The decade-long duopoly of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo on the coveted Ballon d'Or is going to end this year.
According to reports, the winner of the 2018 Ballon d'Or is Luka Modric.

The 63rd edition Ballon d'Or will be held in the French capital on December 3. And Onda Cero, a Spanish radio has already announced the winner as the Real Madrid's Croatian midfielder, ahead of Ronaldo, now at Juventus, and Atletico Madrid's French World Cup winner Antoine Griezmann.

Last week, reports have emerged that Modric and French World Cup winners Kylian Mbappe and Raphael Varane were the top three after the votes were counted.

Modric, after a brilliant World Cup in Russia earlier this year, has been the bookmaker's favourite to pick the award. But, it will still be considered a shock to beat both Messi and Ronaldo.

In 2007, both Messi and Ronaldo finished in the top three for the first time, behind winner Kaka. The following year, Ronaldo won the trophy thus starting the duopoly.

After a spell at USL Championship side Phoenix Rising, Drogba confirmed on Thursday that he would be hanging up his boots after a decorated career.

Former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba announced his retirement, calling time on a 20-year career in which the bullish centre forward won four English Premier League titles and the 2012 Champions League.

Drogba, who had been playing in the United States for Phoenix Rising, had two spells at Chelsea, scoring 164 goals in 381 games having spearheaded the west London club's revival under owner Roman Abramovich.

He also won four FA Cups and three League Cup victories during his time in west London.

Barcelona have picked up some of the English Premier League's biggest superstars in recent memory, but Liverpool can breathe a collective sigh of relief as the LaLiga giants are reportedly 'banned' from signing any of their players for the next two years.

According to Spanish radio station Cadena Ser, Barca side have been prohibited from signing any Liverpool players for another two years.

The Reds sold Brazilian playmaker Philippe Coutinho to the Spanish giants in January 2018 for a then club record £106m (N49bn) transfer, while the total deal could earn Liverpool £142m (N65.9bn) with add-ons.

While the LaLiga champions still owe the Reds £36m (N16.7bn) from the overall deal, it’s now come to light that Jurgen Klopp's outfit inserted a specific clause into the Coutinho deal preventing them from trying to sign any more players for a three year period.

UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin says a European Super League "will never happen".


Ceferin and Andrea Agnelli, chairman of the European Club Association that represents more than 200 top teams, have made their positions clear following a report that a leaked document revealed secret discussions taking place over a possible new league competition.

"The Super League will not happen," Ceferin told BBC Sport.

"It is in a way a fiction now or a dream."

Richard Scudamore is set to leave his current post as executive chairman at the end of the year after nearly 20 years in charge, with his role being split in two.

Dinnage — who is currently global president of Discovery’s Animal Planet — will take up her new role in early 2019, while the search for a non-executive chair for the Premier League will now begin.

She is the third person and the first woman to lead the organisation, after Scudamore and his predecessor Rick Parry.

Mario Balotelli has stuck the knife into Manchester United after the former Manchester City striker mocked their bitter rivals on Instagram following Sunday's derby defeat.

City claimed a comfortable 3-1 win over Jose Mourinho's side with David Silva, Sergio Aguero and Ilkay Gundogan netting for the English Premier League champions.

Balotelli, who played for City between 2010 and 2013, took to Instagram to mock United after the game and reaffirm his allegiance for the blue side of Manchester.

The Italian, who currently plays for Nice in France's Ligue 1, commented on City's Instagram post of goal scoring hero Aguero.

He wrote: "Once a blue always a blue!!! Man Utd LOL AGAIN AND AGAIN!..."

Chelsea will not join Liverpool on 30 points after Everton stifled the Blues in a scoreless draw at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
A chippy affair, both teams had their chances in London.

Chelsea has 28 points and will finish two points back of Liverpool and at least one behind Man City. While Everton stays ninth.

Earlier, Liverpool beat Fulham 2-0 at Anfield this afternoon to go top of the English Premier League table.

Man City will reclaim the top spot if they beat United today. They are currently playing 1-0 against the Red Devils.

Liverpool went atop the English Premier League table for the moment following a 2-0 win over Fulham at Anfield this afternoon.

Mohamed Salah scored 13 seconds after a Fulham goal was ruled offside, and Xherdan Shaqiri also scored as the Reds moved to 30 points.

That’s one point more than Man City, who hosts Manchester United at 5:30pm and three ahead of Chelsea who are currently meeting with Everton.

Manchester United directors had no problem with manager Jose Mourinho's taunting of Juventus fans last week.

Mourinho cupped his ear to the crowd after Manchester United's dramatic Champions League win last week Wednesday night in reaction to the home fans, who had dished out a non-stop barrage of abuse.

But a United insider ­defended his manager's ­actions insisting to the Mirror:

“Considering what had happened during the game it was understandable that Jose acted in that manner.

“It just wasn't nasty personal insults, he was forced to put up with, but he was also spat at.Some of the spittle also landed on Jose's assistants. It wasn't very pleasant.

“What he did was just to show some emotion after a tremendous win."

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has taken a swipe at Pep Guardiola's mega spending at Manchester City.
Mourinho is clearly irked about his neighbour's £185m ­investment to land defenders Kyle Walker, Benjamin Mendy, ­Danilo and Aymeric Laporte last year.

He said: “If I need a full-back and I was able to buy four, it would be easier. So, when I needed a full-back, when I wasn't happy with Luke Shaw's level, the easiest thing would have been to buy four new players...."

Crystal Palace 0 - 1 Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham Hotspur beat Crystal Palace 1-0 at Selhurst Park on Saturday as young center back Juan Foyth scored a second half winner and his first goal for the English Premier League club.

In soggy conditions in south London there was little between the teams but Foyth headed home the first goal of his career to give Spurs all three points.

With the win Tottenham are in fourth on 27 points, while Palace are in 16th place on eight points.

Leicester City 0 - 0 Burnley

There was a rousing tribute before the match for fallen Leicester City owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha.

It was touching and electric. Then the match began, and it just couldn’t live up to the early jolt of emotion.

Leicester was the better side but couldn’t find the breakthrough as Burnley held on for a 0-0 draw at the King Power Stadium in the first home game following the helicopter crash that claimed the life of the club’s owner.

Burnley will be happiest with the point, a valuable one moving them to nine on the season. For Leicester City, they are able to climb into the top half with 17 points.

After the game, Leicester City players did a lap to thank the fans, while former manager Claudio Raneiri was on the field as well in a touching moment.

Southampton 1 - 1 Watford

Jose Holebas’ deflected 82nd minute strike salvaged a point for Watford against Southampton at St Mary's.

Manolo Gabbiadini had given Saints a first half lead, and both teams were denied goals before Holebas’ marker.

The point gained gives Watford 20, and 7th place. Southampton is 17th with 8 points.
