Barcelona's last 16 second-leg meeting with Napoli in the UEFA Champions League will be played behind closed doors, the Spanish club have confirmed on Tuesday.

In a bid to contain the coronavirus outbreak in Spain, no supporters from either club will be allowed entry into Camp Nou for the European clash on March 18.

Italian prime minister Giuseppe Conte has announced that Serie A is suspended indefinitely as the country continues to struggle to contain the spread of Covid-19.

With latest figures revealing 463 people had died from coronavirus from a total of 9,172 infections, the Italian government has put the country in lockdown.

The measures, which had already been in place in Italy's north, include banning public gatherings and restricting all movement other than for work and emergency services.

Serie A has had several matches recently behind closed doors, including the Derby D'Italia between Juventus and Inter, but the new restrictions will make the competition impossible to continue.

Conte told a press conference:

There is no more time, the numbers tell us there is a significant increase in the contagion, in intensive care and the deaths. Our habits have to change, we must sacrifice something for the good of all of Italy. This is why we will adopt even more stringent measures.

I will sign the new decree, which can be summed up with the phrase ‘I am staying at home.’ There are no more red zones, there is just an Italy that is protected.

We must avoid travel unless for proven work reasons, health reasons or other necessities. We ban large public gatherings.

We also have more stringent measures in mind for sporting events. Serie A and all sporting tournaments in general are suspended. All the fans must accept that.


Italy's new conditions will come into effect on Tuesday morning and affect the country's 60 million population.

English Premier League and Football Association chiefs are reportedly working on contingency plans that could see the English top-flight campaign played behind closed doors if the coronavirus spreads.

A number of sporting events have already been postponed or cancelled over the past few weeks due to concerns over spreading the virus, which has so far claimed the lives of more than 3,000 people.

According to The Sun, there is a chance that the English Premier League season could conclude with games played in front of no supporters, with little room to manoeuvre in terms of rescheduling fixtures at a later date.

Manchester United have banned new signing Odion Ighalo from the club's training ground due to fears over Coronavirus.

The striker, on loan from Chinese Super League side Shanghai Shenua is being made to train away from the AON Complex at Carrington while he is in the 14-day incubation period, according to the Mirror.

United have taken the precaution despite the fact that Ighalo did not arrive in the UK from Wuhan, where the virus originated.

According to Danish publication dr, the show 'Bendtner and Philine' is commissioned by Discovery Networks and will hit screens in the spring.

Former Arsenal forward Bendtner, capped 81 times by Denmark, is currently without a club after departing Copenhagen in 2019 following a short spell.

Kobe Bryant was reportedly killed in a helicopter crash in Calabasas, California, on Sunday morning.

The 41-year-old former Los Angeles Lakers basketball star's shocking death was confirmed by TMZ.

The outlet reported that Bryant was traveling with four other people in his private helicopter when it crashed, killing everyone on board.

Officials with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department responded to reports of the crash near Las Virgenes Rd and Willow Glen St in Calabasas at around 10am after a fire broke out.

The cause of the crash is under investigation. It is unclear where the chopper departed from or where it was headed when it went down.

Bryant is survived by his wife Vanessa and their four daughters - Gianna, Natalia and Bianca and newborn Capri.

Football fans are putting themselves at risk of a heart attack due to the intense levels of physical stress caused by watching their team, new research has found.

An Oxford study collected the saliva of 40 football fans before, during and after three World Cup matches in 2014. The research found that levels of the hormone cortisol shot up during the games.

The hormone is recognised as being dangerous in increasing blood pressure and causing strain on the heart. Stress levels between men and women did not differ during the course of the game.

Dr Martha Newson, researcher at Oxford University's Centre for the Study of Social Cohesion via the i, said:

Cortisol rocketed during live games for the fans who were highly fused to the team.

It was particularly high during games where their team lost. Interestingly, there were no differences in cortisol concentrations between men and women.

Despite preconceptions that men tend to be more bonded to their football teams, women were in fact found to be slightly more bonded to their national team than the men.

Manchester United are reportedly lining up a sensational move for former striker Carlos Tevez.

With Marcus Rashford facing a lengthy spell out due to a double stress fracture in his back, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is looking for potential replacements.

Ashley Young reportedly stormed out of Manchester United training last week to secure a move to Inter Milan.

Manchester United captain Young, 34, is on his way to Inter after the two clubs agreed a £1.3m deal.

Young is out of contract at the end of the season and has been free to talk to foreign clubs this month.

Teams competing in the Champions League will have to play four extra matches from 2024 as European football chiefs close in on an agreement to revamp the tournament, according to The Times.

A new report claims that the European Clubs' Association (ECA) and senior figures at UEFA want to expand the competition, which could cause chaos for England's already-packed schedule.

Although it has not been confirmed how the four extra matchdays will be squeezed in, it is said that the group stage of the competition will either be changed or another one added before the knockout rounds begin.

The ECA had originally hoped to add 10 extra fixtures to the Champions League in order to increase games played between European football's biggest clubs.

But it is claimed that they are satisfied by the new proposal of four matches, even though it could cause a major problem for Premier League clubs.

The Times report that the Carabao Cup could become a competition exclusively for sides not competing in the top tier of European football as a result.

The controversial plan, which has been consistently opposed by the Premier League, would mean that the finalists of the competition play 17 matches rather 13.

However, the new format is likely to appeal to the likes of Liverpool, Manchester City and the rest of the 'Big Six' as more Champions League fixtures will lead to increased revenues.

The Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT) has announced that the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations will kick off on 9 January.
The tournament had been due to take place in June and July but Fecafoot say the change has been made due to the weather conditions in the country at that time of year.

Officials in Cameroon met with representatives from the Confederation of African Football (CAF), including president Ahmad, on Wednesday in Yaounde.

FECATFOOT posted online:

It (2021 Africa Cup of Nations) will be played in Cameroon from January 9 to February 6, 2021. Date changed for weather reasons at Cameroon's request.


The change also means that the tournament will not clash with the expanded Club World Cup being held in China in June 2021.

CAF explained that the change has been made at the request of Cameroon.

CAF's deputy general secretary Tony Baffoe read from a statement:

We have reviewed the period of the competition as requested by the Cameroonian party due to unfavourable climatic conditions during the period initially slated.

After listening to the various arguments and viewpoints, and in particular from the Cameroonian meteorological authorities, the coaches and players; the representatives of the Afcon organising committee, which received the mandate from CAF Executive Committee to take the decision, has granted this request.

Arsenal will be without Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for three games after their appeal against his ban for his red card tackle against Crystal Palace was unsuccessful.

The Gunners asked the FA to reconsider the punishment handed to their captain and star striker following his dismissal for a late foul on Palace midfielder Max Meyer.

Arsenal's 16-goal top scorer was initially shown a yellow card by referee Paul Tierney which was only upgraded to a red after VAR Craig Pawson spent considerable time reviewing slow-motion replays of the incident.

The Gunners, though, felt there could be enough mitigation for a three-game suspension to be deemed an excessive punishment.

It has been confirmed he will be suspended for three games so we are not going to have the player for the next three fixtures.

Africa's richest man, Aliko Dangote said he will plan to buy Arsenal in 2021 after the completion of multi-billion dollar projects.
The 62-year-old is the founder of the multinational conglomerate, Dangote Group which deals with products like cement, sugar, salt, flour and steel, among others.

Dangote is currently building what will be the largest single-train refinery in the world in Lekki, Lagos State - the Dangote refinery, with production scheduled to start later in the year.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insists Manchester United are still one of the world's top clubs capable of competing for the biggest players despite concerns over falling revenues.

Arsenal and Chelsea fans face a travel nightmare after their FA Cup fourth round ties later this month were moved for live television coverage.

The Gunners' visit to Bournemouth has been moved to 8pm on Monday February 27 for live broadcast on BT Sport 1.

And Chelsea's fourth round tie at Hull City has been moved, also for BT coverage, to 5.30pm on Saturday February 25.

Arsenal supporters who travel by train will struggle to make the final train back to London from Bournemouth, which departs at 22.12.

They may be able to make the shorter walk to Pokesdown station where the train calls at 22.16.

Those on the train may be advised to leave before the final whistle, however, and they won't arrive back at London Waterloo until 1.11am.

There are no direct trains back to London from Hull for Chelsea fans after the teatime kick-off on the Saturday night. The travel chaos there is caused by King's Cross station being closed for the weekend.

Derby fans could also have difficulties getting back home after their tie at Northampton was switched to the Friday night with an 8pm kick-off.

They would have to get a train at 22.20, only about 25 minutes after the final whistle, and change trains at Rugby and Tamworth to get back to Derby at 23.53.

Liverpool are set to be screened live on the BBC once again after the broadcaster selected their FA Cup fourth round trip to either Shrewsbury Town or Bristol City.

The match will be played at 5pm on Sunday January 26 and shown on BBC One.

Unai Emery reportedly stopped Arsenal from selling starlet Reiss Nelson and instead chose to get rid of Alex Iwobi last summer.

Nelson has made 13 appearances for the Gunners this season and he continues to flourish under new manager Mikel Arteta.

Iwobi joined Everton in a £35million deal on deadline day last August and that move came about after former Arsenal boss Emery wanted to keep hold of 20-year-old Nelson, according to The Athletic.

Crystal Palace were reportedly keen on acquiring the services of Nelson for £20m during the summer transfer window.

Nelson has featured in Arsenal's last five games and netted the winning goal in their FA Cup third-round victory over Leeds on Monday night.

The winger's other goal for the first team this season came in Arsenal's Carabao Cup 5-0 win over Nottingham Forest.

Liverpool's Sadio Mane has been named the Confederation of African Football's (CAF) Player of the Year.

The Senegal forward beat Liverpool team-mate and Egypt forward Mohamed Salah and Manchester City's Algerian winger Riyad Mahrez to the award.

Mane, 27, helped the Reds to the 2018-19 Champions League title, scoring 30 goals in all competitions last season.

He has scored 15 goals so far in 2019-20, with Liverpool 13 points clear at the top of the Premier League table.

Mane said:

I'm really happy and proud to win this. Football is my job, I love it..

I would like to thank my family, my national team, staff, the federation and Liverpool Football Club. It's a big day for me.

Mane collected his award at a ceremony in Hurghada, Egypt but neither Salah, who had won the award in both the past two years, nor Mahrez were present.

Mane has finished in the award's top three for the last three years, and has long targeted the prize in order to emulate the achievement of one of his heroes, former Liverpool striker El Hadji Diouf, who won it in 2002.

Chelsea have paid out more than £26million (N12billion) over the sacking of Antonio Conte .

The English Premier League club’s latest accounts show the Stamford Bridge outfit paid a total of £26.6million 9N12.7billion) in compensation to former manager Conte and his backroom staff and legal costs.

Conte was sacked by Chelsea in July 2018 after two years at the helm, and was later replaced by Maurizio Sarri.

Former Italy midfielder Conte steered Chelsea to the 2017 English Premier League title but was dismissed a year later with 12 months left on his contract as the Blues finished fifth and failed to qualify for the UEFA Champions League.

Conte also led Chelsea to victory in the 2018 FA Cup, with a 1-0 win over Manchester United in the final.

During Conte’s two-year spell at Stamford Bridge, the Blues purchased 13 players for a total of more than £351million (N166.9billion), including the Italian’s fifth most expensive Chelsea signing, N'Golo Kanté (fee of £32.2m/N15bn), who significantly improved his market value since then.

Guingamp have announced that 23-year-old striker Nathael Julan has died in a car crash following training on Friday.

The Ligue 2 side mourned the 'tragic day' as they shared the news on social media, leading to a number of tributes across French football.

Guingamp's statement read:

The club had the immense pain of learning this afternoon of the accidental death of their player Nathael Julan.

On this tragic day all the members of the club join together to send their condolences to Nathael's family.

Burnley have sent on-loan Danny Drinkwater back to Chelsea after a troubled spell with Sean Dyche's men.

Former English Premier League winner Drinkwater had hoped to get more minutes on the pitch after heading up to Turf Moor, but he has played just twice for the claret and blue and created headlines after being attacked on a night out in Manchester in September.

The 29-year-old linked up with Burnley in a loan deal in August, but he will return to Stamford Bridge when it expires on January 6.

Ahead of Burnley's FA Cup third-round tie with Peterborough on Saturday, Dyche confirmed that Drinkwater would be heading back to west London.

The midfielder joined Chelsea for a reported £35million (N17billion) in 2017 on a five-year deal, but his time with the Blues has been blighted by injuries, having made just 23 appearances across two seasons.

He played just once last season under Maurizio Sarri, and his loan up north did not prove to be a return to form for the England international.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer doesn't fear for his job at Manchester United even though the Premier League sacking season is in full swing.

Unai Emery, Mauricio Pochettino and Quique Sanchez Flores have all lost their jobs in recent weeks, and Solskjaer is coming under renewed pressure after winning four of 14 league games this season.

But the United boss insists he is not worried about his position as he prepares to face Tottenham at Old Trafford on Wednesday and Manchester City at the Etihad on Saturday.

Solskjaer said:

No it doesn't make me more concerned. I'm just focusing on my job and that's doing as well as I can, look forward to the next game and look at the long-term plan things with board.

It's that time of year. It's never nice to see your colleagues lose their job in a very short space of time.


Asked if he has felt the need to speak to United chief Ed Woodward, Solskjaer added:

We speak all the time so it's not like knee-jerk suddenly now we need to talk. We speak a few times every week so it's continually progressing.

The plans we've put in place, the rebuilding we know we started, we made some decisions that were necessary and now of course we're not happy where we are but will continue working.

Three days or four days aren't going to change a whole lot but these two games are great chances to improve things and continue in the vein against some of the better sides. We've had some good results against good teams and we've got a plan for Wednesday night.

We've had too many draws for my liking, defeats of course, but draws we should have turned into wins. Football is a results business.

We're not happy and know we can do better. We are working hard, the work is always geared on us improving but we're not getting all the results we've deserved.
