FACT-CHECK: Did Court Restrain Obaseki From Contesting Edo PDP Primaries?

DADDY D.O, a Twitter user with the username @DOlusegun, on Monday posted a document at exactly 11:51 pm with the claim that a Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt has restrained Godwin Obaseki, the incumbent Edo state governor, from participating in the Peoples’ Democratic Party’s gubernatorial primaries in the state.

In the past 11 hours, his post has garnered over 300 retweets and 500 ‘likes’ respectively.

The ICIR investigation also showed that the post has garnered 1,012,832 views as the time of filing this report.

In the last 7 hours, more than 6 popular Nigerian newspapers including Sahara Reporters, Vanguard, TheNation, TheCable, DailyPost, amongst others, have also reported on Tuesday that Obaseki was restrained from contesting the party’s primary election.

The Findings

The ICIR examined the same reported document, with suit number FHC/PH/CS/69/2020 and discovered that the Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, only ordered “accelerated hearing” of the suit seeking to stop Governor Obaseki from participating in the Edo PDP’s primary election slated for Thursday.

The suit in question was filed on Monday by Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihama, One of the PDP governorship aspirants in Edo State. Prior to the court order, Ogbeide-Ihama has vowed not to step down for Obaseki after Gideon Ikhine, another aspirant, withdrew from the race.

On the first page of the document, the suit has Uche Secondus, National Chairman of the PDP, as the first defendant. Other defendants are Emmanuel Ogidi, Kingsley Chinda, Debekeme, James Manager, Ajibola Muraina, the PDP, Obaseki and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as second to ninth defendants respectively.

Ogbeide-Ihama, through his lawyers, Donald Denwigwe (SAN) and Chief F. Orbih, SAN, and leader of PDP in Edo State, had prayed the court to stop Obaseki because his defection to the party, a few days to the primary, was unreasonable and aimed at destabilising other aspirants.

The plaintiff also prayed the court to order the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, from recognising Obaseki as a candidate in the party’s primary.

PoliticsEdo 2020: 5 Nigerian Governors Who Defeated Their Godfathers by Purplebirdrep(op): 8:27am On Jun 14, 2020
Babawale Oke

An Awkward, unexpected but not too-uncommon news broke out on June 12, a day marked out for the celebration of our democracy. It was the disqualification of Godwin Obaseki by the Screening Committee of All Progressives Congress (APC) for Edo State gubernatorial election. Mind you, I wasn’t expecting the party to make Obaseki their flag-bearer for the election but I expected that he would be allowed to contest the primaries.

I cannot just fathom how a sitting Governor whose credentials have never been questioned would be disqualified on flimsy excuses. When the news of the disqualification broke out, I needed to maintain my calm to know what premise they based the disqualification on. Not too long after that, I saw captions on ‘6 Reasons Why APC Disqualified Obaseki.’ I read all the alleged reasons and they were not worth one. Democracy was simply murdered on Democracy Day in Edo!

This is beyond Obaseki. In fact, I am not from Edo State but I reserve the authority to air my opinion on salient issues in the country. How can one man feel so big to dictate for an entire state? When I ask people what Obaseki’s sin is, the only reply I do get is ‘disloyalty’ and I ask, to who? To the people or just a man? Definitely, the latter is the answer. To satisfy a man, you need to betray the poor masses. This is not democracy. We got independence since 1960 and we should have gone past these shenanigans.

After his disqualification, some nauseating expressions like ‘no one fights his godfather and wins’, ‘you don’t bite the finger that feeds you’, among others started flying around on social media. This is to tell you that we are not yet of age. Well, I beg to disagree on their assertions. Here, I have compiled the list of five Nigerian governors who fought their godfathers or alleged benefactors and still triumphed. Not everyone will end in the Ambode way.

Udom Emmanuel (against Godswill Akpabio)

Against all odds, Akpabio brought Udom Emmanuel from Lagos State in 2015 to succeed him as the Governor of Akwa-Ibom State. It was really a tough fight between Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and All Progressives Congress (APC) but the PDP still emerged victorious both at the polls and the courts.

Not too long after that, Akpabio and Emmanuel’s relationship turned sour. Akpabio, the then Minority Leader of the Senate, lost control of the party structure in the state to Emmanuel. The enmity became glaring during the 2019 election. At a point, Akpabio confessed that he regretted bringing in Emmanuel as a governor but that was too late.

He joined the APC with the hope of defeating Udom Emmanuel but it turned a futile effort. Udom Emmanuel did not only win a reelection, the PDP swept the entire state with few exceptions. In fact, Akpabio lost his bid to return to the senate. The godson won! So, who says Obaseki cannot win?

Nyesom Wike (against Rotimi Amaechi)

I have never seen a political enmity like that of Wike and Amaechi of Rivers State all through my life! It is an open secret that Wike rose politically through Amaechi. Well, I know some people don’t like hearing this truth but there is no reason why it mustn’t be said. That Wike was chosen as a minister in 2011 somehow had Amaechi’s endorsement.

However, their relationship hit the rock towards 2015 when Amaechi had issues with Goodluck Ebele Jonathan and Wike had to nurture his gubernatorial ambition which he knew Amaechi would not support.

Amaechi, in the company of other stalwarts, abandoned the PDP to join the APC, a union which eventually produced President Muhammadu Buhari. Rivers practically became a war ground between the two factions in 2015. The situation wasn’t different in 2019. Yet, Wike won! I mean, the godson triumphed. All that you need is the people queuing behind you and some sort of stubbornness.

Aminu Tambuwal (Against Aliyu Wamakko)

Whether in the north or south, we have seen situations where the voice of the people counted! No political pundit could authoritatively say that Tambuwal could detach himself from Aliyu Wamakko and still be politically relevant.

Wamakko governed Sokoto State from 2007 to 2015 and eventually defected to All Progressives Congress (APC) where Tambuwal also followed suit. But in 2019,Tambuwal thought he had come of age and needed to nurture an ambition that wasn’t favorable to his mentor. Tambuwal left for the PDP while his boss remained in APC.

Unfortunately, Tambuwal’s main target, the presidential ticket of the opposition, didn’t come through. However, he stayed back in the party to contest for the governorship position. Wamakko avowed that Tambuwal was heading for a loss but that didn’t happen. Even though the election was very a close contest, the godson won. Again, this is evidence that all is not yet done for Obaseki.

Willie Obiano (against Peter Obi)

Willie Obiano, after riding on the back of Peter Obi to become the Governor of Anambra State, sent his predecessor packing from All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA). Peter Obi is a member of the PDP today because Obiano frustrated him out of theplatform where he governed for eight years.

When Peter Obi joined the PDP, he promised that Obiano was not going to be reelected. He avowed to fight him with the last pint of his blood. Ladies and gentlemen, Obiano won! In 2019 again, Peter Obi wanted to have a majority in the state house of assembly so as to initiate the possible impeachment of his successor but the agenda also failed. So, who said the godson will always lose?

Samuel Ortom (against George Akume)

After Samuel Ortom became the Governor of Benue State under All Progressives Congress (APC), his relationship with his godfather, George Akume, went bad. All effort to get their differences resolved turned abortive.

When it was obvious that he would not secure the APC ticket, he defected to the PDP. Let me call it his home. He had to bury his hatchet with his predecessor, Gabriel Suswam in order to defeat the APC. When he won the PDP primaries, he made it known that an end had come to godfatherism in the state. Of course, everyone knew he was referring to Akume.

Ortom said apart from winning a second term in office, he would also retire Akume from the senate. And at the end of the day, he achieved both aims! Akume lost and Ortom won.

All these cases are practical pointers to the fact that Obaseki can still win. For now, his most formidable alternative platform is the PDP. Most of Edo people are behind him. Just like Oshiomhole claimed to have put an end to godfather syndrome in the south-south state, Obaseki can do the same thing too.

Fortunately for him, every other state in the region is governed by a PDP governor. So, he would get all the necessary support from them. I am not saying Obaseki is a saint but democracy must be entrenched in Nigeria. It is a gradual process and this is one of it.

Sequel to the internal wrangling among the leaders and members of People's Democratic Party in Ekiti State over the ward congress which has almost torn the party apart. The repositioning movement under the leadership of Sen Biodun Olujimi and Sen Duro Faseyi had called on its members to remain calm.

It's on note that there is a litigation launched by the repositioning movement to correct some issues, to bring Ekiti PDP back to life and to end leadership tussles legally.

In furtherance of restoring peace, the national secretariat of the party had chosen to constitute caretaker committee headed by Sen. Hosea Agboola to manage the affairs of the party in Ekiti state for the next three months in accordance with the party constitution.

Sen. Biodun Olujimi had earlier declared her support for the caretaker committee and to stand by them whenever it's needed.

In respect to her statement, the distinguished Senator and the other revered leaders of the movement had called on their teeming supporters and the entire members of PDP in the state to cooperate with the agendas of the caretaker committee in the ongoing peace talks and amendment of mutual understanding to foster unity, peace and stability of the party.

Also the chairman of the repositioning group movement, Engr Alaba Agboola had urged the members of the movement to abide with the rules and regulations of the caretaker committee, regard their intention and to respect the leadership of the movement.

HealthNigeria’s Daily Toll Hits Record High As NCDC Confirms 681 New Cases By NAN by Purplebirdrep(op): 8:54am On Jun 12, 2020
Nigeria recorded its highest daily toll on Thursday with 681 new COVID-19 cases confirmed in 17 states.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) announced this on its official Twitter handle.

The centre said that as of June 11, Nigeria recorded a total of 14,554 cases with five deaths.

The agency said that no new state had reported a case in the last 24 hours.

NCDC said Lagos State reported more than half of the new cases with 345 infections with Rivers to state a distant second with 51 new cases.

Other states with new infections include Ogun (48), Gombe (47), Oyo (36), Imo (31), Delta (28), Kano (23), Bauchi (18), Edo (12), Katsina (12), Kaduna (9), Anambra (7), Jigawa (5), Kebbi (4), Ondo (4), and Nasarawa (1).

The NCDC said that till date, 14,554 cases have been confirmed, 9673 active cases 4,494 cases have been treated and discharged and 387 deaths have been recorded in 35 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

NAN reports that the health agency will commence the usage of the GeneXpert machines to test for COVID-19 cases beginning from June 14.

“We are ready to do that GeneXpert lab in locations and will start functioning on June 14,” the body said.

NAN reports that GeneXpert machines, manufactured by the US-based firm, Cepheid, is one of the most widely-used TB diagnostic tools globally.

Nigeria currently has at least 400 GeneXpert instruments deployed in 399 health facilities across the country meant for tuberculosis (TB) diagnosis.

NCDC said that with the challenge of limited kits for COVID-19 testing in the country, some of these machines in each state will be re-configured for COVID-19 testing.

“Each of the GeneXpert instruments in the country has 4-testing modules with a testing capacity of about 24 samples per day.

There are also available in the country two mobile laboratories equipped with two GeneXpert instruments each.

“These will be deployed as needed to support COVID-19 testing surge in target states,” NCDC stated.

The agency stated that it has been working hard over the last two weeks to distribute the cartridges to the first seven centres to train them to make sure they are ready and on June 14 they will start testing.

The NCDC, however, decried the poor turnout of test samples from the states across the country.

The body stated that though the available laboratories could test up to 10,000 samples per day, they were only working at about 10 to 20 per cent of their capacity.

“The labs are there, the samples are not coming in as sufficiently as we want. We have this weekend for every state to push harder,” it stated.
PoliticsInsecurity: President Buhari Has Failed Nigerians – Arewa Youth Group by Purplebirdrep(op): 8:45am On Jun 12, 2020
The Northern Youth Council of Nigeria, NYCN, has expressed concern over the incessant killings in the country calling on the leadership to rise to the occasion to save lives and property.

The Arewa group noted that it was unfortunate that those saddled with the responsibility of protecting citizens’ lives and properties no longer do so.

The President of the group, Isah Abubakar, in a statement, explained that the government of President Muhammadu Buhari has witnessed the killings of thousands of Nigerians more than any other government in the history of the country.

The statement alleged that “The government of President Mohammed Buhari has witnessed the killings of thousands of Nigerians more than any other government in the history of this country, this categorically means that the President Buhari-led administration is one of the most irresponsible governments in our history.”

For the progress and security of the country, the President must learn to let go of irresponsible people in his government, adding that the Service chiefs must be relieved of their appointments and Ministers should be reshuffled.

It explained that President Buhari must learn how to hire and fire anybody in his cabinet that fails to perform, recalling that security topped Buhari’s agenda during 2015 campaigns, but that the security situation is worse than it used to be.

“It’s a fact that President Buhari has failed his citizens from all parts of the nation and northerners are highly disappointed in his leadership,” the statement opined.

The statement noted that President Buhari can still make a change if he adheres strictly to the good counsel of the people by doing the needful.

PoliticsMalami Takes Over Prosecution Of Alleged Taraba Kidnap Kingpin, Wadume, Others by Purplebirdrep(op): 1:38pm On Jun 04, 2020
Alex Enumah in Abuja

The Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami (SAN) has taken over the prosecution of the alleged Taraba State kidnap kingpin, Mr. Bala Hamisu, popularly called Wadume and 19 others from the Inspector General of Police (IG), Mr. Mohammed Adamu.

The IG had on February 3, 2020, dragged Wadume and his co-defendants among whom are two police officers and 10 soldiers before the Abuja Division of the Federal High Court on a 16-count criminal charge bordering on terrorism, murder, kidnapping and illegal arms.

When the case came up yesterday before Justice Binta Nyako, only six out of the 20 defendants, including Wadume, were present in court.

However, a lawyer in the office of the AGF, Mr. Labaran Magaji, who announced appearance for the prosecution, informed the court that the AGF took over the case and received the case file from the police on Tuesday.

Magaji accordingly requested an adjournment to enable him work towards bringing all the defendants to court at the next adjournment.

“The AGF office applied to take over the prosecution of the criminal charge. We were handed over the file yesterday (Tuesday). The case has about 20 defendants, but only six defendants are present in court.

“In the circumstances, we shall be asking for a short adjournment for the purpose of bringing all the suspects named in the

charge. “The prosecution shall do the needful to ensure that the case takes off immediately”, he said.

Defence lawyers that were present in court did not oppose the request for adjournment.

Justice Nyako in a short ruling adjourned the matter to June 8, 2020. Nyako had ordered the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Tukur Buratai, to release 10 army officers for the ongoing criminal prosecution.

The 10 officers were charged alongside Wadume and others.

Justice Nyako made the order for the soldiers to be produced, after the prosecuting lawyer, Mr. Simon Lough, told the court that the army authorities ‘snubbed’ the letter by the police requesting the 10 defendants to be produced for arraignment.

He had told the court that the police authorities had written the Chief of Army Staff asking for the soldiers since January 2020 but that they failed to comply.

The prosecution added that, “Sections 89 and 159 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) 2015, empower my lord to compel the Chief of Army Staff to produce the 2nd to the 11th defendants for prosecution.

“On the basis of the provisions, we, therefore, urge my lord to issue an order to the Chief of Army Staff to produce the defendants for arraignment.”

The soldiers among the defendants are Captain Tijjani Balarabe; Staff Sgt. David Isaiah; Sgt. Ibrahim Mohammed; Corporal Bartholomew Obanye; Private Mohammed Nura; Lance Corporal Okorozie Gideon; Corporal Markus Michael; L/Corporal Nvenaweimoeimi Akpagra; Staff Sgt. Abdullahi Adamu, and Private Ebele Emmanuel.

The other 10 defendants are: Wadume, ASP Aondona Iorbee; Inspector Aliyu Dadje; Auwalu Bala, aka Omo Razor; Uba Bala (aka Uba Belu); Ahmad Suleiman (aka Dan Ball); Bashir Waziri, (aka Baba runs); Zubairu Abdullahi (aka Basho); Hafizu Bala (aka Maiwelder); and Rayyanu Abdul.

They were charged for the killing of three policemen and two civilians attached to the Inspector General of Police’s Intelligence Response Team, who had gone to Ibi, Taraba State, to arrest the kidnap kingpin.

Five other police officers were injured in the attack by soldiers from Battalion 93, Takum, led by Capt Balarabe, on August 6, 2019.

The attack led to the escape of the kidnap kingpin who was later re-arrested at a village in Kano.

I have returned to PDP in Ekiti to make it stronger, Segun Oni replies Fayose

Former Governor of Ekiti State, Chief Segun Oni, has assured another former governor, Mr. Ayodele Fayose and the state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that his mission in the party is to encourage teamwork and build fellowship among members for a verile party.

Fayose, through his media aide, Lere Olayinka, had said there won’t be red carpet reception for the former governor on his return to the party, advising him to go for his registration at the ward level.

“Fayose didn’t say Oni is not welcome in PDP and don’t forget membership of a political party is optional. What he said was that if you are coming back to the party after leaving for about six years, there won’t be red carpet reception. Like when he went and came back in 2012, there was no red carpet reception for him then. Fayose said whoever that is coming should quietly go and register in his or her ward which is the normal thing to do,” he had said.

But Oni, through a statement by the Director General of his group, Atunse Ekiti Movement, Dr Ifeoluwa Arowosoge, described Oni’s return to the opposition party whose platform he was elected governor in 2007 as home-coming

According to Arowosoge, his quest was to join hands with other leaders to reposition the party ahead of future elections especially the 2022 governorship poll.

“Mr Segun Oni and his numerous supporters are committed to building an inclusive party that would work to protect the interest of all its members. Teamwork and fellowship building would be the hallmarks of our engagements, interactions and participation in all activities of the party.

“We are all excited to be back home to join hands with our compatriots in the strengthening and repositioning of our great party, the PDP, in its quest for good governance in Ekiti State.

“Our return to the party was motivated by selfless considerations and the numerous calls by concerned Ekiti indigenes, home and abroad, on our political leader, Segun Oni, to deploy his forthright and honest leadership in advancing the good of the party

You Are Not Welcomed in PDP, Fayose Tells Oni

Chuks Okocha in Abuja

The former Governor of Ekiti State, Mr. Ayo Fayose, has stated that former Governor of the state, Mr. Segun Oni, is not welcome to the Ekiti State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), “because he is a paperweight.”

Fayose stated this yesterday while reacting to a declaration letter dated May 24, 2020, which was addressed to the PDP Caretaker Committee by Oni, who is a former deputy national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), indicating his interest to return to the PDP.

Oni’s decision to return to the PDP seems to have reawakened the longtime rift between the two former governors, Fayose and Oni respectively, as Fayose flagrantly discarded the Oni’s intentions owing to “his political irrelevance.”

Describing Oni and his group as paperweights, Fayose, who forwarded the Oni’s letter to the official PDP WhatsApp platform, said Oni and his group are not welcomed in PDP.

Fayose said: “Majority of these Oni’s fellow returnees is nothing but known or no ‘weight’, whose names are simply to fill the gaps in desperation for recognition. They are not welcome.”

Meanwhile, Oni’s intentions to return to PDP has been described as a welcome development by majority of the party members, especially those in Senator Biodun Olujimi’s camp, stressing that Oni’s political clout is needed to further compliment the progressive efforts of Olujimi and other leaders who are poised to reposition the party.
