AgricultureRe: Hidden Truths About Catfish Business!!! by pumppie: 10:49am On May 02, 2016
Hello all, sorry for the delay as I am not in any way keeping us in suspense. Please let me say that what I am about to reveal is not something unusual and not a top secret, and like I said we can modify and improve on it. It’s just a template of some sort. Please also note that prices of feeds have changed since the last time this model was used. And harvest time was 2 months and 3 days. Some schools of thought, are of the opinion that you must hatch before you can make it big in mélange farming, this is not always the case. Cos truth is we cannot all hatch, even though hatching will definitely save u some cash but it also comes at a cost (N). Just ensure you get your fingerlings from a reputable breeder and pay attention to quality issue. What I’m presenting to u was achieved by a client last month.
Before I proceed let me shed light on some obstacles to attaining this target.

1. Low quality fingerlings: Please and please MAKE SURE ur fingerlings are of very FINE QUALITY and must be picking 1.5MM conveniently.
2. Apply the recommended mélange spacing ( don’t over stock a particular pond)
3. Don’t under feed: though there are recommended feeding schedule based on body weight, I feed to satiation but avoid wastage. Feed twice in a day and avoid feeding late at night.
4. Effectively use multivitamins: I use aqua pro and livstovit.
5. Effective water management.

COST
1. Fingerlings @ N10 x 6000 N60,000
2. 1.5mm coppen @ N4000 x 3 N12,000
3. 2mm Durante(scretting) @ N5,550 x 8 N 44,000
4. 3mm coppen @ N6000 x 8 N48,000
5. 4mm Vital feed @ N4,250 x 48 N204,000
6. Aqua pro @ N350 x 2 N700
7. Livstovit @ N500 x 1 N500

TOTAL COST: N369, 200

Total Kg (after 2 months plus): 1920kg

N;B (1) mélange is sold in bowls(bafs) usually containing 30kg/bowl for this cycle, 64bowls were obtained.

;B (2) : he sold @450/kg, thus total sales was N864,000.
Gross profit: N864, 000 – N369, 200 = N494, 800 (excluding miscellaneous)

N:B (3): I don’t use vital, I use durante (sktretting) (4MM ) but I suggested vital to him for convenience sake cos it floats unlike durante which requires spot feeding and patience to use.

N:B (4): you should target an average 300g to make profit, however you will find out that a reasonable number will even attain 400/ 500g.

N:B (5): I normally sell at N430/kg, but he was able to sell at 450/kg which I think we should all insist on selling now (feeds and cost of running this business is quite higher now).

I am currently trying out alla aqua (3mm) at the moment cos coppen has increased drastically. Will update when the cycle is complete. Please if there are areas to be elaborated on I will be willing to, regards.

hi all,
my novice question
pls wot is d standard stocking rate for cats in a 9/16.5 tarpaulin pond
and a 10/9 pond
as well as a 8/10 pond.
all for melange farming oh abeg....
lastly I will appreciate a low budget feed formulae frm juvenile to abt 2 and half month cos am targeting 350g..
low budget feed of #180/kilo max.......
thanks in advance
!
urgent oh !!!!
this thread is a sort of earth where treasure can be found but to get the treasure u need to dig deep patiently. There is always a price to pay for anything u wanna achieve. If d price to make u succede is to dig deep within d thread pls do because all what u seek lie in here. When someone told me about this thread, I assumed a novice and read patiently all thru its indeed an encyclopedia on catfish. Please its best u don't see catfish as a cheap business. In fact, I will employ us all farmers to really take time to plan what we want to achieve and d cost implications without short cuts first. I promised a melange model, I deliberately withheld it cos of d boiling issues on ground. I must say, my model is not cheap, but it gives over 100% ROA in 2and half months. Surprisingly one of my client even recorded success in 2months and 3 days. We can all improve on it. So bro, no hastyness abt this, stay calm and groove to ur success. Regards.

gurus in d house , lets discuss runts, what causes it, must a farmer use hybrid to make profit, is it impossible to make gain using clarias spp, how long should it take to get to table size & any other related issue that comes to mind.

PLS DON'T COME AND PULL ANYONE DOWN, DON'T COME TO MARKET YOUR PRODUCTS ALSO.

Just let us have your take on this.

Hello bro, so sorry for responding late been quite busy. And let me commend you for making efforts at realigning the focus of this thread. While sympathizing with those affected, I believe whatever damage has been done is now in the past and we can only move forward while learning from whatever mistakes. Let me briefly talk about the points you raised here;

Runts: I’m sure most of us know what they are, but in simple term they are fishes that will never grow as expected no matter what the farmer does. Feed them with the best foreign feed, good water management etc, they will show little or no progress. Another variation of runts are those that will not feed well, and when your fishes are not feeding well they won’t grow. Farmers having runts as stocks usually spend more time on management and overhead cost on a particular production cycle without much or nothing to show for it in terms of results. Someone once came to me cos what he had were 10 months old and they were weighing between 200g and 350g!

CAUSES: I will like to look at this from the following perspectives;
1. Genetics: I believe belexy has touched this, just to add that brood stocks with a poor genetic makeup will never give the right and needed quality seeds.
2. Human Factors: this is quite elaborate and where most farmers either mistakenly or deliberately get it wrong. Some breeders either due to lack of experience use brooders that are not MATURE this can greatly affect output and produce low quality fingerlings. Some don’t even care about the source and history of the brooders, I have heard of some going to the roadside mama eleja to buy fishes they instantly use. Such crude practice will not guarantee sufficient and quality seeds.

Secondly, poor management/ feeding which may result in nutrients deficiency and also outbreak of diseases/ infections is also a major cause of having runts. Produce seeds in thousands and fail to feed adequately, the result will be kwashiorkor seeds very deficient in nutrients to make them grow well. Also, I have noticed that disease outbreak can affect your fries such that no matter how much treatment is given to them it is not uncommon to find some that will never recover fully and hence they remain runts. Thus, it’s better and safer to prevent disease outbreak and infection.

Finally, the general health and physiological characteristics of brooders also have a great roles to play with relations to the quality of seeds. It is bad practice to use unhealthy or stressed brooders. This will not only affect hatching rate but may also produce low quality seeds.
On the issue of HYBRID, a farmer does not have to make use of hybrid before he makes profit. In fact, some of the problems people are sharing on this thread for some days now may be partly due to the fact that some are looking for hybrid specie. Sometimes I even wonder why the craze for a special specie because in truth you can hardly find any that is not mixed with our traditional clarias spp. (I am not saying we don’t have hybrids pls). CLARIAS will do well in a reasonable period if best farm practice and methods are maintained.

TABLE SIZE: the duration to attain table size depends on different factors such as; your target market, the quality of your seeds, stage of stocking, general farm management (feeding, water management etc). In sango otta for instance, they buy more of 500g to 800g and this can be achieved in at least 3 months plus. Thus your target market will determine ur targeted weight and duration.
The stage at which your seeds are stocked whether fingerlings, post or juveniles can also determine the length of time to reach table size.

Finally, farm practice and methods, like quality feed, seed, pond type/system and water management are all factors that will definitely determine the duration of harvest. Generally speaking, table size can be achieved between 3months and 6months depending on what weight and size you intend to attain.
For me I don’t do more than 4 and half months max.

sometimes i seem not to understand some folks, if u try out a feed without result stop using it and get the feed that better suit u.
Truth be told how many of us has taken it upon ourselves to test the so called foreign feed? Not at all because it is branded foreign. Excel said because a feed is cheap doesn't make it bad which i totally agree. Right from time immemorial fish farmers have been loosing their hard earned cash with the same imported feed like wise me. I remember i lost more than half of my stock using top feed who did i run to with all their CP i achieved nothing. From experience farmers tend to blame their shortcomings on a new feed most especially when it is cheap.
I once maintained that the best local feed is perhaps the one you make yourself while paying attention to all nutritional needs of your fish in terms of CP etc. I make bold to say that most of our commercially available feeds lack integrity. They only work on most people’s mentality by claiming exaggerated CP because most people will fall for it. (We always want to save cost while maximizing profit). Mind you sir, TOP feed you mentioned is a locally made feed and not foreign.

And please for the fact that a feed is floating (extruded) does not make it foreign. I have read on this thread some feed formulation by ABLX and trust me they are not cheap to make. But the question is, is he getting results? Yes he is getting results. And that is why he can boldly say locally made feeds are better than foreign made. This does not mean we can’t have feeds that are cheap and will give results. Indeed results are a variable subject.

It is true that even some foreign feeds do have less CP than they claim, but truth is they are not always as bad as most locally made feeds. I am also aware that some of them have reference farms here where they get feedbacks on performance and adjust where necessary. This is why some now have feeds that are cheap and with lower CP.

On the feed in question, I was reading with keen interest and I am happy we don’t have to be in suspense cos the name has been revealed and we know the producer(s) and as excelsiorfam has pointed out, for the sake of integrity and rubbishing your wonderful initiative, it is of paramount importance for issues raised here on the quality and integrity of gelatin feed to be addressed asap. I will also beg to also comment on the agege issue that was mentioned. Regards.

Hello house, am not here to dent anybody's image or business. All am trying to say is please and please, try and check what ever anybody is trying to sell to u on this forum or any Wattsup group to avoid waste of ur hard earned money. Like I said earlier, if its feed u are buying, buy little and take it to a lab for test to know the composition of the feed. Especially those that are selling local feed on this forum. Most of dem, mark my words, most of them just lie to about the protein content and sell u rubbish and at d end of the day, opt out of fish business, saying it doesn't pay. Pls we should do the needful and stop being lazy cos fish farming is not a lazy man's business.
I think there is more to this than what u have said. Well, if u decide to keep quite and not be specific no p. Its ur choice. As much as there are credible farmers, consultants and products around it pains d heart that a lot of people and products indeed lack integrity. This lack of integrity issue is d difference between most of our local feeds and d so called foreign feeds. My advice, if u cannot professionally prepare ur own feed which might not be cheap too to be honest, use any of d available feeds that have stood d test of time and with intergrity too. Its not about d numbers u stock, its about how well u can manage it. So stock only what u can adequately cater for instead of seeking cheap alternatives promising u high cp but a scam. Don't worry tho prosperity will surely judge all those scammers!

This thread; you don't post what you cant explain appropriately to assist aspiring farmers or enlighten practicing fish farmers ( it is robonski's thread and has become a resource for getting great insight for many fish farmers within and outside the nation, especially africa ) , no offence.

I make comments when I see a question that hasn't been answered or an issue raised that I feel to rub minds with the poster or if asked/mentioned, and in cases where a previous discussion I was involve in spill over into more evaluation.

my dear brother, I strongly understand ur line of thought. I was only briefied on d possibilty of making that much in a short while which I gave a brief breakdown. Its a projection based on a proven model upon which other successful models have been made. Mind u, d original model was just for 6000 fingerlings to melange. So sure not all can do over 4.5m or so, but all can benefit even on a small scale. And at more convenient time I will give details of about 2 different models on melange fish that can change peoples life In a short period. N.b: d difference in model is just with the type of feed used). Its no top secrete, its probably what most of us know but ignore.

I applaud ur efforts and that of d creator of d thread and all other professionals....will be back soon. Tnx

Thank you very much sir i appreciate, we also commend your great advice on this thread.. you are very correct sir but to be honest how many farmers can stock 350,000 fingerlings/juvenile at a go.. well his idea might be feasible but he needs to provide more statistics on how to achieve it..
Though I haven’t seen the report you guys are talking about neither do I know this guy but yes 5m even in maximum 3months is possible with mélange fish farming.
60,000 fingerlings to be feed with #3,960,000 to attain average weight of 400g will give you a total of 24,000kg (800baf) and a gross return of #10,320,000 if u sell at #430/kg.
Cost of fingerlings and feeding (excluding miscellaneous) amounts to #4,560,000
Profit= #5,760,000

But I don't see him recovering from this.

I really wish he recovers from this act of shooting his own feet.

Sorry guys, i was saying fish meal don't come cheap even local ones. Except many years back when I get crumbs of fish and crayfish from sellers in oyingbo for free. But now, most of dem know they cash in on it so they already have feed mills they sell to. This is what u buy as local fish meal in some feed mill. And its never sold for #140! But if u can have access to that, great! However, many studies have found totally substituting fish meal with plant protein like soya bean meal, groundnut cake etc very rewarding. And with good results. Trust me, blood meal is about d highest with crude protein but there are also issues of pallatiability, quick pollution of water etc. So one can actually use a combination of blood meal and good plant protein as a replacement for fish meal. U will still save a lot this way. I also want to mention that feed components vary according to how they are processed. I will later in the day provide the proximate nutritional compositions of some local and available materials so we can see at a glance. I believe with a proper balancing of plant protein, a safe amount of blood meal, other materials and fish oil feeding cost can be drastically reduced while maintaining a good FCR. Regards

AgricultureRe: Hidden Truths About Catfish Business!!! by pumppie: 10:51am On Oct 31, 2014
Whether earthen or concrete, both will do well. The key is management! Profitability however should be measured in terms of expenses, duration and outcome. While the concrete pond system might be expensive to run due to various overhead costs (constant water change, fuelling etc.), it generally produces quick results say between 3months to 4months. (Unlike earthen ponds). Some operators of earthen ponds hide under the guise that fishes are in there natural environment so they usually do little in terms of feeding, medication etc. Hence, the cause of poor harvest over a longer period. I have been practicing fish farming for over 12 years now and I can authoritatively tell you that I TOTALLY DISAGREE with the FACE statement that fishes in earthen ponds perform better. Performance can only be achieved WHEN and IF all measures are put in place!! SHIKENNA!
AgricultureRe: Catfish Farming: My Story by pumppie: 1:27pm On Oct 09, 2013
Hello nairalanders,

I must commend you all for a great job. I have personally followed this thread for a while. I was also into fish farming and i must confess i made so much money from it to afford my master degree in the uk where i presently live.
Following this thread got me thinking again and the opportunity came in form of a joint venture with my uncle who is a permanent sec with the ogun state government and who is also seriously considering retirement. The idea is to start the project growing out between 10,000 – 30,000 grow out within 2 months to be smoked and packaged for exportation (basically to the UK).
Of course this is a bigger project than i under took while in Nigeria. It also requires the construction of more ponds to accommodate the projected scale at which we intend the business to drive towards. So, i thought my uncle will need someone like a consultant to work with. Thus,

i gave him aquatic1’s details (bb pin and phone nos) not because he has impressed me in any way on this thread but because the project is located in ogun state.
I was told he was contacted by my uncle’s secretary to schedule an appointment 2 days before hand. And on the day of the proposed appointment my uncle was rebuffed by the attitude of acquatic1! Well, i actually didn’t know what transpired but i was told aquatic said he was fixed for the day because he wanted to do business with other people. The man was angry and asked if he thought he was coming for an excursion when he asked to see him? I was also told he called the man a boy and said he meets people like him everyday etc.
Please, I’m not here to castigate aquatic cos its possible he has done good deals with people on this thread and I’m sure they will have good things to say about him. But i feel its important we all understand `and inculcate the ethics of good customer service in our business dealings.

You don’t know what your unruly behaviour has caused me cos this man is at the moment contributing the bulk of the money needed for this project. And I’m finding it quite hard to convince him to forge ahead with the business without me necessarily coming to naija for now. The secretary said he even went as far as telling him to go do business with chi or durantee for all he cares!!! People, this is not the best way to attend to people and I’m sure not the best way to do business. All the while, you where dealing with the secretary and he was reporting to the man....

I don’t want to believe that everyone on nairaland are unruly business men and scammers too. I am not particularly happy at this recent development but will strive towards ensuring this guy does not ruin this project with what he has done........aquatic1, even if you have made so much money, you should still keep your head down....
