Food › Coca-cola Plans To Launch Its First Alcoholic Drink by Quelme(op): 6:22pm On Mar 07, 2018
Coca-Cola is planning to produce an alcoholic drink for the first time in the company's 125-year history - with an alcopop-style product in Japan.

It is keen to cash in on the country's growing taste for Chu-Hi - canned sparkling flavoured drinks given a kick with a local spirit called shochu.

The product is typically between 3% and 8% alcohol by volume.
A senior Coke executive in Japan said the move was a "modest experiment for a specific slice of our market".

"We haven't experimented in the low alcohol category before, but it's an example of how we continue to explore opportunities outside our core areas," said Jorge Garduno, Coca-Cola's Japan president.
It was unlikely the drink would be sold outside of Japan, he suggested.

Chu-Hi - an abbreviation for shochu highball - has been marketed as an alternative to beer, proving especially popular with female drinkers.

Japan's big drinks firms including Kirin, Suntory and Asahi all have varieties of the drink, and continue to experiment with flavours.

The most popular flavours are strong citrus ones such as grapefruit or lemon, but the drink can also be made with other fruit flavours like grape, apple and peach.

'Premium segments'

As younger consumers become more health conscious, Coca-Cola has been diversifying from fizzy drinks, including buying water and tea brands.

But last November, Wells Fargo analyst Bonnie Herzog speculated that Coca-Cola might move into alcohol, as it looked to "premium segments such as adult craft beverages".

The phrase alcopop typically refers to sweet but alcoholic drinks, and in 1990s UK brands such as Hooch, Reef, Smirnoff Ice and Bacardi Breezer became hugely popular.

But they were controversial, raising concerns that they encouraged young people to drink alcohol in large quantities because they were so easy to consume.

Sports › Arsenal Signs Crypto-currency Deal by Quelme(op): 7:45pm On Jan 24, 2018
Arsenal has become the first major football club to sign a deal to promote a crypto-currency.

The club has reached an agreement with the gaming company CashBet, which is planning to launch its own currency CashBet Coin.

It will see CashBet Coin advertised at Arsenal's Premier League home games.
But one crypto-currency expert has questioned whether the club is wise to promote what can be a very risky investment.

CashBet is a Californian online gaming business formed in 2012, which is now launching an Initial Coin Offering (ICO). It aims to raise $40m by getting investors to buy CashBet Coins which can then be used to bet on its various online games.

Arsenal's chief commercial officer Vinai Venkatesham said: "We are looking forward to working with CashBet Coin as they launch their new crypto-currency."
I've asked Arsenal whether it was wise to endorse a highly volatile business and whether it was encouraging fans to bet with CashBet Coins.

A spokesman said the club was too busy preparing for its Carabao Cup clash with Chelsea to comment today.

'High risk'

ICOs have become an extremely popular way for businesses to raise money following the surge in value of Bitcoin, the original crypto-currency.

But they are unregulated and investors who buy the coins have no stake in the business and receive no dividends. They hope to profit from the rising value of the crypto-currency.

The Financial Conduct Authority has warned that ICOs are "high-risk, speculative investments".

David Gerard, whose book "Attack of the 50 Foot Blockchain" warns about the risks of investing in crypto-currencies, says Arsenal fans who might be encouraged to see CashBet Coins as a new way of betting need to be cautious.

"Crypto-currencies are less regulated than regular betting shops and it's a lot harder to get actual pounds back out again," Mr Gerard said.

While CashBet says it is regulated by the UK Gambling Commission and the Alderney Gambling Control Commission, a spokesman admitted that did not apply to its new crypto-currency venture.

He said that punters who bet with CashBet's currency would eventually be able to convert their winnings into cash on third party exchanges.

Sports › Winter Olympics 2018: Nigeria To Make History In Pyeongchang by Quelme(op): 8:05am On Jan 16, 2018
Nigeria's women's bobsleigh team will make history in Pyeongchang as the first African sled to compete at the Winter Olympics.

Seun Adigun, Ngozi Onwumere, and Akuoma Omeoga hit the qualifying standard in November but needed to maintain their world ranking until 14 January.

Nigeria will be represented for the first time at the Winter Olympics.
Simidele Adeagbo will also fly the West African nation's flag in the women's skeleton.

All three bobsledders were once track and field athletes before switching to winter sports, with Adigun competing in the 100m hurdles at the London 2012 Olympics.

Adigun will pilot the Nigerian sled in South Korea with either Onwumere or Omeoga to be selected as brakewoman.

I ain't disputing the duration of the course over there in the UK...... But here in 9ja it is a very lucrative profession....... And it is a 5 years course, then a year INTERNSHIP PROGRAMME (you get paid, CONHESS 8 step 2) and 1 year NYSC....... Making it 7 years altogether........

The Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences offers a five-year professional B.MLS degree programme in Medical Laboratory Science. Courses in Medical Laboratory Science are taught under five disciplines: Clinical Chemistry, Haematology, Medical Microbiology, Histopathology and Immunology including Instrumentation and Pharmacology. In the first four years the student attains over-all competence in all these disciplines. The final year is reserved for undergraduate specialization in any TWO of these Medical Laboratory subjects one as a Major, and the other as a Minor area of specialization. The courses are designed to highlight to the student the central role laboratory investigation of components of biological fluids, blood, urine, cerebro-spinal fluid, secretions, excretions, tissues or organs play in the diagnosis, management and prognosis of disease states. The student also at the end of the course acquires the expertise to fabricate new equipment or repair or modify existing ones, and refine old techniques or introduce new diagnostic procedres.

Job Opportunities

On the successful completion of the five-year degree programme, students obtain registration with the Institute of Medical Laboratory Sciences and Technology of Nigeria after the completion of a one-year internship in a recognized and accredited hospital. This registration enables them to take up careers in Medical Laboratory Sciences as Medical Laboratory Scientists, in teaching and specialist hospitals, government hospitals, primary health care centres, research centres, private to health centres, private establishments and quality control units of industries. The graduates have job opportunities as research scientists, teachers in institutions of higher learning or they can become employers of labour, by establishing their own diagnostic/research laboratories or instrument maintenance/ fabrication centres. It is part of their professional ethos to ensure quality and uphold accountability in practice.

Politics › When Sports Stars Make A Run At Politics by Quelme(op): 11:11pm On Dec 28, 2017
One of Africa's all-time greatest footballers is set to clinch a new title - president of the west African nation of Liberia, his native country.

George Weah rose from humble beginnings in a slum to play for some of Europe's best teams, garnering an array of footballing accolades along the way.

He then turned his sights on politics and, after a number of failed attempts, won elected office as senator in 2014. He is now gearing up to take over the top job .

Profile: Who is George Weah?

Not many former sports stars have made it as far as Mr Weah, but it's not uncommon to see them joining the political fray - often assisted by an established public presence and, perhaps, by the ambition and drive that helped them succeed in the sporting arena.

Here is a handful of examples from around the world.

One of the first to spring to mind may be
Imran Khan, who enjoyed an illustrious career playing for Pakistan's national cricket team between 1976 and 1992, and leading it to its only World Cup victory in 1992.

He then took to philanthropy and politics, launching his own political party in 1996. He first won a seat in the National Assembly in 2002 and his party was established as a serious political force in 2013 elections.

Wrestling In A New Ring

Among the best-known examples in the US is Jesse "The Body" Ventura, a Navy Seal and Vietnam veteran who shot to fame as a wrestler and commentator in the 1970s and 1980s.

He went on to become a city mayor in Minnesota before creating a political shockwave in 1998 when he unexpectedly defeated both Republican and Democratic candidates to become state governor.

Arnold Schwarzenegger experienced his first success as a bodybuilder in his native Austria, before he moved into roles in action films. He won Mr Universe at 20 and went on to win the Mr Olympia title seven times, and remains the best-known name in the industry. He served as Californian governor from 2003 to 2011.

In American football, Jack Kemp was a 1960s star quarterback who went on to serve in Congress for 18 years as a Republican and became a conservative hero to the Reagan wing of the party.

He made unsuccessful attempts to run for both the presidency and vice-presidency but did serve as housing secretary in the cabinet of George Bush Senior.

On the Democrats' side, the best-known example may be Bill Bradley , star basketball player with the New York Knicks who went on to become senator for New Jersey for 18 years.

Off The Ball In Brazil

Politicians have also emerged from Brazilian football.

Romário was Fifa's World Player of the Year in 1994 but also earned an image as a bad boy. His reinvention as a politician came with the birth of his sixth child, who had Down's Syndrome - first as a disability campaigner, then as elected congressman.

He Remains In Office Today .

Sócrates played football for Brazilian clubs and its national side for more than a decade from 1974, earning 60 caps for Brazil and captaining the much-admired (though ultimately losing) national squad for the 1982 Fifa World Cup.

Unusually for a footballer, he also earned a degree in medicine and was known for his outspoken political views and intellectualism, earning him the sobriquet Doctor Sócrates.

Sócrates did not seek elected office but his influence extended far beyond the football pitch when he co-founded the Corinthians Democracy movement in opposition to the military government and publicly demanded direct presidential elections.

Athletes Switching Tracks

Athletes are fairly well-represented in politics, including some of the few women to have made the switch.

In the UK, Sebastian (now Lord) Coe went from leading track-and-field athlete to Conservative politician and life peer in the House of Lords, while former Liberal Democrat leader Menzies Campbell was once known as "the fastest white man on the planet" and held the British 100m record.

Tanni Grey-Thompson won 16 medals as a Paralympian and her activism within sport also saw her appointed a life peer in 2010.

Mexican Ana Gabriela Guevara is a 400m runner-turned-senator, while Kenyan long-distance runner Wesley Korir - winner of the 2012 Boston Marathon - is now a member of parliament.

Boxing Clever

Boxing has also packed a punch in the world of politics.

In the Philippines, legendary fighter
Manny Pacquiao first won election to congress in 2010 and is a senator today, while in Ukraine three-time world heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko is mayor of Kiev.

Crime › Pastor Feeds Congregation Rat Poison. Guess What Happened! by Quelme(op): 11:57am On Dec 26, 2017
According to Popular UK Website Unilad, A priest tried to prove his congregation were ‘immortal’ by feeding them rat poison and – as you can imagine – it went as badly as you’d expect.

Priest Light Monyeki from Soshanguve, South Africa, took it upon himself to prove his followers were both ‘superhuman’ and ‘immortal’, with a seriously dangerous stunt.
The priest declared to his congregation they should not fear death, as they will not die, before proceeding to pour bottles of water contaminated with rat poison into their mouths. Unfortunately for them they were more than happy to oblige.

He said:

We do not need to proclaim faith because we are believers. Death has no power over us.

Horrifyingly, many of his followers ran forward to take a fatal swig of the lethal stuff in a desperate bid to get closer to God.

The priest first drank the poison fluid before pouring it down the throats of his loyal congregation.

Predictably, members of his church started to complain of stomach pains and by the evening, five of them had died.

A further 13 were taken to hospital for the ingestion of the lethal drink, but despite all of this Monyeki allegedly denied responsibility.

Instead he declared:

Too much of any good thing could be bad.

Surely he’s not referring to his poison drink as a ‘good thing,’. There’s a line when it comes to dark humour.

The incident sparked a police investigation, but no arrests were made.

It’s infuriating to think this priest ever thought for a second this was a good idea and it highlights a gross abuse of power.

Live Strong writes on the effect rodenticides have on humans:

Various rat poisons used to control rodents have potent effects on people if ingested. Many rat poisons contain anticoagulants, which are medications that interfere with blood clotting.

As rats have become resistant to poisons, new superwarfarins that are more toxic to both rats and people have been marketed.
Several other rat poisons are used by government agencies or trained personnel only. The University of Florida reports that in the US in 1996, more than 13,000 people ingested rat poison – 96 percent unintentionally. Full effects of taking rat poison may not occur for up to two weeks after ingestion.

RIP to all the lives so recklessly taken.

Business › Oil Companies Shell And Eni To Stand Trial In Italy Over Nigeria Bribes by Quelme(op): 9:56am On Dec 21, 2017
The two oil giants and key directors are to stand trial in what may be one of the biggest corruption cases in history. It relates to bribes paid in Nigeria for the purchase of an offshore oil block.

A judge in Milan has ordered Eni, Shell and current and former Eni directors to stand trial on
accusations of corruption in the 2011 purchase of the OPL245 oil block in Nigeria estimated to hold 9 billion barrels of crude.
The CEO of Italian energy concern Eni since 2014 Claudio Descalzi, and his predecessor Paolo Scaroni are among 11 individuals indicted over the alleged bribes paid to secure the oil license for $1.3 billion (€1.09 billion).

The Italian company denied wrongdoing: "Eni's Board of Directors has reaffirmed its confidence that the company was not involved in alleged corrupt activities in relation to the transaction," according to a statement issued by the company on Wednesday.

In the trial scheduled to start next March, prosecutors allege the two companies paid $1.1 billion into a Nigerian government account and the money was then distributed as payoffs. Just $210 million from the deal is believed to have reached the Nigerian government.

Biggest case ever?

While corruption in Nigeria and around energy producers has been revealed in the past, a trial centered on the current CEO of a major oil company is almost unprecedented.
Shell said in a statement that it was "disappointed" by the judge's decision and that it would be found there was no case against Shell.

Eni and Shell are also facing criminal charges in Nigeria where former president Goodluck Jonathan and his oil minister allegedly took bribes. In Europe, Dutch investigators visited Shell's offices in 2016 as part of their inquiry into the case.

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari said "mind-boggling" sums have been stolen from state funds.

Also known as the “Norwegian spiral anomaly of 2009,” the spiral light appeared on December 9, 2009, visible across three northern counties which compose all of Northern Norway and two counties in the south. According to witnesses, it looked like a blue light coming from behind a mountain that stopped in mid-air and started spiraling outwards. Some of the speculations about the lights are that it could be a fireball meteor or a rare variant of Northern Lights that have never seen before.

UFO enthusiasts speculated that it could be something to do with extraterrestrial intelligence, a wormhole opening, or something to do with the experiments at the Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland. The next day, the Russian Ministry of Defense suggested an explanation that it could be one of their missile tests gone wrong, adding that, “At least this failed test made some nice fireworks for the Norwegians.”

The photograph, considered authentic, was taken in 1941 at the re-opening of the South Fork Bridge in Gold Bridge, British Columbia. The man in the photo is seen wearing sunglasses and a printed T-shirt. He stands apart from all the other people around him who are wearing formal clothes common during that period. It is debated whether the photograph genuinely shows a time traveler, is a photomanipulation, or just mistakenly seen to be anachronistic. It is suggested that he may not be wearing modern clothes but just dressed unusually in garb that was available during that time. The style of sunglasses he was wearing first appeared in the 1920s, and the T-shirt could be a sweater with a sewn-on emblem of the Montreal Maroons, an ice hockey team of that time.

On January 14, 1949, a suitcase with no label, clothes, along with other belongings were found at the Adelaide Railway Station. The autopsy revealed the deceased had suffered a severe lack of blood flow to his brain, kidneys, and liver, and had been hemorrhaging in his stomach and kidneys. Though it is believed he died of poison, tests did not reveal any foreign substances in the body. As the Cold War had recently started increasing international tensions, the man’s mysterious death, the involvement of secret code, and the inability to identify him sparked intense speculation.

On December 1, 1984, the police were informed at 6:30 a.m. about a dead body across from the Crippled Children’s Home on Somerton beach, Glenelg, Australia. A scrap of paper was found in the deceased’s fob pocket, and the police enlisted the help of public library officials who translated the words “Tamam Shud” to mean “ended” or “finished” and taken from Omar Khayyam’s book Rubaiyat . With the public’s help, the police were able to find the book to which the scrap of paper belonged. The book contained a telephone number and indentations of writings that resembled encrypted text.

The attack took place over Los Angeles, California less than three months after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and one day after the bombardment of Ellwood. On the night of 24-25 February, air raid sirens were sounded, a total blackout was ordered, and thousands of air raid wardens were summoned to their positions. The firing started at 3:16 a.m. The 37th Coast Artillery Brigade began firing .50-caliber machine guns, 12 eight-pound anti-aircraft batteries, 1,400 shells in total, into the air at a reported aircraft. The firing continued until 4:14 a.m., and the “all clear” was sounded at 7:21 a.m. The firing damaged several buildings and vehicles, three civilians in car accidents because of the chaos, and two died of heart attacks caused by stress. After the war ended, the Japanese declared that they had not flown any airplanes over Los Angeles. In 1983, the US Office of Air Force attributed the entire episode to “war nerves.”

The photograph was first published by Sir Victor Goddard, a retired RAF (Royal Air Force) officer and taken at Cranwell at the time of armistice after the First World War. It shows the members of Goddard’s squadron who served in WWI at the HMS Daedalus training facility, now known as the Royal Navy and Air Service (RNAS) Lee-on-Solent. Freddy Jackson was an air mechanic who was accidentally killed by an airplane propeller two days before the photo. His funeral was conducted on the very day the photograph was taken.
