In sum, you are saying her reasoning and deductive conclusions are baseless and void from your standpoint?
And if it came from a newspaper article would be tenable?
Exactly what im saying.

blublahd:
You didnt quite grab my message, you claim nigerian culture inhibits its female, but my stance is women across the world at some point faced their own difficulty, its a phenomenon that cuts across all race. Lets not pitch nigeria stand now against a country that has surpassed such inhibition in its past history.
I got the message loud and clear - British culture was restrictive to women pre - equality era. Their culture was never based on an inherent belief (or an obvious one lets say) that women are incapable. Just a general belief that their roles should be confined. Nigerians believe in male superiority. That is a fckin hard battle to fight! Til today we haven't addressed it, issues as simple as bigamy or land use for widows remain unattended to. A woman who loses her husband loses everything, a woman with no education has nothing. Girls in the North are kidnapped for going to school. How do we even begin to compare their modern day experience to an age old oppression of women that has been tackled?

You were the one who made referrence to nail saloons as a place not to find intellectual female.

I always find myself agreeing with you. My first comment stated why I don't contribute and it's because of the uncivilized act of name calling and other forms of verbal bullying. And my last comment talked about the tradition in Nigerian homes. I left nigeria when I was a teenager so I can't speak of the situation right now but even here in the states, studies show that women have higher enrollment and graduation rate from college.

You're becoming my celebrity best friend in my head lol.

Just went through the articles you posted. Nice one, especially the one on banking, sales and investments. (Still need to digest its content though, especially on hedge funds).

Although they still don't prove anything about Nigerian women cos these were stats carried out on women with different backgrounds, race and ideologies.

Like I said in my initial post and like you rightly said in your comment, there are no stats to prove or ascertain these facts when it comes to Nigerian Men and Women.

Our arguments would only dwell on logical assertions and experiences. I made a point earlier on Page 2, there is a particular radio program on "The Woman" and yet when its time to make valid contributions, very few call in. Even when the OAP's categorically state that only female callers should call in.

You might raise the argument that they are busy doing something else, but yet it beats my imagination that when issues such as fashion, food and entertainment are discussed, our ladies easily pick interest.

Suffice it to say that its a "Nigerian tingy" for ladies not to be interested in intellectual issues?

More so being knowledgeable is being well informed and while a lotta ladies raise the argument that they are only knowledgeable in things that they pick interest in, furthermore proves Men right.

I for one would not say I am well grounded in every issue, as a matter of fact I am NOT. Yet I read about things I don't have a slightest interest in. Am not a literature person but a thread came up few months ago on Adichie and El Nathan and I took my time to go through it. I learnt a lot. smiley
I have listened to Nigerian callers on radio - they are never intelligent, especially on political sujects they spend their time praising the presenter and contribute little to nothing on the conversation. It's the same for callers into LBC radio - you draw a specific crowd, you get a specific response. Men are probably more likely to respond as they are more likely to repond here on NL because they are encouraged. They are placed higher in society and from birth they are told they are the superior gender.

One of my friends - very intelligent, her education is enviable (Imperial, Oxford) private colleges and secondary schools. She will decimate any maths test you give her. Ask her about Nigerian politics she will talk rubbish. Ask her about Gucci bags and its as if she has memorized the catalog. I agree there are certain industries that are tailored towards women - these industries specifically exploit the objectification women experience. This does not mean my friend isn't intelligent - it simply means she has different interests. Because I'm interested in politics doesn't mean I'm intelligent. Will you label our president, our incoming president or even many of Nigerias governors intelligent? How many of them can make intelligent statements?

And this is a problem, because some of these women might invent something or bring an invaluable contribution to science, engineering/technology. We are losing all these valuable contributions letting discouraging them from being part of politics or higher learning in general, especially if they do not have the money to study abroad or in more female friendly environments
God bless you! Somebody (maybe Bill Gates) made this statement about Saudi Arabia. When you don't exploit your talent you don't realize your potential!

If you see the number of nurses and doctors from Nigeria in the UK!

Those that live in the UK even know, it's only among the females that you will find a 40 year old Nigerian with 4 - 5 kids in university studying for her 2nd to 3rd degree!

These mamas we even mock in church many of them are masters holders, they outwork, out educate and out wit the men at every turn! However when it comes to studying them we will turn to the one whose husband is not around and decide she is therefore unsuccessful in life.

Our real problem is our perception, if we give these women ample opportunities we will be surprised! Just take a look at the elites!

It's called hasty generalization, a subgroup of faulty generalization. Nigeria has a population of 170 million and approximately 45% are women. Amongst the people she's met, she could come up with that conclusion. But I find that to be opposite in my society. I might be interpreting the poster the wrong way but my understanding was that she is trying to create a platform where people can talk about their different experiences to create a general awareness as to why women don't engage in specific discourse. For example, politics in nairaland, or even universally as we have few countries that' can boast of ever having a female president.
Please enlighten me, as I might have taken this to a different spectrum entirely
That may as well be true - if I was ignorant enough to use nairaland as a case study for Nigerian women I will likely assume the same.

I have already mentioned a few reasons why women will not engage in political debates here on NL (bullying) as well as why you are more likely to find them in Fashion, Family and Romance (cultures and traditions).

Theres another Nigerian forum I frequent (either Naijavillagesquare or lipstick alley) which are predominantly female and the posters will blow your mind. From my personal observations the Nigerian women i engage in comment sections of the guardian or the economist have been nothing short of amazing. This does not even include the Nigerians I went to university with or befriended in intra university social groups.

There are more Nigerian females than men (this is a fact) in most of my universities degree programms (this includes medicine, pharmacy and engineering) and theyre the highest black group in my unis alumnae. It's likely the OP hasn't gone out of her comfort zone to engage intelligent women or she simply isn't up to par to do so.

The fact we are still a mile away from having a female president speaks more of our political scene than it does the female populace, for one many doubt we will see an igbo president talkless of a female one. Equality in Nigeria isn't a measure of intelligence.

Male dominance in academics and business is a result of the oppression women experience til this day, I have said traditionally women are told to be submissive, once you have finished dumbing down the role of women in society we shoudn't be surprised they are unable to dominate worthier scenes. but if we take a sample of females and males and measure their outcomes you are 100% likely to find women are more intelligent as previous studies have taught us.

The posters assertions are a slap in the face of these facts and figures and a result of the male worshiping we find in Nigeria.

Queensmith you've gain a fan today. I think you've stated an intelligent opinion. But I will disagree with something. Even if the op came up with conclusion that might not be true, she did based on a specific observation. I'm all for following the scientific method. If I did the same for my society, i will come up with the opposite conclusion.
Her observation is flawed - she couldn't have made them in a classroom or from academic literature?

Look at it this way - if i attended an arsenal match at emirates or even the local sports bar what conclusion do you think i'm going to draw if I decided to embark on a political or even academic conversation?

Again, we know female attainment is down to a number of factors, it isn't as simple as 'i listened to a radio program and women are stewpid'.

Let me give you an example
I have made the same conclusions from typical Nigerians I met in the workplace, in fact I have vowed never to hire a specific Nigerian ethnic group because of my experience. Tell me is this fair to those individuals?

She stated her own opinion based on her own analyses and further raised a question for anyone's contrary opinion

Women all over the world had a hard time championing their course at respective times in their countries' history, lets not play victim.

Now this is an insult to women at large. Unfortunate circumstance doesnt make one bereft of intellectual capabilities.
Plus just because one goes fixing toes nails doesnt mean they cant discuss intellectual matters there.
Lastly she didnt say they are nowhere to be found, its a case of proportion to males.

The thread is insulting!

so now a gender can be proven to be inherently daft under certain analogies?
You have then defeated logic on emotional sentiments.
What you care about has no place in this debate.

On nairaland I expect words such as 'emotional' 'unstable' feminazi' to be thrown at me. Chest beating is a new one. and it's allowed.

She made no analysis - she has sat down and made silly conclusions to ignorant observations. Now if she had decided this after reading a newspaper article she will seem less of a joke.

What are you talking about? Women all over the world are benefiting from civilization Nigeria is yet to achieve? What are we expecting from the women that they haven't done? Please read my post above on Nigerias cultures and traditions. Your own people are exploding themselves in the name of religion and you are here applying a blanket rule to an oppressed gender.

I fix my toenails all the time - I don't use the chitchat from my local nail salon to assess if Chinese women are intelligent, neither do I listen to Capital Xtra and think women are dumber because Jenny Francis only talks about Kim Kardasian. That will just be stewpid of me.

Make your points without being rather insulting.

You can as well drop it and let us all learn from what you read. That's what this is all about. Plus quit the use of such language @emboldened. It would only lead to a total deviation from the subject matter.

The OP didn't make any argument and you haven't done so either. You have just as many others have, made a statement based on secular reasoning or rather your belief.

Going by your initial analogy about the OP not meeting classy ladies, I could say the same about you not meeting classy Men. (Would that make me right?)

Same thing I told a particular moniker. If I said Jollof rice is far the best food in the world from all the variety I have tasted, have I proven anything?

NO Facts, NO Point.

Chikena!!
again it is not an insult - it speaks for the surroundings of a Nigerian women who has failed to find intelligent Nigerian women. Very simple assertion. We are comparing encounters here unless you want to follow me around with a camera you will take my statements at face value.

Unfortunately, Nigerias male dominated academic institutions fail to produce us with reliable data, that can accurately substantiate the OPs claims. Maybe if there were more intelligent women eh *rolls eyes*

If we were speaking of the other parts of the world it's a proven fact women are more intelligent than men. This is from a series of studies conducted over decades.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/education/educationnews/9401241/IQ-tests-women-score-higher-than-men.html

and this is without factoring in controversial topics like erotic capital or sexual politics.

Now maybe when you start to hire women more in Nigeria. . . .

This is what I call diversion of the supposed question I asked you, your tete wouldn't have been necessitated if you are logical rather than emotional to the fact that your points are baseless and you're only coming up with a prejudice tirade- much to my chagrin.

There is no law that stated that female should be in recluse from intellectual stuffs regarding our daily lives, not even with the feminine high populations, we have myriad of un-intelligent girls that are birds of a plumage, and their only worries are fashion, gossips and celebrities; we both know I'm right so don't try to defend this point. So tell me how this is contributing to the development of our society?
Here we go - my response is emotional rather than logical again because i am a woman, and this will soon be suggested as an intelligent response!

I have had this conversation on this very forum too many times and I have no interest in continuing.

First of all its clear that you are looking at my view from the standpoint that I have already concluded that men are more intelligent and "knowledgeable" than women.
I never said I was of that opinion, I just asked a question.

You also got my other statement wrong. I didn't say men where making intelligent contributions in sections like politics and religion, I only said that from observation, I noticed that most ladies don't engage in intellectual discourse in those sections.
Without quoting you directly I am going along the statement you made that you hardly ever see women in intelligent discourse.

No doubt the politics section on nairaland will put women off - their attitude towards women is not one they even try to hide. I dare you to go to the politics section and ask 'why are there no women' and see the nonsense responses you will get by men with the brain capacity of goats. That men frequent the politics section doesn't mean they are intelligent. I wouldn't bother mounting my high horse here - i welcome you to go yourself and sensibly decide how many posts are indeed intelligent.

I will draw your attention to Obiagellis post on Buharis proposed welfare package, she was insulted by goats who didn't even try to suggest why the insults were warranted. Only a handful of individuals could accurately pin point the flaws and were graceful enough to make adjustments. These same goats wouldn't dare talk if the OP had been a man!

How many women want to face the boys club? Why should they? We are not trained or even encouraged from birth on how argue with men! We are even told to be submissive and some religions teach that a woman is half of a man. Please tell me in the face of these cultural and religious barriers how many women do you expect to flock out?

In the face of this, elitists remain unperturbed, again I draw your attention to the occupation of Nigerian women in the best institutions worldwide - you may never find them on Nairaland, they may not live in Nigeria but they do exist and if you look hard enough you will find them!

I use the term intelligent very carefully, and I can confidently say I have only ever met a handful of Nigerian men I will deem intelligent. Or will indeed sit down and listen to for more than 10 minutes, I am definitely not making observations from sports bars and football stadiums.

Ranging from music to sport, government, science and technology, invention, career seeking and every possible occupations that humans engage it, tell me the exact field dominated by the females?
Dominance is the very problem women are facing and is the reason for the OPs unreasonable suggestion.

Male domination in the roles you have mentioned are a direct impact of female oppression which modern times are only beginning to circumvent.

You cannot because men dominate Nigerias political scene assume women are not intelligent - the facts here are that women are not given the same opportunity and nothing to do with intelligence. An intelligent society (i.e those that are not dominated on a basis of Gender) has the ability to exploit potential regardless of gender.

This is no topic for ignorant nitwits making baseless assumptions from listening to Nigerian radio - this is a topic taken on by the best and brightest of social scientists and philosophers.
