Politics / Re: FG To Concession Lagos - Ibadan Expressway by Pukkah: 12:27pm On Jan 07, 2014
juman:

Hmmm, you have a point.
It's an option.

The problem became complicated because of many many years of neglect of the road. But the road is also good to be upgraded to the right status.

Frankly, it's the right way to go. If you look at the breakdown of 2014 budget proposal, you WILL NOT expect any miracle on infrastructure.

If you compare the about 73million population of Nigeria in about 1978 when the expressway was built to the present estimated population figure of 160million, you will agree that we need another option to link the two busiest/populous cities in the SW. The population of Lagos around 1978 could not have been more than 4m.

Thirdly, the present Lagos-Ibadan expressway has lost its status as a freeway or expressway. There are so many estates and houses, religious centres, businesses, etc which make people dash across the highway.

Fourthly, the human carnage on that road is so much that nothing is too much to be done to provide an alternative.

ilugunboy:
Very right....
The same thing on my mind about the state of the expressway....you see trailers parked on the roads all the way from Ibafo to Ogere..down to Ojoo but with intermittent respite and you begin to ask if that road is still an highway or an intra-city road.
I also believe there should be a different approach....probably a collaboration among the states in the zone for a toll road.

I even forgot to include the trailers. They are a nuisance on the road.

It was an expressway between Alausa, Lagos and Ojoo, Ibadan. Today, it is no longer an expressway.

SW should make a bold move and leave the shameful Lagos-Ibadan with the FG; then move on to build a fresh, world-class highway, with light rail option, which can be tolled. The highway should have strict set-back regulations to shut out residential/business buildings and hawkers.

This will decongest Lagos and open up other places in the SW. For example, why can't someone work in Lagos and live in Ibadan?

There is land. There is a business case. The governors are in the same party. What's holding them back?

juman:

No, things are not done that way. The same road should be improved.

Why can't things be done that way?

Why can't there be an old road (the existing one) and a new one?

The existing one is largely no longer an express way in terms of purpose. Unlike the way it was in the 70s and 80s, it has become like an intra-city road. People cross the road in large numbers starting from Alausa, through Berger, OPIC, Arepo, Magboro, Ibafo, Mowe, up to Sagamu. There's some respite after that until you are close to Ibadan.

Getting to Ibadan, the so-called expressway is very busy all the way from the Toll Gate to Ojoo.

I ask you, is Lagos-Ibadan still an expressway? It has been overtaken by urban sprawls and development.

If things can't be done that way, you won't have old Ife road, old Abeokuta road, etc.

I am not absolving the FG of its incompetence but we need to move on.

The expressway was bad for ages before the concession to BiCourtney. Almost 5 years after the concession, the story is still the same. Can't we go think beyond the incompetent FG before giving sound infrastructure to our people?

Politics / Man Who Set Himself Ablaze Owes Bank, Others by Pukkah: 10:59am On Jan 07, 2014
A middle-aged man, Frederick Onigbo, who committed suicide by setting himself ablaze behind an NNPC mega station in Gwarimpa, Abuja, owed a bank and others.

Frederick had doused his body with fuel and set it on fire in the bush behind the filling station on December 23, 2013, but his charred corpse was not found until five days later, after a desperate search by his wife and children.

Frederick’s corpse was evacuated to the mortuary of the General Hospital, Kubwa by policemen from Gwarimpa Estate Police Division.

The remains will be taken to Awgu, Enugu State for burial this week.

His wife, Uchechukwu, told PUNCH Metro at their Gwarimpa village residence on Friday that the deceased was pushed into taking his life by debts and economic hardship.

She explained that Frederick had taken a N300,000 loan from a bank, which he wanted to start a business, but he was duped by his business partner and he became despondent, resulting in the tragedy that befell the family.

Uchechukwu said, “My husband was a very caring man and a peacemaker; I never believed he could kill himself because he was a gentle and romantic person. I believed he must have taken the decision to end his life because he owed a lot of people, including a bank which gave him a loan.

“He wanted to use the money to import goods from India, but his partner duped him and since then, he had not been himself and he also owed other people.”

The widow who lamented that she had been saddled with the responsibility of taking care of the seven children her husband left behind, said only support from kind-hearted Nigerians could help her survive the responsibility fate had placed on her doorstep.

The bereaved woman stated that she had to borrow N120,000 to pay the General Hospital Kubwa where her husband’s corpse was embalmed.

According to her, Frederick’s mother, who died in November,2013, has yet to be buried and the family is working to raise money for her funeral before Frederick committed suicide.

The National Coordinator, Women and Family Advanced Initiative, Dr. Uche Obi, also urged members of the public to come to the aid of the Onigbo family.

The FCT Police Public Relations Officer, Altienne Daniel, said investigation had commenced into the incident, adding that the police needed to go beyond the general explanation that Frederick committed suicide by probing the motive and other factors surrounding the tragedy.

Politics / Re: FG To Concession Lagos - Ibadan Expressway by Pukkah: 10:45am On Jan 07, 2014
juman: Federal government is confused as usual.

The lagos-ibadan road should be handed over to south west governments to handle.

The project is less than two billion dollars.

Mynd_44: They should just hand over the roads to the states. The FG has too much to worry about.

The FG has been incompetent in the development of infrastructure.

But why can't Lagos, Ogun and Oyo states collaborate to build a fresh highway to link Ibadan to Lagos and toll it accordingly.

Must it be this Lagos-Ibadan expressway which was built in the 70s?

They should start to think differently.

Politics / Robbers Attack Estate In Ogun, Kill RCCG Pastor by Pukkah: 10:40am On Jan 07, 2014
A gang of armed robbers stormed Redstar Estate in the Magboro area of Ogun State on Sunday, killing a senior pastor with the Redeemed Christian Church of God.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the victim, Tunde Olawuwo, was killed by the robbers for refusing to cooperate with them.

It was learnt that Olawuwo, who was the area pastor in RCCG Mount Zion Parish, Agiliti, Mile 12, was also a senior auditor at Redstar Express, a courier service company.

According to Police authorities, armed men stormed the estate around 2.55am and robbed two houses before attacking Olawuwo’s house.

A senior police officer, who spoke to our correspondent on the condition of anonymity, said, “We were told that around 2.55am, robbers attacked the estate and started shooting indiscriminately. Olawuwo was said to have hidden inside the ceiling of his house.

“The robbers probably thought he had hidden a gun in the ceiling and ordered him to come down but before he could do so, they shot him and he fell down. Before he could stand up, they stabbed him in the stomach and his intestines were ripped out.”

PUNCH Metro learnt that the victim, who was also the president of the estate residents association, was in his 50s.

Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, who confirmed the incident to our correspondent on the telephone, said the matter was being investigated at the Ibafo Police Division.

Adejobi said the police were able to intercept the robbers and kill one of them.

He said, “When policemen heard the shooting, they moved down to the scene and engaged the robbers in a gun battle. One of the robbers was killed in the process, while the others escaped with bullet wounds.

“The corpses have been transferred to the Sagamu General Hospital and investigations are ongoing. We also call on members of the public, especially hospitals, to alert the police of anybody seen with bullet wounds within the area.”

Meanwhile, PUNCH Metro learnt that some estates located off the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway have been experiencing robberies recently.

PUNCH Metro had reported last week that a gang of 20 robbers stormed Ascon Trailer Park tying up the policemen on duty and stealing an undisclosed sum of money.

It was also learnt that three weeks ago, robbers attacked Brentefield Estate, Oke Afa, Magboro, and robbed from house to house for several hours before fleeing.

What's the fundamental difference between spending taxpayers' money sponsoring a 9,999-man carol and building a church in a secular country?

I'm not in support of the two; the same way I don't support sponsoring of pilgrimages.

This Cramjones of a guy is an enigma. He puts forward his opinions, whether or not they are explosive or not, with some uncanny calmness and gentle stubbornness.

He ignores insults and turns a blind eye to snide remarks, preferring instead to focus on his message(s) which is to promote his APC party and weaken the PDP (my guess).

He's tenacious without being rude. He answers only relevant questions without losing focus. He also sidesteps issues that could snowball into distractions.

Honestly, the PPP team on the side of the PDP/Jonathan has a lot to learn from this guy who ruffles feathers without being ruffled.

President Umar Shehu Yar'adua, and not President Goodluck Jonathan, was the one who upgraded Enugu airport to international status.

He said the government was working towards the take-off of the state-owned oil company, Orient Petroleum Resources Limited, thereby providing employment for the unemployed.

"So Yar’Adua and I are deeply committed to righting age-long wrongs, wrought on the Nigerian society in the areas of corruption, infrastructural decay and human rights abuses, among others," Obi said.

Oh, I didn't see this thread on time. There's another thread with the same story on which I've posted some things and tried to educate some fools.

I will reproduce some of my posts from the other thread.

Pukkah:

This report rests on 4 pillars:

Enugu airport, Orient Petroleum, Census, and crude oil in Anambra/Kogi.

Right?

Odimegwu goofed with his comment. Fact. Jonathan did the right thing by querying him and he resigned. Who do you blame for this? Let's be honest.

Yar'Adua approved Enugu as an international airport and as a REGIONAL hub? Fact. Right?

I've provided links to what Peter Obi said on Orient Petroleum. Right?

Crude oil exploration is also baseless as Abia is an oil producing country. Why wasn't Abia denied by the so-called 'owners of Nigeria'?

Did I leave anything out?

I'm not even supporting Obasanjo and I have serious issues with the way APC is going about some things. While I criticize him, I have also suggested many things to Jonathan as I believe he could and should have changed many things.

This report, I maintain, is spurious and calculated to create some imaginary enemies for the SE and SS. I'm not saying the SE or SS don't have enemies but this report pieced together rubbish assumptions and tales just to create hatred, panic, and pandemonium.

Erm, why are you defending the report, are you the author?

It must not be lost on us that the late President Yar’Adua who took the initial practical steps towards the realization of this dream was from Katsina State, while the incumbent President who has boosted and guided the initiative to fruition, though closer home, is from Bayelsa in the South South.

Yar’Adua not only pronounced Enugu an international airport, but also awarded the first contract in the sum of about N4.1 billion towards the project.

You wondered at why I was expecting his own 'version'? He seems to know Nigeria more than those at the top, the truth is what the thread is about is nothing but the absolute truth about this contraption called Nigeria! Shortly after Biafra Civil War, Gowon promised them the 3Rs which he eventually declined on the long run, for that singular error, the Biafrans were formally emasculated which had denied them the Presidency in a country they sweated blood to build with other ethnic groups! Gowon shouldn't have defaulted on that Marshal Plan for the Biafrans even the Literary Icon of our time, Chinua Achebe posited on that in this article; http://sunnewsonline.com/new/opinion/of-achebe-awolowo-gowon-and-biafra/

My opinion is based on the examples cited by THIS report to arrive at its conclusion.

It would have been a different thing IF the report was about a 'civil war policy' without citing incorrect or nebulous examples.
