-presidential candidates have been either Igbo or Yoruba, and always Christian. I have and will continue to condemn those who burn God's places of worship, be they churches or mosques and wish God's judgment upon them. As your President, their punishment won't stop there - we will also ensure such elements are found, are arrested and face the full wrath of the law as punishment for their crimes against our country. So don’t let anyone attempt to blind you with fear so they can continue to plunder our nation’s resources, and to keep you away from the wealth that they share. How can 219 girls be missing in our country, and our leader appears incapable of action? How can 12 young people die because they were looking for jobs in Abuja and justice is not met? How can so many corruption scandals remain unsolved? How can we allow the cowards of Boko Haram take over any part of this country - a sovereign state? What is going on here? In this our country? In a country that belongs to all of us? This is very important to note: It doesn’t matter if you are Igbo, Yoruba, Ijaw, Hausa, Idoma, Efik, Ekwere, Urhobo Igala: neither does it matter if you are Christian, Muslim, animist or atheist: we need a new direction under a new leadership. This is why I am running for the office of the president of Nigeria. This is my promise: We will work hard and fast for you. Our children will go to school and they will return safe. Corruption will be a thing of the past and we will ensure that wealth goes around citizens in an equitable manner. Government will conduct itself in a disciplined and responsible manner; we will identify problems and fix them. The task ahead will be challenging and daunting but it is surmountable. That is what leadership is about. My only desire is to prove to you that Nigeria can truly work. Allow me prove to you that in your lifetime, you and your children can be proud of this country. Change is inevitable. The road to change however comes if we all go out on February the 14 to vote for the APC (All Progressives Congress) as the instrument of change. Let me make you this promise today. We will protect your children. We will protect your wealth. We will make this country work again, for everyone. My name is Muhammadu Buhari. Vote APC. Vote Muhammadu Buhari. God bless you all. God keep us strong.
