Business / Re: Is CBN Hoarding The Lesser Bills In The Economy? by Pukkah: 3:35pm On Dec 25, 2013
OMO IBO: How can there be scarcity of lower denominations when banks refuse to collect them if you have lots of it.

Practically, all the banks in Ota reject bundles of #100 bills including other lower denominations.

Their reason is : nobody wants them.

This sounds strange.

Banks have no right to reject lower bills.

Just last week, I saw tellers receiving lower bills in a bank.
MR. WHINNIG:
They are not hoarding it. Most people do not like to move around with the so-called lesser bills because of their low purchasing power and near worthlessness. Who would like to stuff his pocket and wallet with N5 notes? What people buy things with is what they will be given to them back as balance.

What of N10, N20 and N50?

What happens when you buy an item that costs N460 and pays with N500.

The 'divisibility' function that lower bills perform is more than their face value.

best4best: I think it is because people hardly collect money from the teller these days, ATM gives only 500 or 1000 naira note.

This is not the reason.

ATMs have been around for years and the scarcity of lower bills is a recent issue.

Moreso, even banks complain of scarcity of lower bills.

seangy4konji: Thieves like to deal with higher denominations as it is easier to buy bullet proof cars...Atm machines dont even provide 500 naira notes again so you should understand that the government is in support of higher denoms to be able to loot the economy well...DUBU DAYA THINGS...God will save us NIGERIA...By the way..MERRY XMAS NLDERS...LOVE YOU ALL AND HAVE A LOVELY HOLIDAY AND HAPPY NEW YEAR...Say no to corruption!!!

I really don't understand the relationship between your post and scarcity of lower bills.

It predates the yuletide and has nothing to do with it.

Besides, did you read the exact comment I laugh at? We both knew where he wanted the debate to go....but I wasn't gonna dive into the gutter with him.

Enjoy.

You stated very clearly and unambiguously that Buhari DID NOT campaign in two regions - SS and SE.

Some people provided links that he was in the two regions for campaigns.

Since no one is above mistakes, I expected that you would quickly reverse yourself, and, if you have the strength to do so, apologize.

Once you show remorse or sobriety over an error, no wise man would continue to pummel you.

It is not a sign of weakness to make mistakes or admit to them.

Lack-lustre reply from a fidgety, uninspiring godson to an overbearing, over-rated, 'messiahnic', and meddlesome godfather.

The difference between father and son is like that between the deaf and the dumb.

The father is deaf - he's hard of hearing and takes no advice and blew so many opportunities to make his country great.

The son is dumb - he hears, but takes no action. The other meaning of 'dumbness' also applies here and so may also end up blowing all the opportunities to make his country great.

The country itself is blind - they find it hard to 'see' there's hardly any difference between the two - both father and son are disabled.

The blindness of the country is unrivalled and so may never take advantage of the several opportunities to make itself great.

Hear Nyesom Wike in the past:

”The governor (Amaechi) as a very active person does not want some body who cannot meet up with his standard. As it is, he gives you an assignment and wants it done immediately. He doesn’t like excuses, he doesn’t like to hear that. By the time he says:’Let me have those documents’, don’t give him excuses. He is a governor that de-emphasizes protocol; he doesn’t even believe in it!’

Hear him on security:

“When we came in (in 2007), what was on ground was insecurity; there was insecurity in the state. This made alot of investors to leave this place (RiversState) because of the activities of the so-called militants who we refer to as ‘common criminals’. They made sure that life was uncomfortable for people. The governor (Amaechi) believes that we cannot do anything without tackling the situation in the state. What it used to be is not what it is now, it is now under control. And that is quite commendable. If you go round the state, you will see that even though some have left, investors have started coming back”.

Wike even lashed Amaechi's opponents:

”There are some people naturally that no matter what you do , they will think you are not doing any thing. It is in this part of the country that your political opponents won’t even appreciate anything you do, even when you do something right! To them, it is giving you credit and by giving you credit, they feel they are making you popular…”.

Honestly, if the truth must be told, it's not only Afam4ever that's guilty of this type of volte face that has become the template for the shameful politics of expediency that's played in Nigeria.

The list is getting longer by the day:

Reuben Abati...Nyesom Wike...Goodluck Jonathan...Bola Tinubu etc

For all these people, what they seek is survival and alignment with the realities of the moment.

The shameful somersault of Abati is well known. Goodluck Jonathan promised only a term and once called IBB his father. Now, he's shamelessly reneging. I was surprised to see Tinubu in Obasanjo's house shamelessly calling on him to rescue Nigeria.

That's the shifty nature of all of them - as politicians and as Nairaland members.

Indeed, it is shameful.

Kaduna has been ruled by PDP since the return to democracy in 1999.

Given these, the defection is a serious matter and an indication of what to expect in the days/months to come.

It was wrong for the CBN Governor to have released an improperly researched letter that made bogus claims.

The CBN Governor's office is a very sensitive one which should not be cheapened by recants or wrong or hasty releases.

If we are to apply Sanusi's usual style of brashness and dose of strictness, which he has applied on others, on him; the call for his resignation is in order.

Ngwakwe: Until the Electoral Law as amended is interpreted by the Supreme Court the validity of decamping to APC by PDP legislators and still retaining their seats is null and void.

The legality of defection of politicians should ordinarily not be the concern of the Jonathan camp.

The concern should be where the hearts of the politicians are. Are they really with Jonathan or they've moved on - whether or not they defect?

Suppose it is illegal to defect to another party, would it make the affected politicians compulsorily work for Jonathan or be loyal to him?

A politician can be a member of PDP and still work against PDP.

We sounded a note of warning to them then. Jonathan has sort of united all the cunning, savvy and clever politicians that are used to dog fights and being in the trenches. A good example is how APC and PDM were registered.

Those guys deliberately factionalized PDP because they knew the people decamping now would not be able to do so legally without a faction in PDP.

If the 'unsual' boldness of Amaechi was not enough to awaken the President, the walk-out of Atiku and the G7 Governors from the convention should have woken him up.

President Jonathan inherited PDP at the height of its power. Under his 'astute' leadership, in what position is PDP now?

If PDP were a publicly quoted company, the shareholders of the party would have long fired both Jonathan and Tukur for letting competition (APC) catch up and even attempt to overrun them.

Why would Jonathan describe a section of the country as his pillar of support? Why should Jonathan sit by and WATCH while Arthur Eze referred to Yoruba people (at a campaign in Anambra) in an unsalutary manner?

What was his response, as the Head of Government, to the famous and sensitive deportation saga which Peter Obi (who had also deported in the past) tribalized? Couldn't he have sued all the states involved on behalf of the Federation?

What has been the role of Jonathan's Police in apprehending those who stoned Soyinka and G7 Governors in PH?

Why did Jonathan wait until after the visit of A.C.N to Borno state before he went there?

Why did Jonathan absolve MEND of being behind the Independence Day bomb blast?

Why did Jonathan, a leader of a secular nation, combine state functions with pilgrimage to Israel, while needlessly brandishing Oritsejafor?

What has been Jonathan's response to the incendiary threats of violence by Asari Dokubo and Kingsley Kuku?

Why are militants getting contracts to the extent that they now own private jets and universities in a country where many people are poor?

Do you think he has handled corruption cases and allegations of misdemeanour well (including that of Stella Odua)?

Why should any serious President pardon a convicted looter like Alamieyeseigha? He watched as fuel subsidy ballooned from less than a trillion to almost 3 trillion naira. It has gone down again after the outcry with nobody brought to book.

Why should Amaechi be tagged a 'traitor' simply because he (as a South South Governor) was/is not supporting Jonathan? Shouldn't every intelligent person know that this approach could alienate Jonathan's supporters from other parts of Nigeria especially from the North?

The time for their regret has not even come.

We warned them then when Jonathan was dividing the Governors' Forum and saying 16 was greater than 19. We cautioned them when the Presidency unleashed Akpabio's PDP Governors' Forum, Gulak, Mimiko, Jang, Okupe, Abati, Wike, Patience Jonathan, Clark, Kuku, Asari Dokubo, etc.

The only person that was hesitant to join the fray and actually tactfully cautioned when the G7 Governors wanted to leave was Tony Anenih.

I did warn then that Amaechi could not have been acting alone and crushing him would not bring peace as he was merely the 'face of the forces opposed to the President'. I warned when they stoned Soyinka and the G7 Governors in Port Harcourt.

Now, where are all those names that I mentioned up there? Rather than advise the President wisely, they've alienated him and pushed him to cross the Rubicon.

The bitter truth is that politics has always been a game of numbers and will continue to be.

Today, are those numbers with Jonathan?

How do you explain that APC, a party that was formed barely 6 months ago, is the one that has become a major opposition?

A politically savvy President would have done everything in his powers to have Rotimi Ameachi ( the most vociferous supporter of the President prior to the debacle) in his camp. I lost all political respect for him the day he allowed the wife to embarrass the governor.

He made it worse by his failure to manage his crisis with OBJ properly and allowing the hawks...political hanger on and opportunists in the Presidency to throw cheap punch at the old fox.

In addition to all these gaffes, he held on to Tukur so tenaciously that you would begin to wonder what the attraction was/is.

A more politically savvy person would have agreed to the removal of Tukur in order to appease the disgruntled elements. That sacrifice could have been used to either placate them to drop their opposition to his seeking a second term, or at best weakening their demands. Rather, he thought dividing the NGF, removing Oyinlola and setting Rivers state on fire were the best moves.

Again, he could have made some compromise to the Atiku/PDM camp and/or Obasanjo's camp so as not to be at war on all fronts at the same time.

People need to know that there's a difference between politics and governance. You can't govern well without playing politics and seeking consensus, alliances and agreements. Right now, I can't see smart and savvy politicians in Jonathan's camp.

If Jonathan wants another term, he must change his tactics from brute force or arm twisting to building alliances and placating different forces and determining the ones to fight.

Leading in a democracy is different from running a one-man business.

Tinubu, whether you love or hate him, seems to understands this very well.

I wish our politics was played by good men, puritans and near saints but would this wish ever happen in 'real life'?

Even a novice in politics would have seen this coming....the day those governors developed the temerity to walk out on GEJ at the mini convention signaled and mark the watershed of beginning of trouble.

But a wise President and his advisers would have known that brute power...brawn and raw presidential power is meaningless without tactical use.

They are only reacting to events and not pro active.

It's apparent that he has VERY BAD ADVISERS as aides...

You're very right.

When Anenih mooted the idea of PDP adopting Jonathan as the 2015 candidate without party primaries, I wrote this (on May 31 this year):

Pukkah: Anenih, the Mr Fix-It of those days, is obviously at his wits end. The poor man is now old and understandly tired and his once robust bag of tricks is now empty.

Having been dusted in Edo state by the dimunitive but ruthless Oshiomhole, the man is too exhausted to fight this Amaechi/2015 tussle. Himself and the other aged PDP Chairman, Bamanga Tukur, have been throwing feeble and predictive blows at Amaechi, all of which the younger and more alert man has been ducking.

Unsure of the direction the 2015 PDP primaries could go, especially from the way the Governors' Forum election went, they've come up with another shift in the goal post - look for a way to dodge party primaries for Jonathan.

Honestly, these are not the best of times for the Jonathan 2015 camp.

Tukur is expired. Anenih is tired. Akpabio is not meticulous. Jang is expired. Dickson is a lapdog. The President himself is a poor politician. Amaechi has become an eel. OBJ has jumped ship. Dokubo and Clarke and Kuku are exasperating alarmists. Mimiko is unserious and a mere opportunist.

Fredrick Faseun is deluded. Peter Obi is lazy. Theo Orji is unthinking. Okupe is bumbling. Abati is confused. Most of the ministers aren't seasoned politicians. Sullivan Chime is sick and apathetic.

Saraki is cold. Atiku is mute. The VP is a rookie and a lighweight. The Senate President is his own man and has an agenda. Same for the Speaker of House of Reps. PDP is at its weakest point since 1999. The opposition is at its strongest point.

Who are the other visible names? No wonder they're looking for a shortcut. We understand, Mr Anenih, we understand.

Oh yes! They're too expensive to maintain! Yet one of the 50 questions to Iweala is the very high recurrent expenditure of the country.

But Nigerians are not also showing enough interest in the matter. They should be embarassed with inscriptions on shirts, BBM DPs, etc.

If the Presidency cannot persuade them or the RMFAC and they're not ready to willingly reduce it, then the fight should go to the people.

I also suggest that Iweala in her response to the 50 questions should mention their huge salaries as one of the reasons for the high recurrent expenditure and tell them to show readiness for a cut in the interest of the country.

However, it will be very disappointing if we discover that these questions are coming up because of the current polarisation of the polity. Why were these questions not asked before? It is now open season for scoring points against GEJ and so there is the need to question the patriotism of lawmakers if no questions along this line were raised before APC came to the scene.

I want to give them the benefit of the doubt. I've assumed these questions are in good faith. However, I expect them not to stop with the Finance Ministry. They should extend this intense oversight function to all the other Ministries.

Where are the tough qustions for the Transport, Works, Solid Minerals, Petroleum, Power, Communications, etc ministries?

The Houses of Assembly in the various states should also adopt same.

Democracy is good in an atmosphere of healthy debates. When Nigeria develops, it is not only members of APC or PDP that would enjoy it.

But Nigerian youths and other citizens also need to wake up and show more interest in what affects them.

They were very quick and energetic to make 'oga at the top' joke viral. They inscribed it on shirts and other items. They also responded in a similar way, although not with the same intensity, to the 'Go and Die' issue.

But they've been very silent on this issue that's far more important than those two other issues!

Why can't they make '50 Questions to Ministers/Commissioners' shirts?

If Nigerians don't show interest in the way they are being governed, the politicians/leaders are not likely to change overnight.

What Nigerians should be clamouring for is for such questions to be put to ALL Ministers and adopted by ALL states' Houses of Assembly to their Commissioners. The answers should also be followed through.

Nigeria is grossly under her potentials and I don't think a revolution can happen to change things. If a conventional revolution is near impossible why not try an intellectual revolution to see if things would change?

For now, I don't think people should focus on the delivery of the questions, the character of the questioners and other trivialities. What we should focus on is the substance (making this a culture) and not the form (whether the questioners were hostile or not).
