Sports / Ballon D'or Winner Leaked! A First-Time Winner Revealed... by queenonyebiri1(f): 7:47am On Nov 29, 2018
The decade-long duopoly of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo on the coveted Ballon d'Or is going to end this year.
According to reports, the winner of the 2018 Ballon d'Or is Luka Modric.

The 63rd edition Ballon d'Or will be held in the French capital on December 3. And Onda Cero, a Spanish radio has already announced the winner as the Real Madrid's Croatian midfielder, ahead of Ronaldo, now at Juventus, and Atletico Madrid's French World Cup winner Antoine Griezmann.

Last week, reports have emerged that Modric and French World Cup winners Kylian Mbappe and Raphael Varane were the top three after the votes were counted.

Modric, after a brilliant World Cup in Russia earlier this year, has been the bookmaker's favourite to pick the award. But, it will still be considered a shock to beat both Messi and Ronaldo.

In 2007, both Messi and Ronaldo finished in the top three for the first time, behind winner Kaka. The following year, Ronaldo won the trophy thus starting the duopoly.

Oh, how I wish Modric will end the duopoly of Messi and Ronaldo!

Sports / Wednesday's UCL Roundup: Atletico And 3 Other Clubs Progress; PSG Beat Liverpool by queenonyebiri1(f): 12:45am On Nov 29, 2018
Here's last night's UEFA Champions League roundup...

Atletico Madrid 2-0 Monaco

Atletico confirmed progress in the early kick-off and ended the European hopes of Thierry Henry's young Monaco side.

Koke struck Atletico's fastest-ever UEFA Champions League goal in the second minute and midway through the first half Antoine Griezmann added another.

Monaco improved after the interval but substitute Radamel Falcao, given a hero's welcome by his former fans in Madrid, missed a late penalty following a Stefan Savic hand ball for which he received a second yellow card.

Borussia Dortmund 0-0 Club Brugge

A point was all Dortmund needed to book their round of 16 spot and that was what they got.

The home side had the better of the few available chances while Club Brugge will be heading for the UEFA Europa League round of 32.

PSV Eindhoven 1-2 Barcelona

Already through before last night, Barcelona sealed first place in their group for a 12th year running, and a record 17th year overall, after a 61st-minute goal by Lionel Messi, whose free-kick shortly afterwards was turned in by Gerard Pique.

PSV hit the woodwork twice at 0-0 and Luuk de Jong pulled one back late on, but the defeat consigned them to fourth position.

Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 Inter Milan

Christian Eriksen's strike ten minutes from time kept Spurs in the last-16 hunt and lifted them into second, above Inter (who would have been through with a draw) on head-to-head away goals.

Harry Winks had rattled the bar in a strong Tottenham performance and they must now secure as many points at Barcelona as Inter do at home to PSV.

Paris Saint-Germain 2-1 Liverpool

Paris began the night with elimination a possibility, yet instead are now a victory at Crvena zvezda away from the round of 16.

Juan Bernat opened the scoring on 13 minutes, then Neymar became the first Brazilian to register 31 UEFA Champions League goals.

Just before half-time James Milner reduced arrears from the penalty spot on his 150th Liverpool appearance but Paris held firm and Liverpool have to beat Napoli to have a chance of progress.

CHECK OUT HOW THINGS ARE IN THE UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

Sports / Tuesday's UCL: Bayern, Real Madrid And Five Other Clubs Go Into Round Of 16 by queenonyebiri1(f): 12:16am On Nov 28, 2018
Bayern Munich 5-1 Benfica

Ajax's early win meant Benfica required victory by two goals or more to have any chance of preserving their last-16 hopes – but Bayern confirmed their progress in comfortable fashion.

Arjen Robben claimed two trademark curling goals before Robert Lewandowski headed his 50th in the UEFA Champions League.

Teenage Benfica sub Gedson Fernandes pulled one back within a minute of his half-time introduction but Lewandowski made it 4-1 with another header and Franck Ribéry added the fifth, his first goal at this level since March 2015.

Benfica will finish third and transfer to the UEFA Europa League.

Roma 0-2 Real Madrid

CSKA's loss in the early game meant both teams were through before kick-off and the holders clinched top spot in the group with victory.

Gareth Bale and Lucas Vazquez scored early in the second half on a night when Madrid got past the group stage for a record 23rd time in as many attempts, the 22nd season in succession.

Lyon 2-2 Manchester City

City knew a point would clinch a round of 16 berth, yet Lyon's hopes of early progress were dashed by Shakhtar's late winner at Hoffenheim.

Here, OL struck first early in the second half through Maxwel Cornet but seven minutes later Aymeric Laporte nodded City level.

Although Cornet then restored Lyon's lead with nine minutes left, Sergio Aguero quickly made it 2-2, heading in Riyad Mahrez's corner.

Sports / 'If You Feel Pressure, stay Home And Watch On TV': Mourinho Tells His Players by queenonyebiri1(f): 7:55am On Nov 27, 2018
Jose Mourinho says his players would be better off staying at home and watching Manchester United on television if they cannot handle the pressure of playing at Old Trafford.
Saturday’s drab goalless draw at home to Crystal Palace means United have only won three of their nine games at Old Trafford in all competitions this season.

The opening two Champions League Group H encounters at home to Valencia and Juventus ended with a draw and a defeat respectively as United failed to score on both occasions.

They face Young Boys on Tuesday night looking to avoid an unwanted record of going three European games at Old Trafford without a goal for the first time in the club’s history.

Mourinho was reluctant to accept that United are better away from home at the moment, but he had an emphatic message for any player who felt cowed by the prospect of playing at Old Trafford.

"If you feel pressure stay at home and when I say “home” I don't say stadium home, I say home home and watch on TV," said the United boss, who has orchestrated away wins over Young Boys and Juventus in this season’s Champions League.

Sports / De Gea Set To Become Highest Paid Goalie In The World With PSG Move - Report by queenonyebiri1(f): 11:27am On Nov 25, 2018
David De Gea is set to become the highest-paid goalkeeper in the world by joining Paris St-Germain in the summer when his contract runs out at Manchester United, according to a report on the Dailymail.

De Gea, 28, has been stalling on signing a new deal at Old Trafford in the knowledge that a bumper £300,000 (N140million) -a-week is on offer at PSG, who could get round any Financial Fair Play restrictions by selling Neymar to Real Madrid and building their team exclusively around Kylian Mbappe.

The Spain international could be set to earn around £15.5million (N7billion) a year in wages with the French giants, taking his potential salary to over £60m (N28bn) if he were to sign a four-year deal in Paris.

United are already looking at a number of goalkeepers who could replace De Gea with England's No 1 Jordan Pickford of interest.

Sports / Mourinho Slams Man United Players For 'lack Of Heart' After Goalless Home Draw by queenonyebiri1(f): 11:01pm On Nov 24, 2018
Jose Mourinho accused some of Manchester United's under-performing players of lacking "heart" against Crystal Palace - an attribute the manager believes is the bare minimum for his stuttering side.

Boos echoed around Old Trafford as the hosts floundered against struggling Palace, who were unfortunate not to return south with more than a 0-0 draw.

United are now 14 points behind table-topping Manchester City - the same gap there is to rock-bottom Huddersfield - and, perhaps more worryingly, let this opportunity to bolster their top-four chances pass them by.

Mourinho had talked up those hopes ahead of the match and did not hold back after this "bad result" against Palace.

"Not enough intensity, not enough desire," the United boss said.

"So, I think we played a game like 'one more game' and I don't think the game is 'one more game'. I think it is a game we really need to win.

"If we played with the same philosophy against Young Boys (in the Champions League on Tuesday) then we don't win and then we have to go to Valencia to win the game in Valencia.

"So, there are matches that are special matches and that not just one more - and this one was not just one more.

Sports / Man United Boss Mourinho Accuses Casillas Of Ousting David Gea From Spanish Team by queenonyebiri1(f): 10:03am On Nov 24, 2018
Jose Mourinho has reopened his feud with former Spain goalkeeper Iker Casillas on Friday after claiming he is behind a campaign to oust David de Gea from the national team.

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho believes he knows who is behind the Spanish media criticism of David de Gea.

Mourinho has accused former Real Madrid and Spain star Casillas of trying to undermine United keeper De Gea so he can earn a recall for Spain and add to his record 167 caps.

The United boss was asked how De Gea has been affected by criticism in his native Spain and made it clear he felt Porto keeper Casillas – who he fell out with at Real – was behind it.

“But why criticism in Spain? Do you know?" said Mourinho.

“I know, because there is somebody very powerful thinking about jumping again.

“But it's very difficult when you have the best goalkeeper in the world in front of you."

Sports / Man United's Lukaku Blasts Team-mates Who Can't Handle Criticism From Mourinho by queenonyebiri1(f): 3:27pm On Nov 22, 2018
Romelu Lukaku has fired a message of advice to players who cannot deal with criticism from Jose Mourinho.

The Manchester United manager has endured his most tumultuous season at Old Trafford to date, coming to blows with Paul Pogba, Anthony Martial and Antonio Valencia in just a few short months.

The Belgium international, who has scored just four goals for his club all season, maintains his relationship with the manager is good, but suggests those who have been on the receiving end of Mourinho's direct style of management must 'deal with it'.

"I think he has a good relationship with the players," Lukaku told Bleacher Report.

"I don't really pay attention to what his relationship is with the other players, to be honest. I don't think it's something that should affect me.

"If he [Mourinho] has an argument with somebody I mean, deal with it, man. You're a grown-a*** man, deal with it."

Sports / Barca Banned From Signing Liverpool Players For Next Two Years by queenonyebiri1(f): 6:48am On Nov 22, 2018
Barcelona have picked up some of the English Premier League's biggest superstars in recent memory, but Liverpool can breathe a collective sigh of relief as the LaLiga giants are reportedly 'banned' from signing any of their players for the next two years.

According to Spanish radio station Cadena Ser, Barca side have been prohibited from signing any Liverpool players for another two years.

The Reds sold Brazilian playmaker Philippe Coutinho to the Spanish giants in January 2018 for a then club record £106m (N49bn) transfer, while the total deal could earn Liverpool £142m (N65.9bn) with add-ons.

While the LaLiga champions still owe the Reds £36m (N16.7bn) from the overall deal, it’s now come to light that Jurgen Klopp's outfit inserted a specific clause into the Coutinho deal preventing them from trying to sign any more players for a three year period.

That means Barcelona may not approach Liverpool for any of their stars until 2021 and the only way Barcelona could sign any Liverpool player in this period is if the Reds choose to sell to the Catalans.

Sports / Fulham Announce Claudio Ranieri As New Manager After Sacking Slavisa Jokanovic by queenonyebiri1(f): 1:09pm On Nov 14, 2018
Fulham have sacked manager Slavisa Jokanovic and appointed Claudio Ranieri.
The English football club currently sit bottom of the English Premier League table after only one win this season.
It has prompted Shahid Khan, Chairman of Fulham Football Club to act and appoint Ranieri.

Ranieri praised the quality in the squad and thanked Khan for the opportunity.

Ranieri said: "It is an honour to accept Mr. Khan's invitation and opportunity to lead Fulham, a fantastic club with tradition and history.

"The objective at Fulham should never be to merely survive in the Premier League. We must at all times be a difficult opponent and should expect to succeed. This Fulham squad has exceptional talent that is contrary to its position in the table.

"I know this team is very capable of better performances, which we will work on straight away as we prepare for Southampton at the Cottage."

Khan said: "I wasn't anticipating having to make this announcement related to Slavisa and wish the circumstances were such that I didn't have to, but our path this season has led me to make what I know is the correct decision, at the right time, for our players, the club and our supporters.

"Slavisa will always have my appreciation and respect for everything he did to return Fulham to top-flight football.

"I am hoping everyone in the Fulham Family shares my heartfelt sentiments for Slavisa and joins me in wishing him success and good fortune, wherever his next stop may be.

"Making a change without having the right answer or succession plan was not an option, so having someone of Claudio's calibre ready to accept our challenge was comforting but, most of all, essential.

"Claudio is risk-free and ready-made for the Premier League, and particularly so for what we need at this moment at Fulham.

"His recent body of work with Leicester City is literally legendary, and then you look at Claudio's experience with Chelsea and big clubs throughout Europe, and it's pretty evident we are welcoming an extraordinary football man at Fulham FC."

Sports / Premier League Names First Female Chief Executive by queenonyebiri1(f): 9:36pm On Nov 13, 2018
The Premier League has confirmed Susanna Dinnage as its new chief executive, making her the first female to occupy the position.

Richard Scudamore is set to leave his current post as executive chairman at the end of the year after nearly 20 years in charge, with his role being split in two.

Dinnage — who is currently global president of Discovery’s Animal Planet — will take up her new role in early 2019, while the search for a non-executive chair for the Premier League will now begin.

She is the third person and the first woman to lead the organisation, after Scudamore and his predecessor Rick Parry.

“I am excited at the prospect of taking on this fantastic role,” Dinnage said.

“The Premier League means so much to so many people.

“It represents the pinnacle of professional sport and the opportunity to lead such a dynamic and inspirational organization is a great privilege.

“With the support of clubs and the team, I look forward to extending the success of the League for many years to come.”

Part of Scudamore’s legacy has been the astronomical rise in worldwide TV rights deals, which are estimated to be $10.8 billion for 2019-2022.

When the 59-year-old took over, UK television rights were worth just $870 million — they now currently stand at £5.7 billion.

Dinnage will join the Premier League after 10 years at Discovery, where she was appointed as Animal Planet’s first global president in 2017.

“We are very pleased to appoint such a capable leader to this important role,” said Bruce Buck, Chelsea chairman and chairman of the Premier League’s Nominations Committee.

“We had a very strong field, but Susanna was the outstanding choice given her track record in managing complex businesses through transformation and digital disruption.

“She is a leading figure in the broadcasting industry, a proven business executive and a great developer of people. She is ideally suited to the role and we are confident she will be able to take the Premier League on to new heights.

“Richard Scudamore, having provided exceptional stewardship for almost 20 years, will leave us at the end of the year in great shape and with an excellent executive team and board able to fully support Susanna.”

Sports / 'ozil Rejected £1M-A-WEEK Offers To Sign Arsenal Extension,' Says Player's Agent by queenonyebiri1(f): 3:30pm On Nov 13, 2018
Arsenal playmaker Mesut Ozil rejected offers worth £1million-a-week from Asia earlier this year, according to the Evening Standard.
The German instead committed his long-term future to the Gunners, penning a three-year extension in February worth £350,000-a-week deal, making him the highest paid player in the club's history.

And Ozil's agent, Dr Erkut Sogut, has revealed why the deal took so long to complete.

"We had some really big offers from Asia - there were some crazy offers," revealed Ozil's agent, Dr Erkut Sogut, via the Evening Standard.

"But, for Mesut, money was by no means the biggest factor.

"Money is definitely one important thing to consider, but people must remember that footballing ability is just one aspect of a contract negotiation. The commercial impact of a footballer is crucial nowadays.

"Mesut has the biggest social media following of any player in the Premier League and I just read that his shirt numbers (sales) were the largest at the club. At the end of the day, this is all information that has to be taken into consideration..."

Sports / Ibrahimovic Beats Out Rooney For Newcomer Of The Year Award by queenonyebiri1(f): 3:11pm On Nov 13, 2018
Major League Soccer announced on Monday that LA Galaxy forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic has won the league's Newcomer of the Year award for 2018.

The award recognizes the season's most impactful new player who has prior professional experience. Ibrahimovic made his Galaxy debut on March 31, scoring twice in a come-from-behind 4-3 win over LAFC in the first ever meeting of the Los Angeles clubs.

Even after such a strong first impression, the former Sweden international would only get better. By season's end, he'd compiled 22 goals and 10 assists in 27 appearances.

He's just the third ever player to record a 20-goal, 10-assist season in MLS history. And his 32 combined goals and assists is the sixth most in league history.

Ibrahimovic's Newcomer of the Year win was a narrow one.

Among votes from his fellow players, club members and the media, the Galaxy No. 9 averaged 36.36 percent of the vote.

In second place was D.C. United's Wayne Rooney, who accumulated an average of 32.25 percent of the vote following his impressive arrival in July.

At this point the striker, who is on loan from Juventus, lost all control and erupted into a fit of rage.

Despite bearing the brunt of Higuain's fury, Ronaldo was keen to stick up for his opponent in a post-match interview, revealing what he said to the striker on the pitch.
"I told him to calm down, as he risked an even heavier ban," the five-time Ballon d'Or winner told Sky Sport Italia...."

Sports / Man United Directors Back Mourinho Over Juve Taunts by queenonyebiri1(f): 1:50pm On Nov 11, 2018
Manchester United directors had no problem with manager Jose Mourinho's taunting of Juventus fans last week.

Mourinho cupped his ear to the crowd after Manchester United's dramatic Champions League win last week Wednesday night in reaction to the home fans, who had dished out a non-stop barrage of abuse.

But a United insider defended his manager's actions insisting to the Mirror:

“Considering what had happened during the game it was understandable that Jose acted in that manner.

“It just wasn't nasty personal insults, he was forced to put up with, but he was also spat at.Some of the spittle also landed on Jose's assistants. It wasn't very pleasant.

“What he did was just to show some emotion after a tremendous win."

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has taken a swipe at Pep Guardiola's mega spending at Manchester City.
Mourinho is clearly irked about his neighbour's £185m investment to land defenders Kyle Walker, Benjamin Mendy, Danilo and Aymeric Laporte last year.

He said: “If I need a full-back and I was able to buy four, it would be easier. So, when I needed a full-back, when I wasn't happy with Luke Shaw's level, the easiest thing would have been to buy four new players...."

Sports / EPL Saturday'sWrap: Foyth Scores 1st Goal To Give Spurs Win; Leicester City Draw by queenonyebiri1(f): 10:20pm On Nov 10, 2018
A roundup of all Saturday's English Premier League action.

Crystal Palace 0 - 1 Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham Hotspur beat Crystal Palace 1-0 at Selhurst Park on Saturday as young center back Juan Foyth scored a second half winner and his first goal for the English Premier League club.

In soggy conditions in south London there was little between the teams but Foyth headed home the first goal of his career to give Spurs all three points.

With the win Tottenham are in fourth on 27 points, while Palace are in 16th place on eight points.

Leicester City 0 - 0 Burnley

There was a rousing tribute before the match for fallen Leicester City owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha.

It was touching and electric. Then the match began, and it just couldn’t live up to the early jolt of emotion.

Leicester was the better side but couldn’t find the breakthrough as Burnley held on for a 0-0 draw at the King Power Stadium in the first home game following the helicopter crash that claimed the life of the club’s owner.

Burnley will be happiest with the point, a valuable one moving them to nine on the season. For Leicester City, they are able to climb into the top half with 17 points.

After the game, Leicester City players did a lap to thank the fans, while former manager Claudio Raneiri was on the field as well in a touching moment.

Southampton 1 - 1 Watford

Jose Holebas’ deflected 82nd minute strike salvaged a point for Watford against Southampton at St Mary's.

Manolo Gabbiadini had given Saints a first half lead, and both teams were denied goals before Holebas’ marker.

The point gained gives Watford 20, and 7th place. Southampton is 17th with 8 points.
