An Ethiopian Airlines jet has crashed shortly after take-off from Addis Ababa, killing all on board, the airline says. It said 149 passengers and eight crew members were believed to be on flight ET302 from the Ethiopian capital to Nairobi in Kenya. The airline added that there were 33 different nationalities on board. The crash happened at 08.44 local time, six minutes after the months-old Boeing 737 Max-8 took off. It is not yet clear what caused the accident. An eyewitness at the scene told the BBC there was an intense fire as the aircraft hit the ground. "The blast and the fire were so strong that we couldn't get near it," he said. "Everything is burnt down. There are four helicopters at the scene now." First word of the crash came when Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed expressed his "deepest condolences" on Twitter. @PMEthiopia The Office of the PM, on behalf of the Government and people of Ethiopia, would like to express it’s deepest condolences to the families of those that have lost their loved ones on Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737 on regular scheduled flight to Nairobi, Kenya this morning. — Office of the Prime Minister - Ethiopia (@PMEthiopia) March 10, 2019 In an earlier statement, the airline said that search and rescue operations were under way near the crash site around the town of Bishoftu, which is 60km (37 miles) south-east of the capital. "Ethiopian Airlines staff will be sent to the accident scene and will do everything possible to assist the emergency services," the statement added. Boeing, the company that built the aeroplane, said in a tweet that it was "closely monitoring the situation". Its 737 Max-8 aircraft is relatively new to the skies, having been launched in 2016. It was added to the Ethiopian Airlines fleet in July last year. Another plane of the same model was involved in a crash five months ago, when a Lion Air flight crashed into the sea near Indonesia with nearly 190 people on board. what do we know about the airline's safety record? Ethiopian Airlines flies to many destinations in Africa, making it a popular carrier in a continent where many airlines fly only from their home country to destinations outside Africa. It has a good reputation for safety, although in 2010 one of the company's aeroplanes crashed in the Mediterranean Sea shortly after leaving Beirut. The incident killed 90 people on board. The airline's highest fatalities prior to this came in a November 1996 crash during a hijacking on a flight from Addis Ababa to Nairobi. One of the aeroplane's engines stopped when the fuel ran out and although pilots attempted an emergency water landing, they hit a coral reef in the Indian Ocean and 123 of the 175 people on board were killed. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-47513508 |

London (CNN) — Up to 3,000 foreign doctors in the UK are having their backgrounds checked after it emerged that a fake psychiatrist with no qualifications was allowed to practice for over 22 years. Zholia Alemi was jailed for fraud in October after she changed an elderly client's will to make herself a beneficiary. Following that, it was discovered that when she first registered in Britain in 1995 Alemi had conned medical bodies into believing she had a qualification from the University of Auckland in New Zealand. The General Medical Council (GMC) has now launched an investigation into thousands of UK-based doctors who registered for UK licenses in the same way as Alemi, Britain's Press Association (PA) reported. The body, which determines whether doctors are qualified to practice in the UK, admitted its checks were "inadequate" in the 1990s and apologized "for any risk arising to patients as a result." "Patients deserve good care from appropriately qualified professionals and place a great deal of trust in doctors. To exploit that trust and the respected name of the profession is abhorrent," the GMC's chief executive, Charlie Massey, said in a statement. "Our processes are far stronger now, with rigorous testing in place to ensure those joining the register are fit to work in the UK," he added. In 1995, Alemi took advantage of a section of the Medical Act, subsequently removed in 2003, that allowed medical graduates from some Commonwealth countries to skip exams and rigorous document checks. Alemi's decades of deception were uncovered after an investigation by UK regional newspaper the News and Star, following her initial sentencing for fraud and theft in October. Employed as a consultant psychiatrist in Cumbria, north-west England, Alemi had avoided scrutiny until being investigated by authorities for taking advantage of an elderly patient, altering her will without her approval to make herself a major beneficiary. She was also found to have stolen a number of the woman's watches and was sentenced to five years in prison. Alemi was known to the elderly patient as Julia, according to Cumbria Police, who quoted the victim saying: "Julia has drafted a will. Julia has put herself down for everything as I did not tell her I had a family ... but I don't want her having it all." A spokeswoman for the Department of Health and Social Care said in a statement: "As the organization responsible for regulating doctors, we expect the GMC to investigate how this criminal was able to register as a doctor and put measures in place to make sure it can't happen again." https://edition-m.cnn.com/2018/11/19/health/fake-psychiatrist-investigation-scli-gbr-intl/index.html

It has been half a century since the dawn of colour television, but more than 7,000 people across the UK are still watching in black and white, according to TV Licensing. Despite an increase in the use of smart televisions, as well as tablets and smartphones to access TV content, some 7,161 UK households are spurning modern technology and have not switched over to colour transmissions. TV Licensing spokesman Jason Hill said: "Over half of the UK's TVs now connect to the internet so it's interesting that more than 7,000 households still choose to watch their favourite shows on a black and white telly." He also warned that licences are needed for all TVs, and also to download BBC programmes on any computer, tablet or phone. Last month, TV Licencing said more than 26,000 people between the ages of 18 and 25 had been caught watching live TV or BBC iPlayer without a licence in the past year. Regular colour broadcasts began with the Wimbledon tennis tournament on BBC2 in July 1967, and the number of black and white licences issued each year has been in steady decline since. In 2000, there were 212,000 black and white TV licences issued but by 2003 that number had more than halved to 93,000. The number had dipped below 10,000 by 2015. Now, London has the largest number of black and white sets at 1,768, followed by the West Midlands with 431 and Greater Manchester with 390. Television and radio technology historian Jeffrey Borinsky said: "There are hundreds of collectors like myself who have many black and white TVs. "Who wants all this new-fangled 4K Ultra HD, satellite dishes or a screen that's bigger than your room when you can have glorious black and white TV? "Thirty years ago, you could still buy black and white TVs, mainly small portables, for as little as £50 and it's interesting to know that some of people still have them." https://news.sky.com/story/more-than-7000-still-watching-black-and-white-tv-across-uk-11547963?dcmp=snt-sf-twitter&fbclid=IwAR1jmJq6vTjzK2xM-TL_n3wlccvNPy0ZiHKLIHrvTcEuuNJGl4UQsIMjQ1Y

On Tuesday, former nurse Niels Hoegel admitted to killing 100 patients in his care, on the first day of his trial in the biggest serial killing case in Germany’s post-war history. 41-year old Hoegel has already spent nearly a decade in prison on a life term for other patient deaths, and is accused of intentionally administering medical overdoses to victims so he could bring them back to life at the last moment. As the proceedings opened in the northern city of Oldenburg, presiding judge Sebastian Buehrmann asked whether the charges against him were accurate. Hoegel replied quietly “yes. What I have admitted took place,” he told the courtroom crowded with dozens of grieving relatives. Buehrmann said the main aim of the trial was to establish the full scope of the murder spree that was allowed to go unchecked for years at two German hospitals. “It is like a house with dark rooms we want to bring light into the darkness,” he said. After a minute of silence in the courtroom for the victims, Hoegel listened impassively, his head lowered, as public prosecutor Daniela Schiereck-Bohlmann read out the name of each dead patient and the charges against the defendant. Prosecutors say at least 36 patients were killed at a hospital in Oldenburg where he worked, and about 64 more at a clinic in nearby Delmenhorst, between 2000 and 2005. More than 130 bodies of patients who died on Hoegel’s watch have been exhumed, in a case investigators have called “unprecedented in Germany to our knowledge”. One of the more than 100 co-plaintiffs in the trial, Christian Marbach, said it was a scandal that Hoegel had been allowed to kill with impunity for such an extended period of time without hospital authorities or law enforcement intervening. Investigators say the final toll could top 200 but fear they might never know for sure because the bodies of many possible victims were cremated. Hoegel appears to have followed a similar procedure each time, first injecting a medication that triggered cardiac arrest, followed by an often futile attempt at resuscitation. Prosecutors say he was motivated by vanity, to show off his skills at saving human lives, and by simple “boredom”. https://wakanda.ng/41-year-old-german-nurse-niels-hoegel-admits-killing-100-patients-period-5-years/

The UN is investigating the alleged embezzlement of up to €5 billion that disappeared from accounts owned by Muammar Gaddafi, the former Libyan leader, according to Belgian MP Georges Gilkinet. “UN documents confirm that Belgium failed to comply with a UN resolution on freezing Libyan assets,” he told the Belgian news network RTBF. He said that so far, he had received fragmented information from Belgian authorities and that is vital “to clarify the situation, which may lead to a big scandal, because hundreds of millions of euros were sent to unknown individuals in Libya who were not known.” RTBF also cited an anonymous source claiming that since 2013 the missing assets from the accounts have allegedly been used to “finance a civil war which led to a major migration crisis.” In Belgium, the probe which is headed by investigator Michel Claise comes amid reports that a portion of Gaddafi’s assets could be sent to the Libyan Investment Authority, a sovereign fund. Furthermore, a special UN report also suggested that the money was received by the Libyan Investment Authority. As reported by Sputnik, its complex structure makes it almost impossible to find out what these funds were allocated for. “The sum could have been sent to armed groups in Libya, something that further destabilized the region,” according to the report. This comes after in March 2018, local media reported that around €10 billion of Libyan government funds, which were frozen as part of the sanctions against Gaddafi’s inner circle had vanished from a Belgian bank between 2013 and 2017. Back in November 2013, four Euroclear Bank accounts belonging to the Libyan Investment Authority (LIA) and its subsidiary Libyan Foreign Investment Company (LFICO) in Bahrain and Luxembourg, contained some €16.1bn in frozen assets. However, when authorities tried to seize the funds in 2017, it turned out there was only just over €5bn left in those accounts, an investigation by Le Vif weekly revealed. “There remains a little less than 5 billion euros on the four accounts opened at Euroclear Bank SA,” Denis Goeman, a spokesman from Brussels’ prosecutor’s office told the Belgian publication. Michel Claise was initially the first to discovery that the funds were missing. He was in charge of the probe into alleged money laundering by Gaddafi’s inner circle, requested the seizure of the frozen Libyan funds. After the death of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, the UN ruled that his assets should be frozen in four Belgian banks. However, it turned out later that interests and dividends from these assets have never been blocked. Belgium’s finance ministry insisted that the interest payments were legal, Le Vif’s investigation in March is certain that authorities must answer several crucial questions, the biggest one being: Where did the €10 billion vanish to? The probe by the UN and Michel Claise into the suspected illegal disbursement of interests and dividends on frozen accounts comes after months of denial from Foreign Minister Didier Reynders and silence from the rest of the cabinet. There has been little progress since the discovery of the initial missing €10 billion. https://wakanda.ng/e5-billion-vanishes-frozen-gaddafi-accounts-belgium-e10-billion-initially-went-missing/

Paul Allen, who co-founded Microsoft, has died aged 65 from complications of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. He had revealed the disease's return only two weeks ago, after previously being treated for it in 2009. He had said he and his doctors were "optimistic" about treatment. His Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates said: "I am heartbroken by the passing of one of my oldest and dearest friends... Personal computing would not have existed without him." In a statement confirming his death on Monday afternoon, his sister Jody described the businessman as a "remarkable individual on every level". "Paul's family and friends were blessed to experience his wit, warmth, his generosity and deep concern. For all the demands on his schedule, there was always time for family and friends," the statement said. "At this time of loss and grief for us - and so many others - we are profoundly grateful for the care and concern he demonstrated every day." The businessman made his fortune alongside school friend Bill Gates, after they co-founded technology giant Microsoft in 1975. "From our early days together at Lakeside School, through our partnership in the creation of Microsoft, to some of our joint philanthropic projects over the years, Paul was a true partner and dear friend," said Mr Gates. "He deserved much more time, but his contributions to the world of technology and philanthropy will live on for generations to come. I will miss him tremendously." He left the company in the 1983 following his first diagnosis of the blood cancer Hodgkin's disease, but recovered to become a successful venture capitalist with his media and communications investment firm, Vulcan that he set up in 1986. Analysis Dave Lee, BBC North America technology reporter, San Francisco I've spent Monday at the 25th anniversary of technology magazine Wired, an event celebrating the history of not just the magazine, but technology itself. Paul Allen, who will be deeply missed by those here, was one of the industry's giants. His name would have been on Wired's pages many, many times. Mr Allen had beaten cancer before, and he had appeared confident that he could beat it again. Those close to him said he was active, on emails at least, until the very end - offering advice, strategy and insight to the many, many people who looked to him for support. Mr Allen didn't always have a great relationship with his co-founder, Bill Gates. The pair had a well-publicised row over stock ownership. But they shared an awful lot in common, first as children learning programming, and then as adults donating billions to philanthropic efforts. Mr Allen's investment firm confirmed news of his death on Monday evening. "Millions of people were touched by his generosity, his persistence in pursuit of a better world, and his drive to accomplish as much as he could with the time and resources at his disposal," Vulcan CEO Bill Hilf said in a statement. He is estimated to have donated more than $2bn to philanthropy throughout his life including science, education and wildlife conservation causes, the Associated Press report. He was also an avid sports fan, owning both the Portland Trail Blazers basketball team and Seattle Seahawks NFL team, who won the US Superbowl in 2013. In 2010 he pledged to give the majority of his fortune to charitable causes after his death. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-45871379 https://m.dw.com/en/microsoft-co-founder-paul-allen-dies-at-65/a-45901576

An Indian bus driver has been suspended - for letting a monkey "drive" his bus. This is despite not one of the 30-or-so passengers on board the vehicle in southern Karnataka state complaining about their furry chauffeur. However, when a video of the relaxed - and apparently competent - langur monkey taking the wheel went viral, the human driver's employers took action. The safety of passengers cannot be put at risk by "allowing a monkey on the steering" wheel, a spokesman said. Somewhat unsurprisingly, this has not been an entirely popular decision with internet users delighted by the short clip. "So sweet. Why suspend. He should have been warned not to repeat this," Parag Heda tweeted. The incident took place on Monday, according to the government's road transport corporation - which only learned of the unusual driver's actions after the video went viral. According to witnesses, the monkey boarded the vehicle with another passenger but refused to sit anywhere but up front as the bus travelled around Davanagere. The driver, named as M Prakash, seemed to be unconcerned by this turn of events, allowing his new friend to sit on the steering wheel as they continued their journey. In fairness to Mr Prakash, he does appear to have one hand on the wheel at all times. And in fairness to the monkey, he does seem to be paying attention to the road ahead - although whether he had mastered the mirrors is unclear. According to reports, the monkey eventually reached his destination and left the driver to carry on with his day. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-45772168 Video : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U_wl3TJSz0w |

Der Spiegel claim the lawyer's case is based on a document containing Ronaldo's account of what happened on 12th June 2009. In it, the 33-year old is quoted as saying "she said 'no' and 'stop' several times." Mayorga has now spoken publicly for the first time about her encounter with the Juventus forward, who was under contract at Real Madrid when the incident is supposed to have taken place, claiming to have been raped anally after spending an evening partying with Ronaldo while he was on holiday with his cousin and brother-in-law in Las Vegas. Mayorga also described events following the incident, describing how Ronaldo fell to his knees and told her he was "99 per cent" a "good guy" let down by the "one per cent". One of the most high-profile sports stars on the planet, the news is likely to achieve global media attention, with Ronaldo and his legal team yet to repsond publicly to the accusations. https://m.dw.com/en/cristiano-ronaldo-accused-of-raping-american-woman-in-2009/a-45679042 https://www.besoccer.com/new/cristiano-ronaldo-accused-of-rape-510688 https://www.rt.com/sport/439867-ronaldo-rape-accusations-us-woman/
